Suppose 2n voters vote sequentially for one of two candidates. For how many such sequences does one candidate have strictly more votes than the other at each stage of the voting? The answer is \binom{2n}{n} and, while easy enough to prove using generating functions, for example, only two combinatorial proofs exist, due to Kleitman and Gessel. In this paper we present two new (far simpler) bijective proofs.
A bijection between ternary trees with $n$ nodes and a subclass of Motzkin paths of length $3n$ is given. This bijection can then be generalized to $t$-ary trees.
A bijection is constructed between two sets of height restricted lattice paths by means of translating them in two tree classe, namely plane trees and Elena trees. An old bijection between them can be used now for that actual problem.
This short note gives a bijection between quarter plane walks using the steps $\{\rightarrow, \searrow, \downarrow, \leftarrow, \nwarrow, \uparrow\}$ and bicoloured Motzkin paths.
Kim and Drake used generating functions to prove that the number of 2-distant noncrossing matchings, which are in bijection with little Schroeder paths, is the same as the weight of Dyck paths in which downsteps from even height have weight 2. This work presents bijections from those Dyck paths to little Schroeder paths, and from a similar set of Dyck paths to big Schroeder paths. We show the effect of these bijections on the corresponding matchings, find generating functions for two new classes of lattice paths, and demonstrate a relationship with 231-avoiding permutations.
It is known that both the number of Dyck paths with $2n$ steps and $k$ peaks, and the number of Dyck paths with $2n$ steps and $k$ steps at odd height follow the Narayana distribution. In this paper we present a bijection which explicitly illustrates this equinumeracy. Moreover, we extend this bijection to bilateral Dyck paths. The restriction to Dyck paths preserves the number of contacts.
Here we give two bijections, one to show that the number of UUU-free Dyck n-paths is the Motzkin number M_n, the other to obtain the (known) distributions of the parameters "number of UDUs" and "number of DDUs" on Dyck n-paths. The first bijection is straightforward, the second not quite so obvious.
We exhibit a bijection between central Delannoy $n$-paths, that is, lattice paths from the origin to $(n,n)$ with steps $E=(1,0), \,N=(0,1),\,D=(1,1)$ and the lattice paths from the origin to $(n+1,n)$ where the only restriction on the steps is that they have finite nonnegative slope.
We find a bijection between bi-banded paths and peak-counting paths, applying to two classes of lattice paths including Dyck paths. Thus we find a new interpretation of Narayana numbers as coefficients of weight polynomials enumerating bi-banded Dyck paths, which class of paths has arisen naturally in previous literature in a solution of the stationary state of the `TASEP' stochastic process.
In this paper we introduce a new bijection from the set of Dyck paths to itself. This bijection has the property that it maps statistics that appeared recently in the study of pattern-avoiding permutations into classical statistics on Dyck paths, whose distribution is easy to obtain. We also present a generalization of the bijection, as well as several applications of it to enumeration problems of statistics in restricted permutations.
Two subfamilies of Motzkin paths, with the same numbers of up, down, horizontal steps were known to be equinumerous with ternary trees and related objects. We construct a bijection between these two families that does not use any auxiliary objects, like ternary trees.
We give several bijections among restricted Motzkin paths, explaining why various parameters on these paths are equidistributed. For example, the number of doublerise-free Motzkin paths of length n is the same as the number of peak-free Motzkin paths of length n+1 and the parameter "number of doublefalls" has the same distribution on the former set as "number of valleys" does on the latter. The bijections are most easily presented recursively but we also give explicit descriptions using the notion of Motzkin tree.
We present a new bijection between variants of $m$-Dyck paths (paths with steps in $\{+1,-m\}$ starting and ending at height $0$ and remaining at non-negative height), which generalizes a classical bijection between Dyck prefixes and pointed Łukasiewicz paths. As an application, we present a new random sampling procedure for $m$-Dyck paths with a linear time complexity and using a quasi-optimal number of random bits. This outperforms Devroye's algorithm, which uses $\mathcal O(n\log n)$ random bits.
Dyck paths (also balanced brackets and Dyck words) are among the most heavily studied Catalan families. This paper is a continuation of [2, 3]. In the paper we enumerate the terms of the OEIS A036991, Dyck numbers, and construct a concomitant bijection with symmetric Dyck paths. In the case of binary coding of Dyck paths we work with compact natural numbers after removing leading zeros. Analysis of binary suffixes, allowed us to obtain a bijection between arbitrary A036991 terms and symmetric A036991 terms which encode symmetric Dyck paths. The bijection generates a forest of unary non-interse…
We present three bijections, the first between little Schröder paths and a class of growth-constrained integer sequences, the second between lattice paths consisting of steps with nonnegative slope and another class of growth-constrained sequences, the third between a class of lattice paths with steps $(1,1)$ and $(1,-j\,),\ j\ge 1$, and a class with steps $(k,1),\ k\ge 1$, and $(1,-1)$.
We construct a bijection between 231-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths that sends the sum of the major index and the inverse major index of a 231-avoiding permutation to the major index of the corresponding Dyck path. Furthermore, we relate this bijection to others and exhibit a bistatistic on 231-avoiding permutations which is related to the q,t-Catalan numbers.
We show bijectively that Dyck paths with all peaks at odd height are counted by the Motzkin numbers and Dyck paths with all peaks at even height are counted by the Riordan numbers.
We prove a recent conjecture by René Marczinzik involving certain statistics on Dyck paths that originate in the representation theory of Nakayama algebras of a linearly oriented quiver. We do so by analysing the effect of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley bijection between Dyck paths and 321-avoiding permutations on these statistics, which was suggested by the result of a query issued to the online database FindStat.
The known bijections on Dyck paths are either involutions or have notoriously intractable cycle structure. Here we present a size-preserving bijection on Dyck paths whose cycle structure is amenable to complete analysis. In particular, each cycle has length a power of 2. A new manifestation of the Catalan numbers as labeled forests crops up enroute as does the Pascal matrix mod 2. We use the bijection to show the equivalence of two known manifestations of the Motzkin numbers. Finally, we consider some statistics on the new Catalan manifestation.
We give a bijective proof of a conjecture of Regev and Vershik on the equality of two multisets of hook numbers of certain skew-Young diagrams. The bijection proves a result that is stronger and more symmetric than the original conjecture, by means of a construction involving Dyck paths, a particular type of lattice path.
A k-triangulation of a convex polygon is a maximal set of diagonals so that no k+1 of them mutually cross in their interiors. We present a bijection between 2-triangulations of a convex n-gon and pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths of length 2(n-4). This solves the problem of finding a bijective proof of a result of Jonsson for the case k=2. We obtain the bijection by constructing isomorphic generating trees for the sets of 2-triangulations and pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths.
We find bijections on 2-distant noncrossing partitions, 12312-avoiding partitions, 3-Motzkin paths, UH-free Schr{ö}der paths and Schr{ö}der paths without peaks at even height. We also give a direct bijection between 2-distant noncrossing partitions and 12312-avoiding partitions.
In \cite{BaDeFePi96} the concept of nondecreasing Dyck paths was introduced. We continue this research by looking at it from the point of view of words, rational languages, planted plane trees, and continued fractions. We construct a bijection with planted plane trees of height $\le 4$ and compute various statistics on trees that are the equivalents of nondecreasing Dyck paths.
We give a bijection between partially directed paths in the symmetric wedge y= +/-x and matchings, which sends north steps to nestings. This gives a bijective proof of a result of Prellberg et al. that was first discovered through the corresponding generating functions: the number of partially directed paths starting at the origin confined to the symmetric wedge y= +/-x with k north steps is equal to the number of matchings on [2n] with k nestings.
An $n$-multiset of $[k]=\{1,2,\ldots, k\}$ consists of a set of $n$ elements from $[k]$ where each element can be repeated. We present the bivariate generating function for $n$-multisets of $[k]$ with no consecutive elements. For $n=k$, these multisets have the same enumeration as directed animals in the square lattice. Then we give constructive bijections between directed animals, multisets with no consecutive elements and Grand-Dyck paths avoiding the pattern $DUD$, and we show how classical and novel statistics are transported by these bijections.
Bargraphs are a special class of convex polyominoes. They can be identified with lattice paths with unit steps north, east, and south that start at the origin, end on the $x$-axis, and stay strictly above the $x$-axis everywhere except at the endpoints. Bargraphs, which are used to represent histograms and to model polymers in statistical physics, have been enumerated in the literature by semiperimeter and by several other statistics, using different methods such as the wasp-waist decomposition of Bousquet-Mélou and Rechnitzer, and a bijection with certain Motzkin paths. In this paper we descr…
There are (at least) three bijections from Dyck paths to 321-avoiding permutations in the literature, due to Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, Krattenthaler, and Mansour-Deng-Du. How different are they? Denoting them B,K,M respectively, we show that M = B \circ L = K \circ L' where L is the classical Kreweras-Lalanne involution on Dyck paths and L', also an involution, is a sort of derivative of L. Thus K^{-1} \circ B, a measure of the difference between B and K, is the product of involutions L' \circ L and turns out to be a very curious bijection: as a permutation on Dyck n-paths it is an nth root of …
In this note we observe that a bijection related to Littelmann's root operators (for type $A_1$) transparently explains the well known enumeration by length of walks on $\N$ (left factors of Dyck paths), as well as some other enumerative coincidences. We indicate a relation with bijective solutions of Bertrand's ballot problem: those can be mechanically transformed into bijective proofs of the mentioned enumeration formula.
We introduce a new concept of permutation avoidance pattern called hatted pattern, which is a natural generalization of the barred pattern. We show the growth rate of the class of permutations avoiding a hatted pattern in comparison to barred pattern. We prove that Dyck paths with no peak at height $p$, Dyck paths with no $ud... du$ and Motzkin paths are counted by hatted pattern avoiding permutations in $\s_n(132)$ by showing explicit bijections. As a result, a new direct bijection between Motzkin paths and permutations in $\s_n(132)$ without two consecutive adjacent numbers is given. These p…
We solve two problems regarding the enumeration of lattice paths in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with steps $(1,1)$ and $(1,-1)$ with respect to the major index, defined as the sum of the positions of the valleys, and to the number of certain crossings. The first problem considers crossings of a single path with a fixed horizontal line. The second one counts pairs of paths with respect to the number of times they cross each other. Our proofs introduce lattice path bijections with convenient visual descriptions, and the answers are given by remarkably simple formulas involving $q$-binomial coefficients.
The Stanley lattice, Tamari lattice and Kreweras lattice are three remarkable orders defined on the set of Catalan objects of a given size. These lattices are ordered by inclusion: the Stanley lattice is an extension of the Tamari lattice which is an extension of the Kreweras lattice. The Stanley order can be defined on the set of Dyck paths of size $n$ as the relation of \emph{being above}. Hence, intervals in the Stanley lattice are pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths. In a former article, the second author defined a bijection $Φ$ between pairs of non-crossing Dyck paths and the realizers of tr…
In this note, we present constructive bijections from Dyck and Motzkin meanders with catastrophes to Dyck paths avoiding some patterns. As a byproduct, we deduce correspondences from Dyck and Motzkin excursions to restricted Dyck paths.
There is a bijection from Schroder paths to {4132, 4231}-avoiding permutations due to Bandlow, Egge, and Killpatrick that sends "area" to "inversion number". Here we give a concise description of this bijection.
Motivated by the relation holding for the m-generalized Catalan numbers of type A and C, the connection between dominant regions of the m-Shi arrangement of type A and C is investigated. In the same line of thought, a bijection between mn+1 copies of each m-Dyck path of height n and the set of NE lattice paths inside an n times mn rectangle is provided.
We present nine bijections between classes of Dyck paths and classes of standard Young tableaux (SYT). In particular, we consider SYT of flag and rectangular shapes, we give Dyck path descriptions for certain SYT of height at most 3, and we introduce a special class of labeled Dyck paths of semilength $n$ that is shown to be in bijection with the set of all SYT with $n$ boxes. In addition, we present bijections from certain classes of Motzkin paths to SYT. As a natural framework for some of our bijections, we introduce a class of set partitions which in some sense is dual to the known class of…
We show that sequences A026737 and A111279 in The On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences are the same by giving a bijection between two classes of Grand Schroder paths.
A well-labelled positive path of size n is a pair (p,σ) made of a word p=p_1p_2...p_{n-1} on the alphabet {-1, 0,+1} such that the sum of the letters of any prefix is non-negative, together with a permutation σof {1,2,...,n} such that p_i=-1 implies σ(i)<σ(i+1), while p_i=1 implies σ(i)>σ(i+1). We establish a bijection between well-labelled positive paths of size $n$ and matchings (i.e. fixed-point free involutions) on {1,2,...,2n}. This proves that the number of well-labelled positive paths is (2n-1)!!. By specialising our bijection, we also prove that the number of permutations of size n suc…
We show how a bijection due to Biane between involutions and labelled Motzkin paths yields bijections between Motzkin paths and two families of restricted involutions that are counted by Motzkin numbers, namely, involutions avoiding 4321 and 3412. As a consequence, we derive characterizations of Motzkin paths corresponding to involutions avoiding either 4321 or 3412 together with any pattern of length 3. Furthermore, we exploit the described bijection to study some notable subsets of the set of restricted involutions, namely, fixed point free and centrosymmetric restricted involutions.
This paper solves an open question of Mortimer and Prellberg asking for an explicit bijection between two families of walks. The first family is formed by what we name triangular walks, which are two-dimensional walks moving in six directions (0°, 60°, 120°, 180°, 240°, 300°) and confined within a triangle. The other family is comprised of two-colored Motzkin paths with bounded height, in which the horizontal steps may be forbidden at maximal height. We provide several new bijections. The first one is derived from a simple inductive proof, taking advantage of a $2^n$-to-one function from gener…
There is a natural bijection between Dyck paths and basis diagrams of the Temperley-Lieb algebra defined via tiling. Overhang paths are certain generalisations of Dyck paths allowing more general steps but restricted to a rectangle in the two-dimensional integer lattice. We show that there is a natural bijection, extending the above tiling construction, between overhang paths and basis diagrams of the Brauer algebra.
Three-dimensional Catalan numbers are a variant of the classical (bidimensional) Catalan numbers, that count, among other interesting objects, the standard Young tableaux of shape (n,n,n). In this paper, we present a structural bijection between two three-dimensional Catalan objects: 1234-avoiding up-down permutations, and a class of weighted Dyck paths.
A generalized Motzkin path, called G-Motzkin path for short, of length $n$ is a lattice path from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, 0)$ in the first quadrant of the XOY-plane that consists of up steps $\mathbf{u}=(1, 1)$, down steps $\mathbf{d}=(1, -1)$, horizontal steps $\mathbf{h}=(1, 0)$ and vertical steps $\mathbf{v}=(0, -1)$. An $(a,b,c)$-G-Motzkin path is a weighted G-Motzkin path such that the $\mathbf{u}$-steps, $\mathbf{h}$-steps, $\mathbf{v}$-steps and $\mathbf{d}$-steps are weighted respectively by $1, a, b$ and $c$. Let $τ$ be a word on $\{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{d}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$, denoted …
In this paper, we construct a bijection from a set of bounded free Motzkin paths to a set of bounded Motzkin prefixes that induces a bijection from a set of bounded free Dyck paths to a set of bounded Dyck prefixes. We also give bijections between a set of bounded cornerless Motzkin paths and a set of $t$-core partitions, and a set of bounded cornerless symmetric Motzkin paths and a set of self-conjugate $t$-core partitions. As an application, we get explicit formulas for the number of ordinary and self-conjugate $t$-core partitions with a fixed number of corners.
This paper contains a partial answer to the open problem 3.11 of \cite{[H2008]}. That is to find an explicit bijection on Schröder paths that inverts the statistics area and bounce. This paper started as an attempt to write the sum over $m$-Schröder paths with a fix number of diagonal steps into Schur functions in the variables $q$ and $t$. Some results have been generalized to parking functions, and some bijections were made with standard Young tableaux giving way to partial combinatorial formulas in the basis $s_μ(q,t)s_λ(X)$ for $\nabla(e_n)$ (respectively, $\nabla^m(e_n)$), when $μ$ and $λ…
In this paper we introduce abstract string modules and give an explicit bijection between the submodule lattice of an abstract string module and the perfect matching lattice of the corresponding abstract snake graph. In particular, we make explicit the direct correspondence between a submodule of a string module and the perfect matching of the corresponding snake graph. For every string module, we define a Coxeter element in a symmetric group, and we establish a bijection between these lattices and the interval in the weak Bruhat order determined by the Coxeter element. Using the correspondenc…
We exhibit a bijection between 132-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths. Using this bijection, it is shown that all the recently discovered results on generating functions for 132-avoiding permutations with a given number of occurrences of the pattern $12... k$ follow directly from old results on the enumeration of Motzkin paths, among which is a continued fraction result due to Flajolet. As a bonus, we use these observations to derive further results and a precise asymptotic estimate for the number of 132-avoiding permutations of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ with exactly $r$ occurrences of the pattern $12…
In this paper, we first give bijections between the set of $\mathbf{uvu}$-avoiding …
The Springer numbers are defined in connection with the irreducible root systems of type $B_n$, which also arise as the generalized Euler and class numbers introduced by Shanks. Combinatorial interpretations of the Springer numbers have been found by Purtill in terms of Andre signed permutations, and by Arnol'd in terms of snakes of type $B_n$. We introduce the inversion code of a snake of type $B_n$ and establish a bijection between labeled ballot paths of length n and snakes of type $B_n$. Moreover, we obtain the bivariate generating function for the number B(n,k) of labeled ballot paths sta…
We present a substantial generalization of the equinumeracy of grand Dyck paths and Dyck-path prefixes, constrained within a band. The number of constrained paths starting at level $i$ and ending in a window of size $2j+2$ is equal to the number starting at level $j$ and ending in a window of size $2i+2$ centered around the same point. A new encoding of lattice paths provides a bijective proof.
It is known that for the 2n-step symmetric simple random walk on Z, two events have the same probability if and only if their sets of paths have the same cardinality. In this article, we construct two kinds of bijections between sets of paths with the same cardinality. The construction is natural and simple. It can be easily realized through programming. More importantly, this construction opens a door to prove that two events in the 2n-step symmetric simple random walk on Z have the same probability and some further related results.
