Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p. We study J.-P. Serre's notion of G-complete reducibility for subgroups of G. In particular, for a subgroup H and a normal subgroup N of H, we look at the relationship between G-complete reducibility of N and of H, and show that these properties are equivalent if H/N is linearly reductive, generalizing a result of Serre. We also study the case when H = MN with M a G-completely reducible subgroup of G which normalizes N. We show that if G is connected, N and M are connected commuting G-completely reducible subgroups of G, and p is good for G, then H = MN is also G-completely reducible.
Let $k$ be a nonperfect field of characteristic $2$. Let $G$ be a $k$-split simple algebraic group of type $E_6$ (or $G_2$) defined over $k$. In this paper, we present the first examples of nonabelian non-$G$-completely reducible $k$-subgroups of $G$ which are $G$-completely reducible over $k$. Our construction is based on that of subgroups of $G$ acting non-separably on the unipotent radical of a proper parabolic subgroup of $G$ in our previous work. We also present examples with the same property for a non-connected reductive group $G$. Along the way, several general results concerning compl…
Let G be a connected reductive linear algebraic group. We use geometric methods to investigate G-completely reducible subgroups of G, giving new criteria for G-complete reducibility. We show that a subgroup of G is G-completely reducible if and only if it is strongly reductive in G; this allows us to use ideas of R.W. Richardson and Hilbert--Mumford--Kempf from geometric invariant theory. We deduce that a normal subgroup of a G-completely reducible subgroup of G is again G-completely reducible, thereby providing an affirmative answer to a question posed by J.-P. Serre, and conversely we prove …
Let k be a separably closed field. Let G be a reductive algebraic k-group. In this paper, we study Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of G over k. In particular, using the recently proved center conjecture of Tits, we show that the centralizer of a k-subgroup H of G is G-completely reducible over k if it is reductive and H is G-completely reducible over k. We also show that a regular reductive k-subgroup of G is G-completely reducible over k. Various open problems concerning complete reducibility are discussed. We present examples where the number of overgroups of irreducible…
Let $k$ be a nonperfect separably closed field. Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over $k$. We study rationality problems for Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of $G$. In particular, we present the first example of a connected nonabelian $k$-subgroup $H$ of $G$ that is $G$-completely reducible but not $G$-completely reducible over $k$, and the first example of a connected nonabelian $k$-subgroup $H'$ of $G$ that is $G$-completely reducible over $k$ but not $G$-completely reducible. This is new: all previously known such examples are for finite (or non-…
Let G be a reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. A subgroup of G is said to be separable in G if its global and infinitesimal centralizers have the same dimension. We study the interaction between the notion of separability and Serre's concept of G-complete reducibility for subgroups of G. The separability hypothesis appears in many general theorems concerning G-complete reducibility. We demonstrate that many of these results fail without this hypothesis. On the other hand, we prove that if G is a connected reductive group and p is very go…
Let $k$ be a nonperfect separably closed field. Let $G$ be a (possibly non-connected) reductive group defined over $k$. We study rationality problems for Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of $G$. In our previous work, we constructed examples of subgroups $H$ of $G$ that are $G$-completely reducible but not $G$-completely reducible over $k$ (and vice versa). In this paper, we give a theoretical underpinning of those constructions. To illustrate our result, we present a new such example in a non-connected reductive group of type $D_4$ in characteristic $2$. Then using Geometri…
We study a relative variant of Serre's notion of $G$-complete reducibility for a reductive algebraic group $G$. We let $K$ be a reductive subgroup of $G$, and consider subgroups of $G$ which normalise the identity component $K^{\circ}$. We show that such a subgroup is relatively $G$-completely reducible with respect to $K$ if and only if its image in the automorphism group of $K^{\circ}$ is completely reducible. This allows us to generalise a number of fundamental results from the absolute to the relative setting. We also derive analogous results for Lie subalgebras of the Lie algebra of $G$, …
In this paper we present an algorithm for determining whether a subgroup H of a non-connected reductive group G is G-completely reducible. The algorithm consists of a series of reductions; at each step, we perform operations involving connected groups, such as checking whether a certain subgroup of G^0 is G^0 -cr. This essentially reduces the problem of determining G-complete reducibility to the connected case.
Completely reducible subcomplexes of spherical buildings was defined by J.P. Serre and are used in studying subgroups of reductive algebraic groups. We begin the study of completely reducible subcomplexes of twin buildings and how they may be used to study subgroups of algebraic groups over a ring of Laurent polynomials and Kac-Moody groups by looking at the Euclidean twin building case.
The notion of a \emph{$G$-completely reducible} subgroup is important in the study of algebraic groups and their subgroup structure. It generalizes the usual idea of complete reducibility from representation theory: a subgroup $H$ of a general linear group $G= {\rm GL}_n(k)$ is $G$-completely reducible if and only if the inclusion map $i\colon H\rightarrow {\rm GL}_n(k)$ is a completely reducible representation of $H$. In these notes I give an introduction to the theory of complete reducibility and its applications, and explain an approach to the subject using geometric invariant theory.
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. The aim of this paper is to present a method to find triples $(G,M,H)$ with the following three properties. Property 1: $G$ is simple and $k$ has characteristic 2. Property 2: $H$ and $M$ are closed reductive subgroups of $G$ such that $H<M<G$, and $(G,M)$ is a reductive pair. Property 3: $H$ is $G$-completely reducible, but not $M$-completely reducible. We exhibit our method by presenting a new example of such a triple in $G=E_7$. Then we consider a rationality problem and a problem concerning con…
For a group $H$ and a non empty subset $Γ\subseteq H$, the commuting graph $G=\mathcal{C}(H,Γ)$ is the graph with $Γ$ as the node set and where any $x,y \in Γ$ are joined by an edge if $x$ and $y$ commute in $H$. We prove that any simple graph can be obtained as a commuting graph of a Coxeter group, solving the realizability problem in this setup. In particular we can recover every Dynkin diagram of ADE type as a commuting graph. Thanks to the relation between the ADE classification and finite subgroups of $\SL(2,\C)$, we are able to rephrase results from the {\em McKay correspondence} in term…
Let $k$ be a nonperfect separably closed field. Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over $k$. We study rationality problems for Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of $G$. In particular, we present a new example of subgroup $H$ of $G$ of type $D_4$ in characteristic $2$ such that $H$ is $G$-completely reducible but not $G$-completely reducible over $k$ (or vice versa). This is new: all known such examples are for $G$ of exceptional type. We also find a new counterexample for Külshammer's question on representations of finite groups for $G$ of type $D_4$. A…
Let G be the free product of groups A and B with commuting subgroups H \leqslant A and K \leqslant B, and let C be the class of all finite groups or the class of all finite p-groups. We derive the description of all C-separable cyclic subgroups of G provided this group is residually a C-group. We prove, in particular, that if A, B are finitely generated nilpotent groups and H, K are p'-isolated in the free factors, then all p'-isolated cyclic subgroups of G are separable in the class of all finite p-groups. The same statement is true provided A, B are free and H, K are p'-isolated and cyclic.
Let αbe an automorphism of the totally disconnected group G. The compact open subgroup, V, if G is tidy for αif [α(V') : α(V')\cap V'] is minimised at V, where V' ranges over all compact open subgroups of G. Identifying a subgroup tidy for αis analogous to identifying a basis which puts a linear transformation into Jordan canonical form. This analogy is developed here by showing that commuting automorphisms have a common tidy subgroup of G and, conversely, that a group H of automorphisms having a common tidy subgroup V is abelian modulo the automorphisms which leave V invariant. Certain subgro…
Motivated in part by representation theoretic questions, we prove that if G is a finite quasi-simple group, then there exists an elementary abelian subgroup of G that intersects every conjugacy class of involutions of G.
Let $G=G(K)$ be a simple algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p>0$. A subgroup $X$ of $G$ is said to be $G$-completely reducible if, whenever it is contained in a parabolic subgroup of $G$, it is contained in a Levi subgroup of that parabolic. A subgroup $X$ of $G$ is said to be $G$-irreducible if $X$ is in no parabolic subgroup of $G$; and $G$-reducible if it is in some parabolic of $G$. In this thesis, we consider the case that $G$ is of exceptional type. When $G$ is of type $G_2$ we find all conjugacy classes of closed, connected, reductive subgr…
If $H$ is a subgroup of a compact group $G$, the probability that a random element of $H$ commutes with a random element of $G$ is denoted by $Pr(H,G)$. Let $\langle g\rangle$ stand for the monothetic subgroup generated by an element $g\in G$ and let $K$ be a subgroup of $G$. We prove that $Pr(\langle x\rangle,G)>0$ for any $x\in K$ if and only if $G$ has an open normal subgroup $T$ such that $K/C_K(T)$ is torsion. In particular, $Pr(\langle x\rangle,G)>0$ for any $x\in G$ if and only if $G$ is virtually central-by-torsion, that is, there is an open normal subgroup $T$ such that $G/Z(T)$ is to…
Let $K$ be a subgroup of a finite group $G$. The probability that an element of $G$ commutes with an element of $K$ is denoted by $Pr(K,G)$. Assume that $Pr(K,G)\geqε$ for some fixed $ε>0$. We show that there is a normal subgroup $T\leq G$ and a subgroup $B\leq K$ such that the indexes $[G:T]$ and $[K:B]$ and the order of the commutator subgroup $[T,B]$ are $ε$-bounded. This extends the well known theorem, due to P. M. Neumann, that covers the case where $K=G$. We deduce a number of corollaries of this result. A typical application is that if $K$ is the generalized Fitting subgroup $F^*(G)$ th…
We show that the pointlike and the idempotent pointlike problems are reducible with respect to natural signatures in the following cases: the pseudovariety of all finite semigroups in which the order of every subgroup is a product of elements of a fixed set of primes; the pseudovariety of all finite semigroups in which every regular J-class is the product of a rectangular band by a group from a fixed pseudovariety of groups that is reducible for the pointlike problem, respectively graph reducible. Allowing only trivial groups, we obtain omega-reducibility of the pointlike and idempotent pointl…
Let H be a reductive subgroup of a reductive group G over an algebraically closed field k. We consider the action of H on G^n, the n-fold Cartesian product of G with itself, by simultaneous conjugation. We give a purely algebraic characterization of the closed H-orbits in G^n, generalizing work of Richardson which treats the case H = G. This characterization turns out to be a natural generalization of Serre's notion of G-complete reducibility. This concept appears to be new, even in characteristic zero. We discuss how to extend some key results on G-complete reducibility in this framework. We …
Let $K$ be a reductive subgroup of a reductive group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$. The notion of relative complete reducibility, introduced in previous work of Bate-Martin-Roehrle-Tange, gives a purely algebraic description of the closed $K$-orbits in $G^n$, where $K$ acts by simultaneous conjugation on $n$-tuples of elements from $G$. This extends work of Richardson and is also a natural generalization of Serre's notion of $G$-complete reducibility. In this paper we revisit this idea, giving a characterization of relative $G$-complete reducibility which directly generalizes equi…
An automorphism $α$ of a group $G$ is called a commuting automorphism if each element $x$ in $G$ commutes with its image $α(x)$ under $α$. Let $A(G)$ denote the set of all commuting automorphisms of $G$. Rai [Proc. Japan Acad., Ser. A {\bf 91} (2015), no. 5, 57-60] has given some sufficient conditions on a finite $p$-group $G$ such that $A(G)$ is a subgroup of Aut$(G)$ and, as a consequence, has proved that in a finite $p$-group $G$ of co-class 2, where $p$ is an odd prime, $A(G)$ is a subgroup of Aut$(G)$. We give here very elementary and short proofs of main results of Rai.
The moduli space for a flat G-bundle over the two-torus is completely determined by its holonomy representation. When G is compact, connected, and simply connected, we show that the moduli space is homeomorphic to a product of two tori mod the action of the Weyl group, or equivalently to the conjugacy classes of commuting pairs of elements in G. Since the component group for a non-simply connected group is given by some finite dimensional subgroup in the centralizer of an n-tuple, we use diagram automorphisms of the extended Dynkin diagram to prove properties of centralizers of pairs of elemen…
Let $G$ be a nonabelian group. We say that $G$ has an abelian partition, if there exists a partition of $G$ into commuting subsets $A_1, A_2, \ldots, A_n$ of $G$, such that $|A_i|\geqslant 2$ for each $i=1, 2, \ldots, n$. This paper investigates problems relating to group with abelian partitions. Among other results, we show that every finite group is isomorphic to a subgroup of a group with an abelian partition and also isomorphic to a subgroup of a group with no abelian partition. We also find bounds for the minimum number of partitions for several families of groups which admit abelian part…
Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field %$k$ of characteristic $p > 0$. Our first aim in this note is to give concise and uniform proofs for two fundamental and deep results in the context of Serre's notion of $G$-complete reducibility, at the cost of less favourable bounds. Here are some special cases of these results: Suppose that the index $(H:H^\circ)$ is prime to $p$ and that $p > 2\dim V-2$ for some faithful $G$-module $V$. Then the following hold: (i) $V$ is a semisimple $H$-module if and only if $H$ is $G$-completely reducible; (ii) $…
In this paper, important concepts from finite group theory are translated to localities, in particular to linking localities. Here localities are group-like structures associated to fusion systems which were introduced by Chermak. Linking localities (by Chermak also called proper localities) are special kinds of localities which correspond to linking systems. Thus they contain the algebraic information that is needed to study $p$-completed classifying spaces of fusion systems as generalizations of $p$-completed classifying spaces of finite groups. Because of the group-like nature of localities…
Given a finite group $G$, we introduce the \textit{permutability degree} of $G$, as $$pd(G)=\frac{1}{|G| \ |\mathcal{L}(G)|} {\underset{X \in \mathcal{L}(G)}\sum}|P_G(X)|,$$ where $\mathcal{L}(G)$ is the subgroup lattice of $G$ and $P_G(X)$ the permutizer of the subgroup $X$ in $G$, that is, the subgroup generated by all cyclic subgroups of $G$ that permute with $X\in \mathcal{L}(G)$. The number $pd(G)$ allows us to find some structural restrictions on $G$. Successively, we investigate the relations between $pd(G)$, the probability of commuting subgroups $sd(G)$ of $G$ and the probability of c…
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group---possibly non-connected---over a field $k$ and let $H$ be a subgroup of $G$. If $G= GL_n$ then there is a degeneration process for obtaining from $H$ a completely reducible subgroup $H'$ of $G$; one takes a limit of $H$ along a cocharacter of $G$ in an appropriate sense. We generalise this idea to arbitrary reductive $G$ using the notion of $G$-complete reducibility and results from geometric invariant theory over non-algebraically closed fields due to the authors and Herpel. Our construction produces a $G$-completely reducible subgroup $H'$ of $G$, uniq…
Let G be a connected and reductive group over the algebraically closed field K. J-P. Serre has introduced the notion of a G-completely reducible subgroup H of G. In this note, we give a notion of G-complete reducibility -- G-cr for short -- for Lie subalgebras of Lie(G), and we show that if the closed subgroup H < G is G-cr, then Lie(H) is G-cr as well.
Let $G$ be an algebraic group. For $d\geq 1$, we define the commuting probabilities $cp_d(G) = \frac{dim(\mathfrak C_d(G))}{dim(G^d)}$, where $\mathfrak C_d(G)$ is the variety of commuting $d$-tuples in $G$. We prove that for a reductive group $G$ when $d$ is large, $cp_d(G)\sim \fracα{n}$ where $n=\dim(G)$, and $α$ is the maximal dimension of an Abelian subgroup of $G$. For a finite reductive group $G$ defined over the field $\mathbb F_q$, we show that $cp_{d+1}(G(\mathbb F_q))\sim q^{(α-n)d}$, and give several examples.
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, and assume $p$ is good for $G$. Let $P$ be a parabolic subgroup with unipotent radical $U$. For $r \ge 1$, denote by $\mathbb{G}_{a(r)}$ the $r$-th Frobenius kernel of $\mathbb{G}_a$. We prove that if the nilpotence class of $U$ is less than $p$, then any embedding of $\mathbb{G}_{a(r)}$ in $U$ lies inside a one-parameter subgroup of $U$, and there is a canonical way in which to choose such a subgroup. Applying this result, we prove that if $p$ is at least as big as the Coxeter number of $G$,…
