The first part of Hilbert's sixteenth problem deals with the classification of the isotopy types realizable by real plane algebraic curves of given degree $m$. For $m \geq 8$, one restricts the study to the case of the $M$-curves. For $m=9$, the classification is still wide open. We say that an $M$-curve of degree 9 has a deep nest if it has a nest of depth 3. In the present paper, we prohibit 10 isotopy types with deep nests and no outer ovals.

Nonsingular plane curves over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of degree $q+2$ passing through all the $\mathbb{F}_q$-points of the plane admita representation by $3\times 3$ matrices over $\mathbb{F}_q$. We classify their degenerations by means of the matrix representation, and also discuss the similar problem for the affine-plane filling curves of degree $q+1$.
Genus two curves covering elliptic curves have been the object of study of many articles. For a fixed degree $n$ the subloci of the moduli space $\mathcal M_2$ of curves having a degree $n$ elliptic subcover has been computed for $n=3, 5$ and discussed in detail for $n$ odd; see \cite{Sh1, SV2, Fr, FK}. When the degree of the cover is even the case in general has been treated in \cite{PRS}. In this paper we compute the sublocus of $\mathcal M_2$ of curves having a degree 4 elliptic subcover.
In this paper we study degree three curves in $C^{(2)}$ with positive self-intersection defined by the action of a spherical triangular group in an auxiliary curve.
We characterize plane rational curves of degree four with two or more inner Galois points. A computer verifies the existence of plane rational curves of degree four with three inner Galois points. This would be the first example of a curve with exactly three them. Our result implies that Miura's bound is sharp for rational curves.
We study rational curves on general Fano hypersurfaces in projective space, mostly by degenerating the hypersurface along with its ambient projective space to reducible varieties. We prove results on existence of low-degree rational curves with balanced normal bundle, and reprove some results on irreducibility of spaces of rational curves of low degree.
This is a continuation of "Rational curves on hypersurfaces of low degree", math.AG/0203088. We prove that if d^2+d+1 < n and d > 2, then for a general hypersurface X_d in P^n of degree d, for each degree e the space of rational curves of degree e on X is itself a rationally connected variety.
The classification of maximal plane curves of degree $3$ over $\mathbb{F}_4$ will be given, which complements Hirschfeld-Storme-Thas-Voloch's theorem on a characterization of Hermitian curves in $\mathbb{P}^2$. This complementary part should be understood as the classification of Sziklai's example of maximal plane curves of degree $q-1$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Although two maximal plane curves of degree $3$ over $\mathbb{F}_4$ up to projective equivalence over $\mathbb{F}_4$ appear, they are birationally equivalent over $\mathbb{F}_4$ each other.
We present numerical conditions for the existence of natural degree-2 Abel maps for any given nodal curve. Cocoa scripst were written and have so far verified the validity of the conditions for numerous curves.
According to a conjecture of H. Clemens, the dimension of the space of rational curves on a general projective hypersurface should equal the number predicted by a naïve dimension count. In the case of a general hypersurface of degree 7 in $\mathbb{P}^5$, the conjecture predicts that the only rational curves should be lines. This has been verified by Hana and Johnsen for rational curves of degree at most 15. Here we extend their results to show that no rational curves of degree 16 lie on a general heptic fourfold.
We prove the following statement, predicted by Clemens' conjecture: A generic quintic threefold contains only finitely many smooth rational curves of degree 12.
We prove the "strong form" of the Clemens conjecture in degree 10. Namely, on a general quintic threefold F in P^4, there are only finitely many smooth rational curves of degree 10, and each curve is embedded in F with normal bundle O(-1)^2. Moreover, in degree 10, there are no singular, reduced, and irreducible rational curves, nor any reduced, reducible, and connected curves with rational components in F.
We prove an elementary method to classify, up to rigid isotopy, all nodal degree 4 real rational curves in $\mathbb{RP}^2$ that have only real double points. We show how to associate a chord diagram to a nodal real degree 4 planar rational curve and prove that such curves are defined up to rigid isotopy by their chord diagrams.
This note is devoted, after the result of Harui, arXiv:1306.5842, to solve some natural questions for non-singular plane curves of degree $d$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of zero characteristic.
In this paper we resolve the degree-2 Abel map for nodal curves. Our results are based on a previous work of the authors reducing the problem of the resolution of the Abel map to a combinatorial problem via tropical geometry. As an application, we characterize when the (symmetrized) degree-2 Abel map is not injective, a property that, for a smooth curve, is equivalent to the curve being hyperelliptic.
In this paper we present several formulae for computing the partial degrees of the defining polynomial of the offset curve to an irreducible affine plane curve given implicitly, and we see how these formulae particularize to the case of rational curves. In addition, we present a formula for computing the degree w.r.t the distance variable.
We construct the canonical structure of an irreducible projective variety on the set of connected curves of degree $d$ in $\Bbb P^n$ with rational components (some components can be multiple). The set of rational curves is open subset in the Zariski topology under this structure.

We continue our study of genus 2 curves $C$ that admit a cover $ C \to E$ to a genus 1 curve $E$ of prime degree $n$. These curves $C$ form an irreducible 2-dimensional subvariety $Ł_n$ of the moduli space $\M_2$ of genus 2 curves. Here we study the case $n=5$. This extends earlier work for degree 2 and 3, aimed at illuminating the theory for general $n$. We compute a normal form for the curves in the locus $Ł_5$ and its three distinguished subloci. Many classical results in algebraic geometry arise from investigating some extremal behaviors that appear among projective varieties not lying on any hypersurface of fixed degree. We study two numerical invariants attached to such collections of varieties: their minimal degree and their maximal number of linearly independent smallest degree hypersurfaces passing through them. We show results for curves and surfaces, and pose several questions.
We give a new method of computation of the degree of the third secant variety of a smooth curve C in P^(d-2) of genus 2 and degree d>=8, using the presentation of the third secant variety as the union of all scrolls that are defined via a g^1_3 on C.
E. Kani has shown that the Hurwitz functor, which parametrizes the (normalized) genus 2 covers of degree 3 of an elliptic curve, is representable. In this paper the corresponding moduli scheme and the universal family are explicitly calculated and described by short equations.
This paper is to give some concrete examples of the general fibers of the evaluation map of some Kontsevich mapping spaces parametrize low degree rational curves on low degree complete intersection varieties. We prove these examples are Fano or Calabi-Yau vareities of low dimension, e.g, surface and threefold. In usual, the "moduli" fibers are constructed in an abstract way, but here we give a down-to-earth interpretation to some of these fibers from the perspective of projective geometry.
In this paper we give a precise classification of the pairs $(C,\widetilde{B})$ with $C$ a smooth curve of genus $g$ and $\widetilde{B}\subset C^{(2)}$ a curve of degree two and positive self-intersection. We prove that there are no such pairs if $g < p_a(\widetilde{B})< 2g-1$. We study the singularities and self-intersection of any degree two curve in $C^{(2)}$. Moreover, we give examples of curves with arithmetic genus in the Brill-Noether range and positive self-intersection on $C\times C$.
Let $k(d)$ be the maximal possible integer $k$ such that there exists a plane curve of degree $d$ with an $A_k$--singularity. We construct a plane curve of degree $28s+9$ ($s\in\Z_{\ge 0}$) which has an $A_k$--singularity with $k=420s^2+269s+42$. Therefore one has $\underline{\lim}_{d\to\infty}k(d)/d^2\ge 15/28$ (pay attention that $15/28>1/2$).

Our concern is a nonsingular plane curve defined over a finite field of q elements which includes all the rational points of the projective plane over the field. The possible degree of such a curve is at least q+2. We prove that nonsingular plane curves of degree q+2 having the property actually exist. More precisely, we write down explicitly all of those curves. Actually, Giuseppe Tallini studied such curves in his old paper in 1961. We explain the connection between his work and ours. We prove the irreducibility of moduli spaces of rational curves on a general del Pezzo threefold of Picard rank $1$ and degree $1$. As corollaries, we confirm Geometric Manin's conjecture and enumerativity of certain Gromov-Witten invariants for these threefolds.

We prove that the incidence scheme of rational curves of degree 11 on quintic threefolds is irreducible. This implies a strong form of the Clemens conjecture in degree 11. Namely, on a general quintic threefold $F$ in $\mathbb{P}^4$, there are only finitely many smooth rational curves of degree 11, and each curve $C$ is embedded in $F$ with normal bundle $\mathcal{O}(-1) \oplus \mathcal{O}(-1)$. Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a projective algebraic curve and denote by $\mathcal{X}^{'}$ its strict dual curve. The map $γ:\mathcal{X} \longrightarrow \mathcal{X}^{'}$ is called (strict) Gauss map of $\mathcal{X}$. In this manuscript, we study the separable degree of the Gauss map of curves defined over finite fields. In particular, we give a generalization of a known result on the separable degree of the Gauss map of plane Frobenius nonclassical curves. We also obtain a characterization of certain plane strange curves.
In this note we investigate the $p$-degree function of elliptic curves over the field $\mathbb{Q}_p$ of $p$-adic numbers. The $p$-degree measures the least complexity of a non-zero $p$-torsion point on an elliptic curve. We prove some properties of this function and compute it explicitly in some special cases.
We classify real families of minimal degree rational curves that cover an embedded rational surface. A corollary is that if the projective closure of a smooth surface is not biregular isomorphic to the projective closure of the unit-sphere, then the set of minimal degree rational curves that cover the surface is either empty or of dimension at most two. Moreover, if these curves are of minimal degree over the real numbers, but not over the complex numbers, then almost all the curves are smooth. We construct the graphs of Hoffman-Singleton, Higman-Sims, and McLaughlin from certain relations on the set of non-singular conics totally tangent to the Hermitian curve of degree 6 in characteristic 5. We then interpret this geometric construction in terms of the subgroup structure of the automorphism group of this Hermitian curve.
The Zariski closure of the central path which interior point algorithms track in convex optimization problems such as linear, quadratic, and semidefinite programs is an algebraic curve. The degree of this curve has been studied in relation to the complexity of these interior point algorithms, and for linear programs it was computed by De Loera, Sturmfels, and Vinzant in 2012.
