We exhibit a bijection between 132-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths. Using this bijection, it is shown that all the recently discovered results on generating functions for 132-avoiding permutations with a given number of occurrences of the pattern $12... k$ follow directly from old results on the enumeration of Motzkin paths, among which is a continued fraction result due to Flajolet. As a bonus, we use these observations to derive further results and a precise asymptotic estimate for the number of 132-avoiding permutations of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ with exactly $r$ occurrences of the pattern $12... k$. Second, we exhibit a bijection between 123-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths. When combined with a result of Roblet and Viennot, this bijection allows us to express the generating function for 123-avoiding permutations with a given number of occurrences of the pattern $(k-1)(k-2)... 1k$ in form of a continued fraction and to derive further results for these permutations.
We give some interpretations to certain integer sequences in terms of parameters on Grand-Dyck paths and coloured noncrossing partitions, and we find some new bijections relating Grand-Dyck paths and signed pattern avoiding permutations. Next we transfer a natural distributive lattice structure on Grand-Dyck paths to coloured noncrossing partitions and signed pattern avoiding permutations, thus showing, in particular, that it is isomorphic to the structure induced by the (strong) Bruhat order on a certain set of signed pattern avoiding permutations.
We construct a bijection between 231-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths that sends the sum of the major index and the inverse major index of a 231-avoiding permutation to the major index of the corresponding Dyck path. Furthermore, we relate this bijection to others and exhibit a bistatistic on 231-avoiding permutations which is related to the q,t-Catalan numbers.
In this paper we study a mapping from permutations to Dyck paths. A Dyck path gives rise to a (Young) diagram and we give relationships between statistics on permutations and statistics on their corresponding diagrams. The distribution of the size of this diagram is discussed and a generalisation given of a parity result due to Simion and Schmidt. We propose a filling of the diagram which determines the permutation uniquely. Diagram containment on a restricted class of permutations is shown to be related to the strong Bruhat poset.
We define a map $ν$ between the symmetric group $S_n$ and the set of pairs of Dyck paths of semilength $n$. We show that the map $ν$ is injective when restricted to the set of 1234-avoiding permutations and characterize the image of this map.

In 2003, Deutsch and Elizalde defined a family of bijective maps between the set of Dyck paths to itself which is induced by some particular permutations. In this paper, we extend the construction of the maps by allowing the permutation to be arbitrary. We characterise the permutations which generate the same map and find all permutations generating a bijection among Dyck paths. Consequently, we give a new combinatorial interpretation of the quantity $(2n-1)!!$ as well as some new statistics of Dyck paths which are equidistributed to some known height statistics via our generalised maps.
We introduce a new concept of permutation avoidance pattern called hatted pattern, which is a natural generalization of the barred pattern. We show the growth rate of the class of permutations avoiding a hatted pattern in comparison to barred pattern. We prove that Dyck paths with no peak at height $p$, Dyck paths with no $ud... du$ and Motzkin paths are counted by hatted pattern avoiding permutations in $\s_n(132)$ by showing explicit bijections. As a result, a new direct bijection between Motzkin paths and permutations in $\s_n(132)$ without two consecutive adjacent numbers is given. These p…
We complete the enumeration of Dumont permutations of the second kind avoiding a pattern of length 4 which is itself a Dumont permutation of the second kind. We also consider some combinatorial statistics on Dumont permutations avoiding certain patterns of length 3 and 4 and give a natural bijection between 3142-avoiding Dumont permutations of the second kind and noncrossing partitions that uses cycle decomposition, as well as bijections between 132-, 231- and 321-avoiding Dumont permutations and Dyck paths. Finally, we enumerate Dumont permutations of the first kind simultaneously avoiding ce…
There are (at least) three bijections from Dyck paths to 321-avoiding permutations in the literature, due to Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, Krattenthaler, and Mansour-Deng-Du. How different are they? Denoting them B,K,M respectively, we show that M = B \circ L = K \circ L' where L is the classical Kreweras-Lalanne involution on Dyck paths and L', also an involution, is a sort of derivative of L. Thus K^{-1} \circ B, a measure of the difference between B and K, is the product of involutions L' \circ L and turns out to be a very curious bijection: as a permutation on Dyck n-paths it is an nth root of …
Hypermaps were introduced as an algebraic tool for the representation of embeddings of graphs on an orientable surface. Recently a bijection was given between hypermaps and indecomposable permutations; this sheds new light on the subject by connecting a hypermap to a simpler object. In this paper, a bijection between indecomposable permutations and labelled Dyck paths is proposed, from which a few enumerative results concerning hypermaps and maps follow. We obtain for instance an inductive formula for the number of hypermaps with n darts, p vertices and q hyper-edges; the latter is also the nu…
We show connection between Dyck paths with peaks of bounded height and random walks. The correspondence between a certain class of random walks and such Dyck paths allows us to develop a probabilistic perspective on Chebyshev polynomials.
The number of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ is famously $C_n$, the $n$th Catalan number. This fact follows after noticing that every Dyck path can be uniquely parsed according to a context-free grammar. In a recent paper, Zeilberger showed that many restricted sets of Dyck paths satisfy different, more complicated grammars, and from this derived various generating function identities. We take this further, highlighting some combinatorial results about Dyck paths obtained via grammatical proof and generalizing some of Zeilberger's grammars to infinite families.
We exploit Krattenthaler's bijection between 123-avoiding permutations and Dyck paths to determine the Eulerian distribution over the set $S_n(123)$ of 123-avoiding permutations in $S_n$. In particular, we show that the descents of a permutation correspond to valleys and triple falls of the associated Dyck path. We get the Eulerian numbers of $S_n(123)$ by studying the joint distribution of these two statistics on Dyck paths.
In this paper, we construct bijections between Dyck paths, noncrossing partitions, and 231-avoiding permutations, which send the area statistic on Dyck paths to the inversion number on noncrossing partitions and on 231-avoiding permutations. This bijection has the additional property that it simultaneously sends the major index on Dyck paths to the sum of the major index and the inverse major index on noncrossing partitions and on 231-avoiding permutations, respectively. Moreover, we provide generalizations of these constructions to the group of signed permutations.
In this paper we study a subfamily of a classic lattice path, the \emph{Dyck paths}, called \emph{restricted $d$-Dyck} paths, in short $d$-Dyck. A valley of a Dyck path $P$ is a local minimum of $P$; if the difference between the heights of two consecutive valleys (from left to right) is at least $d$, we say that $P$ is a restricted $d$-Dyck path. The \emph{area} of a Dyck path is the sum of the absolute values of $y$-components of all points in the path. We find the number of peaks and the area of all paths of a given length in the set of $d$-Dyck paths. We give a bivariate generating functio…
We present a generating function and a closed counting formula in two variables that enumerate a family of classes of permutations that avoid or contain an increasing pattern of length three and have a prescribed number of occurrences of another pattern of length three. This gives a refinement of some previously studied statistics, most notably one by Noonan. The formula is also shown to enumerate a family of classes of Dyck paths and Standard Young Tableaux, and a bijection is given between the corresponding classes of these two families of objects. Finally, the results obtained are used to s…
Recently, Kenyon and Wilson introduced Dyck tilings, which are certain tilings of the region between two Dyck paths. The enumeration of Dyck tilings is related with hook formulas for forests and the combinatorics of Hermite polynomials. The first goal of this work is to give an alternative point of view on Dyck tilings by making use of the weak order and the Bruhat order on permutations. Then we introduce two natural generalizations: $k$-Dyck tilings and symmetric Dyck tilings. We are led to consider Stirling permutations, and define an analog of the Bruhat order on them. We show that certain …
We consider the problem of enumerating Dyck paths staying weakly above the x-axis with a limit to the number of consecutive up steps, or a limit to the number of consecutive down steps. We use Finite Operator Calculus to obtain formulas for the number of all such paths reaching a given point in the first quadrant. All our results are based on the Eulerian coefficients.
In this paper we introduce a new bijection from the set of Dyck paths to itself. This bijection has the property that it maps statistics that appeared recently in the study of pattern-avoiding permutations into classical statistics on Dyck paths, whose distribution is easy to obtain. We also present a generalization of the bijection, as well as several applications of it to enumeration problems of statistics in restricted permutations.
Three-dimensional Catalan numbers are a variant of the classical (bidimensional) Catalan numbers, that count, among other interesting objects, the standard Young tableaux of shape (n,n,n). In this paper, we present a structural bijection between two three-dimensional Catalan objects: 1234-avoiding up-down permutations, and a class of weighted Dyck paths.
This paper enumerates all juxtaposition classes of the form "Av($abc$) next to Av($xy$)", where $abc$ is a permutation of length three and $xy$ is a permutation of length two. We use Dyck paths decorated by sequences of points to represent elements from such a juxtaposition class. Context-free grammars are then used to enumerate these decorated Dyck paths.
Dyck paths are one of the most important objects in enumerative combinatorics, and there are many papers devoted to counting selected families of Dyck paths. Here we present two approaches for the automatic counting of many such families, using both a "dumb" approach (driven by numeric dynamic programming) that often works in practice, and a "clever" approach, needed for larger problems, driven by "symbolic" dynamic programming. Both approaches are fully automated and implemented in Maple.
For any integer $m\geq 2$ and $r \in \{1,\dots, m\}$, let $f_n^{m,r}$ denote the number of $n$-Dyck paths whose peak's heights are $im+r$ for some integer $i$. We find the generating function of $f_n^{m,r}$ satisfies a simple algebraic functional equation of degree $2$. The $r=m$ case is particularly nice and we give a combinatorial proof. By using the Sulanke and Xin's continued fraction method, we calculate the Hankel determinants for $f_n^{m,r}$. The special case $r=m$ of our result solves a conjecture proposed by Chien, Eu and Fu. We also enriched the class of eventually periodic Hankel de…
We give a bijection between permutations of length 2n and certain pairs of Dyck paths with labels on the down steps. The bijection arises from a game in which two players alternate selecting from a set of 2n items: the permutation encodes the players' preference ordering of the items, and the Dyck paths encode the order in which items are selected under optimal play. We enumerate permutations by certain statistics, AA inversions and BB inversions, which have natural interpretations in terms of the game. We give new proofs of classical identities such as \sum_p \prod_{i=1}^n q^{h_i -1} [h_i]_q …
We prove a recent conjecture by René Marczinzik involving certain statistics on Dyck paths that originate in the representation theory of Nakayama algebras of a linearly oriented quiver. We do so by analysing the effect of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley bijection between Dyck paths and 321-avoiding permutations on these statistics, which was suggested by the result of a query issued to the online database FindStat.
We introduce the notion of pattern in the context of lattice paths, and investigate it in the specific case of Dyck paths. Similarly to the case of permutations, the pattern-containment relation defines a poset structure on the set of all Dyck paths, which we call the Dyck pattern poset. Given a Dyck path P, we determine a formula for the number of Dyck paths covered by P, as well as for the number of Dyck paths covering P. We then address some typical pattern-avoidance issues, enumerating some classes of pattern-avoiding Dyck paths. Finally, we offer a conjecture concerning the asymptotic beh…
It is well known that the number of non-isomorphic unit interval orders on $[n]$ equals the $n$-th Catalan number. Using work of Skandera and Reed and work of Postnikov, we show that each unit interval order on $[n]$ naturally induces a rank $n$ positroid on $[2n]$. We call the positroids produced in this fashion unit interval positroids. We characterize the unit interval positroids by describing their associated decorated permutations, showing that each one must be a $2n$-cycle encoding a Dyck path of length $2n$. We also provide recipes to read the decorated permutation of a unit interval po…
We exploit Krattenthaler's bijection between the set $S_n(3\textrm{-}1\textrm{-}2)$ of permutations in $S_n$ avoiding the classical pattern $3\textrm{-}1\textrm{-}2$ and Dyck $n$-paths to study the distribution of every consecutive pattern of length 3 on the set $S_n(3\textrm{-}1\textrm{-}2)$. We show that these consecutive patterns split into 3 equidistribution classes, by means of an involution on Dyck paths due to E.Deutsch. In addition, we state equidistribution theorems concerning triplets of statistics relative to the occurrences of the consecutive patterns of length 3 in a permutation.
Kim and Drake used generating functions to prove that the number of 2-distant noncrossing matchings, which are in bijection with little Schroeder paths, is the same as the weight of Dyck paths in which downsteps from even height have weight 2. This work presents bijections from those Dyck paths to little Schroeder paths, and from a similar set of Dyck paths to big Schroeder paths. We show the effect of these bijections on the corresponding matchings, find generating functions for two new classes of lattice paths, and demonstrate a relationship with 231-avoiding permutations.
We show that the distribution of the number of peaks at height $i$ modulo $k$ in $k$-Dyck paths of a given length is independent of $i\in[0,k-1]$ and is the reversal of the distribution of the total number of peaks. Moreover, these statistics, together with the number of double descents, are jointly equidistributed with any of their permutations. We also generalize this result to generalized Motzkin paths and generalized ballot paths.
In this note, we present constructive bijections from Dyck and Motzkin meanders with catastrophes to Dyck paths avoiding some patterns. As a byproduct, we deduce correspondences from Dyck and Motzkin excursions to restricted Dyck paths.
We study the descent distribution over the set of centrosymmetric permutations that avoid the pattern of length 3. Our main tool in the most puzzling case, namely, $τ=123$ and $n$ even, is a bijection that associates a Dyck prefix of length $2n$ to every centrosymmetric permutation in $S_{2n}$ that avoids 123.
A rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$ is an increasing unit-step lattice path from $(0,0)$ to $(m,d) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ that never goes above the diagonal line $y = (d/m)x$. On the other hand, a positroid of rank $d$ on the ground set $[d+m]$ is a special type of matroid coming from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. In this paper we describe how to naturally assign a rank $d$ positroid on the ground set $[d+m]$, which we name rational Dyck positroid, to each rational Dyck path of type $(m,d)$. We show that such an assignment is one-to-one. There are several families of combinatorial objects …
We study the distribution of the statistics 'number of fixed points' and 'number of excedances' in permutations avoiding subsets of patterns of length 3. We solve all the cases of simultaneous avoidance of more than one pattern, giving generating functions enumerating these two statistics. Some cases are generalized to patterns of arbitrary length. For avoidance of one single pattern we give partial results. We also describe the distribution of these statistics in involutions avoiding any subset of patterns of length 3. The main technique is to use bijections between pattern-avoiding permutati…
The diagram of a 132-avoiding permutation can easily be characterized: it is simply the diagram of a partition. Based on this fact, we present a new bijection between 132-avoiding and 321-avoiding permutations. We will show that this bijection translates the correspondences between these permutations and Dyck paths given by Krattenthaler and by Billey-Jockusch-Stanley, respectively, to each other. Moreover, the diagram approach yields simple proofs for some enumerative results concerning forbidden patterns in 132-avoiding permutations.
The large Schroder numbers are known to count several classes of permutations avoiding two 4-letter patterns. Here we show they count another family of permutations, those whose left to right minima decomposition, when reversed, is 321-avoiding. The main tool is the Mansour-Deng-Du bijection from 321-avoiding permutations to Dyck paths.
We study combinatorial properties of a rational Dyck path by decomposing it into a tuple of Dyck paths. The combinatorial models such as $b$-Stirling permutations, $(b+1)$-ary trees, parenthesis presentations, and binary trees play central roles to establish a correspondence between the rational Dyck path and the tuple of Dyck paths. We reinterpret two orders, the Young and the rotation orders, on rational Dyck paths in terms of the tuple of Dyck paths by use of the decomposition. As an application, we show a duality between $(a,b)$-Dyck paths and $(b,a)$-Dyck paths in terms of binary trees.
We prove a generalization of a conjecture of Dokos, Dwyer, Johnson, Sagan, and Selsor giving a recursion for the inversion polynomial of 321-avoiding permutations. We also answer a question they posed about finding a recursive formulas for the major index polynomial of 321-avoiding permutations. Other properties of these polynomials are investigated as well. Our tools include Dyck and 2-Motzkin paths, polyominoes, and continued fractions.
The set of Dyck paths of length $2n$ inherits a lattice structure from a bijection with the set of noncrossing partitions with the usual partial order. In this paper, we study the joint distribution of two statistics for Dyck paths: \emph{area} (the area under the path) and \emph{rank} (the rank in the lattice). While area for Dyck paths has been studied, pairing it with this rank function seems new, and we get an interesting $(q,t)$-refinement of the Catalan numbers. We present two decompositions of the corresponding generating function: one refines an identity of Carlitz and Riordan; the oth…
A Mahonian d-function is a Mahonian statistic that can be expressed as a linear combination of vincular pattern statistics of length at most d. Babson and Steingrimsson classified all Mahonian 3-functions up to trivial bijections and identified many of them with well-known Mahonian statistics in the literature. We prove a host of Mahonian 3-function equidistributions over pattern avoiding sets of permutations. Tools used include block decomposition, Dyck paths and generating functions.
We define a map between the set of permutations that avoid either the four patterns $3214,3241,4213,4231$ or $3124,3142,4123,4132$, and the set of Dyck prefixes. This map, when restricted to either of the two classes, turns out to be a bijection that allows us to determine some notable features of these permutations, such as the distribution of the statistics "number of ascents", "number of left-to-right maxima", "first element", and "position of the maximum element"
Dyck tilings are certain tilings in the region surrounded by two Dyck paths. We study bijections and combinatorial objects bijective to Dyck tilings, which include Dyck tiling strip (DTS) and Dyck tiling ribbon (DTR) bijections, increasing and decreasing trees, Hermite histories, Dyck tableaux and tree-like tableaux. Dyck tableaux and tree-like tableaux are originally defined for a zigzag path, or equivalently a permutation. We generalize them to the case of general Dyck paths. We show that the most properties of Dyck tableaux can be generalized to the generic case, and show some enumerative r…
We give a natural definition of rowmotion for $321$-avoiding permutations, by translating, through bijections involving Dyck paths and the Lalanne--Kreweras involution, the analogous notion for antichains of the positive root poset of type $A$. We prove that some permutation statistics, such as the number of fixed points, are homomesic under rowmotion, meaning that they have a constant average over its orbits. Our setting also provides a more natural description of the celebrated Armstrong--Stump--Thomas equivariant bijection between antichains and non-crossing matchings in types $A$ and $B$, …
We study the total number of occurrences of several vincular (also called generalized) patterns and other statistics, such as the major index and the Denert statistic, on permutations avoiding a pattern of length 3, extending results of Bona (2010, 2012) and Homberger (2012). In particular, for 2-3-1-avoiding permutations, we find the total number of occurrences of any vincular pattern of length 3. In some cases the answer is given by simple expressions involving binomial coefficients. The tools we use are bijections with Dyck paths, generating functions, and block decompositions of permutatio…
We consider the distribution of ascents, descents, peaks, valleys, double ascents, and double descents over permutations avoiding a set of patterns. Many of these statistics have already been studied over sets of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length 3. However, the distribution of peaks over 321-avoiding permutations is new and we relate it statistics on Dyck paths. We also obtain new interpretations of a number of well-known combinatorial sequences by studying these statistics over permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3.
Let $T_n$ be the set of 321-avoiding permutations of order $n$. Two properties of $T_n$ are proved: (1) The {\em last descent} and {\em last index minus one} statistics are equidistributed over $T_n$, and also over subsets of permutations whose inverse has an (almost) prescribed descent set. An analogous result holds for Dyck paths. (2) The sign-and-last-descent enumerators for $T_{2n}$ and $T_{2n+1}$ are essentially equal to the last-descent enumerator for $T_n$. The proofs use a recursion formula for an appropriate multivariate generating function.
In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $π$ is independent of the choice of $π\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $π\in S_…
We prove that the Mahonian-Stirling pairs of permutation statistics $(\sor, \cyc)$ and $(\inv, \mathrm{rlmin})$ are equidistributed on the set of permutations that correspond to arrangements of $n$ non-atacking rooks on a Ferrers board with $n$ rows and $n$ columns. The proofs are combinatorial and use bijections between matchings and Dyck paths and a new statistic, sorting index for matchings, that we define. We also prove a refinement of this equidistribution result which describes the minimal elements in the permutation cycles and the right-to-left minimum letters. Moreover, we define a sor…
In this paper, we characterize and enumerate pattern-avoiding permutations composed of only 3-cycles. In particular, we answer the question for the six patterns of length 3. We find that the number of permutations composed of $n$ 3-cycles that avoid the pattern 231 (equivalently 312) is given by $3^{n-1}$, while the generating function for the number of those that avoid the pattern 132 (equivalently 213) is given by a formula involving the generating functions for the well-known Motzkin numbers and Catalan numbers. The number of permutations composed of $n$ 3-cycles that avoid the pattern 321 …
Previous work has studied the pattern count on singly restricted permutations. In this work, we focus on patterns of length 3 in multiply restricted permutations, especially for double and triple pattern-avoiding permutations. We derive explicit formulae or generating functions for various occurrences of length 3 patterns on multiply restricted permutations, as well as some combinatorial interpretations for non-trivial pattern relationships.
Motivated by recent results on quasi-Stirling permutations, which are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid the "crossing" patterns 1212 and 2121, we consider nonnesting permutations, defined as those that avoid the patterns 1221 and 2112 instead. We show that the polynomial giving the distribution of the number of descents on nonnesting permutations is a product of an Eulerian polynomial and a Narayana polynomial. It follows that, rather unexpectedly, this polynomial is palindromic. We provide bijective proofs of these facts by composing various transformations on Dy…
