Delzant's theorem for symplectic toric manifolds says that there is a one-to-one correspondence between certain convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and symplectic toric $2n$-manifolds, realized by the image of the moment map. I review proofs of this theorem and the convexity theorem of Atiyah-Guillemin-Sternberg on which it relies. Then, I describe Honda's results on the local structure of near-symplectic 4-manifolds, and inspired by recent work of Gay-Symington, I describe a generalization of Delzant's theorem to near-symplectic toric 4-manifolds. One interesting feature of the generalization is the failure of convexity, which I discuss in detail. The first three chapters are primarily expository, duplicate material found elsewhere, and may be skipped by anyone familiar with the material, but are included for completeness.
In this note we describe the natural coordinatizations of a Delzant space defined as a reduced phase space (symplectic geometry view-point) and give explicit formulas for the coordinate transformations. For each fixed point of the torus action on the Delzant polytope, we have a maximal coordinatization of an open cell in the Delzant space which contains the fixed point. This cell is equal to the domain of definition of one of the natural coordinatizations of the Delzant space as a toric variety (complex algebraic geometry view-point), and we give an explicit formula for the toric variety coord…
We give an intrinsic definition of toric symplectic stacks, and show that they are classified by simple convex polytopes equipped with some additional combinatorial data. This generalizes Delzant's classification of toric symplectic manifolds. As an application, we show that any toric symplectic stack can be deformed to an ineffective toric orbifold.
The notion of a toric origami manifold, which weakens the notion of a symplectic toric manifold, was introduced by Cannas da Silva-Guillemin-Pires \cite{ca-gu-pi11} and they show that toric origami manifolds bijectively correspond to origami templates via moment maps, where an origami template is a collection of Delzant polytopes with some folding data. Like a fan is associated to a Delzant polytope, a multi-fan introduced in \cite{ha-ma03} and \cite{masu99} can be associated to an oriented origami template. In this paper, we discuss their relationship and show that any simply connected compac…
In this paper, we extend the Atiyah--Guillemin--Sternberg convexity theorem and Delzant's classification of symplectic toric manifolds to presymplectic manifolds. We also define and study the Morita equivalence of presymplectic toric manifolds and of their corresponding framed momentum polytopes, which may be rational or non-rational. Toric orbifolds, quasifolds and non-commutative toric varieties may be viewed as the quotient of our presymplectic toric manifolds by the kernel isotropy foliation of the presymplectic form.
A key result in equivariant symplectic geometry is Delzant's classification of compact connected symplectic toric manifolds. The moment map induces an embedding of the quotient of the manifold by the torus action into the dual of the Lie algebra of the torus; its image is a unimodular ("Delzant") polytope; this gives a bijection between unimodular polytopes and isomorphism classes of compact connected symplectic toric manifolds. In this paper we extend Delzant's classification to non-compact symplectic toric manifolds. For a non-compact symplectic toric manifold the image of the moment map nee…
This paper introduces the notion of twisted toric manifolds which is a generalization of one of symplectic toric manifolds, and proves the weak Delzant type classification theorem for them. The computation methods for their fundamental groups, cohomology groups in general cases, and signatures in four-dimensional cases are also given.
We generalize a theorem of Delzant classifying compact connected symplectic manifolds with completely integrable torus actions to certain singular symplectic spaces. The assumption on singularities is that if they are not finite quotient then they are isolated.
Let M^{2n} be a symplectic toric manifold with a fixed T^n-action and with a toric Kähler metric g. Abreu asked whether the spectrum of the Laplace operator $Δ_g$ on $\mathcal{C}^\infty(M)$ determines the moment polytope of M, and hence by Delzant's theorem determines M up to symplectomorphism. We report on some progress made on an equivariant version of this conjecture. If the moment polygon of M^4 is generic and does not have too many pairs of parallel sides, the so-called equivariant spectrum of M and the spectrum of its associated real manifold M_R determine its polygon, up to translation …
We define toric contact manifolds in arbitrary codimension and give a description of such manifolds in terms of a kind of labelled polytope embedded into a grassmannian, analogous to the Delzant polytope of a toric symplectic manifold.
Toric varieties play an important role both in symplectic and complex geometry. In symplectic geometry, the construction of a symplectic toric manifold from a smooth polytope is due to Delzant. In algebraic geometry, there is a more general construction using fans rather than polytopes. However, in case the fan is induced by a smooth polytope Audin showed both constructions to give isomorphic projective varieties. For rational but not necessarily smooth polytopes the Delzant construction was refined by Lerman and Tolman, leading to symplectic toric orbifolds or more generally, symplectic toric…
We study Hamiltonian actions on $b$-symplectic manifolds with a focus on the effective case of half the dimension of the manifold. In particular, we prove a Delzant-type theorem that classifies these manifolds using polytopes that reside in a certain enlarged and decorated version of the dual of the Lie algebra of the torus.
The goal of this paper is to classify symplectic toric stratified spaces with isolated singularities. This extends a result of Burns, Guillemin, and Lerman which carries out this classification in the compact connected case. In making this classification, it is necessary to classify symplectic toric cones. Via a well-known equivalence between symplectic toric cones and contact toric manifolds, this allows for the classification of contact toric manifolds as well, extending Lerman's classification of compact connected contact toric manifolds.
In this paper we study whether symplectic toric manifolds are symplectically cohomologically rigid. Here we say that symplectic cohomological rigidity holds for some family of symplectic manifolds if the members of that family can be distinguished by their integral cohomology rings and the cohomology classes of their symplectic forms. We show how toric degenerations can be used to produce the symplectomorphisms necessary to answer this question. As a consequence we prove that symplectic cohomological rigidity holds for the family of symplectic Bott manifolds with rational symplectic form whose…
Given two 4-dimensional ellipsoids whose symplectic sizes satisfy a specified inequality, we prove that a certain loop of symplectic embeddings between the two ellipsoids is noncontractible. The statement about symplectic ellipsoids is a particular case of a more general result. Given two convex toric domains whose first and second ECH capacities satisfy a specified inequality, we prove that a certain loop of symplectic embeddings between the two convex toric domains is noncontractible. We show how the constructed loops become contractible if the target domain becomes large enough. The proof i…
Embedded contact homology gives a sequence of obstructions to four-dimensional symplectic embeddings, called ECH capacities. In "Symplectic embeddings into four-dimensional concave toric domains", the author, Choi, Frenkel, Hutchings and Ramos computed the ECH capacities of all "concave toric domains", and showed that these give sharp obstructions in several interesting cases. We show that these obstructions are sharp for all symplectic embeddings of concave toric domains into "convex" ones. In an appendix with Choi, we prove a new formula for the ECH capacities of convex toric domains, which …
We calculate the Riemann-Roch number of some of the pentagon spaces defined in [Klyachko,Kapovich-Millson,HK1]. Using this, we show that while the regular pentagon space is diffeomorphic to a toric variety, even symplectomorphic to one under arbitrarily small perturbations of its symplectic structure, it does not admit a symplectic circle action. In particular, within the cohomology classes of symplectic structures, the subset admitting a circle action is not closed.
According to Lerman, compact connected toric contact 3-manifolds with a non-free toric action whose moment cone spans an angle greater than $π$ are overtwisted, thus non-fillable. In contrast, we show that all compact connected toric contact manifolds in dimension greater than three are weakly symplectically fillable and most of them are strongly symplectically fillable. The proof is based on the Lerman's classification of toric contact manifolds and on our observation that the only contact manifolds in higher dimensions that admit free toric action are the cosphere bundle of $T^d, d\geq3$ $(T…
We prove a version of Sandon's conjecture on the number of translated points of contactomorphisms for the case of prequantization bundles over certain closed monotone symplectic toric manifolds. Namely we show that any contactomorphism of such a prequantization bundle lying in the identity component of the contactomorphism group possesses at least $N$ translated points, where $N$ is the minimal Chern number of the symplectic toric manifold. The proof relies on the theory of generating functions coupled with equivariant cohomology, whereby we adapt Givental's approach to the Arnold conjecture f…
ECH capacities give obstructions to symplectically embedding one symplectic four-manifold with boundary into another. We compute the ECH capacities of a large family of symplectic four-manifolds with boundary, called "concave toric domains". Examples include the (nondisjoint) union of two ellipsoids in $\mathbb{R}^4$. We use these calculations to find sharp obstructions to certain symplectic embeddings involving concave toric domains. For example: (1) we calculate the Gromov width of every concave toric domain; (2) we show that many inclusions of an ellipsoid into the union of an ellipsoid and…
A toric domain is a subset of $(\mathbb{C}^n,ω_{\text{std}})$ which is invariant under the standard rotation action of $\mathbb{T}^n$ on $\mathbb{C}^n$. For a toric domain $U$ from a certain large class for which this action is not free, we find a corresponding toric domain $V$ where the standard action is free, and for which $c(U)=c(V)$ for any symplectic capacity $c$. Michael Hutchings gives a combinatorial formula for calculating his embedded contact homology symplectic capacities for certain toric four-manifolds on which the $\mathbb{T}^2$-action is free. Our theorem allows one to extend t…
A toric degeneration in algebraic geometry is a process where a given projective variety is being degenerated into a toric one. Then one can obtain information about the original variety via analyzing the toric one, which is a much easier object to study. Harada and Kaveh described how one incorporates a symplectic structure into this process, providing a very useful tool for solving certain problems in symplectic geometry. Below we present applications of this method to questions about the Gromov width, and cohomological rigidity problems.
In this paper we completely classify symplectic actions of a torus $T$ on a compact connected symplectic manifold $(M, σ)$ when some, hence every, principal orbit is a coisotropic submanifold of $(M, σ)$. That is, we construct an explicit model, defined in terms of certain invariants, of the manifold, the torus action and the symplectic form. The invariants are invariants of the topology of the manifold, of the torus action, or of the symplectic form. In order to deal with symplectic actions which are not Hamiltonian, we develop new techniques, extending the theory of Atiyah, Guillemin-Sternbe…
We give a generalization of toric symplectic geometry to Poisson manifolds which are symplectic away from a collection of hypersurfaces forming a normal crossing configuration. We introduce the tropical momentum map, which takes values in a generalization of affine space called a log affine manifold. Using this momentum map, we obtain a complete classification of such manifolds in terms of decorated log affine polytopes, hence extending the classification of symplectic toric manifolds achieved by Atiyah, Guillemin-Sternberg, Kostant, and Delzant.
In \cite{btoric}, Guillemin et al. proved a Delzant-type theorem which classifies $b$-symplectic toric manifolds. More generally, in \cite{torus} they proved a similar convexity result for general Hamiltonian torus action on $b$-symplectic manifolds. In this paper, we provide a new way to construct $b$-symplectic toric manifolds from usual toric manifolds. Conversely, through this way, we can also decompose a $b$-symplectic toric manifolds to usual toric manifolds. Finally, we will try to prove that this kind of decomposition is useful, although the symplectic structure for our decomposition o…
We introduce the cutting construction of possibly non-compact symplectic toric manifolds, in particular, toric symplectic cones that correspond to a weakly convex good cone. Since the symplectization of a toric contact manifold is a toric symplectic cone, we can also construct toric contact manifolds that correspond to a weakly convex good cone by the cutting construction. (Note that these toric contact manifolds can not be constructed by Delzant construction.) We further prove there are no toric Sasakian structures on these contact manifolds. From this, contact toric manifolds of toric K-cont…
Given a symplectic manifold, we ask in how many different ways can a torus act on it. Classification theorems in equivariant symplectic geometry can sometimes tell that two Hamiltonian torus actions are inequivalent, but often they do not tell whether the underlying symplectic manifolds are (non-equivariantly) symplectomorphic. For two dimensional torus actions on closed symplectic four-manifolds, we reduce the counting question to combinatorics, by expressing the manifold as a symplectic blowup in a way that is compatible with all the torus actions simultaneously. For this we use the theory o…
We define and solve the toric version of the symplectic ball packing problem, in the sense of listing all 2n-dimensional symplectic-toric manifolds which admit a perfect packing by balls embedded in a symplectic and torus equivariant fashion. In order to do this we first describe a problem in geometric-combinatorics which is equivalent to the toric symplectic ball packing problem. Then we solve this problem using arguments from Convex Geometry and Delzant theory. Applications to symplectic blowing-up are also presented, and some further questions are raised in the last section.
Given a $G$-toric, folded-symplectic manifold with co-orientable folding hypersurface, we show that its orbit space is naturally a manifold with corners $W$ equipped with a smooth map $ψ: W \to \frak{g}^*$, where $\frak{g}^*$ is the dual of the Lie algebra of the torus, $G$. The map $ψ$ has fold singularities at points in the image of the folding hypersurface under the quotient map to $W$ and it is a unimodular local embedding away from these points. Thus, to every $G$-toric, folded-symplectic manifold we can associate its orbit space data $ψ:W \to \frak{g}^*$, a unimodular map with folds. We …
We prove that every symplectic toric orbifold is a centered reduction of a Cartesian product of weighted projective spaces. A theorem of Abreu and Macarini shows that if the level set of the reduction passes through a non-displaceable set then the image of this set in the reduced space is also non-displaceable. Using this result we show that every symplectic toric orbifold contains a non-displaceable fiber and we identify this fiber.
We use Seidel representation for symplectic orbifolds constructed in Tseng and Wang to compute the quantum cohomology ring of a compact symplectic toric orbifold $(\X,ω)$.
After observing that the well-known convexity theorems of symplectic geometry also hold for compact contact manifolds with an effective action of a torus whose Reeb vector field corresponds to an element of the Lie algebra of the torus, we use this fact together with a recent symplectic orbifold version of Delzant's theorem due to Lerman and Tolman [LT] to show that every such compact toric contact manifold can be obtained by a contact reduction from an odd dimensional sphere.
We study Furuta's finite dimensional approximations for the flow lines of the Moment action functional for toric symplectic orbifolds and show their relation to Givental's toric map space.
This paper studies the local and global aspects of semi-toric integrable systems, introduced by Vu Ngoc, using ideas stemming from the theory of Hamiltonian S^1-spaces developed by Karshon. First, we show how any labeled convex polygon associated to a semi-toric system (as defined by Vu Ngoc) determines Karshon's labeled directed graph which classifies the underlying Hamiltonian S^1-space up to isomorphism. Then we characterize adaptable semi-toric systems, i.e. those whose underlying Hamiltonian S^1-action can be extended to an effective Hamiltonian T^2-action, as those which have at least on…
We use positive S^1-equivariant symplectic homology to define a sequence of symplectic capacities c_k for star-shaped domains in R^{2n}. These capacities are conjecturally equal to the Ekeland-Hofer capacities, but they satisfy axioms which allow them to be computed in many more examples. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the capacities c_k of any "convex toric domain" or "concave toric domain". As an application, we determine optimal symplectic embeddings of a cube into any convex or concave toric domain. We also extend the capacities c_k to functions of Liouville domains whic…
By Delzant's theorem, closed symplectic toric manifolds are classified by the images of moment maps. In the case of a generalized Bott manifold, this image is a polytope $P$ combinatorially equivalent to the product of simplices. We compute the Gromov width of generalized Bott manifolds in terms of the defining inequalities of $P$.
We outline a proof that the stack of symplectic toric G-manifolds over a fixed orbit space W is a torsor for the stack of symplectic toric G-principal bundles over W.
In this paper we give concrete estimations for the pseudo symplectic capacities of toric manifolds in combinatorial data. Some examples are given to show that our estimates can compute their pseudo symplectic capacities. As applications we also estimate the symplectic capacities of the polygon spaces. Other related results are impacts of symplectic blow-up on symplectic capacities, symplectic packings in symplectic toric manifolds, the Seshadri constant of an ample line bundle on toric manifolds, and symplectic capacities of symplectic manifolds with $S^1$-action.
In the present paper we introduce and study a new notion of toric manifold in the quaternionic setting. We develop a construction with which, starting from appropriate $m$-dimensional Delzant polytopes, we obtain manifolds of real dimension $4m$, acted on by $m$ copies of the group ${\rm Sp}(1)$ of unit quaternions. These manifolds are quaternionic regular and can be endowed with a $4$-plectic structure and a generalized moment map. Convexity properties of the image of the moment map are studied. Quaternionic toric manifolds appear to be a large enough class of examples where one can test and …
Suppose that a compact $r$-dimensional torus $T^r$ acts in a holomorphic and Hamiltonian manner on polarized complex $d$-dimensional projective manifold $M$, with nowhere vanishing moment map $Φ$. Assuming that $Φ$ is transverse to the ray through a given weight $\boldsymbolν$, associated to these data there is a complex $(d-r+1)$-dimensional polarized projective orbifold $\hat{M}_{\boldsymbolν}$ (referred to as the $\boldsymbolν$-th \textit{conic transform} of $M$). Namely, $\hat{M}_{\boldsymbolν}$ is a suitable quotient of the inverse image of the ray in the unit circle bundle of the polariz…
We extract from a toric model of the Chekanov-Schlenk exotic torus in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ methods of construction of Lagrangian submanifolds in toric symplectic manifolds. These constructions allow for some control of the monotonicity. We recover this way some known monotone Lagrangians in the toric symplectic manifolds $\mathbb{CP}^2$ and $\mathbb{CP}^1 \times \mathbb{CP}^1$ as well as new examples.
