The main scope of this article is to define the concept of principal eigenvalue for fully non linear second order operators in bounded domains that are elliptic and homogenous. In particular we prove maximum and comparison principle, Holder and Lipschitz regularity. This leads to the existence of a first eigenvalue and eigenfunction and to the existence of solutions of Dirichlet problems within this class of operators.
In this note we discuss the (higher) regularity properties of the Signorini problem for the homogeneous, isotropic Lamé system. Relying on an observation by Schumann \cite{Schumann1}, we reduce the question of the solution's and the free boundary regularity for the homogeneous, isotropic Lamé system to the corresponding regularity properties of the obstacle problem for the half-Laplacian.
In this paper, we study the Gevrey class regularity for solutions of the spatially homogeneous Landau equations in the hard potential case and the Maxwellian molecules case.
We study the continuity in weighted Fourier Lebesgue spaces for a class of pseudodifferential operators, whose symbol has finite Fourier Lebesgue regularity with respect to $x$ and satisfies a quasi-homogeneous decay of derivatives with respect to the $ξ$ variable. Applications to Fourier Lebesgue microlocal regularity of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations are given.
We investigate minimizers defined on a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ for the Maier--Saupe Q--tensor energy used to characterize nematic liquid crystal configurations. The energy density is singular, as in Ball and Mujamdar's modification of the Ginzburg--Landau Q--tensor model, so as to constrain the competing states to have eigenvalues in the closure of a physically realistic range. We prove that minimizers are regular and in several model problems we are able to use this regularity to prove that minimizers have eigenvalues strictly within the physical range.
We prove that the set of singular times for weak solutions of the space homogeneous Landau equation with Coulomb potential constructed as in [C. Villani, Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 143 (1998), 273-307] has Hausdorff dimension at most 1/2.
We examine the regularity of the extremal solution of the nonlinear eigenvalue problem $Δ^2 u = λf(u)$ on a general bounded domain $Ω$ in $ \IR^N$, with the Navier boundary condition $ u=Δu =0 $ on $ \pOm$. Here $ λ$ is a positive parameter and $f$ is a non-decreasing nonlinearity with $f(0)=1$. We give general pointwise bounds and energy estimates which show that for any convex and superlinear nonlinearity $f$, the extremal solution $ u^*$ is smooth provided $N\leq 5$.
We develop the regularity theory of the spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with cut-off and hard potentials (for instance, hard spheres), by (i) revisiting the Lp-theory to obtain constructive bounds, (ii) establishing propagation of smoothness and singularities, (iii) obtaining estimates about the decay of the sin- gularities of the initial datum. Our proofs are based on a detailed study of the "regularity of the gain operator". An application to the long-time behavior is presented.
We prove that flat or Lipschitz free boundaries of two-phase free boundary problems governed by fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic operators and with non-zero right hand side are $C^{1,γ}$.
In this paper, we study the Gevrey regularity of spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff. We prove the propagation of Gevrey regularity for $C^\infty$ solutions with the Maxwellian decay to the Cauchy problem of spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation. The idea we use here is based on the framework of Morimoto's recent paper (See Morimoto: J. Pseudo-Differ. Oper. Appl. (2010) 1: 139-159, DOI:10.1007/s11868-010-0008-z), but we extend the range of the index $γ$ satisfying $γ+ 2s \in (-1,1)$, $s\in (0,1/2)$ and in this case we consider the kinetic factor in the form of $Φ…
In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem for the linear spatially homogeneous Boltzamnn equation with Debye-Yukawa potential. Using the spectral decomposition of the linear operator, we prove that, for an initial datum in the sense of distribution which contains the dual of the Sobolev spaces, there exists a unique solution which belongs to a more regular Sobolev space for any positive time. We also study the sharp regularity of the solution.
In this paper we obtain an energy estimate for a complete strictly hyperbolic operator with second order coefficients satisfying a log-Zygmund-continuity condition with respect to $t$, uniformly with respect to $x$, and a log-Lipschitz-continuity condition with respect to $x$, uniformly with respect to $t$.
In this article we consider a homogeneous eigenvalue problem ruled by the fractional $g-$Laplacian operator whose Euler-Lagrange equation is obtained by minimization of a quotient involving Luxemburg norms. We prove existence of an infinite sequence of variational eigenvalues and study its behavior as the fractional parameter $s\uparrow 1$ among other stability results.
In this work, we study the Cauchy problem for the radially symmetric spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation with Debye-Yukawa potential. We prove that this Cauchy problem enjoys the same smoothing effect as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional logarithmic harmonic oscillator. To be specific, we can prove the solution of the Cauchy problem belongs to Shubin spaces.
In this note we derive large-scale regularity properties of solutions to second-order linear elliptic equations with random coefficients on the half- space with homogeneous Neumann boundary data; it is a companion to arXiv:1604.02717 in which the situation for homogeneous Dirichlet boundary data was addressed. Similarly to arXiv:1604.02717, the results in this contribution are expressed in terms of a first-order Liouville principle. It follows from an excess-decay that is shown through means of a stochastic homogenization-inspired Campanato iteration. The core of this contribution is the const…
We investigate in this paper the existence of a metric which maximizes the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on Riemannian surfaces. We first prove that, in a given conformal class, there always exists such a maximizing metric which is smooth except at a finite set of conical singularities. This result is similar to the beautiful result concerning Steklov eigenvalues recently obtained by Fraser and Schoen. Then we get existence results among all metrics on surfaces of a given genus, leading to the existence of minimal isometric immersions of smooth compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ of dimens…
We study the doubly nonlinear PDE $$ |\partial_t u|^{p-2}\,\partial_t u-\textrm{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)=0. $$ This equation arises in the study of extremals of Poincaré inequalities in Sobolev spaces. We prove spatial Lipschitz continuity and Hölder continuity in time of order $(p-1)/p$ for viscosity solutions. As an application of our estimates, we obtain pointwise control of the large time behavior of solutions.
We establish the well-posedness and some quantitative stability of the spatially homogeneous Landau equation for hard potentials, using some specific Monge-Kantorovich cost, assuming only that the initial condition is a probability measure with a finite moment of order $p$ for some $p>2$. As a consequence, we extend previous regularity results and show that all non-degenerate measure-valued solutions to the Landau equation, with a finite initial energy, immediately admit analytic densities with finite entropy. Along the way, we prove that the Landau equation instantaneously creates Gaussian mo…
We study the fully nonlinear elliptic equation $F(D^2u,Du,u,x) = f$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω$, under the assumption the nonlinearity $F$ is uniformly elliptic and positively homogeneous. Recently, it has been shown that such operators have two principal "half" eigenvalues, and that the corresponding Dirichlet problem possesses solutions, if both of the principal eigenvalues are positive. In this paper, we prove the existence of solutions of the Dirichlet problem if both principal eigenvalues are negative, provided the "second" eigenvalue is positive, and generalize the anti-maximum princi…
We obtain the $C^{\a}$ regularity for weak solutions of a class of non-homogeneous ultraparabolic equation, with measurable coefficients. The result generalizes our recent $C^{\a}$ regularity results of homogeneous ultraparabolic equation.
This article concerns with the global Hölder regularity of weak solutions to a class of problems involving the fractional $(p,q)$-Laplacian, denoted by $(-Δ)^{s_1}_{p}+(-Δ)^{s_2}_{q}$, for $1<p,q<\infty$ and $s_1,s_2\in (0,1)$. We use a suitable Caccioppoli inequality and local boundedness result in order to prove the weak Harnack type inequality. Consequently, by employing a suitable iteration process, we establish the interior Hölder regularity for local weak solutions, which need not be assumed bounded. The global Hölder regularity result we prove expands and improves the regularity results…
In this paper we study a non-homogeneous eigenvalue problem involving variable growth conditions and a potential $V$. The problem is analyzed in the context of Orlicz-Sobolev spaces. Connected with this problem we also study the optimization problem for the particular eigenvalue given by the infimum of the Rayleigh quotient associated to the problem with respect to the potential $V$ when $V$ lies in a bounded, closed and convex subset of a certain variable exponent Lebesgue space.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce a new characterization of the characteristic functions for the study on the measure valued solution to the homogeneous Boltzmann equation so that it precisely captures the moment constraint in physics. This significantly improves the previous result by Cannone-Karch [CPAM 63(2010), 747-778] in the sense that the new characterization gives a complete description of infinite energy solutions for the Maxwellian cross section. In addition, the global in time smoothing effect of the infinite energy solution except for a single Dirac mass initial datum is ju…
In this work, we study the Cauchy problem for the spatially homogeneous non-cutoff Boltzamnn equation with Maxwellian molecules. We prove that this Cauchy problem enjoys Gelfand-Shilov regularizing effect, that means the smoothing properties is same as the Cauchy problem defined by the evolution equation associated to a fractional harmonic oscillator. The power of this fractional is exactly the singular index of non-cutoff collisional kernel of Boltzmann operator. So that we get the regularity of solution in the Gevery class with the sharp power and the optimal exponential decay of solutions. …
In this paper we consider minimizers of the functional \begin{equation*} \min \big\{ λ_1(Ω)+\cdots+λ_k(Ω) + Λ|Ω|, \ : \ Ω\subset D \text{ open} \big\} \end{equation*} where $D\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ is a bounded open set and where $0<λ_1(Ω)\leq\cdots\leqλ_k(Ω)$ are the first $k$ eigenvalues on $Ω$ of an operator in divergence form with Dirichlet boundary condition and with Hölder continuous coefficients. We prove that the optimal sets $Ω^\ast$ have finite perimeter and that their free boundary $\partialΩ^\ast\cap D$ is composed of a regular part, which is locally the graph of a $C^{1,α}$-regular …
We obtain parabolic transmission eigenvalue-free regions for both isotropic andanisotropic interior transmission problems with coefficients which are Lipschitznear the boundary
This manuscript derives an evolution equation for the symmetric part of the gradient of the velocity (the strain tensor) in the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation on $\mathbb{R}^3$, and proves the existence of $L^2$ mild solutions to this equation. We use this equation to obtain a simplified identity for the growth of enstrophy for mild solutions that depends only on the strain tensor, not on the nonlocal interaction of the strain tensor with the vorticity. The resulting identity allows us to prove a new family of scale-critical, necessary and sufficient conditions for the blow-up of a solu…
We apply new results on free boundary regularity of one-phase almost minimizers in periodic media to obtain a quantitative convergence rate for the shape optimizers of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue in periodic homogenization. We obtain a linear (with logarithmic factors) convergence rate for the optimizing eigenvalue. Large scale Lipschitz free boundary regularity of almost minimizers is used to apply the optimal $L^2$ homogenization theory in Lipschitz domains of Kenig, Lin and Shen. A key idea, to deal with the hard constraint on the volume, is a combination of a large scale almost dilation…
It is establish regularity results for weak solutions of quasilinear elliptic problems driven by the well known $Φ$-Laplacian operator given by \begin{equation*} \left\{\ \begin{array}{cl} \displaystyle-Δ_Φu= g(x,u), & \mbox{in}~Ω, u=0, & \mbox{on}~\partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $Δ_Φu :=\mbox{div}(ϕ(|\nabla u|)\nabla u)$ and $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}, N \geq 2,$ is a bounded domain with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. Our work concerns on nonlinearities $g$ which can be homogeneous or non-homogeneous. For the homogeneous case we consider an existence result together with a re…
We prove that the principal eigenvalue of any fully nonlinear homogeneous elliptic operator which fulfills a very simple convexity assumption satisfies a Brunn-Minkowski type inequality on the class of open bounded sets in $\mathbb{R}^n$ satisfying a uniform exterior sphere condition. In particular the result applies to the (possibly normalized) $p$-Laplacian, and to the minimal Pucci operator. The proof is inspired by the approach introduced by Colesanti for the principal frequency of the Laplacian within the class of convex domains, and relies on a generalization of the convex envelope metho…
We consider a one-phase free boundary problem governed by doubly degenerate fully non-linear elliptic PDEs with non-zero right hand side, which should be understood as an analog (non-variational) of certain double phase functionals in the theory of non-autonomous integrals. By way of brief elucidating example, such non-linear problems in force appear in the mathematical theory of combustion, as well as in the study of some flame propagation problems. In such an environment we prove that solutions are Lipschitz continuous and they fulfil a non-degeneracy property. Furthermore, we address the Ca…
We prove higher Hölder regularity for solutions of equations involving the fractional $p-$Laplacian of order $s$, when $p\ge 2$ and $0<s<1$. In particular, we provide an explicit Hölder exponent for solutions of the non-homogeneous equation with data in $L^q$ and $q>N/(s\,p)$, which is almost sharp whenever $s\,p\leq (p-1)+N/q$. The result is new already for the homogeneous equation.
In this paper, we consider the characterizations of the Lipschitz spaces and homogeneous Lipschitz spaces associated to the biharmonic operator $Δ^2.$ With this characterizations, we prove the boundedness of the Bessel potentials, fractional integrals, fractional powers, Riesz transforms and multipliers of Laplace transforms type associated to $Δ^2$ on Lipschitz spaces and homogeneous Lipschitz spaces. The proofs of these results need the language of semigroups in an essential way.
We prove the SBV regularity of the characteristic speed of the scalar hyperbolic conservation law and SBV-like regularity of the eigenvalue functions of the Jacobian matrix of flux function for general systems of conservation laws. More precisely, for the equation u_t + f(u)_x = 0, \quad u : \R^+ \times \R \to Ω\subset \R^N, we only assume the flux $f$ is $C^2$ function in the scalar case (N=1) and Jacobian matrix $Df$ has distinct real eigenvalues in the system case $(N\geq 2)$. Using the modification of the main decay estimate in Lau and localization method applied in \cite{R}, we show that …
We examine the fourth order problem $Δ^2 u = λf(u) $ in $ Ω$ with $ Δu = u =0 $ on $ \partial Ω$, where $ λ> 0$ is a parameter, $ Ω$ is a bounded domain in $ R^N$ and where $f$ is one of the following nonlinearities: $ f(u)=e^u$, $ f(u)=(1+u)^p $ or $ f(u)= \frac{1}{(1-u)^p}$ where $ p>1$. We show the regularity of all semi-stable solutions and hence of the extremal solutions, provided [N < 2 + 4 \sqrt{2} + 4 \sqrt{2 - \sqrt{2}} \approx 10.718 when $ f(u)=e^u$,] and [\frac{N}{4} < \frac{p}{p-1} + \frac{p+1}{p-1} (\sqrt{\frac{2p}{p+1}} + \sqrt{\frac{2p}{p+1} - \sqrt{\frac{2p}{p+1}}} - 1/2)] whe…
Let $A$ be a homogeneous elliptic differential operator of order $m$ on $% \Bbb{R}^{N}$ with constant complex coefficients. A partial version of the main result is as follows: Suppose that $u\in L_{loc}^{1}$ and that $Au\in L^{p}$ for some $1<p<\infty .$ Then, all the partial derivatives of order $m$ of $u$ are in $L^{p}$ if and only if $|u|$ grows slower than $|x|^{m}$ at infinity, provided that growth is measured in an $L^{1}$-averaged sense over balls with increasing radii. The necessity provides an alternative answer to the pointwise growth question investigated with mixed success in the l…
In this article, we deal about the first eigenvalue for a nonlinear gradient type elliptic system involving variable exponents growth conditions. Positivity, boundedness and regularity of associated eigenfunctions for auxiliaries systems are established.
We construct a monotone quantity for the classical obstacle problem with non-smooth obstacle, and show that the blow-ups are homogeneous functions of degree $α<2$.
In this paper we present an elementary theory about the existence of eigenvalues for fully nonlinear radially symmetric 1-homogeneous operators. A general theory for first eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of 1-homogeneous fully nonlinear operators exists in the framework of viscosity solutions. Here we want to show that for the radially symmetric operators (and one dimensional) a much simpler theory can be established, and that the complete set of eigenvalues and eigenfuctions characterized by the number of zeroes can be obtained.
In this article, we study an initial-boundary-value problem of the sixth order Boussinesq equation on a half line with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions: \[ u_{tt}-u_{xx}+βu_{xxxx}-u_{xxxxxx}+(u^2)_{xx}=0,\quad x>0\mbox{, }t>0,\] \[u(x,0)=φ(x), u_t(x,0)=ψ''(x),\] \[ u(0,t)=h_1(t), u_{xx}(0,t)=h_2(t), u_{xxxx}(0,t)=h_3(t),\] where $β=\pm1$. It is shown that the problem is locally well-posed in $H^s(\mathbb{R}^+)$ for $-\frac12<s\leq 0$ with initial condition $(φ,ψ)\in H^s(\mathbb{R}^+)\times H^{s-1}(\mathbb{R}^+)$ and boundary condition $(h_1,h_2,h_3) $ in the product space $H^{\frac{s+1}{3}}(…
We continue to study the initial-boundary-value problem of the sixth order Boussinesq equation in a quarter plane with non-homogeneous boundary conditions: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_{tt}-u_{xx}+βu_{xxxx}-u_{xxxxxx}+(u^2)_{xx}=0,\quad x,t\in \mathbb{R}^+,\\ u(x,0)=φ(x), u_t(x,0)=ψ''(x), \\ u(0,t)=h_1(t), u_{xx}(0,t)=h_2(t), u_{xxxx}(0,t)=h_3(t), \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $β=\pm1$. We show that the problem is locally analytically well-posed in the space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^+)$ for any $ s> -\frac34 $ with the initial-value data $$(φ,ψ)\in H^s(\mathbb{R}^+)\times H^{s-1}(\mathbb{R}^+)…
This paper is dedicated to the regularity of the optimal sets for the second eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian. Precisely, we prove that if the set $Ω$ minimizes the functional \[ \mathcal F_Λ(Ω)=λ_2(Ω)+Λ|Ω|, \] among all subsets of a smooth bounded open set $D\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $λ_2(Ω)$ is the second eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on $Ω$ and $Λ>0$ is a fixed constant, then $Ω$ is equivalent to the union of two disjoint open sets $Ω_+$ and $Ω_-$, which are $C^{1,α}$-regular up to a (possibly empty) closed set of Hausdorff dimension at most $d-5$, contained in the one-phase…
Sobolev regularity theory for stochastic reaction-diffusion-advection equations with spatially homogeneous colored noises and infinitesimal generators of subordinate Brownian motions
In this article we prove that solutions of singular fully nonlinear partial differential equations are $C^{1,β}$. We also prove the simplicity of the principal eigenvalues for the Dirichlet Problem associated to these operators using that regularity, a strict comparison principle and Sard's theorem.
In this paper, we prove global-in-time $\dot{\mathrm{H}}^{α,q}$-maximal regularity for a class of injective, but not invertible, sectorial operators on a UMD Banach space X , provided $q\in(1,+\infty) , $α\in(-1+1/q,1/q)$. We also prove the corresponding trace estimate, so that the solution to the canonical abstract Cauchy problem is continuous with values in a not necessarily complete trace space. In order to put our result in perspective, we also provide a short review on L q-maximal regularity which includes some recent advances such as the revisited homogeneous operator and interpolation th…
In this note we consider regularity theory for a fractional $p$-Laplace operator which arises in the complex interpolation of the Sobolev spaces, the $H^{s,p}$-Laplacian. We obtain the natural analogue to the classical $p$-Laplacian situation, namely $C^{s+α}_{loc}$-regularity for the homogeneous equation.
We consider the mixed Dirichlet-conormal problem on irregular domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Two types of regularity results will be discussed: the $W^{1,p}$ regularity and a non-tangential maximal function estimate. The domain is assumed to be Reifenberg-flat, and the interfacial boundary is either Reifenberg-flat of co-dimension $2$ or is locally sufficiently close to a Lipschitz function of $m$ variables, where $m=1,\ldots,d-2$. For the non-tangential maximal function estimate, we also require the domain to be Lipschitz.
In this article we present a new technique to obtain a lower bound for the principal Dirichlet eigenvalue of a fully nonlinear elliptic operator. We ilustrate the construction of an appropriate radial function required to obtain the bound in several examples. In particular we use our results to prove that $\lim_{p\to \infty}λ_{1,p}=λ_{1,\infty}=\left(\fracπ{2R}\right)^2$ where $λ_{1,p}$ and $λ_{1,\infty}$ are the principal eigenvalue for the homogeneous $p$-laplacian and the homogeneous infinity laplacian respectively.
