In this article we obtain some positive results about the existence of a common nontrivial invariant subspace for $N$-tuples of not necessarily commuting operators on Banach spaces with a Schauder basis. The concept of joint quasinilpotence plays a basic role. Our results complement recent work by Kosiek \cite{6} and Ptak \cite{8}.
We show that finitely subgraded Lie algebras of compact operators have invariant subspaces when conditions of quasinilpotence are imposed on certain components of the subgrading. This allows us to obtain some useful information about the structure of such algebras. As an application, we prove a number of results on the existence of invariant subspaces for algebraic structures of compact operators. Along the way we obtain new criteria for the triangularizability of a Lie algebra of compact operators.
We prove that if T is an operator on an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space whose spectrum and essential spectrum are both connected and whose Fredholm index is only 0 or 1, then the only nontrivial norm-stable invariant subspaces of T are the finite-dimensional ones. We also characterize norm-stable invariant subspaces of any weighted unilateral shift operator. We show that quasianalytic shift operators are points of norm continuity of the lattice of the invariant subspaces. We also provide a necessary condition for strongly stable invariant subspaces for certain operators.
In the almost periodic context, any $H_0^2-$space cannot be generated by one of its elements. Together with cocycle argument, this derives that there exist all kinds of invariant subspaces without single generator, from which we can answer some questions on invariant subspace theory.
We prove that the nearly invariant subspaces of a de Branges space which have no common zeros are precisely of the form an exponential function times a de Branges space.
In this paper we study subspaces which are invariant under squares and cubes (separately as well as jointly) of unicellular backward weighted shift operators on a separable Hilbert space. The finite-dimensional subspaces are characterized for all weights and the infinite-dimensional subspaces are characterized for two classes of weights.
We relax assumptions for a dissipative operator in Krein space to possess a maximal non-negative invariant subspace. Our main result is a generalization of a well-known Pontrjagin-Krein-Langer-Azizov theorem. Then we investigate the semigroup properties of the restriction of the operator onto the invariant subspace.
In this note we extend D. Singh and A. A. W. Mehanna's invariant subspace theorem for $RH^1$ (the real Banach space of analytic functions in $H^1$ with real Taylor coefficients) to the simply invariant subspaces of $RL^1$ (the real Banach space of functions in $L^1$ with real Fourier coefficients).
By applying methods of Duhamel algebra and reproducing kernels, we prove that every linear bounded operator on the Hardy-Hilbert space H^{2}(D) has a nontrivial invariant subspace. This solves affirmatively the Invariant Subspace Problem in the Hilbert space.
Following Beurling's theorem and a study of the topology of invariant subspaces by R. Douglas and C. Pearcy description of path connected components of invariant subspace lattice for shift of multiplicity one has been given by R.Yang. This paper generalizes result to arbitrary finite multiplicity. We show that there exists one to one correspondence between the invariant subspace lattice of shift of arbitrary finite multiplicity and the space of inner functions.
In this article, we briefly describe nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces with finite defect for a shift operator $T$ having finite multiplicity acting on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ as a generalization of nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces introduced by Liang and Partington in \cite{YP}. In other words we characterize nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces with finite defect in terms of backward shift invariant subspaces in vector-valued Hardy spaces by using Theorem 3.5 in \cite{CDP}. Furthermore, we also provide a concrete representation of the nearly $T_B^{-1}$ invariant subspaces…
In this article, we characterize nearly invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward shift operator acting on the vector-valued Hardy space which is a vectorial generalization of a result of Chalendar-Gallardo-Partington (C-G-P). Using this characterization of nearly invariant subspace under the backward shift we completely describe the almost invariant subspaces for the shift and its adjoint acting on the vector valued Hardy space.
We construct a complete locally convex topological vector space $X$ of countable algebraic dimension and a continuous linear operator $T:X\to X$ such that $T$ has no non-trivial closed invariant subspaces.
Operators of multiplication by independent variables on the space of square summable functions over the torus and its Hardy subspace are considered. Invariant subspaces where the operators are compatible are described.
In this paper, we discuss to the nonuniform sampling problem in principal shift-invariant subspaces of mixed Lebesgue spaces. We proposed a fast reconstruction algorithm which allows to exactly reconstruct the functions in the principal shift-invariant subspaces as long as the sampling set $X=\{(x_{j},y_{k}):k,j\in \mathbb{J}\}$ is sufficiently dense. Our results improve the result in \cite{LiLiu}.
Using the tools of Sz.-Nagy--Foias theory of contractions, we describe in detail the invariant subspaces of the operator $ S\oplus S^* $, where $ S $ is the unilateral shift on a Hilbert space. This answers a question of Câmara and Ross.
In this paper we first study the structure of the scalar and vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. We then subsequently produce some fruitful applications of our new results. We produce a decomposition theorem for the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. More specifically, we show every vector-valued nearly invariant subspace with a finite defect can be written as the isometric image of a backwards shift invariant subspace. We also show that there is a link between the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces and the scalar-valued nearly invar…
We construct a continuous linear operator acting on the space of smooth functions on the real line without non-trivial invariant subspaces. This is a first example of such an operator acting on a Fréchet space without a continuous norm. The construction is based on the ideas due to C. Read who constructed a continuous operator without non-trivial invariant subspaces on the Banach space $\ell_1$.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators in a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators in a real Hilbert space.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators on a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators on a real Hilbert space.
In this note, we describe the backward shift invariant subspaces for a large class of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. This class includes in particular de Branges-Rovnyak spaces (the non-extreme case) and the range space of co-analytic Toeplitz operators.
We prove that every lattice homomorphism acting on a Banach space $\mathcal{X}$ with the lattice structure given by an unconditional basis has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace. In fact, it has a non-trivial closed invariant ideal, which is no longer true for every positive operator on such a space. Motivated by these later examples, we characterize tridiagonal positive operators without non-trivial closed invariant ideals on $\mathcal{X}$ extending to this context a result of Grivaux on the existence of non-trivial closed invariant subspaces for tridiagonal operators.
We show that for any bounded operator $T$ acting on infinite dimensional, complex Banach space, and for any $\varepsilon>0$, there exists an operator $F$ of rank at most one and norm smaller than $\varepsilon$ such that $T+F$ has an invariant subspace of infinite dimension and codimension. A version of this result was proved in \cite{T19} under additional spectral conditions for $T$ or $T^*$. This solves in full generality the quantitative version of the invariant subspace problem for rank-one perturbations.
In this paper, we prove the Mohebi-Radjabalipour Conjecture under a little additional condition, and obtain a new invariant subspace theorem for subdecomposable operators. Our main results contain known results in this topic as special cases. Moreover, the condition in our theorem is really much weaker, much simpler and much more nature than that in the known results.
A regular generalized sampling theory in some structured T-invariant subspaces of a Hilbert space H, where T denotes a bounded invertible operator in H, is established in this paper. This is done by walking through the most important cases which generalize the usual sampling settings.
We show that a bounded quasinilpotent operator $T$ acting on an infinite dimensional Banach space has an invariant subspace if and only if there exists a rank one operator $F$ and a scalar $α\in\mathbb{C}$, $α\neq 0$, $α\neq 1$, such that $T+F$ and $T+αF$ are also quasinilpotent. We also prove that for any fixed rank-one operator $F$, almost all perturbations $T+αF$ have invariant subspaces of infinite dimension and codimension.
The use of unitary invariant subspaces of a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ is nowadays a recognized fact in the treatment of sampling problems. Indeed, shift-invariant subspaces of $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ and also periodic extensions of finite signals are remarkable examples where this occurs. As a consequence, the availability of an abstract unitary sampling theory becomes a useful tool to handle these problems. In this paper we derive a sampling theory for tensor products of unitary invariant subspaces. This allows to merge the cases of finitely/infinitely generated unitary invariant subspaces former…
We present a general method for constructing operators without non-trivial invariant closed subsets on a large class of non-reflexive Banach spaces. In particular, our approach unifies and generalizes several constructions due to Read of operators without non-trivial invariant subspaces on the spaces $\ell_{1}$, $c_{0}$ or $\oplus_{\ell_{2}}J$, and without non-trivial invariant subsets on $\ell_{1}$. We also investigate how far our methods can be extended to the Hilbertian setting, and construct an operator on a quasireflexive dual Banach space which has no non-trivial $w^{*}$-closed invariant…
We describe necessary and sufficient conditions for a $J$-dissipative operator in a Krein space to have maximal semidefinite invariant subspaces. The semigroup properties of the restrictions of an operator to these subspaces are studied. Applications are given to the case when an operator admits matrix representation with respect to the canonical decomposition of the space. The main conditions are given in the terms of the interpolation theory of Banach spaces.
The theorem on the existence of maximal nonnegative invariant subspaces for a special class of dissipative operators in Hilbert space with indefinite inner product is proved in the paper. It is shown in addition that the spectra of the restrictions of these operators on the corresponding invariant subspaces lie in the closed upper half-plane. The obtained theorem is a generalization of well-known results of L.S.Pontrjagin, H.K.Langer, M.G.Krein and T.Ja.Azizov devoted to this subject.
We obtaine the full characterization of proper closed invariant subspaces of a generalized backward shift operator (Pommiez operator) in the Frechet space of all holomorphic functions on a simply connected domain $Ω$ of the complex plane, containing the origin. In the case when the function, which defines this operator, is not has zeros in $Ω$ all such subspaces are finite-dimensional. If additionally $Ω$ coincides with the complex plane, then the considered operator is unicellular. If this function has zeros in $Ω$, then the family of mentioned invariant subspaces splits into two classes: the…
It is well known that the structure of nontrival invariant subspaces for the shift operator on the Bergman space is extremely complicated and very little is known about their specific structures, and that a complete description of the structure seems unlikely. In this paper, we find that any invariant subspace $M(\neq \{0\})$ for the shift operator $M_z$ on the Bergman space $A^{^p}_α(\D)~(1\leq p< \infty,~~-1<α<\infty)$ contains a nonempty subset that lies in $A^{^p}_α(\D)\backslash H^{^p}(\D)$. To a certain extent, this result describes the specific structure of every nonzero invariant subsp…
Let $X$ be a Banach space, $A\in B(X)$ and $M$ be an invariant subspace of $A$. We present an alternative proof that, if the spectrum of the restriction of $A$ to $M$ contains a point that is in any given hole in the spectrum of $A$, then the entire hole is in the spectrum of the restriction.
The translation of an operator is defined by using conjugation with time-frequency shifts. Thus, one can define $Λ$-shift-invariant subspaces of Hilbert-Schmidt operators, finitely generated, with respect to a lattice $Λ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$. These spaces can be seen as a generalization of classical shift-invariant subspaces of square integrable functions. Obtaining sampling results for these subspaces appears as a natural question that can be motivated by the problem of channel estimation in wireless communications. These sampling results are obtained in the light of the frame theory in a se…
In this article we study the structure of $Γ$-invariant spaces of $L^2(\bf R)$. Here $\bf R$ is a second countable LCA group. The invariance is with respect to the action of $Γ$, a non commutative group in the form of a semidirect product of a discrete cocompact subgroup of $\bf R$ and a group of automorphisms. This class includes in particular most of the crystallographic groups. We obtain a complete characterization of $Γ$-invariant subspaces in terms of range functions associated to shift-invariant spaces. We also define a new notion of range function adapted to the $Γ$-invariance and const…
Let $\A$ be a semisimple unital commutative Banach algebra. We say that a Banach $\A$-module $M$ is nice if every proper closed submodule of $M$ is contained in a closed submodule of $M$ of codimension 1. We provide examples of nice and non-nice modules.
There has been a long-standing conjecture in Banach algebra that every amenable operator is similar to a normal operator. In this paper, we study the structure of amenable operators on Hilbert spaces. At first, we show that the conjecture is equivalent to every non-scalar amenable operator has a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace and equivalent to every amenable operator is similar to a reducible operator and has a non-trivial invariant subspace; and then, we give two decompositions for amenable operators, which supporting the conjecture.
Given a Polish topology $τ$ on ${\mathcal{B}_{1}(X)}$, the set of all contraction operators on $X=\ell_p$, $1\le p<\infty$ or $X=c_0$, we prove several results related to the following question: does a typical $T\in {\mathcal{B}_{1}(X)}$ in the Baire Category sense has a non-trivial invariant subspace? In other words, is there a dense $G_δ$ set $\mathcal G\subseteq ({\mathcal{B}_{1}(X)},τ)$ such that every $T\in\mathcal G$ has a non-trivial invariant subspace? We mostly focus on the Strong Operator Topology and the Strong$^*$ Operator Topology.
We define the local trace function for subspaces of $\ltworn$ which are invariant under integer translation. Our trace function contains the dimension function and the spectral function defined by Bownik and Rzeszotnik and completely characterizes the given translation invariant subspace. It has properties such as positivity, additivity, monotony and some form of continuity. It behaves nicely under dilations and modulations. We use the local trace function to deduce, using short and simple arguments, some fundamental facts about wavelets such as the characterizing equations, the equality betwe…
We describe the proper closed invariant subspaces of the integration operator when it acts continuously on countable intersections and countable unions of weighted Banach spaces of holomorphic functions on the unit disc or the complex plane. Applications are given to the case of Korenblum type spaces and Hörmander algebras of entire functions.
We show that any bounded operator $T$ on a separable, reflexive, infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$ admits a rank one perturbation which has an invariant subspace of infinite dimension and codimension. In the non-reflexive spaces, we show that the same is true for operators which have non-eigenvalues in the boundary of their spectrum. In the Hilbert space, our methods produce perturbations that are also small in norm, improving on an old result of Brown and Pearcy.
In this paper a sampling theory for unitary invariant subspaces associated to locally compact abelian (LCA) groups is deduced. Working in the LCA group context allows to obtain, in a unified way, sampling results valid for a wide range of problems which are interesting in practice, avoiding also cumbersome notation. Along with LCA groups theory, the involved mathematical technique is that of frame theory which meets matrix analysis when appropriate dual frames are computed.
The main result of the paper is that a system of invariant subspaces of a (completely non-unitary) Hilbert space contraction $T$ with finite defects (rank$(I-T^*T)<\infty$, rank$(I-TT^*)<\infty$) is an unconditional basis (Riesz basis) if and only if it is uniformly minimal. Results of such type are quite well known: for a system of eigenspaces of a contraction with defects $1-1$ it is simply the famous Carleson interpolation theorem. For general invariant subspaces of operators with defects $1-1$ such theorem was proved by V. I. Vasyunin. Then partial results for the case of finite defects we…
Let $\{T(t)\}_{t\geq0}$ be a $C_0$-semigroup on an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space; a suitable definition of near $\{T(t)^*\}_{t\geq0}$ invariance of a subspace is presented in this paper. A series of prototypical examples for minimal nearly $\{S(t)^*\}_{t\geq0}$ invariant subspaces for the shift semigroup $\{S(t)\}_{t\geq0}$ on $L^2(0,\infty)$ are demonstrated, which have close links with nearly $T_θ^*$ invariance on Hardy spaces of the unit disk for Toeplitz operators associated with an inner function $θ$. Especially, the corresponding subspaces on Hardy spaces of the right half…
The method of compatible sequences is introduced in order to produce non-trivial (closed) invariant subspaces of (bounded linear) operators. Also a topological tool is used which is new in the search of invariant subspaces: the extraction of continuous selections of lower semicontinuous set valued functions. The advantage of this method over previously known methods is that if an operator acts on a reflexive Banach space then it has a non-trivial invariant subspace if and only if there exist compatible sequences (their definition refers to a fixed operator). Using compatible sequences a result…
Bishop operators $T_α$ acting on $L^2[0,1)$ were proposed by E. Bishop in the fifties as possible operators which might entail counterexamples for the Invariant Subspace Problem. We prove that all the Bishop operators are biquasitriangular and, derive as a consequence that they are norm limits of nilpotent operators. Moreover, by means of arithmetical techniques along with a theorem of Atzmon, the set of irrationals $α\in (0,1)$ for which $T_α$ is known to possess non-trivial closed invariant subspaces is considerably enlarged, extending previous results by Davie, MacDonald and Flattot. Furthe…
