Let $k(d)$ be the maximal possible integer $k$ such that there exists a plane curve of degree $d$ with an $A_k$--singularity. We construct a plane curve of degree $28s+9$ ($s\in\Z_{\ge 0}$) which has an $A_k$--singularity with $k=420s^2+269s+42$. Therefore one has $\underline{\lim}_{d\to\infty}k(d)/d^2\ge 15/28$ (pay attention that $15/28>1/2$).
This paper deals with the study of the behaviour of the value semigroup of a curve singularity define over a global field reduced modulo a maximal ideal. We also define a global zeta function of the curve by means of motivic integration over a suitable ring of adéles, whose reduction modulo a maximal ideal will coincide with some already known zeta functions of the singularity.
The Poincare series of an irreducible plane curve singularity equals the zeta function of its monodromy, by a result of Campillo, Delgado and Gusein-Zade. We derive this fact from a formula of Ebeling and Gusein-Zade relating the Poincare series of a quasi-homogeneous complete intersection singularity to the Saito dual of a product of zeta functions.
In a previous paper, there was defined a multi-index filtration on the ring of functions on a hypersurface singularity corresponding to its Newton diagram generalizing (for a curve singularity) the divisorial one. Its Poincaré series was computed for plane curve singularities non-degenerate with respect to their Newton diagrams. Here we use another technique to compute the Poincaré series for plane curve singularities without the assumption that they are non-degenerate with respect to their Newton diagrams. We show that the Poincaré series only depends on the Newton diagram and not on the defi…
We give an explicit formula for the exponents (i.e. the spectra up to the shift by one) of an irreducible plane curve singularity in terms of Puiseux pairs. As an application we prove in this case Hertling's conjecture that the variance (i.e. the square of the standard deviation) of the exponents is bounded by the difference between the maximal and minimal exponents divided by 12.
We prove results generalizing the classical Riemann Singularity Theorem to the case of integral, singular curves. The main result is a computation of the multiplicity of the theta divisor of an integral, nodal curve at an arbitrary point. We also conjecture a general formula for the multiplicity of points on the theta divisor of a singular integral curve and present some evidence for this conjecture. Our results give a partial answer to a question posed by Lucia Caporaso in a recent paper.
We study the local symplectic algebra of curves with semigroups $(4,5,6,7)$, $(4,5,6)$ and $(4,5,7)$. We use the method of algebraic restrictions to parameterized curves as in \cite{D1}. A new discrete invariant for algebraic restrictions to parameterized quasi-homogeneous curves is introduced. This invariant together with the method of algebraic restriction can distinguish different symplectic orbits of quasi-homogeneous curves.
We prove two formulae which express the Alexander polynomial $Δ^C$ of several variables of a plane curve singularity $C$ in terms of the ring ${\cal O}_{C}$ of germs of analytic functions on the curve. One of them expresses $Δ^C$ in terms of dimensions of some factors corresponding to a (multi-indexed) filtration on the ring ${\cal O}_{C}$. The other one gives the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial $Δ^C$ as Euler characteristics of some explicitly described spaces (complements to arrangements of projective hyperplanes). The final version of this article will be published in the Duke Math…
It is shown that the log-canonical threshold of a curve with an isolated singularity is computed by the term ideal of the curve in a suitable system of local parameters at the singularity. The proof uses the Enriques diagram of the singularity and shows that the log-canonical threshold depends only on a non-degenerate path of that diagram.
We compute the motivic Milnor fiber of a complex plane curve singularity in an inductive and combinatoric way using the extended simplified resolution graph. The method introduced in this article has a consequence that one can study the Hodge-Steenbrink spectrum of such a singularity in terms of that of a quasi-homogeneous singularity.
We show that a homology plane of general type has at worst a single cyclic quotient singular point. An example of such a surface with a singular point does exist. We also show that the automorphism group of a smooth contractible surface of general type is cyclic.
Let $C$ be an isolated plane curve singularity, and $(C,l)$ be a decorated curve. In this article we compare the equisingular deformations of $C$ and the sandwiched singularity $X(C,l)$. We will prove that for $l \gg 0$ the functor of equisingular deformations of $C$ and $(C,l)$ are equivalent. From this we deduce a proof of a formula for the dimension of the equisingular stratum. Furthermore we will show how compute the equisingularity ideal of the curve singularity $C$, given the minimal (good) resolution of $C$.
If (V,0) is an isolated complete intersection singularity and X a holomorphic vector field tangent to V one can define an index of X, the so called GSV index, which generalizes the Poincare-Hopf index. We prove that the GSV index coincides with the dimension of a certain explicitely constructed vector space, if X is deformable in a certain sense and V is a curve. We also give a sufficient algebraic criterion for X to be deformable in this way. If one considers the real analytic case one can also define an index of X which is called the real GSV index. Under the condition that X has the deforma…
A formula for the dimension of the smoothing component of a $3$-dimensional isolated Cohen--Macaulay singularity is shown. We apply this formula for a $1$-convex threefold with a connected exceptional curve which is blown down to a terminal Gorenstein singularity.
A stratified bundle is a vector bundle which is a D-module. We show that regular singularity of stratified bundles on smooth varieties in positive characteristic is preserved by pullback and that regular singularity can be checked on curves, if the ground field is large enough.
For a convenient and Newton non-degenerate singularity, the Milnor number is computed from the complement of its Newton diagram in the first quadrant, so-called Kouchnirenko's formula. In this paper, we consider tropical curves dual to subdivisions of this complement for a plane curve singularity and show the existence of a tropical curve satisfying a certain formula, which looks like a well-known formula for a real morsification due to A'Campo and Gusein-Zade.
We enumerate plane complex algebraic curves of a given degree with one singularity of any given topological type. Our approach is to compute the homology classes of the corresponding equisingular strata in the parameter spaces of plane curves. We suggest a recursive procedure, which is based on the intersection theory combined with liftings and degenerations. The procedure computes the homology class in question whenever a given singularity type is defined. Our method does not require the knowledge of all the possible deformations of a given singularity.
We give a description of the Milnor fiber and the monodromy of a singularity of the form f+zg = 0 where f and g define plane curves and have no common components. The description depends only on the topological type of the two plane curve germs defined by f and g. In particular, this gives a description of the boundary of the Milnor fiber. As a corollary, we give a simple formula for the monodromy zeta function and the Euler characteristic of the fiber.
In this paper we extend the concept of Milnor fiber and Milnor number of a curve singularity allowing the ambient space to be a quotient surface singularity. A generalization of the local δ-invariant is defined and described in terms of a Q-resolution of the curve singularity. In particular, when applied to the classical case (the ambient space is a smooth surface) one obtains a formula for the classical δ-invariant in terms of a Q-resolution, which simplifies considerably effective computations. All these tools will finally allow for an explicit description of the genus formula of a curve def…
In this paper, we study tropicalisations of families of curves with a singularity in a fixed point. The tropicalisation of such a family is a linear tropical variety. We describe its maximal dimensional cones using results about linear tropical varieties from Ardila and Klivans and from Feichtner and Sturmfels. We show that a singularity tropicalises either to a vertex of higher valence or of higher multiplicity, or to an edge of higher weight. We then classify maximal dimensional types of singular tropical curves. For those, the singularity is either a crossing of two edges, or a 3-valent ver…
We discuss a notion of integration with respect to the Euler characteristic in the projectivization $¶{\cal O}_{\C^n,0}$ of the ring ${\cal O}_{\C^n,0}$ of germs of functions on $C^n$ and show that the Alexander polynomial and the zeta-function of a plane curve singularity can be expressed as certain integrals over $¶{\cal O}_{\C^2,0}$ with respect to the Euler characteristic.
We give two formulae which express the Alexander polynomial $Δ^C$ of several variables of a plane curve singularity $C$ in terms of the ring ${\cal O}_{C}$ of germs of analytic functions on the curve. One of them expresses $Δ^C$ in terms of dimensions of some factorspaces corresponding to a (multi-indexed) filtration on the ring ${\cal O}_{C}$. The other one gives the coefficients of the Alexander polynomial $Δ^C$ as Euler characteristics of some explicitly described spaces (complements to arrangements of projective hyperplanes).
This paper addresses a very classical topic that goes back at least to Plücker: how to understand a plane curve singularity using its polar curves. Here, we explicitly construct the singular points of a plane curve singularity directly from the weighted cluster of base points of its polars. In particular, we determine the equisingularity class (or topological equivalence class) of a germ of plane curve from the equisingularity class of generic polars and combinatorial data about the non-singular points shared by them.
We consider families of curve-to-curve maps that have no singularities except those of genus 0 stable maps and that satisfy a versality condition at each singularity. We provide a universal expression for the cohomology class Poincaré dual to the locus of any given singularity. Our expressions hold for any family of curve-to-curve maps satisfying the above properties.
We give a method of counting the number of curves with a given type of singularity in a suitably ample linear series on a smooth surface using punctual Hilbert schemes. The types of singulaties for which our methods suffice include the topological type with local equation x^a +y^b with b-1 < a < 3b+1. We work out the example of curves with the analytic type of singularity with local equation x^2+y^n for 1<n<9.
Let $(S,0)$ be a rational complex surface singularity with reduced fundamental cycle, also known as a {\em minimal} singularity. Using a fundamental result by M. Spivakovsky, we explain how to get a minimal resolution of the discriminant curve for a generic projection of $(S,0)$ onto $(\C^2,0)$ directly from the resolution graph of $(S,0)$.
We study the "generic" degenerations of curves with two singular points when the points merge. First, the notion of generic degeneration is defined precisely. Then a method to classify the possible results of generic degenerations is proposed in the case of linear singularity types. We discuss possible bounds on the singularity invariants of the resulting type in terms of the initial types. In particular the strict upper bound on the resulting multiplicity is proved and a sufficient condition for $δ=const$ collision is given.
We investigate the role played by curve singularity germs in the enumeration of inflection points in families of curves acquiring singular members. Let $N \geq 2$, and consider an isolated complete intersection curve singularity germ $f \colon (\mathbb{C}^N,0) \to (\mathbb{C}^{N-1},0)$. We introduce a numerical function $m \mapsto \operatorname{AD}_{(2)}^m(f)$ that arises as an error term when counting $m^{\mathrm{th}}$-order weight-$2$ inflection points with ramification sequence $(0, \dots, 0, 2)$ in a $1$-parameter family of curves acquiring the singularity $f = 0$, and we compute $\operato…
The geometric monodromy of a plane curve singularity is a quasi-finite diffeomorphism. In this paper we locate the reduction curves of the geometric monodromy and the quadratic vanishing cycles of the singularity. An application to the geometric monodromy group is given.
Given a prime $\ell\geq 3$ and a positive integer $k \le \ell-2$, one can define a matrix $D_{k,\ell}$, the so-called Demjanenko matrix, whose rank is equal to the dimension of the Hodge group of the Jacobian ${\mathrm Jac}({\mathcal C}_{k,\ell})$ of a certain quotient of the Fermat curve of exponent $\ell$. For a fixed $\ell$, the existence of $k$ for which $D_{k,\ell}$ is singular (equivalently, for which the rank of the Hodge group of ${\mathrm Jac}({\mathcal C}_{k,\ell})$ is not maximal) has been extensively studied in the literature. We provide an asymptotic formula for the number of such…
Given a normal surface singularity $(X, Q)$ and a birational morphism to a non- singular surface $π: X \to S$, we investigate the local geometry of the exceptional divisor $L$ of $π$. We prove that the dimension of the tangent space to $L$ at $Q$ equals the number of exceptional components meeting at $Q$. Consequences relative to the existence of such birational projections contracting a prescribed number of irreducible curves are deduced. A new characterization of minimal singularities is obtained in these terms.
We explain the correspondences between twisted monopoles with Dirac type singularity and polystable twisted mini-holomorphic bundles with Dirac type singularity on a 3-dimensional torus. We also explain that they are equivalent to polystable parabolic twisted difference modules on elliptic curves.
In 1982, Tamaki Yano proposed a conjecture predicting how is the set of $b$-exponents of an irreducible plane curve singularity germ which is generic in its equisingularity class. In 1986, Pi.~Cassou-Noguès proved the conjecture for the one Puiseux pair case. In a previous work the authors proved the conjecture for two Puiseux pairs germs whose complex algebraic monodromy has distinct eigenvalues. A natural problem induced by Yano's conjecture is, for a generic equisingular deformation of an isolated plane curve singularity germ to study how the set of $b$-exponents depends on the topology of …
The intersection of a complex plane curve with a small three-sphere surrounding one of its singularities is a non-trivial link. The refined punctual Hilbert schemes of the singularity parameterize subschemes supported at the singular point of fixed length and whose defining ideals have a fixed number of generators. We conjecture that the generating function of Euler characteristics of refined punctual Hilbert schemes is the HOMFLY polynomial of the link. The conjecture is verified for irreducible singularities y^k = x^n, whose links are the k,n torus knots, and for the singularity y^4 = x^7 - …
We present the complete list of all singularity types on Gorenstein $\mathbb{Q}$-homology projective planes, i.e., normal projective surfaces of second Betti number one with at worst rational double points. The list consists of $58$ possible singularity types, each except two types supported by an example.

We show the possible Milnor numbers of deformations of semi-quasi-homogeneous isolated plane curve singularities. In Theorem 1.1 we list integers can be attained as Milnor numbers of a given semi-quasi-homogeneous singularity.
We collect some classical results about holomorphic 1-forms of a reduced complex curve singularity. They are used to study the pull-back of holomorphic 1-forms on an isolated complete intersection curve singularity under the normalization morphism. We wonder whether the Milnor number $μ$ and the Tjurina number $τ$ of any isolated plane curve singularity satisfy the inequality $3μ<4τ$.
A real morsification of a real plane curve singularity is a real deformation given by a family of real analytic functions having only real Morse critical points with all saddles on the zero level. We prove the existence of real morsifications for real plane curve singularities having arbitrary real local branches and pairs of complex conjugate branches satisfying some conditions. This was known before only in the case of all local branches being real (A'Campo, Gusein-Zade). We also discuss a relation between real morsifications and the topology of singularities, extending to arbitrary real mor…

We show the existence of toric resolution tower for an irreducible curve singularity which is explicitly described by Tschirnhausen polynomials. We deduce for a smooth affine plane curve from its topology restrictions for its singularity at infinity. For instance, we discribe the singularities at infinity (up to equisingular deformation) for curves of genus 0,1 and 2. From this follows an extension of the Abhyankar-Moh-Suzuki theorem to genus 1 and 2.
Fixed a point O on a non-singular surface S and a complete mO-primary ideal I in its local ring, the curves on the surface X obtained by blowing-up I are studied in terms of the base points of I. Criteria for the principality of these curves are obtained. New formulas for their multiplicity, intersection numbers and order of singularity at the singularities of X are given. The semigroup of branches going through a sandwiched singularity is effectively determined, too.
We prove the "End Curve Theorem," which states that a normal surface singularity $(X,o)$ with rational homology sphere link $Σ$ is a splice-quotient singularity if and only if it has an end curve function for each leaf of a good resolution tree. An "end-curve function" is an analytic function $(X,o)\to (\C,0)$ whose zero set intersects $Σ$ in the knot given by a meridian curve of the exceptional curve corresponding to the given leaf. A "splice-quotient singularity" $(X,o)$ is described by giving an explicit set of equations describing its universal abelian cover as a complete intersection in $…
We conjecture an expression for the dimensions of the Khovanov-Rozansky HOMFLY homology groups of the link of a plane curve singularity in terms of the weight polynomials of Hilbert schemes of points scheme-theoretically supported on the singularity. The conjecture specializes to our previous conjecture relating the HOMFLY polynomial to the Euler numbers of the same spaces upon setting t = -1. By generalizing results of Piontkowski on the structure of compactified Jacobians to the case of Hilbert schemes of points, we give an explicit prediction of the HOMFLY homology of a (k, n) torus knot as…
We consider flat families of reduced curves on a smooth surface S such that each member C has the same number of singularities of fixed singularity types and the corresponding (locally closed) subscheme H of the Hilbert scheme of S. We are mainly concerned with analytic resp. topological singularity types and give a sufficient condition for the smoothness of H (at C). Our results for S=P^2 seem to be quite sharp for families of cuves of small degree d.
