Let $K$ be a reductive subgroup of a reductive group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$. The notion of relative complete reducibility, introduced in previous work of Bate-Martin-Roehrle-Tange, gives a purely algebraic description of the closed $K$-orbits in $G^n$, where $K$ acts by simultaneous conjugation on $n$-tuples of elements from $G$. This extends work of Richardson and is also a natural generalization of Serre's notion of $G$-complete reducibility. In this paper we revisit this idea, giving a characterization of relative $G$-complete reducibility which directly generalizes equivalent formulations of $G$-complete reducibility. If the ambient group $G$ is a general linear group, this characterization yields representation-theoretic criteria. Along the way, we extend and generalize several results from the aforementioned work of Bate-Martin-Roehrle-Tange.
We study a relative variant of Serre's notion of $G$-complete reducibility for a reductive algebraic group $G$. We let $K$ be a reductive subgroup of $G$, and consider subgroups of $G$ which normalise the identity component $K^{\circ}$. We show that such a subgroup is relatively $G$-completely reducible with respect to $K$ if and only if its image in the automorphism group of $K^{\circ}$ is completely reducible. This allows us to generalise a number of fundamental results from the absolute to the relative setting. We also derive analogous results for Lie subalgebras of the Lie algebra of $G$, …
In this note, we unify and extend various concepts in the area of $G$-complete reducibility, where $G$ is a reductive algebraic group. By results of Serre and Bate--Martin--Röhrle, the usual notion of $G$-complete reducibility can be re-framed as a property of an action of a group on the spherical building of the identity component of $G$. We show that other variations of this notion, such as relative complete reducibility and $σ$-complete reducibility, can also be viewed as special cases of this building-theoretic definition, and hence a number of results from these areas are special cases of…
The notion of a \emph{$G$-completely reducible} subgroup is important in the study of algebraic groups and their subgroup structure. It generalizes the usual idea of complete reducibility from representation theory: a subgroup $H$ of a general linear group $G= {\rm GL}_n(k)$ is $G$-completely reducible if and only if the inclusion map $i\colon H\rightarrow {\rm GL}_n(k)$ is a completely reducible representation of $H$. In these notes I give an introduction to the theory of complete reducibility and its applications, and explain an approach to the subject using geometric invariant theory.
Let $k$ be a nonperfect separably closed field. Let $G$ be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over $k$. We study rationality problems for Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of $G$. In particular, we present the first example of a connected nonabelian $k$-subgroup $H$ of $G$ that is $G$-completely reducible but not $G$-completely reducible over $k$, and the first example of a connected nonabelian $k$-subgroup $H'$ of $G$ that is $G$-completely reducible over $k$ but not $G$-completely reducible. This is new: all previously known such examples are for finite (or non-…
Let $k$ be a nonperfect separably closed field. Let $G$ be a (possibly non-connected) reductive group defined over $k$. We study rationality problems for Serre's notion of complete reducibility of subgroups of $G$. In our previous work, we constructed examples of subgroups $H$ of $G$ that are $G$-completely reducible but not $G$-completely reducible over $k$ (and vice versa). In this paper, we give a theoretical underpinning of those constructions. To illustrate our result, we present a new such example in a non-connected reductive group of type $D_4$ in characteristic $2$. Then using Geometri…

We prove that the Borel space of torsion-free Abelian groups with domain $ω$ is Borel complete, i.e., the isomorphism relation on this Borel space is as complicated as possible, as an isomorphism relation. This solves a long-standing open problem in descriptive set theory, which dates back to the seminal paper on Borel reducibility of Friedman and Stanley from 1989.
Diagrammatic reducibility DR and its generalization vertex asphericity VA are combinatorial tools developed for detecting asphericity of a 2-complex. Here we present tests for a relative version of VA that apply to pairs of 2-complexes $(L,K)$, where $K$ is a subcomplex of $L$. We show that a relative weight test holds for injective labeled oriented trees, implying that they are VA and hence aspherical. This strengthens a result obtained by the authors in 2017 and simplifies the original proof.
