We introduce an extension of the standard Local-to-Global Principle used in the proof of the convexity theorems for the momentum map to handle closed maps that take values in a length metric space. This extension is used to study the convexity properties of the cylinder valued momentum map introduced by Condevaux, Dazord, and Molino and allows us to obtain the most general convexity statement available in the literature for momentum maps associated to a symplectic Lie group action.
We generalize symplectic convexity theorems for Hamiltonian actions with proper momentum maps to symplectic actions on orbifolds with mod-$Γ$ proper momentum maps.
Let G be a complex semisimple Lie group and τa complex antilinear involution that commutes with the Cartan involution. If H denotes the connected subgroup of τ-fixed points in G, and K is maximally compact, each H-orbit in G/K can be equipped with a Poisson structure as described by Evens and Lu. We consider symplectic leaves of certain such H-orbits with a natural hamiltonian torus action. A symplectic convexity theorem of Hilgert-Neeb-Plank then leads to van den Ban's convexity theorem for (complex) semisimple symmetric spaces.
We investigate the convexity up to symplectomorphism (called symplectic convexity) of star-shaped toric domains in $\mathbb R^4$. In particular, based on the criterion from Chaidez-Edtmair via Ruelle invariant and systolic ratio of the boundary of star-shaped toric domains, we provide elementary operations on domains that can kill the symplectic convexity. These operations only result in $C^0$-small perturbations in terms of domains' volume. Moreover, one of the operations is a systematic way to produce examples of dynamically convex but not symplectically convex toric domains. Finally, we are…
In [GMPS] we proved that the moment map image of a $b$-symplectic toric manifold is a convex $b$-polytope. In this paper we obtain convexity results for the more general case of non-toric hamiltonian torus actions on $b$-symplectic manifolds. The modular weights of the action on the connected components of the exceptional hypersurface play a fundamental role: either they are all zero and the moment map behaves as in classic symplectic one, or they are all nonzero and the moment map behaves as in the toric $b$-symplectic case studied in [GMPS].
We extend the famous convexity theorem of Atiyah, Guillemin and Sternberg to the case of non-Hamiltonian actions. We show that the image of a generalized momentum map is a bounded polytope times a vector space. We prove that this picture is stable for small perturbations of the symplectic form. We also observe that an n-dimensional torus symplectic action on a 2n-dimensional symplectic manifold, with fixed point, is Hamiltonian. We finally prove that an extension of Kirwan's convexity theorem (for compact group actions) is also true.
We consider a Hamiltonian torus action on a compact connected symplectic manifold M. For a certain class of Lagrangian submanifolds Q of M we show that the image of Q under the momentum map is convex. As an application we complete the symplectic proof of Kostant's non-linear convexity theorem.
In the early $1980$s a landmark result was obtained by Atiyah and independently Guillemin and Sternberg: the image of the momentum map for a torus action on a compact symplectic manifold is a convex polyhedron. Atiyah's proof makes use of the fact that level sets of the momentum map are connected. These proofs work in the setting of finite-dimensional compact symplectic manifolds. One can ask how these results generalize. A well-known example of an infinite-dimensional symplectic manifold with a finite-dimensional torus action is the based loop group. Atiyah and Pressley proved convexity for t…
In the context of the two dimensional sigma model, we show that classical field theory naturally defines a functor from Segal's category of Riemann surfaces to the Guillemin-Sternberg/Weinstein category of canonical relations in symplectic geometry, following ideas of Cattaneo, Mnev, and Reshetikhin. This is an expository article, based on a research tutorial.
Delzant's theorem for symplectic toric manifolds says that there is a one-to-one correspondence between certain convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and symplectic toric $2n$-manifolds, realized by the image of the moment map. I review proofs of this theorem and the convexity theorem of Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg on which it relies. Then, I describe Honda's results on the local structure of near-symplectic 4-manifolds, and inspired by recent work of Gay-Symington, I describe a generalization of Delzant's theorem to near-symplectic toric 4-manifolds. One interesting feature of the generalization …
In this paper, using similar idea as in Fukaya-Oh's work ([9]), we devise a method to compute the Fukaya category of certain exact symplectic manifolds by reducing it to the corresponding Morse category of non-Hausdorff manifold as perturbation of the Lagrangian skeleton of the exact symplectic manifold.
We study a stabilization of the symplectic category introduced by A. Weinstein as a domain for the geometric quantization functor. The symplectic category is a topological category with objects given by symplectic manifolds, and morphisms being suitable lagrangian correspondences. The main drawback of Weinstein's symplectic category is that composition of morphisms cannot always be defined. Our stabilization procedure rectifies this problem while remaining faithful to the original notion of composition. The stable symplectic category is enriched over the category of spectra (in particular, its…
A symplectic manifold gives rise to a triangulated A-infinity category, the derived Fukaya category, which encodes information on Lagrangian submanifolds and dynamics as probed by Floer cohomology. This survey aims to give some insight into what the Fukaya category is, where it comes from and what symplectic topologists want to do with it.
The convexity and Morse-theoretic properties of moment maps in symplectic geometry typically fail for presymplectic manifolds. We find a condition on presymplectic moment maps that prevents these failures. Our result applies for instance to Prato's quasifolds and to Hamiltonian actions on contact manifolds and cosymplectic manifolds.
Given a compact symplectic manifold whose symplectic form has integer periods, one associates to it a dg category based on the microlocal analysis according to Kashiwara-Schapira
We introduce the notion of a symplectic hopfoid, which is a "groupoid-like" object in the category of symplectic manifolds where morphisms are given by canonical relations. Such groupoid-like objects arise when applying a version of the cotangent functor to the structure maps of a Lie groupoid. We show that such objects are in one-to-one correspondence with symplectic double groupoids, generalizing a result of Zakrzewski concerning symplectic double groups and Hopf algebra objects in the aforementioned category. The proof relies on the fact that one can realize the core of a symplectic double …
Motivated by an attempt to better understand the notion of a symplectic stack, we introduce the notion of a symplectic hopfoid, which should be thought of as the analog of a groupoid in the so-called symplectic category. After reviewing some foundational material on canonical relations and this category, we show that symplectic hopfoids provide a characterization of symplectic double groupoids in these terms. Then, we show how such structures may be used to produce examples of symplectic orbifolds, and conjecture that all symplectic orbifolds arise via a similar construction. The symplectic st…
In this paper we exploit the geometric approach to the virtual fundamental class, due to Fukaya-Ono and Li-Tian, to compare the virtual fundamental classes of stable maps to a symplectic manifold and a symplectic submanifold whenever all constrained stable maps to the former are contained in the latter to first order. This extends versions of a statement well-known in the algebraic category to the symplectic category, where it appears to be less familiar. The latter's inherent flexibility then leads to a confirmation of Pandharipande's Gopakumar-Vafa prediction for GW-invariants of Fano classe…
K. Cieliebak, H. Hofer, J. Latschev, and F. Schlenk (CHLS) posed the problem of finding a minimal generating set for the (symplectic) capacities on a given symplectic category. We show that if the category contains a certain one-parameter family of objects, then every countably Borel-generating set of (normalized) capacities has cardinality (strictly) bigger than the continuum. This appears to be the first result regarding the problem of CHLS, except for two results of D. McDuff about the category of ellipsoids in dimension 4. We also prove that every finitely differentiably generating set of …
We show that proper Lie groupoids are locally linearizable. As a consequence, the orbit space of a proper Lie groupoid is a smooth orbispace (a Hausdorff space which locally looks like the quotient of a vector space by a linear compact Lie group action). In the case of proper (quasi-)symplectic groupoids, the orbit space admits a natural integral affine structure, which makes it into an affine orbifold with locally convex polyhedral boundary, and the local structure near each boundary point is isomorphic to that of a Weyl chamber of a compact Lie group. We then apply these results to the study…
We show that the category of Poisson manifolds and Poisson maps, the category of symplectic microgroupoids and lagrangian submicrogroupoids (as morphisms), and the category of monoids and monoid morphisms in the microsymplectic category are equivalent symmetric monoidal categories.
We define and study category $\mathcal O$ for a symplectic resolution, generalizing the classical BGG category $\mathcal O$, which is associated with the Springer resolution. This includes the development of intrinsic properties parallelling the BGG case, such as a highest weight structure and analogues of twisting and shuffling functors, along with an extensive discussion of individual examples. We observe that category $\mathcal O$ is often Koszul, and its Koszul dual is often equivalent to category $\mathcal O$ for a different symplectic resolution. This leads us to define the notion of a s…
On any symplectic manifold of dimension greater than 2, we construct a pair of smooth functions, such that on the one hand, the uniform norm of their Poisson bracket equals to 1, but on the other hand, this pair cannot be reasonably approximated (in the uniform norm) by a pair of Poisson commuting smooth functions. This comes in contrast with the dimension 2 case, where by a partial case of a result of Zapolsky, an opposite statement holds.
There is a simple and natural quantization of differential forms on odd Poisson supermanifolds, given by the relation [f,dg]={f,g} for any two functions f and g. We notice that this non-commutative differential algebra has a geometrical realization as a convolution algebra of the symplectic groupoid integrating the Poisson manifold. This quantization is just a part of a quantization of the odd symplectic category (where objects are odd symplectic supermanifolds and morphisms are Lagrangian relation) in terms of Z_2-graded chain complexes. It is a straightforward consequence of the theory of BV…
We prove that if an (n-1)-dimensional torus acts symplectically on a 2n-dimensional manifold, then the action has a fixed point if and only if the action is Hamiltonian. One may regard it as a symplectic version of Frankel theorem. The case of n=2 is the well known theorem of McDuff. From the well known example of McDuff (a six dimensional symplectic non-Hamiltonian circle action with fixed tori) and its products with copies of a two dimensional sphere with the usual rotation, the condition on the dimension of the acting torus is optimal to obtain the result.
We introduce a persistence-like pseudo-distance on Tamarkin's category and prove that the distance between an object and its Hamiltonian deformation is at most the Hofer norm of the Hamiltonian function. Using the distance, we show a quantitative version of Tamarkin's non-displaceability theorem, which gives a lower bound of the displacement energy of compact subsets of cotangent bundles.
Categorical symplectic geometry is the study of a rich collection of invariants of symplectic manifolds, including the Fukaya $A_\infty$-category, Floer cohomology, and symplectic cohomology. Beginning with work of Wehrheim and Woodward in the late 2000s, several authors have developed techniques for functorial manipulation of these invariants. We survey these functorial structures, including Wehrheim-Woodward's quilted Floer cohomology and functors associated to Lagrangian correspondences, Fukaya's alternate approach to defining functors between Fukaya $A_\infty$-categories, and the second au…
We construct a special class of semiclassical Fourier integral operators whose wave fronts are symplectic micromorphisms. These operators have very good properties: they form a category on which the wave front map becomes a functor into the cotangent microbundle category, and they admit a total symbol calculus in terms of symplectic micromorphisms enhanced with half-density germs. This new operator category encompasses the semi-classical pseudo-differential calculus and offers a functorial framework for the semi-classical analysis of the Schrödinger equation. We also comment on applications to…
Given a closed symplectic manifold (M,ω) of dimension greater than 2, we consider all Riemannian metrics on M, which are compatible with the symplectic structure ω. For each such metric, we look at the first eigenvalue λ_1 of the Laplacian associated with it. We show that λ_1 can be made arbitrarily large, when we vary the metric. This generalizes previous results of Polterovich, and of Mangoubi.
A generalized moment map is proposed for arbitrary symplectic actions of compact connected Lie groups on closed symplectic manifolds, in the spirit of the circle -valued maps introduced by D. McDuff in the case of non-Hamiltonian circle actions. We study equivariance properties of generalized moments, show that they allow reduction procedures, and obtain in the torus case a version of the Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg convexity theorem. As illustration, we reformulate a proof of M.K. Kim that "complexity one" symplectic torus actions are Hamiltonian, and give a symplectic proof of the finiteness …
In this article, we construct a $2$-category of Lagrangians in a fixed shifted symplectic derived stack S. The objects and morphisms are all given by Lagrangians living on various fiber products. A special case of this gives a $2$-category of $n$-shifted symplectic derived stacks $Symp^n$. This is a $2$-category version of Weinstein's symplectic category in the setting of derived symplectic geometry. We introduce another $2$-category $Symp^{or}$ of $0$-shifted symplectic derived stacks where the objects and morphisms in $Symp^0$ are enhanced with orientation data. Using this, we define a parti…
We introduce the notion of symplectic microfolds and symplectic micromorphisms between them. They form a monoidal category, which is a version of the "category" of symplectic manifolds and canonical relations obtained by localizing them around lagrangian submanifolds in the spirit of Milnor's microbundles.
Consider the wrapped Fukaya category W of a collection of exact Lagrangians in a Liouville manifold. Under a non-degeneracy condition implying the existence of enough Lagrangians, we show that natural geometric maps from the Hochschild homology of W to symplectic cohomology and from symplectic cohomology to the Hochschild cohomology of W are isomorphisms, in a manner compatible with ring and module structures. This is a consequence of a more general duality for the wrapped Fukaya category, which should be thought of as a non-compact version of a Calabi-Yau structure. The new ingredients are: (…
In this paper we pose the question of whether the (generalized) Mukai inequalities hold for compact, positive monotone symplectic manifolds. We first provide a method that enables one to check whether the (generalized) Mukai inequalities hold true. This only makes use of the almost complex structure of the manifold and the analysis of the zeros of the so-called generalized Hilbert polynomial, which takes into account the Atiyah-Singer indices of all possible line bundles. We apply this method to generalized flag varieties. In order to find the zeros of the corresponding generalized Hilbert pol…
A standard convexity condition on the boundary of a symplectic manifold involves an induced positive contact form (and contact structure) on the boundary; the corresponding concavity condition involves an induced negative contact form. We present two methods of symplectically attaching 2-handles to convex boundaries of symplectic 4-manifolds along links transverse to the induced contact structures. One method results in concave boundaries and depends on a fibration of the link complement over S^1; in this case the handles can be attached with any framing larger than a lower bound determined by…
This is a lecture note from a seminar course given at Tel Aviv University in Spring 2018. Part of the preliminary section is built from Kazhdan's seminar organized in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Fall 2017. The main topic of this note is a detailed introduction of Tamarkin category theory from a quantitative perspective, followed by a demonstration of various applications in symplectic topology. Many examples are provided in order to obtain certain geometric intuitions of those abstract algebraic constructions in Tamarkin category. In this note, we try to explain how standard symplect…
We consider an oriented version of the stable symplectic category defined in \cite{N}. We show that the group of monoidal automorphisms of this category, that fix each object, contains a natural subgroup isomorphic to the solvable quotient (or a graded-abelian quotient) of the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group. This establishes a stable version of a conjecture of Kontsevich which states that groups closely related to the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group act on the moduli space of certain field theories \cite{KO}. The above quotient of the Grothendieck--Teichmüller group is also shown to be the mo…
We show that the cone associated with a moment map for an action of a torus on a contact compact connected manifold is a convex polyhedral cone and that the moment map has connected fibers provided the dimension of the torus is bigger than 2 and that no orbit is tangent to the contact distribution. This may be considered as a version of the Atiyah - Guillemin - Sternberg convexity theorem for torus actions on symplectic cones and as a direct generalization of the convexity theorem of Banyaga and Molino for completely integrable torus actions on contact manifolds.
Homological mirror symmetry (HMS) asserts that the Fukaya category of a symplectic manifold is derived equivalent to the category of coherent sheaves on the mirror complex manifold. Without suitable enlargement (split closure) of the Fukaya category, certain objects of it are missing to prevent HMS from being true. One possible solution is to include coisotropic branes into the Fukaya category. This paper gives a construction for linear symplectic tori of a version of Fukaya category including coisotropic branes by using a doubling procedure, and discussing the relation between the Fukaya cate…
This paper considers the enhanced symplectic "category" for purposes of quantizing quasi-Hamiltonian $G$-spaces, where $G$ is a compact simple Lie group. Our starting point is the well-acknowledged analogy between the cotangent bundle $T^*G$ in Hamiltonian geometry and the internally fused double $D(G)=G\times G$ in quasi-Hamiltonian geometry. Guillemin and Sternberg consider the former, studing half-densities and phase functions on its so-called character Lagrangians $Λ_{\mathcal{O}}\subseteq T^*G$. Our quasi-Hamiltonian counterpart replaces these character Lagrangians with the universal cent…
We exhibit Lerman's cutting procedure as a functor from the category of manifolds-with-boundary equipped with free circle actions near the boundary, with so-called equivariant transverse maps, to the category of manifolds and smooth maps. We then apply the cutting procedure to differential forms that are not necessarily symplectic, to distributions that are not necessarily contact, and to submanifolds. We obtain an inverse functor from so-called equivariant radial-squared blowup.
During the last thirty years, symplectic or Marsden--Weinstein reduction has been a major tool in the construction of new symplectic manifolds and in the study of mechanical systems with symmetry. This procedure has been traditionally associated to the canonical action of a Lie group on a symplectic manifold, in the presence of a momentum map. In this note we show that the symplectic reduction phenomenon has much deeper roots. More specifically, we will find symplectically reduced spaces purely within the Poisson category under hypotheses that do not necessarily imply the existence of a moment…
Given a collection of exact Lagrangians in a Liouville manifold, we construct a map from the Hochschild homology of the Fukaya category that they generate to symplectic cohomology. Whenever the identity in symplectic cohomology lies in the image of this map, we conclude that every Lagrangian lies in the idempotent closure of the chosen collection. The main new ingredients are (1) the construction of operations controlled by discs with two outputs on the Fukaya category, and (2) the Cardy relation.
We introduce a contravariant functor, called Floer functor, from the category of Lagrangian conductors of a symplectic manifold to the homotopy category of bounded chain complexes of open strings in this manifold. The latter two categories are defined for all symplectic manifolds, whereas Floer functor is defined for semipositive manifolds which are either closed or convex at infinity. We then prove that when the first Chern class of the symplectic manifold vanishes, Lagrangian spheres define Lagrangian conductors so that in particular their integral Floer cohomology is well defined. This requ…
These notes accompany a lecture about the topology of symplectic (and other) quotients. The aim is two-fold: first to advertise the ease of computation in the symplectic category; and second to give an account of some new computations for weighted projective spaces. We start with a brief exposition of how orbifolds arise in the symplectic category, and discuss the techniques used to understand their topology. We then show how these results can be used to compute the Chen-Ruan orbifold cohomology ring of abelian symplectic reductions. We conclude by comparing the several rings associated to a w…
Quantization problems suggest that the category of symplectic manifolds and symplectomorphisms be augmented by the inclusion of canonical relations as morphisms. These relations compose well when a transversality condition is satisfied, but the failure of the most general compositions to be smooth manifolds means that the canonical relations do not comprise the morphisms of a category. We discuss several existing and potential remedies to the nontransversality problem. Some of these involve restriction to classes of lagrangian submanifolds for which the transversality property automatically ho…
We define a local version of the extended symplectic category, the cotangent microbundle category, MiC, which turns out to be a true monoidal category. We show that a monoid in this category induces a Poisson manifold together with the local symplectic groupoid integrating it. Moreover, we prove that monoid morphisms produce Poisson maps between the induced Poisson manifolds in a functorial way. This gives a functor between the category of monoids in MiC and the category of Poisson manifolds and Poisson maps. Conversely, the semi-classical part of the Kontsevich star-product associated to a re…
Two natural symplectic constructions, the Lagrangian suspension and Seidel's quantum representation of the fundamental group of the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, Ham(M), with (M,ω) a monotone symplectic manifold, admit categorifications as actions of the fundamental groupoid Π(Ham(M)) on a cobordism category recently introduced in \cite{Bi-Co:cob2} and, respectively, on a monotone variant of the derived Fukaya category. We show that the functor constructed in \cite{Bi-Co:cob2} that maps the cobordism category to the derived Fukaya category is equivariant with respect to these actions.
