We obtain general theorems which enable the calculation of the Dixmier trace in terms of the asymptotics of the zeta function and of the trace of the heat semigroup. We prove our results in a general semi-finite von Neumann algebra. We find for p>1 that the asymptotics of the zeta function determines an ideal strictly larger than {\mathcal L}^{p,\infty} on which the Dixmier trace may be defined. We also establish stronger versions of other results on Dixmier traces and zeta functions.
In the present paper we prove that the classes of Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces differ even on the Dixmier ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$. We construct a Marcinkiewicz space $\mathcal M_ψ$ and a positive operator $T\in \mathcal M_ψ$ which is Connes-Dixmier measurable but which is not Dixmier measurable.
We present an ab initio approach to integration theory for nonunital spectral triples. This is done without reference to local units and in the full generality of semifinite noncommutative geometry. The main result is an equality between the Dixmier trace and generalised residue of the zeta function and heat kernel of suitable operators. We also examine definitions for integrable bounded elements of a spectral triple based on zeta function, heat kernel and Dixmier trace techniques. We show that zeta functions and heat kernels yield equivalent notions of integrability, which imply Dixmier trace…
We define a new class of singular positive traces on the ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$ of $B(H)$ generated by exponentiation invariant generalized limits. We prove that this new class is strictly contained in the class of all Dixmier traces. We also prove a Lidskii-type formula for this class of traces.
We study the relationships between Dixmier traces, zeta-functions and traces of heat semigroups beyond the dual of the Macaev ideal and in the general context of semifinite von Neumann algebras. We show that the correct framework for this investigation is that of operator Lorentz spaces possessing an extrapolation description. We demonstrate the applicability of our results to Hörmander-Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. In that context, we prove that the Dixmier trace of a pseudo-differential operator coincide with the `Dixmier integral' of its symbol.
This paper introduces a new approach to the non-normal Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces (introduced by Dixmier and adapted to non-commutative geometry by Connes) on a general Marcinkiewicz space associated with an arbitrary semifinite von Neumann algebra. By unifying various constructions, and translating the situation of Dixmier traces into the theory of singular symmetric functionals on Marcinkiewicz function/operator spaces, we obtain the results (i) and (ii) below. The results are stated here, for the reader, in terms of the ideal $L^{(1,\infty)}$ of compact operators whose partial sums o…
In this paper we provide sharp results for the Dixmier traceability of discrete pseudo-differential operators on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^n)$. In this setting, we introduce a suitable notion of a class of classical symbols which provide a class of Dixmier traceable discrete pseudo-differential operators. We also present a formula for the Dixmier trace of a Dixmier traceable discrete pseudo-differential operator by using the Connes equivalence between the Wodzicki residue and the Dixmier trace.
We establish several analogues of the classical Lidskii Theorem for some special classes of singular traces (Dixmier traces and Connes-Dixmier traces) used in noncommutative geometry.
We extend Dixmier's construction of singular traces (see \cite{Dixmier}) to arbitrary fully symmetric operator ideals. In fact, we show that the set of Dixmier traces is weak$^*$ dense in the set of all fully symmetric traces (that is, those traces which respect Hardy-Littlewood submajorization). Our results complement and extend earlier work of Wodzicki \cite{Wodzicki}.
This is a survey of some recent advances in the theory of singular traces in which the authors have played some part and which were inspired by questions raised by the book of Alain Connes (Noncommutative Geometry, Academic Press 1994). There are some original proofs and ideas but most of the results have appeared elsewhere. Detailed information on the contents is contained in the Introduction.
We prove perturbation results for traces on normed ideals in semifinite von Neumann algebra factors. This includes the case of Dixmier traces. In particular, we establish existence of spectral shift measures with initial operators being dissipative or bounded, and show that these measures can have singular components in the case of Dixmier traces. We also establish a linearization formula for a Dixmier trace applied to perturbed operator functions, a result that does not typically hold for normal traces.
We develop the theory of modulated operators in general principal ideals of compact operators. For Laplacian modulated operators we establish Connes' trace formula in its local Euclidean model and a global version thereof. It expresses Dixmier traces in terms of the vector-valued Wodzicki residue. We demonstrate the applicability of our main results in the context of log-classical pseudo-differential operators, studied by Lesch, and a class of operators naturally appearing in noncommutative geometry.
Given a locally compact abelian group $G$, we give an explicit formula for the Dixmier--Douady invariant of the $C^*$-algebra of the groupoid extension associated to a Čech $2$-cocycle in the sheaf of germs of continuous $G$-valued functions. We then exploit the blow-up construction for groupoids to extend this to some more general central extensions of étale equivalence relations.
We consider the spectral behavior and noncommutative geometry of commutators $[P,f]$, where $P$ is an operator of order $0$ with geometric origin and $f$ a multiplication operator by a function. When $f$ is Hölder continuous, the spectral asymptotics is governed by singularities. We study precise spectral asymptotics through the computation of Dixmier traces; such computations have only been considered in less singular settings. Even though a Weyl law fails for these operators, and no pseudo-differential calculus is available, variations of Connes' residue trace theorem and related integral fo…
We extend the isospectral deformations of Connes, Landi and Dubois-Violette to the case of Riemannian spin manifolds carrying a proper action of the noncompact abelian group $R^l$. Under deformation by a torus action, a standard formula relates Dixmier traces of measurable operators to integrals of functions on the manifold. We show that this relation persists for actions of $R^l$, under mild restrictions on the geometry of the manifold which guarantee the Dixmier traceability of those operators.
We obtain general theorems which enable the calculation of the Dixmier trace in terms of the asymptotics of the zeta function and of the heat operator in a general semi-finite von Neumann algebra. Our results have several applications. We deduce a formula for the Chern character of an odd ${\mathcal L}^{(1,\infty)}$-summable Breuer-Fredholm module in terms of a Hochschild 1-cycle. We explain how to derive a Wodzicki residue for pseudo-differential operators along the orbits of an ergodic $\IR^n$ action on a compact space $X$. Finally we give a short proof an index theorem of Lesch for generali…
We compute the Dixmier trace of Hankel operator on the weighted Bergman space. The same result of the Bergman space has been shown by Englis and Rochberg.
We continue the study of the relationship between Dixmier traces and noncommutative residues initiated by A. Connes. The utility of the residue approach to Dixmier traces is shown by a characterisation of the noncommutative integral in Connes' noncommutative geometry (for a wide class of Dixmier traces) as a generalised limit of vector states associated to the eigenvectors of a compact operator (or an unbounded operator with compact resolvent), i.e. as a generalised quantum limit. Using the characterisation, a criteria involving the eigenvectors of a compact operator and the projections of a v…
We give a formula for the Dixmier-Douady class of a continuous-trace groupoid crossed product that arises from an action of a locally trivial, proper, principal groupoid on a bundle of elementary $C^*$-algebras that satisfies Fell's condition.
The Dixmier-Douady invariant is the primary tool in the classification of continuous trace $C^*$-algebras. This expository note explores its properties from the perspective of classical algebraic topology.
We introduce a new approach to traces on the principal ideal $\mathcal L_{1,\infty}$ generated by any positive compact operator whose singular value sequence is the harmonic sequence. Distinct from the well-known construction of J.~Dixmier, the new approach provides the explicit construction of every trace of every operator in $\mathcal L_{1,\infty}$ in terms of translation invariant functionals applied to a sequence of restricted sums of eigenvalues. The approach is based on a remarkable bijection between the set of all traces on $\mathcal L_{1,\infty}$ and the set of all translation invarian…
In a previous paper we established Cwikel-type estimates on noncommutative tori and used them to get analogues in this setting of the Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum (CLR) and Lieb-Thirring inequalities for negative eigenvalues of fractional Schrödinger operators. In this paper, we focus on "curved" NC tori, where the role of the usual Laplacian is played by Laplace-Beltrami operators associated with arbitrary Riemannian metrics. The Cwikel-type estimates of our previous paper are extended to pseudodifferential operators and powers of Laplace-Beltrami operators. There are several applications of these e…
We define the notion of von Neumann spectral triple and consider the associated index problem. We compute the analytic Chern-Connes character of such a von Neumann spectral triple and prove the corresponding local formula for its Hochschild class. This formula involves the Dixmier trace for $II_{\infty}$ von Neumann algebras. In the case of foliations, we identify this Dixmier trace with the corresponding measured Wodzicki residue.
Heat-invariants are a class of spectral invariants of Laplace-type operators on compact Riemannian manifolds that contain information about the geometry of the manifold, e.g., the metric and connection. Since Brownian motion solves the heat equation, these invariants can be obtained studying Brownian motion on manifolds. In this article, we consider Brownian motion on the Toeplitz algebra, discrete Heisenberg group algebras, and non-commutative tori to define Laplace-type operators and heat-semigroups on these C*-bialgebras. We show that their traces can be $ζ$-regularized and compute "heat-tr…
Starting with Ihara's work in 1968, there has been a growing interest in the study of zeta functions of finite graphs, by Sunada, Hashimoto, Bass, Stark and Terras, Mizuno and Sato, to name just a few authors. Then, Clair and Mokhtari-Sharghi have studied zeta functions for infinite graphs acted upon by a discrete group of automorphisms. The main formula in all these treatments establishes a connection between the zeta function, originally defined as an infinite product, and the Laplacian of the graph. In this article, we consider a different class of infinite graphs. They are fractal graphs, …
We present a systematic study of asymptotic behavior of (generalised) $ζ-$functions and heat kernels used in noncommutative geometry and clarify their connections with Dixmier traces. We strengthen and complete a number of results from the recent literature and answer (in the affirmative) the question raised by M. Benameur and T. Fack \cite{BF}.
We prove the analogue of Weyl's law for a noncommutative Riemannian manifold, namely the noncommutative two torus $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$ equipped with a general translation invariant conformal structure and a Weyl conformal factor. This is achieved by studying the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues of the perturbed Laplacian on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$. We also prove the analogue of Connes' trace theorem by showing that the Dixmier trace and a noncommutative residue coincide on pseudodifferential operators of order -2 on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$.
In his approach to analytic number theory C. Deninger has suggested that to the Riemann zeta function $\hatζ(s)$ (resp. the zeta function $ζ_Y(s)$ of a smooth projective curve $Y$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, $q=p^f$)) one could possibly associate a foliated Riemannian laminated space $(S_{\mathbb{Q}}, \mathcal{F}, g, ϕ^t)$ (resp. $(S_Y, \mathcal{F}, g, ϕ^t)$) endowed with an action of a flow $ϕ^t$ whose primitive compact orbits should correspond to the primes of $\mathbb{Q}$ (resp. $Y$). The existence of such a foliated space and flow $ϕ^t$ is still unknown except when $Y$ is an ellipt…
