This is a survey of some recent advances in the theory of singular traces in which the authors have played some part and which were inspired by questions raised by the book of Alain Connes (Noncommutative Geometry, Academic Press 1994). There are some original proofs and ideas but most of the results have appeared elsewhere. Detailed information on the contents is contained in the Introduction.
We study the relationships between Dixmier traces, zeta-functions and traces of heat semigroups beyond the dual of the Macaev ideal and in the general context of semifinite von Neumann algebras. We show that the correct framework for this investigation is that of operator Lorentz spaces possessing an extrapolation description. We demonstrate the applicability of our results to Hörmander-Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. In that context, we prove that the Dixmier trace of a pseudo-differential operator coincide with the `Dixmier integral' of its symbol.
We continue the study of the relationship between Dixmier traces and noncommutative residues initiated by A. Connes. The utility of the residue approach to Dixmier traces is shown by a characterisation of the noncommutative integral in Connes' noncommutative geometry (for a wide class of Dixmier traces) as a generalised limit of vector states associated to the eigenvectors of a compact operator (or an unbounded operator with compact resolvent), i.e. as a generalised quantum limit. Using the characterisation, a criteria involving the eigenvectors of a compact operator and the projections of a v…
We present an ab initio approach to integration theory for nonunital spectral triples. This is done without reference to local units and in the full generality of semifinite noncommutative geometry. The main result is an equality between the Dixmier trace and generalised residue of the zeta function and heat kernel of suitable operators. We also examine definitions for integrable bounded elements of a spectral triple based on zeta function, heat kernel and Dixmier trace techniques. We show that zeta functions and heat kernels yield equivalent notions of integrability, which imply Dixmier trace…
In the present paper we prove that the classes of Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces differ even on the Dixmier ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$. We construct a Marcinkiewicz space $\mathcal M_ψ$ and a positive operator $T\in \mathcal M_ψ$ which is Connes-Dixmier measurable but which is not Dixmier measurable.
We obtain general theorems which enable the calculation of the Dixmier trace in terms of the asymptotics of the zeta function and of the trace of the heat semigroup. We prove our results in a general semi-finite von Neumann algebra. We find for p>1 that the asymptotics of the zeta function determines an ideal strictly larger than {\mathcal L}^{p,\infty} on which the Dixmier trace may be defined. We also establish stronger versions of other results on Dixmier traces and zeta functions.
We define a new class of singular positive traces on the ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$ of $B(H)$ generated by exponentiation invariant generalized limits. We prove that this new class is strictly contained in the class of all Dixmier traces. We also prove a Lidskii-type formula for this class of traces.
This paper introduces a new approach to the non-normal Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces (introduced by Dixmier and adapted to non-commutative geometry by Connes) on a general Marcinkiewicz space associated with an arbitrary semifinite von Neumann algebra. By unifying various constructions, and translating the situation of Dixmier traces into the theory of singular symmetric functionals on Marcinkiewicz function/operator spaces, we obtain the results (i) and (ii) below. The results are stated here, for the reader, in terms of the ideal $L^{(1,\infty)}$ of compact operators whose partial sums o…
In this paper we provide sharp results for the Dixmier traceability of discrete pseudo-differential operators on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^n)$. In this setting, we introduce a suitable notion of a class of classical symbols which provide a class of Dixmier traceable discrete pseudo-differential operators. We also present a formula for the Dixmier trace of a Dixmier traceable discrete pseudo-differential operator by using the Connes equivalence between the Wodzicki residue and the Dixmier trace.
We establish several analogues of the classical Lidskii Theorem for some special classes of singular traces (Dixmier traces and Connes-Dixmier traces) used in noncommutative geometry.
We extend Dixmier's construction of singular traces (see \cite{Dixmier}) to arbitrary fully symmetric operator ideals. In fact, we show that the set of Dixmier traces is weak$^*$ dense in the set of all fully symmetric traces (that is, those traces which respect Hardy-Littlewood submajorization). Our results complement and extend earlier work of Wodzicki \cite{Wodzicki}.
We prove perturbation results for traces on normed ideals in semifinite von Neumann algebra factors. This includes the case of Dixmier traces. In particular, we establish existence of spectral shift measures with initial operators being dissipative or bounded, and show that these measures can have singular components in the case of Dixmier traces. We also establish a linearization formula for a Dixmier trace applied to perturbed operator functions, a result that does not typically hold for normal traces.
We develop the theory of modulated operators in general principal ideals of compact operators. For Laplacian modulated operators we establish Connes' trace formula in its local Euclidean model and a global version thereof. It expresses Dixmier traces in terms of the vector-valued Wodzicki residue. We demonstrate the applicability of our main results in the context of log-classical pseudo-differential operators, studied by Lesch, and a class of operators naturally appearing in noncommutative geometry.
We consider the spectral behavior and noncommutative geometry of commutators $[P,f]$, where $P$ is an operator of order $0$ with geometric origin and $f$ a multiplication operator by a function. When $f$ is Hölder continuous, the spectral asymptotics is governed by singularities. We study precise spectral asymptotics through the computation of Dixmier traces; such computations have only been considered in less singular settings. Even though a Weyl law fails for these operators, and no pseudo-differential calculus is available, variations of Connes' residue trace theorem and related integral fo…
The integral in noncommutative geometry (NCG) involves a non-standard trace called a Dixmier trace. The geometric origins of this integral are well known. From a measure-theoretic view, however, the formulation contains several difficulties. We review results concerning the technical features of the integral in NCG and some outstanding problems in this area. The review is aimed for the general user of NCG.
Given a locally compact abelian group $G$, we give an explicit formula for the Dixmier--Douady invariant of the $C^*$-algebra of the groupoid extension associated to a Čech $2$-cocycle in the sheaf of germs of continuous $G$-valued functions. We then exploit the blow-up construction for groupoids to extend this to some more general central extensions of étale equivalence relations.
We extend the isospectral deformations of Connes, Landi and Dubois-Violette to the case of Riemannian spin manifolds carrying a proper action of the noncompact abelian group $R^l$. Under deformation by a torus action, a standard formula relates Dixmier traces of measurable operators to integrals of functions on the manifold. We show that this relation persists for actions of $R^l$, under mild restrictions on the geometry of the manifold which guarantee the Dixmier traceability of those operators.
We compute the Dixmier trace of Hankel operator on the weighted Bergman space. The same result of the Bergman space has been shown by Englis and Rochberg.
We obtain general theorems which enable the calculation of the Dixmier trace in terms of the asymptotics of the zeta function and of the heat operator in a general semi-finite von Neumann algebra. Our results have several applications. We deduce a formula for the Chern character of an odd ${\mathcal L}^{(1,\infty)}$-summable Breuer-Fredholm module in terms of a Hochschild 1-cycle. We explain how to derive a Wodzicki residue for pseudo-differential operators along the orbits of an ergodic $\IR^n$ action on a compact space $X$. Finally we give a short proof an index theorem of Lesch for generali…
In a previous paper we established Cwikel-type estimates on noncommutative tori and used them to get analogues in this setting of the Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum (CLR) and Lieb-Thirring inequalities for negative eigenvalues of fractional Schrödinger operators. In this paper, we focus on "curved" NC tori, where the role of the usual Laplacian is played by Laplace-Beltrami operators associated with arbitrary Riemannian metrics. The Cwikel-type estimates of our previous paper are extended to pseudodifferential operators and powers of Laplace-Beltrami operators. There are several applications of these e…
We give a formula for the Dixmier-Douady class of a continuous-trace groupoid crossed product that arises from an action of a locally trivial, proper, principal groupoid on a bundle of elementary $C^*$-algebras that satisfies Fell's condition.
We extend the noncommutative residue of M. Wodzicki on compactly supported classical pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ and generalise A. Connes' trace theorem, which states that the residue can be calculated using a singular trace on compact operators. Contrary to the role of the noncommutative residue for the classical pseudo-differential operators, a corollary is that the pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ do not have a `unique' trace; pseudo-differential operators can be non-measurable in Connes' sense. Other corollaries are given clarifying the role of Dixmier traces in …
The Dixmier-Douady invariant is the primary tool in the classification of continuous trace $C^*$-algebras. This expository note explores its properties from the perspective of classical algebraic topology.
In a noncommutative torus, effect of perturbation by inner derivation on the associated quantum stochastic process and geometric parameters like volume and scalar curvature have been studied. Cohomological calculations show that the above perturbation produces new spectral triples. Also for the Weyl C^*-algebra, the Laplacian associated with a natural stochastic process is obtained and associated volume form is calculated. Keywords: noncommutative torus, Laplacian, Dixmier trace, quantum stochastic process.
We introduce a new approach to traces on the principal ideal $\mathcal L_{1,\infty}$ generated by any positive compact operator whose singular value sequence is the harmonic sequence. Distinct from the well-known construction of J.~Dixmier, the new approach provides the explicit construction of every trace of every operator in $\mathcal L_{1,\infty}$ in terms of translation invariant functionals applied to a sequence of restricted sums of eigenvalues. The approach is based on a remarkable bijection between the set of all traces on $\mathcal L_{1,\infty}$ and the set of all translation invarian…
In this paper we prove the existence of conditional expectations in the noncommutative $L_p(M,Φ)$ spaces associated with center-valued traces. Moreover, their description is also provided. As an application of the obtained results, we establish the norm convergence of the martingales in noncommutative $L_p(M,Φ)$ spaces.
We prove the analogue of Weyl's law for a noncommutative Riemannian manifold, namely the noncommutative two torus $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$ equipped with a general translation invariant conformal structure and a Weyl conformal factor. This is achieved by studying the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues of the perturbed Laplacian on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$. We also prove the analogue of Connes' trace theorem by showing that the Dixmier trace and a noncommutative residue coincide on pseudodifferential operators of order -2 on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$.
We define the notion of von Neumann spectral triple and consider the associated index problem. We compute the analytic Chern-Connes character of such a von Neumann spectral triple and prove the corresponding local formula for its Hochschild class. This formula involves the Dixmier trace for $II_{\infty}$ von Neumann algebras. In the case of foliations, we identify this Dixmier trace with the corresponding measured Wodzicki residue.
To each real continuous function f there is an associated trace function on real symmetric matrices Tr f. The classical Klein lemma states that f is convex if and only if Tr f is convex. In this note we present an algebraic strengthening of this lemma for univariate polynomials f: Tr f is convex if and only if the noncommutative second directional derivative of f is a sum of hermitian squares and commutators in a free algebra. We also give a localized version of this result.
We introduce, in the dual Macaev ideal of compact operators of a Hilbert space, the spectral weight $ρ(L)$ of a positive, self-adjoint operator $L$ having discrete spectrum away from zero. We provide criteria for its measurability and unitarity of its Dixmier traces ($ρ(L)$ is then called spectral density) in terms of the growth of the spectral multiplicities of $L$ or in terms of the asymptotic continuity of the eigenvalue counting function $N_L$. Existence of meromorphic extensions and residues of the $ζ$-function $ζ_L$ of a spectral density are provided under summability conditions on spect…
In this paper we establish uniqueness theorems for the noncommutative residue and the canonical trace on pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative tori of arbitrary dimension. The former is the unique trace up to constant multiple on integer order pseudodifferential operators. The latter is the unique trace up to constant multiple on non-integer order pseudodifferential operators. This improves previous uniqueness results by Fathizadeh-Khalkhali, Fathizadeh-Wong, and Lévy-Neira-Paycha.
To any spectral triple (A,D,H) a dimension d is associated, in analogy with the Hausdorff dimension for metric spaces. Indeed d is the unique number, if any, such that |D|^-d has non trivial logarithmic Dixmier trace. Moreover, when d is finite non-zero, there always exists a singular trace which is finite nonzero on |D|^-d, giving rise to a noncommutative integration on A. Such results are applied to fractals in R, using Connes' spectral triple, and to limit fractals in R^n, a class which generalises self-similar fractals, using a new spectral triple. The noncommutative dimension or measure c…
We prove that for any (trace-preserving) conditional expectation $\mathcal E$ on a noncommutative $L_p$ with $p>2$, $Id-\mathcal E$ is a contraction on the positive cone $L_p^+$.
Given a C*-algebra A with a semicontinuous semifinite trace tau acting on the Hilbert space H, we define the family R of bounded Riemann measurable elements w.r.t. tau as a suitable closure, a la Dedekind, of A, in analogy with one of the classical characterizations of Riemann measurable functions, and show that R is a C*-algebra, and tau extends to a semicontinuous semifinite trace on R. Then, unbounded Riemann measurable operators are defined as the closed operators on H which are affiliated to A'' and can be approximated in measure by operators in R, in analogy with unbounded Riemann integr…
We investigate conditions on a graph $C^*$-algebra for the existence of a faithful semifinite trace. Using such a trace and the natural gauge action of the circle on the graph algebra, we construct a smooth $(1,\infty)$-summable semfinite spectral triple. The local index theorem allows us to compute the pairing with $K$-theory. This produces invariants in the $K$-theory of the fixed point algebra, and these are invariants for a finer structure than the isomorphism class of $C^*(E)$.
Using a global symbol calculus for pseudodifferential operators on tori, we build a canonical trace on classical pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative tori in terms of a canonical discrete sum on the underlying toroidal symbols. We characterise the canonical trace on operators on the noncommutative torus as well as its underlying canonical discrete sum on symbols of fixed (resp.\ any) non--integer order. On the grounds of this uniqueness result, we prove that in the commutative setup, this canonical trace on the noncommutative torus reduces to Kontsevich and Vishik's canonical trace w…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition on a positive compact operator $T$ for the existence of a singular trace (i.e. a trace vanishing on the finite rank operators) which takes a finite non-zero value on $T$. This generalizes previous results by Dixmier and Varga. We also give an explicit description of these traces and associated ergodic states on $\ell^\infty(\Bbb N)$ using tools of non standard analysis in an essential way.
We describe how noncommutative function algebras built from noncommutative functions in the sense of \cite{K-VV2014} may be studied as subalgebras of homogeneous $C^{*}$-algebras.
In this paper we prove a version of Connes' trace theorem for noncommutative tori of any dimension~$n\geq 2$. This allows us to recover and improve earlier versions of this result in dimension $n=2$ and $n=4$ by Fathizadeh-Khalkhali. We also recover the Connes integration formula for flat noncommutative tori of McDonald-Sukochev-Zanin. As a further application we prove a curved version of this integration formula in terms of the Laplace-Beltrami operator defined by an arbitrary Riemannian metric. For the class of so-called self-compatible Riemannian metrics (including the conformally flat metr…
We show that the noncommutative residue density, resp. the cut-off regularised integral are the only closed linear, resp. continuous closed linear forms on certain classes of symbols. This leads to alternative proofs of the uniqueness of the noncommutative residue, resp. the canonical trace as linear, resp. continuous linear forms on certain classes of classical pseudodifferential operators which vanish on brackets. The uniqueness of the canonical trace actually holds on classes of classical pseudodifferential with vanishing residue density which include non integer order operators in all dime…
This is a survey article of geometric properties of noncommutative symmetric spaces of measurable operators $E(\mathcal{M},τ)$, where $\mathcal{M}$ is a semifinite von Neumann algebra with a faithful, normal, semifinite trace $τ$, and $E$ is a symmetric function space. If $E\subset c_0$ is a symmetric sequence space then the analogous properties in the unitary matrix ideals $C_E$ are also presented. In the preliminaries we provide basic definitions and concepts illustrated by some examples and occasional proofs. In particular we list and discuss the properties of general singular value functio…
This paper has four main parts. In the first part, we construct a noncommutative residue for the hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds, that is, for the class of Heisenberg PsiDOs introduced by Beals-Greiner and Taylor. This noncommutative residue appears as the residual trace on integer order Heisenberg PsiDOs induced by the analytic extension of the usual trace to non-integer order Heisenberg PsiDOs. Moreover, it agrees with the integral of the density defined by the logarithmic singularity of the Schwartz kernel of the corresponding Heisenberg PsiDO. In addition, we show that this n…
We give complete descriptions of the tracial states on both the universal and reduced crossed products of a C*-dynamical system consisting of a unital C*-algebra and a discrete group. In particular, we also answer the question of when the tracial states are in canonical bijection with the invariant tracial states on the original C*-algebra. This generalizes the unique trace property for discrete groups. The analysis simplifies greatly in various cases, for example when the conjugacy classes of the original group are all finite, and in other cases gives previously known results, for example whe…
We revisit traces of holomorphic families of pseudodifferential operators on a closed manifold in view of geometric applications. We then transpose the corresponding analytic constructions to two different geometric frameworks; the noncommutative torus and Hilbert modules. These traces are meromorphic functions whose residues at the poles as well as the constant term of the Laurent expansion at zero (the latter when the family at zero is a differential operator) can be expressed in terms of Wodzicki residues and extended Wodzicki residues involving logarithmic operators. They are therefore loc…
Let p be prime. A noncommutative p-solenoid is the C*-algebra of Z[1/p] x Z[1/p] twisted by a multiplier of that group, where Z[1/p] is the additive subgroup of the field Q of rational numbers whose denominators are powers of p. In this paper, we survey our classification of these C*-algebras up to *-isomorphism in terms of the multipliers on Z[1/p], using techniques from noncommutative topology. Our work relies in part on writing these C*-algebras as direct limits of rotation algebras, i.e. twisted group C*-algebras of the group Z^2 thereby providing a mean for computing the K-theory of the n…
We introduce an abstract theory of the principal symbol mapping for pseudodifferential operators extending the results of a preceding paper and providing a simple algebraic approach to the theory of pseudodifferential operators in settings important in noncommutative geometry. We provide a variant of Connes' trace theorem which applies to certain noncommutative settings, with a minimum of technical preliminaries. Our approach allows us to consider in a operators with non-smooth symbols, and we demonstrate the power of our approach by extending Connes' trace theorem to operators with non-smooth…
Given a spectral triple (A,D,H), the functionals on A of the form a -> tau_omega(a|D|^(-t)) are studied, where tau_omega is a singular trace, and omega is a generalised limit. When tau_omega is the Dixmier trace, the unique exponent d giving rise possibly to a non-trivial functional is called Hausdorff dimension, and the corresponding functional the (d-dimensional) Hausdorff functional. It is shown that the Hausdorff dimension d coincides with the abscissa of convergence of the zeta function of |D|^(-1), and that the set of t's for which there exists a singular trace tau_omega giving rise to a…
This paper is comprised of two related parts. First we discuss which k-graph algebras have faithful gauge invariant traces, where the gauge action of $\T^k$ is the canonical one. We give a sufficient condition for the existence of such a trace, identify the C*-algebras of k-graphs satisfying this condition up to Morita equivalence, and compute their K-theory. For k-graphs with faithful gauge invariant trace, we construct a smooth $(k,\infty)$-summable semifinite spectral triple. We use the semifinite local index theorem to compute the pairing with K-theory. This numerical pairing can be obtain…
We study an extension of the sandwiched Rényi relative entropies for normal positive functionals on a von Neumann algebra, for parameter values $α\in [1/2,1)$. This work is intended as a continuation of [A. Jenčová, Ann. Henri Poincaré 19, 2513-2542, 2018], where the values $α>1$ were studied. We use the Araki-Masuda divergences of [Berta et al., Ann. Henri Poincaré 9, 1843-1867, 2018] and treat them in the framework of Kosaki's noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. Using the variational formula, recently obtained by F. Hiai, for $α\in [1/2,1)$, we prove the data processing inequality with respect to p…
Motivated by the local formulae for asymptotic expansion of heat kernels in spectral geometry, we propose a definition of Ricci curvature in noncommutative settings. The Ricci operator of an oriented closed Riemannian manifold can be realized as a spectral functional, namely the functional defined by the zeta function of the full Laplacian of the de Rham complex, localized by smooth endomorphisms of the cotangent bundle and their trace. We use this formulation to introduce the Ricci functional in a noncommutative setting and in particular for curved noncommutative tori. This Ricci functional u…
