In this paper, we study a class of quadratic Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDEs) which arises naturally when studying the problem of utility maximization with portfolio constraints. We first establish existence and uniqueness results for such BSDEs and then, we give an application to the utility maximization problem. Three cases of utility functions will be discussed: the exponential, power and logarithmic ones.
This paper presents the integral(or differential) form of G-BSDEs, gives some kind of apriori estimates of their solutions, and under a very strong condition, proves the G-martingale representation theorem, and the existence and uniqueness theorem of G-BSDEs.
Using properties of backward stochastic differential equations we give new proofs of some well known results on BMO martingales and improve some estimates of BMO norms.
We focus on a class of BSDEs driven by a cadlag martingale and corresponding Markov type BSDE which arise when the randomness of the driver appears through a Markov process. To those BSDEs we associate a deterministic problem which, when the Markov process is a Brownian diffusion, is nothing else but a parabolic type PDE. The solution of the deterministic problem is intended as decoupled mild solution, and it is formulated with the help of a time-inhomogeneous semigroup.
We prove some new results on reflected BSDEs and doubly reflected BSDEs driven by a multi-dimensional RCLL martingale. The goal is to develop a general multi-asset framework encompassing a wide spectrum of nonlinear financial models, including as particular cases the setups studied by Peng and Xu \cite{PX2009} and Dumitrescu et al. \cite{DGQS2018} who dealt with BSDEs driven by a one-dimensional Brownian motion and a purely discontinuous martingale with a single jump. Our results are not covered by existing literature on reflected and doubly reflected BSDEs driven by a Brownian motion and a Po…
This article studies quadratic semimartingale BSDEs arising in power utility maximization when the market price of risk is of BMO type. In a Brownian setting we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a solution but show that uniqueness fails to hold in the sense that there exists a continuum of distinct square-integrable solutions. This feature occurs since, contrary to the classical Ito representation theorem, a representation of random variables in terms of stochastic exponentials is not unique. We study in detail when the BSDE has a bounded solution and derive a n…
We establish some well-posedness and comparison results for BSDEs driven by one- and multi-dimensional martingales. On the one hand, our approach is largely motivated by results and methods developed in Carbone et al. (2008) and El Karoui and Huang (1997). On the other hand, our results are also motivated by the recent developments in arbitrage pricing theory under funding costs and collateralization. A new version of the comparison theorem for BSDEs driven by a multi-dimensional martingale is established and applied to the pricing and hedging BSDEs studied in Bielecki and Rutkowski (2014) and…
In this paper, we present martingale decomposition on time scales. We establish the related backward stochastic dynamic equations on time scales (this paper BS$\nabla$E for short, concerning $\nabla$-integral on time scales) which unify backward stochastic differential equations and backward stochastic difference equations. We prove the existence and uniqueness theorem of BS$\nabla$E. This work can be considered as a unification and a generalization of similar results in backward stochastic difference equations and backward stochastic differential equations.
In this paper we prove that every random variable of the form $F(M_T)$ with $F:\real^d \to\real$ a Borelian map and $M$ a $d$-dimensional continuous Markov martingale with respect to a Markov filtration $\mathcal{F}$ admits an exact integral representation with respect to $M$, that is, without any orthogonal component. This representation holds true regardless any regularity assumption on $F$. We extend this result to Markovian quadratic growth BSDEs driven by $M$ and show they can be solved without an orthogonal component. To this end, we extend first existence results for such BSDEs under a …
We consider Lipschitz-type backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) driven by cylindrical martingales on the space of continuous functions. We show the existence and uniqueness of the solution of such infinite-dimensional BSDEs and prove that the sequence of solutions of corresponding finite-dimensional BSDEs approximates the original solution. We also consider the hedging problem in bond markets and prove that, for an approximately attainable contingent claim, the sequence of locally risk-minimizing strategies based on small markets converges to the generalized hedging strategy.
We study the well-posedness of general reflected BSDEs driven by a continuous martingale, when the coefficient f of the driver has at most quadratic growth in the control variable Z, with a bounded terminal condition and a lower obstacle which is bounded above. We obtain the basic results in this setting : comparison and uniqueness, existence, stability. For the comparison theorem and the special comparison theorem for reflected BSDEs (which allows one to compare the increasing processes of two solutions), we give intrinsic proofs which do not rely on the comparison theorem for standard BSDEs.…
In this Note we consider a quadratic backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) driven by a continuous martingale $M$ and whose generator is a deterministic function. We prove (in Theorem \ref{theorem:main}) that if $M$ is a strong homogeneous Markov process and if the BSDE has the form \eqref{BSDE} then the unique solution $(Y,Z,N)$ of the BSDE is reduced to $(Y,Z)$, \textit{i.e.} the orthogonal martingale $N$ is equal to zero showing that in a Markovian setting the "usual" solution $(Y,Z)$ has not to be completed by a strongly orthogonal even if $M$ does not enjoy the martingale repres…
This article studies the sensitivity of the power utility maximization problem with respect to the investor's relative risk aversion, the statistical probability measure, the investment constraints and the market price of risk. We extend previous descriptions of the dual domain then exploit the link between the constrained utility maximization problem and continuous semimartingale quadratic BSDEs to reduce questions on sensitivity to results on stability for such equations. This then allows us to prove appropriate convergence of the primal and dual optimizers in the semimartingale topology.
We discuss a class of Backward Stochastic Differential Equations(BSDEs) with no driving martingale. When the randomness of the driver depends on a general Markov process $X$, those BSDEs are denominated Markovian BSDEs and can be associated to a deterministic problem, called Pseudo-PDE which constitute the natural generalization of a parabolicsemilinear PDE which naturally appears when the underlying filtration is Brownian. We consider two aspects of well-posedness forthe Pseudo-PDEs: "classical" and "martingale" solutions.
In this paper we study a utility maximization problem with random horizon and reduce it to the analysis of a specific BSDE, which we call BSDE with singular coefficients, when the support of the default time is assumed to be bounded. We prove existence and uniqueness of the solution for the equation under interest. Our results are illustrated by numerical simulations.
Using a new notion of path-derivative, we study well-posedness of backward stochastic differential equation driven by a continuous martingale $M$ when $f(s,γ,y,z)$ is locally Lipschitz in $(y,z)$: \[Y_{t}=ξ(M_{[0,T]})+\int_{t}^{T}f(s,M_{[0,s]},Y_{s-},Z_{s}m_{s})d{\rm tr}[M,M]_{s}-\int_{t}^{T}Z_{s}dM_{s}-N_{T}+N_{t}\] Here, $M_{[0,t]}$ is the path of $M$ from $0$ to $t$ and $m$ is defined by $[M,M]_{t}=\int_{0}^{t}m_{s}m_{s}^{*}d{\rm tr}[M,M]_{s}$. When the BSDE is one-dimensional, we could show the existence and uniqueness of solution. On the contrary, when the BSDE is multidimensional, we sho…
In this study, we consider the exponential utility maximization problem in the context of a jump-diffusion model. To solve the problem, we rely on the dynamic programming principle and we derive from it a quadratic BSDE with jumps. Since this quadratic BSDE is driven both by a Wiener process and by a Poisson random measure having a Levy measure with infinite mass, our main task consists in establishing a new existence result for the specific BSDE introduced.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a new formalism for the deterministic analysis associated with backward stochastic differential equations driven by general c{à}dl{à}g martingales. When the martingale is a standard Brownian motion, the natural deterministic analysis is provided by the solution of a semilinear PDE of parabolic type. A significant application concerns the hedging problem under basis risk of a contingent claim $g(X\_T,S\_T)$, where $S$ (resp. $X$) is an underlying price of a traded (resp. non-traded but observable) asset, via the celebrated F{ö}llmer-Schweizer decomposition.…
In this paper we consider a class of BSDEs with drivers of quadratic growth, on a stochastic basis generated by continuous local martingales. We first derive the Markov property of a forward--backward system (FBSDE) if the generating martingale is a strong Markov process. Then we establish the differentiability of a FBSDE with respect to the initial value of its forward component. This enables us to obtain the main result of this article, namely a representation formula for the control component of its solution. The latter is relevant in the context of securitization of random liabilities aris…
We focus on a class of path-dependent problems which include path-dependent (possibly Integro) PDEs, and their representation via BSDEs driven by a cadlag martingale. For those equations we introduce the notion of decoupled mild solution for which, under general assumptions, we study existence and uniqueness and its representation via the afore mentioned BSDEs. This concept generalizes a similar notion introduced by the authors in previous papers in the framework of classical PDEs and IPDEs. For every initial condition (s, $η$), where s is an initial time and $η$ an initial path, the solution …
Let $(\mathbb{P}^{s,x})_{(s,x)\in[0,T]\times E}$ be a family of probability measures, where $E$ is a Polish space, defined on the canonical probability space ${\mathbb D}([0,T],E)$ of $E$-valued cadlag functions. We suppose that a martingale problem with respect to a time-inhomogeneous generator $a$ is well-posed. We consider also an associated semilinear {\it Pseudo-PDE} with generator $a$ for which we introduce a notion of so called {\it decoupled mild} solution and study the equivalence with the notion of martingale solution introduced in a companion paper. We also investigate well-posedness…
In this paper, we consider the classical problem of utility maximization in a financial market allowing jumps. Assuming that the constraint set is a compact set, rather than a convex one, we use a dynamic method from which we derive a specific BSDE. We then aim at showing existence and uniqueness results for the introduced BSDE. This allows us to give an explicit expression of the value function and characterize optimal strategies for our problem.
In this paper we establish the existence and the uniqueness of the solution of a special class of BSDEs for Lévy processes in the case of a Lipschitz generator of sublinear growth. We then study a related problem of logarithmic utility maximization of the terminal wealth in the filtration generated by an arbitrary Lévy process.
In this paper, we study the connections between three concepts - the reverse Hölder inequality for matrix-valued martingales, the well-posedness of linear BSDEs with unbounded coefficients, and the well-posedness of quadratic BSDE systems. In particular, we show that a linear BSDE with bmo (bounded mean oscillation) coefficients is well-posed if and only if the stochastic exponential of a related matrix-valued martingale satisfies a reverse Hölder inequality. Furthermore, we give structural conditions under which these two equivalent conditions are satisfied. Finally, we apply our results on l…
Results on the existence, uniqueness and strict comparison for solutions to a BSDE driven by a multi-dimensional RCLL martingale are established. The goal is to develop a general multi-asset framework encompassing a wide spectrum of nonlinear financial models with jumps, including as particular cases the setups studied by Peng and Xu \cite{PX2009,PX2010} and Dumitrescu et al. \cite{DGQS2018} who dealt with BSDEs driven by a one-dimensional Brownian motion and a purely discontinuous martingale with a single jump.
We introduce a generalized notion of semilinear elliptic partial differential equations where the corresponding second order partial differential operator $L$ has a generalized drift. We investigate existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions of class $C^1$. The generator $L$ is associated with a Markov process $X$ which is the solution of a stochastic differential equation with distributional drift. If the semilinear PDE admits boundary conditions, its solution is naturally associated with a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) with random terminal time, where the forward pr…
Over the past few years quadratic Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDEs) have been a popular field of research. However there are only very few examples where explicit solutions for these equations are known. In this paper we consider a class of quadratic BSDEs involving affine processes and show that their solution can be reduced to solving a system of generalized Riccati ordinary differential equations. In other words we introduce a rich and flexible class of quadratic BSDEs which are analytically tractable, i.e. explicit up to the solution of an ODE. Our results also provide ana…
The paper is directly motivated by the pricing of vulnerable European and American options in a general hazard process setup and a related study of the corresponding pre-default backward stochastic differential equations (BSDE) and pre-default reflected backward stochastic differential equations (RBSDE). We work with a generic filtration $\FF$ for which the martingale representation property is assumed to hold with respect to a square-integrable martingale $M$ and the goal of this work is of twofold. First, we aim to establish the well-posedness results and comparison theorems for a generalize…
We study a backward stochastic differential equation whose terminal condition is an integrable function of a local martingale and generator has bounded growth in $z$. When the local martingale is a strict local martingale, the BSDE admits at least two different solutions. Other than a solution whose first component is of class D, there exists another solution whose first component is not of class D and strictly dominates the class D solution. Both solutions are $\mathbb{L}^p$ integrable for any $0<p<1$. These two different BSDE solutions generate different viscosity solutions to the associated…
This paper is devoted to obtaining a wellposedness result for multidimensional BSDEs with possibly unbounded random time horizon and driven by a general martingale in a filtration only assumed to satisfy the usual hypotheses, i.e. the filtration may be stochastically discontinuous. We show that for stochastic Lipschitz generators and unbounded, possibly infinite, time horizon, these equations admit a unique solution in appropriately weighted spaces. Our result allows in particular to obtain a wellposedness result for BSDEs driven by discrete--time approximations of general martingales.
With an emphasis on generators with quadratic growth in the control variable we consider measure solutions of BSDE, a solution concept corresponding to the notion of risk neutral measure in mathematical finance. In terms of measure solutions, solving a BSDE reduces to martingale representation with respect to an underlying filtration. Measure solutions related to measures equivalent to the historical one provide classical solutions. We derive the existence of measure solutions in scenarios in which the generating functions are just continuous, of at most linear growth in the control variable (…
We study the properties of nonlinear Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDEs) driven by a Brownian motion and a martingale measure associated with a default jump with intensity process $(λ_t)$. We give a priori estimates for these equations and prove comparison and strict comparison theorems. These results are generalized to drivers involving a singular process. The special case of a $λ$-linear driver is studied, leading to a representation of the solution of the associated BSDE in terms of a conditional expectation and an adjoint exponential semi-martingale. We then apply these resu…
This paper establishes an existence and uniqueness result for the adapted solution of a general time interval multidimensional backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE), where the generator $g$ satisfies a weak stochastic-monotonicity condition and a general growth condition in the state variable $y$, and a stochastic-Lipschitz condition in the state variable $z$. This unifies and strengthens some known works. In order to prove this result, we develop some ideas and techniques employed in \citet{XiaoFan2017Stochastics} and \citet{LiuLiFan2019CAM}. In particular, we put forward and prove…
We consider the problem of utility maximization with exponential preferences in a market where the traded stock/risky asset price is modelled as a Lévy-driven pure jump process (i.e. the driving Lévy process has no Brownian component). In this setting, we study the terminal utility optimization problem in the presence of a European contingent claim. We consider in detail the BSDE (backward stochastic differential equation) characterising the value function when using an exponential utility function. First we analyse the well-definedness of the generator. This leads to some conditions on the ma…
This paper is devoted to the study of the differentiability of solutions to real-valued backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs for short) with quadratic generators driven by a cylindrical Wiener process. The main novelty of this problem consists in the fact that the gradient equation of a quadratic BSDE has generators which satisfy stochastic Lipschitz conditions involving BMO martingales. We show some applications to the nonlinear Kolmogorov equations.
In this paper, we study linear backward stochastic differential equations driven by a class of centered Gaussian non-martingales, including fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in (0,1)\setminus \{\frac12\}$. We show that, for every choice of deterministic coefficient functions, there is a square integrable terminal condition such that the equation has no solution.
The present paper is devoted to the study of backward stochastic differential equations with mean reflection formulated by Briand et al. [7]. We investigate the solvability of a generalized mean reflected BSDE, whose driver also depends on the distribution of the solution term $Y$. Using a fixed-point argument, BMO martingale theory and the $θ$-method, we establish the existence and uniqueness result for such BSDEs in several typical situations, including the case where the driver is quadratic with bounded or unbounded terminal condition.
In the present article we provide existence, uniqueness and stability results under an exponential moments condition for quadratic semimartingale backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) having convex generators. We show that the martingale part of the BSDE solution defines a true change of measure and provide an example which demonstrates that pointwise convergence of the drivers is not sufficient to guarantee a stability result within our framework.
We establish existence and uniqueness for a wide class of Markovian systems of backward stochastic differential equations (BSDE) with quadratic nonlinearities. This class is characterized by an abstract structural assumption on the generator, an a-priori local-boundedness property, and a locally-Hölder-continuous terminal condition. We present easily verifiable sufficient conditions for these assumptions and treat several applications, including stochastic equilibria in incomplete financial markets, stochastic differential games, and martingales on Riemannian manifolds.
A note on convergence rate for reflected BSDEs with quadratic generators by penalization method

We study a robust maximization problem from terminal wealth and consumption under a convex constraints on the portfolio. We state the existence and the uniqueness of the consumption-investment strategy by studying the associated quadratic backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE in short). We characterize the optimal control by using the duality method and deriving a dynamic maximum principle.
In this paper, we study the reflected solutions of one-dimensional backward stochastic differential equations driven by G-Brownian motion (RGBSDE for short). The reflection keeps the solution above a given stochastic process. In order to derive the uniqueness of reflected GBSDEs, we apply a "martingale condition" instead of the Skorohod condition. Similar to the classical case, we prove the existence by approximation via penalization.

In this paper, we study a class of second order backward stochastic differential equations (2BSDEs) with quadratic growth in coefficients. We first establish solvability for such 2BSDEs and then give their applications to robust utility maximization problems.
We provide several characterizations to identify Strong envelop (for bounded measurable process) and Strong super-martingale (for non-negative right upper semi-continuous process of the class $\Dc$). As examples of application, we prove existence and uniqueness of reflected backward stochastic differential equation with lower barrier (RBSDB in short) in two cases: $i)$. the obstacle is a measurable bounded process; $ii)$. the obstacle is a right upper semicontinuous optional process of class $\Dc$.
In this paper, we study the stability of the solutions of Backward Stochastic Differential Equations (BSDE for short) with an almost surely finite random terminal time. More precisely, we are going to show that if $(W^n)$ is a sequence of scaled random walks or a sequence of martingales that converges to a Brownian motion $W$ and if $(τ^n)$ is a sequence of stopping times that converges to a stopping time $τ$, then the solution of the BSDE driven by $W^n$ with random terminal time $τ^n$ converges to the solution of the BSDE driven by $W$ with random terminal time $τ$.
This paper establishes the well-posedness of reflected backward stochastic differential equations in the non-convex domains that satisfy a weaker version of the star-shaped property. The main results are established (i) in a Markovian framework with Hölder-continuous generator and terminal condition and (ii) in a general setting under a smallness assumption on the input data. We also investigate the connections between this well-posedness result and the theory of martingales on manifolds.
In this paper, we give several new results on solvability of a quadratic BSDE whose generator depends also on the mean of both variables. First, we consider such a BSDE using John-Nirenberg's inequality for BMO martingales to estimate its contribution to the evolution of the first unknown variable. Then we consider the BSDE having an additive expected value of a quadratic generator in addition to the usual quadratic one. In this case, we use a deterministic shift transformation to the first unknown variable, when the usual quadratic generator depends neither on the first variable nor its mean,…
We provide a stochastic representation for a general class of viscous Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equations, which has convexity and superlinear nonlinearity in its gradient term, via a type of backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) with constraint in the martingale part. We compare our result with the classical representation in terms of (super)quadratic BSDE, and show in particular that existence of a solution to the viscous HJ equation can be obtained under more general growth assumptions on the coefficients, including both unbounded diffusion coefficient and terminal data.
We study the quantitative stability of the solutions to Markovian quadratic reflected BSDEs with bounded terminal data. By virtue of BMO martingale and change of measure techniques, we obtain stability estimates for the variation of the solutions with different underlying forward processes. In addition, we propose a truncated discrete-time numerical scheme for quadratic reflected BSDEs, and obtain the explicit rate of convergence by applying the quantitative stability result.
In this paper, we analyze mean-field reflected backward stochastic differential equations when the driver has quadratic growth in the second unknown $z$. Using linearization technique and BMO martingale theory, we first apply fixed point argument to establish uniqueness and existence result for the case with bounded terminal condition and obstacle. Then, with the help of a $θ$-method, we develop a successive approximation procedure to remove the boundedness condition on the terminal condition and obstacle when the generator is concave (or convex) with respect to the 2nd unknown $z$
We provide a novel characterization of the solutions of a quadratic BSDE, which is analogous to the characterization of local martingales by convex functions. We then use our main result to show that BSDE solutions are closed under ucp convergence. Finally, we use our closure result obtain a sufficient condition for existence, and discuss specific cases in which this sufficient condition can be verified.
We study a stochastic optimal control problem for forward-backward control systems with quadratic generators. In order to establish the first and second-order variational and adjoint equations, we obtain a new estimate for one-dimensional linear BSDEs with unbounded stochastic Lipschitz coefficients involving bounded mean oscillation martingales (BMO-martingales for short) and prove the solvability for a class of multi-dimensional BSDEs with this type. Finally, a new global stochastic maximum principle is deduced.
