We continue the study of the relationship between Dixmier traces and noncommutative residues initiated by A. Connes. The utility of the residue approach to Dixmier traces is shown by a characterisation of the noncommutative integral in Connes' noncommutative geometry (for a wide class of Dixmier traces) as a generalised limit of vector states associated to the eigenvectors of a compact operator (or an unbounded operator with compact resolvent), i.e. as a generalised quantum limit. Using the characterisation, a criteria involving the eigenvectors of a compact operator and the projections of a von Neumann subalgebra of bounded operators is given so that the noncommutative integral associated to the compact operator is normal, i.e. satisfies a monotone convergence theorem, for the von Neumann subalgebra.
We extend the noncommutative residue of M. Wodzicki on compactly supported classical pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ and generalise A. Connes' trace theorem, which states that the residue can be calculated using a singular trace on compact operators. Contrary to the role of the noncommutative residue for the classical pseudo-differential operators, a corollary is that the pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ do not have a `unique' trace; pseudo-differential operators can be non-measurable in Connes' sense. Other corollaries are given clarifying the role of Dixmier traces in …
In this paper we establish uniqueness theorems for the noncommutative residue and the canonical trace on pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative tori of arbitrary dimension. The former is the unique trace up to constant multiple on integer order pseudodifferential operators. The latter is the unique trace up to constant multiple on non-integer order pseudodifferential operators. This improves previous uniqueness results by Fathizadeh-Khalkhali, Fathizadeh-Wong, and Lévy-Neira-Paycha.
We define a noncommutative residue for classical Euclidean pseudodifferential operators on a torus of arbitrary dimension. We prove that, up to multiplication by a constant, it is the unique trace on the algebra of classical pseudodifferential operators modulo infinitely smoothing operators. In the case of the two torus, we show that the noncommutative residue is the semiclassical limit of a noncommutative residue defined on classical pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative two tori.
Using a global symbol calculus for pseudodifferential operators on tori, we build a canonical trace on classical pseudodifferential operators on noncommutative tori in terms of a canonical discrete sum on the underlying toroidal symbols. We characterise the canonical trace on operators on the noncommutative torus as well as its underlying canonical discrete sum on symbols of fixed (resp.\ any) non--integer order. On the grounds of this uniqueness result, we prove that in the commutative setup, this canonical trace on the noncommutative torus reduces to Kontsevich and Vishik's canonical trace w…
We show that the noncommutative residue density, resp. the cut-off regularised integral are the only closed linear, resp. continuous closed linear forms on certain classes of symbols. This leads to alternative proofs of the uniqueness of the noncommutative residue, resp. the canonical trace as linear, resp. continuous linear forms on certain classes of classical pseudodifferential operators which vanish on brackets. The uniqueness of the canonical trace actually holds on classes of classical pseudodifferential with vanishing residue density which include non integer order operators in all dime…
This paper has four main parts. In the first part, we construct a noncommutative residue for the hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds, that is, for the class of Heisenberg PsiDOs introduced by Beals-Greiner and Taylor. This noncommutative residue appears as the residual trace on integer order Heisenberg PsiDOs induced by the analytic extension of the usual trace to non-integer order Heisenberg PsiDOs. Moreover, it agrees with the integral of the density defined by the logarithmic singularity of the Schwartz kernel of the corresponding Heisenberg PsiDO. In addition, we show that this n…
In this paper we study the spectral asymmetry of (possibly nonselfadjoint) elliptic PsiDO's in terms of the difference of zeta functions coming from different cuttings. Refining previous formulas of Wodzicki in the case of odd class elliptic PsiDO's, our main results have several consequence concerning the local independence with respect to the cutting, the regularity at integer points of eta functions and a geometric expression for the spectral asymmetry of Dirac operators which, in particular, yields a new spectral interpretation of the Einstein-Hilbert action in gravity.
We revisit traces of holomorphic families of pseudodifferential operators on a closed manifold in view of geometric applications. We then transpose the corresponding analytic constructions to two different geometric frameworks; the noncommutative torus and Hilbert modules. These traces are meromorphic functions whose residues at the poles as well as the constant term of the Laurent expansion at zero (the latter when the family at zero is a differential operator) can be expressed in terms of Wodzicki residues and extended Wodzicki residues involving logarithmic operators. They are therefore loc…
We present an ab initio approach to integration theory for nonunital spectral triples. This is done without reference to local units and in the full generality of semifinite noncommutative geometry. The main result is an equality between the Dixmier trace and generalised residue of the zeta function and heat kernel of suitable operators. We also examine definitions for integrable bounded elements of a spectral triple based on zeta function, heat kernel and Dixmier trace techniques. We show that zeta functions and heat kernels yield equivalent notions of integrability, which imply Dixmier trace…
We develop the theory of modulated operators in general principal ideals of compact operators. For Laplacian modulated operators we establish Connes' trace formula in its local Euclidean model and a global version thereof. It expresses Dixmier traces in terms of the vector-valued Wodzicki residue. We demonstrate the applicability of our main results in the context of log-classical pseudo-differential operators, studied by Lesch, and a class of operators naturally appearing in noncommutative geometry.
The residue cocycle associated to a suitable spectral triple is the key component of the Connes-Moscovici local index theorem in noncommutative geometry. We review the relationship between the residue cocycle and heat kernel asymptotics. We use a modified version of the Getzler calculus to compute the cocycle for a class of Dirac-type operators introduced by Bismut, obtained by deforming a Dirac operator by a closed 3-form B. We also compute the cocycle in low-dimensions when the 3-form B is not closed.
We prove the analogue of Weyl's law for a noncommutative Riemannian manifold, namely the noncommutative two torus $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$ equipped with a general translation invariant conformal structure and a Weyl conformal factor. This is achieved by studying the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues of the perturbed Laplacian on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$. We also prove the analogue of Connes' trace theorem by showing that the Dixmier trace and a noncommutative residue coincide on pseudodifferential operators of order -2 on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$.
Convolution semigroups of states on a quantum group form the natural noncommutative analogue of convolution semigroups of probability measures on a locally compact group. Here we initiate a theory of weakly continuous convolution semigroups of functionals on a C*-bialgebra, the noncommutative counterpart of locally compact semigroup. On locally compact quantum groups we obtain a bijective correspondence between such convolution semigroups and a class of C_0-semigroups of maps which we characterise. On C*-bialgebras of discrete type we show that all weakly continuous convolution semigroups of s…
The subject of this paper is the study of convolution semigroups of states on a locally compact quantum group, generalising classical families of distributions of a Lévy process on a locally compact group. In particular a definitive one-to-one correspondence between symmetric convolution semigroups of states and noncommutative Dirichlet forms satisfying the natural translation invariance property is established, extending earlier partial results and providing a powerful tool to analyse such semigroups. This is then applied to provide new characterisations of the Haagerup Property and Property …
We introduce, in the dual Macaev ideal of compact operators of a Hilbert space, the spectral weight $ρ(L)$ of a positive, self-adjoint operator $L$ having discrete spectrum away from zero. We provide criteria for its measurability and unitarity of its Dixmier traces ($ρ(L)$ is then called spectral density) in terms of the growth of the spectral multiplicities of $L$ or in terms of the asymptotic continuity of the eigenvalue counting function $N_L$. Existence of meromorphic extensions and residues of the $ζ$-function $ζ_L$ of a spectral density are provided under summability conditions on spect…
A fundamental tool in noncommutative geometry is Connes' character formula. This formula is used in an essential way in the applications of noncommutative geometry to index theory and to the spectral characterisation of manifolds. A non-compact space is modelled in noncommutative geometry by a non-unital spectral triple. Our aim is to establish the Connes character formula for non-unital spectral triples. This is significantly more difficult than in the unital case and we achieve it with the use of recently developed double operator integration techniques. Previously, only partial extensions o…
We consider the spectral behavior and noncommutative geometry of commutators $[P,f]$, where $P$ is an operator of order $0$ with geometric origin and $f$ a multiplication operator by a function. When $f$ is Hölder continuous, the spectral asymptotics is governed by singularities. We study precise spectral asymptotics through the computation of Dixmier traces; such computations have only been considered in less singular settings. Even though a Weyl law fails for these operators, and no pseudo-differential calculus is available, variations of Connes' residue trace theorem and related integral fo…
This paper is based on talks delivered in summer 2008 at the Conference on Motives, QFT and Pseudodifferential Operators in Boston, and at the Trimester programme Geometry and Physics, Hausdorff Institute for Mathematics in Bonn The paper surveys the pseudodifferential calculus with parameter, resolvent expansions, Dixmier trace, noncommutative residue, Kontsevich-Vishik canonical trace as well some aspects of regularized integrals on spaces of symbols.
Observing that the logarithm of a product of two elliptic operators differs from the sum of the logarithms by a finite sum of operator brackets, we infer that regularised traces of this difference are local as finite sums of noncommutative residues. From an explicit local formula for such regularised traces, we derive an explicit local formula for the multiplicative anomaly of zeta-determinants which sheds light on its locality and yields back previously known results.
