For a group $H$ and a non empty subset $Γ\subseteq H$, the commuting graph $G=\mathcal{C}(H,Γ)$ is the graph with $Γ$ as the node set and where any $x,y \in Γ$ are joined by an edge if $x$ and $y$ commute in $H$. We prove that any simple graph can be obtained as a commuting graph of a Coxeter group, solving the realizability problem in this setup. In particular we can recover every Dynkin diagram of ADE type as a commuting graph. Thanks to the relation between the ADE classification and finite subgroups of $\SL(2,\C)$, we are able to rephrase results from the {\em McKay correspondence} in terms of generators of the corresponding Coxeter groups. We finish the paper studying commuting graphs $\mathcal{C}(H,Γ)$ for every finite subgroup $H\subset\SL(2,\C)$ for different subsets $Γ\subseteq H$, and investigating metric properties of them when $Γ=H$.
Let D be a connected graph. The Dynkin complex CD(A) of a D-algebra A was introduced by the second author in [TL2] to control the deformations of quasi-Coxeter algebra structures on A. In the present paper, we study the cohomology of this complex when A is the group algebra of a Coxeter group W and D is the Dynkin diagram of W. We compute this cohomology when W is finite and prove in particular the rigidity of quasi-Coxeter algebra structures on kW. For an arbitrary W, we compute the top cohomology group and obtain a number of additional partial results when W is affine. Our computations are c…
Commuting involution graphs have been studied for finite Coxeter groups and for affine groups of classical type. The purpose of this short note is to establish some general results for commuting involution graphs in affine Coxeter groups, and to deal with types $\tilde F_4$ and $\tilde G_2$. Types $\tilde E_6$ $\tilde E_7$ and $\tilde E_8$ are more substantial and we will address these in a forthcoming paper.
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain ``amplitudes'' assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. This game has been studied previously by Proctor, Mozes, Bjorner, Eriksson, and Wildberger. We show that those connected such graphs for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. As a cons…
Based on the third author's thesis in this article we complete the local recognition of commuting reflection graphs of spherical Coxeter groups arising from irreducible crystallographic root systems.
We describe the components of the moduli space of conjugacy classes of commuting pairs and triples of elements in a compact Lie group. This description is in terms of the extended Dynkin diagram of the simply connected cover, together with the coroot integers and the action of the fundamental group. In the case of three commuting elements, we compute Chern-Simons invariants associated to the corresponding flat bundles over the three-torus, and verify a conjecture of Witten which reveals a surprising symmetry involving the Chern-Simons invariants and the dimensions of the components of the modu…
In a recent paper, Barot and Marsh presented an explicit construction of presentation of a finite Weyl group by any seed of corresponding cluster algebra, i.e. by any diagram mutation-equivalent to an orientation of a Dynkin diagram with given Weyl group. Extending their construction to the affine case, we obtain presentations for all affine Coxeter groups. Furthermore, we generalize the construction to the settings of diagrams arising from unpunctured triangulated surfaces and orbifolds, which leads to presentations of corresponding groups as quotients of numerous distinct Coxeter groups.
Each quiver appearing in a seed of a cluster algebra determines a corresponding group, which we call a cluster group, which is defined via a presentation. Grant and Marsh showed that, for quivers appearing in seeds of cluster algebras of finite type, the associated cluster groups are isomorphic to finite reflection groups. As for finite Coxeter groups, we can consider parabolic subgroups of cluster groups. We prove that, in the type $A_{n}$ case, there exists an isomorphism between the lattice of subsets of the defining generators of the cluster group and the lattice of its parabolic subgroups…
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain ``amplitudes'' assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. This game and its interactions with Coxeter/Weyl group theory and Lie theory have been studied by many authors. In particular, Eriksson connects certain geometric representations of Coxeter groups with games on graphs with certain real number amplitudes. Games played on such graphs are ``E-games.'' Here we in…
An element of a Coxeter group $W$ is called fully commutative if any two of its reduced decompositions can be related by a series of transpositions of adjacent commuting generators. In the preprint "Fully commutative elements in finite and affine Coxeter groups" (arXiv:1402.2166), R. Biagioli and the authors proved among other things that, for each irreducible affine Coxeter group, the sequence counting fully commutative elements with respect to length is ultimately periodic. In the present work, we study this sequence in its periodic part for each of these groups, and in particular we determi…
The moduli space for a flat G-bundle over the two-torus is completely determined by its holonomy representation. When G is compact, connected, and simply connected, we show that the moduli space is homeomorphic to a product of two tori mod the action of the Weyl group, or equivalently to the conjugacy classes of commuting pairs of elements in G. Since the component group for a non-simply connected group is given by some finite dimensional subgroup in the centralizer of an n-tuple, we use diagram automorphisms of the extended Dynkin diagram to prove properties of centralizers of pairs of elemen…
A right-angled Coxeter group is a group with a given set of generators of order two, subject only to the relations that certain pairs of the generators commute. Various papers have shown how homological properties of the Coxeter group are related to homological properties of the simplicial complex whose simplices are the sets of commuting generators. Using these techniques, we construct torsion-free groups which are Poincare duality groups over some rings but not over others, and a group whose integral cohomological dimension is finite but strictly greater than its cohomological dimension over…
An element of a Coxeter group W is fully commutative if any two of its reduced decompositions are related by a series of transpositions of adjacent commuting generators. An element of a Coxeter group W is cyclically fully commutative if any of its cyclic shifts remains fully commutative. These elements were studied in Boothby et al.. In particular the authors enumerated cyclically fully commutative elements in all Coxeter groups having a finite number of them. In this work we characterize and enumerate cyclically fully commutative elements according to their Coxeter length in all finite or aff…
In this paper, we show that affine extensions of non-crystallographic Coxeter groups can be derived via Coxeter-Dynkin diagram foldings and projections of affine extended versions of the root systems E_8, D_6 and A_4. We show that the induced affine extensions of the non-crystallographic groups H_4, H_3 and H_2 correspond to a distinguished subset of the Kac-Moody-type extensions considered in Dechant et al. This class of extensions was motivated by physical applications in icosahedral systems in biology (viruses), physics (quasicrystals) and chemistry (fullerenes). By connecting these here to…
The limit weak order on an affine Weyl group was introduced by Lam and Pylyavskyy in their study of total positivity for loop groups. They showed that in the case of the affine symmetric group the minimal elements of this poset coincide with the infinite fully commutative reduced words and with infinite powers of Coxeter elements. We answer several open problems raised there by classifying minimal elements in all affine types and relating these elements to the classes of fully commutative and Coxeter elements. Interestingly, the infinite fully commutative elements correspond to the minuscule a…
In this article we study a second example of the phenomenon studied in "Complex Lorentzian Leech lattice and bimonster".(Arxiv. math.GR/0508228). The results and methods of proof are similar. We find 14 roots in the automorphism group of the the quaternionic Lorentzian Leech lattice L that form the Coxeter diagram D given by the incidence graph of projective plane over finite field of order 2. We prove that the reflections in these 14 roots generate the automorphism group of L. We find evidence that these reflections behave like the simple roots and the vector fixed by the diagram automorphism…
We situate the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group within the context of the representation theory of quivers. We describe Reading's bijection between noncrossing partitions and clusters in this context, and show that it extends to the extended Dynkin case. Our setup also yields a new proof that the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group form a lattice. We also prove some new results within the theory of quiver representations. We show that the finitely generated, exact abelian, and extension-closed subcategories of the representations of a quiver $…
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$, and assume $p$ is good for $G$. Let $P$ be a parabolic subgroup with unipotent radical $U$. For $r \ge 1$, denote by $\mathbb{G}_{a(r)}$ the $r$-th Frobenius kernel of $\mathbb{G}_a$. We prove that if the nilpotence class of $U$ is less than $p$, then any embedding of $\mathbb{G}_{a(r)}$ in $U$ lies inside a one-parameter subgroup of $U$, and there is a canonical way in which to choose such a subgroup. Applying this result, we prove that if $p$ is at least as big as the Coxeter number of $G$,…
In various classes of infinite groups, we identify groups that are presentable by products, i.e. groups having finite index subgroups which are quotients of products of two commuting infinite subgroups. The classes we discuss here include groups of small virtual cohomological dimension and irreducible Zariski dense subgroups of appropriate algebraic groups. This leads to applications to groups of positive deficiency, to fundamental groups of three-manifolds and to Coxeter groups. For finitely generated groups presentable by products we discuss the problem of whether the factors in a presentati…
Given a finite crystallographic root system $Φ$ whose Dynkin diagram has a non-trivial automorphism, it yields a new root system $Φ_τ$ by a so-called classical folding. On the other hand, Lusztig's folding (1983) folds the root system of type $E_8$ to $H_4$ starting from an automorphism of the root lattice of type $E_8.$ The notion of a twisted quadratic folding of a root system was introduced by Lanini-Zainoulline (2018) to describe both the classical foldings and Lusztig's folding on the same footing. The structure algebra $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{G})$ of the moment graph $\mathcal{G}$ associat…
We consider the pure supersymmetric Yang--Mills theories placed on a small 3-dimensional spatial torus with higher orthogonal and exceptional gauge groups. The problem of constructing the quantum vacuum states is reduced to a pure mathematical problem of classifying the flat connections on 3-torus. The latter problem is equivalent to the problem of classification of commuting triples of elements in a connected simply connected compact Lie group which is solved in this paper. In particular, we show that for higher orthogonal SO(N), N > 6, and for all exceptional groups the moduli space of flat …
