A K3 category is by definition a Calabi-Yau category of dimension two. Geometrically K3 categories occur as bounded derived categories of (twisted) coherent sheaves on K3 or abelian surfaces. A K3 category is generic if there are no spherical objects (or just one up to shift). We study stability conditions on K3 categories as introduced by Bridgeland and prove his conjecture about the topology of the stability manifold and the autoequivalences group for generic twisted projective K3, abelian surfaces, and K3 surfaces with trivial Picard group.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring. We introduce the notion of support of objects in an $R$-linear triangulated category. As an application, we study the non-existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on $R$-linear triangulated categories.
We study stability conditions on the derived categories of coherent sheaves on some projective varieties. We give a complete description of the stability manifold for smooth projective curves and we examine a connected open subset of the stability manifold for projective spaces and del Pezzo surfaces.
We present a notion of $Δ$-stability and stability filtration in arbitrary categories which is equivalent to the existence of Harder-Narasimhan (HN) sequences on objects. Indeed it is equivalent to the existence of a zero morphism, a partial order on objects, and a collection of some universal sequences. In additive categories embedded in an ambient triangulated category, we could obtain a numerical polynomial or central charge of objects by calculating the Euler characteristic of slope sequences and objects, inducing a partial order and HN sequences. In the case of normal projective surfaces …
This paper introduces the notion of a stability condition on a triangulated category. The motivation comes from the study of Dirichlet branes in string theory, and especially from M.R. Douglas's notion of $Π$-stability. From a mathematical point of view, the most interesting feature of the definition is that the set of stability conditions $\Stab(\T)$ on a fixed category $\T$ has a natural topology, thus defining a new invariant of triangulated categories. After setting up the necessary definitions I prove a deformation result which shows that the space $\Stab(\T)$ with its natural topology is…
We introduce $q$-stability conditions $(σ,s)$ on Calabi-Yau-$\mathbb{X}$ categories $\mathcal{D}_\mathbb{X}$, where $σ$ is a stability condition on $\mathcal{D}_\mathbb{X}$ and $s$ a complex number. We prove the corresponding deformation theorem, that $\operatorname{QStab}_s\mathcal{D}_\mathbb{X}$ is a complex manifold of dimension $n$ for fixed $s$, where $n$ is the rank of the Grotendieck group of $\mathcal{D}_\mathbb{X}$ over $\mathbb{Z}[q^{\pm 1}]$. When $s=N$ is an integer, we show that the $q$-stability conditions can be identified with the stability conditions on $\mathcal{D}_N$, provid…
This article deals with the quotient category of the category of coherent sheaves on an irreducible smooth projective variety by the full subcategory of sheaves supported in codimension greater than c. It turns out that this category has homological dimension c. As an application of this, we will describe the space of stability conditions on its derived category in the case c=1. Moreover, we describe all exact equivalences between these quotient categories in this particular case which is closely related to classification problems in birational geometry.
We study relations between the Serre dimension defined as the growth of entropy of the Serre functor and the global dimension of Bridgeland stability conditions due to Ikeda-Qiu. A fundamental inequality between the Serre dimension and the infimum of the global dimensions is proved. Moreover, we characterize Gepner type stability conditions on fractional Calabi-Yau categories via the Serre dimension, and classify triangulated categories of the Serre dimension lower than one with a Gepner type stability condition.
In this paper, we study the space of stability conditions on a certain $N$-Calabi-Yau ($\text{CY}_N$) category associated to an $A_n$-quiver. Recently, Bridgeland and Smith constructed stability conditions on some $\text{CY}_3$ categories from meromorphic quadratic differentials with simple zeros. Generalizing their results to higher dimensional Calabi-Yau categories, we describe the space of stability conditions as the universal cover of the space of polynomials of degree $n+1$ with simple zeros. In particular, central charges of stability conditions on $\text{CY}_N$ categories are constructe…
Discrete derived categories were studied initially by Vossieck \cite{Vossieck} and later by Bobiński, Geiß, Skowroński \cite{BGS}. In this article, we define the CW complex of silting pairs for a triangulated category and show that it is contractible in the case of discrete derived categories. We provide an explicit embedding from the silting CW complex into the stability manifold. By work of Qiu and Woolf, there is a deformation retract of the stability manifold onto the silting pairs CW complex. We obtain that the space of stability conditions of discrete derived categories is contractible.
In this paper we develop a theory of stability for $G$-categories (presheaf of categories on the orbit category of $G$), where $G$ is a finite group. We give a description of Mackey functors as $G$-commutative monoids exploit it to characterize $G$-spectra as the $G$-stabilization of $G$-spaces. As an application of this we provide an alternative proof of a theorem by Guillou and May. The theory here is developed in the more general setting of orbital categories.
This is a survey on two closely related subjects. First, we review the study of topological structure of `finite type' components of spaces of Bridgeland's stability conditions on triangulated categories. The key is to understand Happel-Reiten-Smalo tilting as tiling of cells. Second, we review topological realizations of various Fukaya type categories, namely cluster/Calabi-Yau and derived categories from surfaces. The corresponding spaces of stability conditions are of `tame' nature and can be realized as moduli spaces of quadratic differentials due to Bridgeland-Smith and Haiden-Katzarkov-K…
The goal of this paper is to study the subspace of stability condition $Σ_{\mathcal{E}}\subset \mathrm{Stab}(X)$ associated to an exceptional collection $\mathcal{E}$ on a projective variety $X$. Following Emanuele Macrì's approach, we show a certain correspondence between the homotopy class of continuous loops in $Σ_{\mathcal{E}}$ and words of the braid group. In particular, we prove that in the case $X=\mathbb{P}^3$ and $\mathcal{E}=\{\mathcal{O},\mathcal{O}(1),\mathcal{O}(2),\mathcal{O}(3)\}$, the space $Σ_{\mathcal{E}}$ is a connected and simply connected 4-dimensional manifold.
It is shown that there is a useful notion of a relative Bridgeland stability condition on the partially wrapped Fukaya category of a marked surface, relative to some part of the surface's boundary. This construction has nice functorial properties, obeying cutting and gluing relations. This reduces the calculation of stability conditions on the Fukaya category of any fully stopped surface into three types of base cases. Calculations of these cases shows that every Bridgeland stability condition on such categories can be described by flat surfaces. In other words, the map constructed by Haiden-K…
In this paper, we study the space of stability conditions on triangulated categories generated by an exceptional collection. We give an exact description of subspace of stability conditions generated by length 4 complete exceptional collection.
We study some examples of Bridgeland-Douglas stability conditions on triangulated categories. From one side we give a complete description of the stability manifolds for smooth projective curves of positive genus. From the other side we study stability conditions on triangulated categories generated by an exceptional collection. In the case of the projective line this leads to the connectedness and simply-connectedness of the stability manifold.
We study questions motivated by results in the classical theory of dynamical systems in the context of triangulated and A-infinity categories. First, entropy is defined for exact endofunctors and computed in a variety of examples. In particular, the classical entropy of a pseudo-Anosov map is recovered from the induced functor on the Fukaya category. Second, the density of the set of phases of a Bridgeland stability condition is studied and a complete answer is given in the case of bounded derived categories of quivers. Certain exceptional pairs in triangulated categories, which we call Kronec…
We describe the spaces of stability conditions on certain triangulated categories associated to Dynkin diagrams. These categories can be defined either algebraically via module categories of preprojective algebras, or geometrically via coherent sheaves on resolutions of Kleinian singularities. The resulting spaces are related to regular subsets of the corresponding complexified Cartan algebras.
The notion of limit stability on Calabi-Yau 3-folds is introduced by the author to construct an approximation of Bridgeland-Douglas stability conditions at the large volume limit. It has also turned out that the wall-crossing phenomena of limit stable objects seem relevant to the rationality conjecture of the generating functions of Pandharipande-Thomas invariants. In this article, we shall make it clear how wall-crossing formula of the counting invariants of limit stable objects solves the above conjecture.
We define a particular class of topological field theories associated to open strings and prove the resulting D-branes and open strings form the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves. This derivation is a variant of some ideas proposed recently by Douglas. We then argue that any 0-brane on any Calabi-Yau threefold must become unstable along some path in the Kahler moduli space. As a byproduct of this analysis we see how the derived category can be invariant under a birational transformation between Calabi-Yaus.
These are notes of a course given at the 'school on moduli spaces' at the Newton Institute in January 2011. The abstract theory of stability conditions (due to Bridgeland and Douglas) on abelian and triangulated categories is developed via tilting and t-structures. Special emphasis is put on the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties (in particular for curves and K3 surfaces). The lectures were targeted at an audience with little prior knowledge of triangulated categories and stability conditions but with an interest in vector bundles on curves.
Given a holomorphic family of Bridgeland stability conditions over a surface, we define a notion of spectral network which is an object in a Fukaya category of the surface with coefficients in a triangulated DG-category. These spectral networks are analogs of special Lagrangian submanifolds, combining a graph with additional algebraic data, and conjecturally correspond to semistable objects of a suitable stability condition on the Fukaya category with coefficients. They are closely related to the spectral networks of Gaiotto--Moore--Neitzke. One novelty of our approach is that we establish a g…
We find stability conditions ([Do], [Br]) on some derived categories of differential graded modules over a graded algebra studied in [RZ], [KS]. This category arises in both derived Fukaya categories and derived categories of coherent sheaves. This gives the first examples of stability conditions on the A-model side of mirror symmetry, where the triangulated category is not naturally the derived category of an abelian category. The existence of stability conditions, however, gives many such abelian categories, as predicted by mirror symmetry. In our examples in 2 dimensions we completely descr…
Categorically, we introduce the Calabi-Yau-$\mathbb{X}$ categories $\mathcal{D}_{\mathbb{X}}$ of a graded marked surface $\mathbf{S}^λ$, as a $q$-deformation of the topological Fukaya category $\mathcal{D}_\infty$ of $\mathbf{S}^λ$. We show that $\mathcal{D}_\infty$ can be identified with the cluster-$\mathbb{X}$ category associated to $\mathcal{D}_{\mathbb{X}}$. Geometrically, we construct and identify the space of $q$-quadratic differentials on the logarithm surface $\operatorname{log}_{\mathbf{c}} \mathbf{S}_\vartriangle^λ$ with the space of induced $q$-stability conditions on $\mathcal{D}_…
We prove that any `finite-type' component of a stability space of a triangulated category is contractible. The motivating example of such a component is the stability space of the Calabi--Yau-$N$ category $\mathcal{D}(Γ_N Q)$ associated to an ADE Dynkin quiver. In addition to showing that this is contractible we prove that the braid group $\operatorname{Br}(Q)$ acts freely upon it by spherical twists, in particular that the spherical twist group $\operatorname{Br}(Γ_N Q)$ is isomorphic to $\operatorname{Br}(Q)$. This generalises Brav-Thomas' result for the $N=2$ case. Other classes of triangul…
We begin by discussing various ways autoequivalences and stability conditions associated to triangulated categories can interact. Once an appropriate definition of compatibility is formulated, we derive a sufficiency criterion for this compatibility. We next apply this criterion to derived categories associated to Galois covers of the Weierstrass nodal cubic, known as n-gons and denoted by E_n. These are singular non-irreducible genus 1 curves naturally arising in variety of contexts, including as certain degenerations of elliptic curves. In particular, fixing the stability condition to be the…
Calabi-Yau Fermat varieties are obtained from moduli spaces of Lagrangian connect sums of graded Lagrangian vanishing cycles on stability conditions on Fukaya-Seidel categories. These graded Lagrangian vanishing cycles are stable representations of quivers on their mirror stability conditions.
We identify spaces of half-translation surfaces, equivalently complex curves with quadratic differential, with spaces of stability structures on Fukaya-type categories of punctured surfaces. This is achieved by new methods involving the complete classification of objects in these categories, which are defined in an elementary way. We also introduce a number of tools to deal with surfaces of infinite area, where structures similar to those in cluster algebra appear.
We introduce the notion of Gepner type Bridgeland stability conditions on triangulated categories, which depends on a choice of an autoequivalence and a complex number. We conjecture the existence of Gepner type stability conditions on the triangulated categories of graded matrix factorizations of weighted homogeneous polynomials. Such a stability condition may give a natural stability condition for Landau-Ginzburg B-branes, and correspond to the Gepner point of the stringy Kahler moduli space of a quintic 3-fold. The main result is to show our conjecture when the variety defined by the weight…
Let A be an abelian hereditary category with Serre duality. We provide a classification of such categories up to derived equivalence under the additional condition that the Grothendieck group modulo the radical of the Euler form is a free abelian group of finite rank. Such categories are called numerically finite, and this condition is satisfied by the category of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective variety.
This paper introduces a mathematical definition of the category of D-branes in Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds in terms of $A_\infty$-categories. Our categories coincide with the categories of (graded) matrix factorizations for quasi-homogeneous polynomials. After setting up the necessary definitions, we prove that our category for the polynomial $x^{n+1}$ is equivalent to the derived category of representations of the Dynkin quiver of type $A_{n}$. We also construct a special stability condition for the triangulated category in the sense of T. Bridgeland, which should be the "origin" of the space o…
Stability conditions on triangulated categories were introduced by Bridgeland as a 'continuous' generalisation of t-structures. The set of locally-finite stability conditions on a triangulated category is a manifold which has been studied intensively. However, there are mainstream triangulated categories whose stability manifold is the empty set. One example is the compact derived category of the dual numbers over an algebraically closed field. This is one of the motivations in this paper for introducing co-stability conditions as a 'continuous' generalisation of co-t-structures. Our main resu…
Bridgeland stability manifolds of Calabi-Yau categories are of noticeable interest both in mathematics and in physics. By looking at some of the known example, a pattern clearly emerges and gives a fairly precise description of how they look like. In particular, they all seem to have missing loci, which tend to correspond to degenerate stability conditions vanishing on spherical objects. Describing such missing strata is also interesting from a mirror-symmetric perspective, as they conjecturally parametrize interesting types of degenerations of complex structures. All the naive attempts at con…
In this article, we treat stability conditions in the sense of King, Bridgeland and Bayer in a single framework. Following King, we begin with weight functions on a triangulated category, and consider increasingly specialised configurations of triangulated categories, t-structures and stability functions that give equivalent categories of stable objects. Along the way, we recover existing results in representation theory and algebraic geometry, and prove a series of new results on elliptic surfaces, including correspondence theorems for Bridgeland stability conditions and polynomial stability …
In this survey we borrow from Coskun and Huizenga an example of application of Bridgeland stability conditions to birational geometry and we rephrase it without assuming any previous knowledge about derived categories.
In this paper, we study relations between automorphism groups of cubic fourfolds and Kuznetsov components. Firstly, we characterize automorphism groups of cubic fourfolds as subgroups of autoequivalence groups of Kuznetsov components using Bridgeland stability conditions. Secondly, we compare automorphism groups of cubic fourfolds with automorphism groups of their associated K3 surfaces. Thirdly, we note that the existence of a non-trivial symplectic automorphism on a cubic fourfold is related to the existence of associated K3 surfaces.
Using results in a previous paper "Non-semistable exceptional objects in hereditary categories", we focus here on studying the topology of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions on $D^b(Rep_k(Q ))$, where $Q$ is the acyclic triangular quiver (the underlying graph is the extended Dynkin diagram $\widetilde{\mathbb A}_2$). In particular, we prove that this space is contractible (in the previous paper it was shown that it is connected).
We show the existence of Gepner type Bridgeland stability conditions on the triangulated categories of graded matrix factorizations associated with homogeneous polynomials which define general cubic fourfolds containing a plane. The key ingredient is to describe the grade shift functor of matrix factorizations in terms of sheaves of Clifford algebras on the projective plane under Orlov/Kuznetsov equivalence.
A powerful tool of investigation of Fano varieties is provided by exceptional collections in their derived categories. Proving the fullness of such a collection is generally a nontrvial problem, usually solved on a case-by-case basis, with the aid of a deep understanding of the underlying geometry. Likewise, when an exceptional collection is not full, it is not straightforward to determine whether its "residual" category, i.e., its right orthogonal, is the derived category of a variety. We show how one can use the existence of Bridgeland stability condition these residual categories (when they…
In this paper, we describe the spaces of stability conditions for the triangulated categories associated to three dimensional Calabi-Yau fibrations. We deal with two cases, the flat elliptic fibrations and smooth K3 (Abelian) fibrations. In the first case, we will see there exist chamber structures similar to those of the movable cone used in birational geometry. In the second case, we will compare the space with the space of stability conditions for the closed fiber of the fibration.
In this note we interpret a recent result of Gaberdiel, Hohenegger and Volpato in terms of derived equivalences of K3 surfaces. We prove that there is a natural bijection between subgroups of the Conway group Co_1 with invariant lattice of rank at least four and groups of symplectic derived equivalences of D(Coh(X)) of projective K3 surfaces fixing a stability condition.
We define new invariants of 3d Calabi-Yau categories endowed with a stability structure. Intuitively, they count the number of semistable objects with fixed class in the K-theory of the category ("number of BPS states with given charge" in physics language). Formally, our motivic DT-invariants are elements of quantum tori over a version of the Grothendieck ring of varieties over the ground field. Via the quasi-classical limit "as the motive of affine line approaches to 1" we obtain numerical DT-invariants which are closely related to those introduced by Behrend. We study some properties of bot…
We show that boundary conditions in topological open string theory on Calabi-Yau manifolds are objects in the derived category of coherent sheaves, as foreseen in the homological mirror symmetry proposal of Kontsevich. Together with conformal field theory considerations, this leads to a precise criterion determining the BPS branes at any point in CY moduli space, completing the proposal of Pi-stability.
We study stability conditions induced by functors between triangulated categories. Given a finite group acting on a smooth projective variety we prove that the subset of invariant stability conditions embeds as a closed submanifold into the stability manifold of the equivariant derived category. As an application we examine stability conditions on Kummer and Enriques surfaces and we improve the derived version of the Torelli Theorem for the latter surfaces already present in the litterature. We also study the relationship between stability conditions on projective spaces and those on their can…

We investigate conditions for a Fourier-Mukai transform between derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective stacks endowed with actions by finite groups to lift to the associated equivariant derived categories. As an application we give a condition under which a global quotient stack cannot be derived equivalent to a variety. We also apply our techniques to generalised Kummer stacks and symmetric quotients.
We study semi--algebraic domains associated with symplectic tori and conjecturally identified with spaces of stability conditions on the Fukaya categories of these tori. Our motivation is to test which results from the theory of flat surfaces could hold for more general spaces of stability conditions. The main results concern systolic bounds and volume of the moduli space.
We introduce a delooping model of relative exact categories. It gives us a condition that the negative K-group of a relative exact category becomes trivial.
We introduce the notion of a polynomial stability condition, generalizing Bridgeland stability conditions on triangulated categories. We construct and study a family of polynomial stability conditions for any normal projective variety. This family includes both Simpson-stability, and large volume limits of Bridgeland stability conditions. We show that the PT/DT-correspondence relating stable pairs to Donaldson-Thomas invariants (conjectured by Pandharipande and Thomas) can be understood as a wall-crossing in our family of polynomial stability conditions. Similarly, we show that the relation be…
