Almost commuting elements in compact Lie groups

We describe the components of the moduli space of conjugacy classes of commuting pairs and triples of elements in a compact Lie group. This description is in terms of the extended Dynkin diagram of the simply connected cover, together with the coroot integers and the action of the fundamental group. In the case of three commuting elements, we compute Chern-Simons invariants associated to the corresponding flat bundles over the three-torus, and verify a conjecture of Witten which reveals a surprising symmetry involving the Chern-Simons invariants and the dimensions of the components of the moduli space.

Almost commuting permutations are near commuting permutations

We prove that the commutator is stable in permutations endowed with the Hamming distance, that is, two permutations that almost commute are near two commuting permutations. Our result extends to $k$-tuples of almost commuting permutations, for any given $k$, and allows restrictions, for instance, to even permutations.

Stable splittings, spaces of representations and almost commuting elements in Lie groups

In this paper the space of almost commuting elements in a Lie group is studied through a homotopical point of view. In particular a stable splitting after one suspension is derived for these spaces and their quotients under conjugation. A complete description for the stable factors appearing in this splitting is provided for compact connected Lie groups of rank one.By using symmetric products, the colimits $\Rep(\Z^n, SU)$, $\Rep(\Z^n,U)$ and $\Rep(\Z^n, Sp)$ are explicitly described as finite products of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces.

Almost commuting matrices and stability for product groups

We prove that any product of two non-abelian free groups, $Γ=\mathbb F_m\times\mathbb F_k$, for $m,k\geq 2$, is not Hilbert-Schmidt stable. This means that there exist asymptotic representations $π_n:Γ\rightarrow \text{U}({d_n})$ with respect to the normalized Hilbert-Schmidt norm which are not close to actual representations. Centralizers of Commuting Elements in Compact Lie Groups

The moduli space for a flat G-bundle over the two-torus is completely determined by its holonomy representation. Rigidity of commuting affine actions on reflexive Banach spaces

We give a simple argument to show that if α is an affine isometric action of a product G x H of topological groups on a reflexive Banach space X with linear part π, then either π(H) fixes a unit vector or α|G almost fixes a point on X. Exponentiation of commuting nilpotent varieties

Let $H$ be a linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$. Commuting elements, simplicial spaces, and filtrations of classifying spaces

Using spaces of homomorphisms and the descending central series of the free groups, simplicial spaces are constructed for each integer q>1 and every topological group G, with realizations B(q,G) that filter the classifying space BG. In particular for q=2 this yields a single space B(2,G) assembled from all the n-tuples of commuting elements in G. Homotopy properties of the B(q,G) are considered for finite groups. Cohomology calculations are provided for compact Lie groups. The spaces B(2,G) are described in detail for transitively commutative groups.

Jordanable almost Abelian Lie algebras

We call a linear operator on a vector space over a field Jordanable if it has a Jordan canonical form. An almost Abelian Lie algebra has only one non-vanishing Lie bracket, which is given by a linear operator. If the latter is Jordanable then we call the almost Abelian Lie algebra Jordanable. The existence of canonical form allows to describe important structural properties of these Lie algebras in explicit terms. Lie subalgebras, ideals, automorphisms and derivations, as well as quadratic Casimir elements are given in explicitly in a suitable basis.
