We obtain general theorems which enable the calculation of the Dixmier trace in terms of the asymptotics of the zeta function and of the heat operator in a general semi-finite von Neumann algebra. Our results have several applications. We deduce a formula for the Chern character of an odd ${\mathcal L}^{(1,\infty)}$-summable Breuer-Fredholm module in terms of a Hochschild 1-cycle. We explain how to derive a Wodzicki residue for pseudo-differential operators along the orbits of an ergodic $\IR^n$ action on a compact space $X$. Finally we give a short proof an index theorem of Lesch for generalised Toeplitz operators.
We establish several analogues of the classical Lidskii Theorem for some special classes of singular traces (Dixmier traces and Connes-Dixmier traces) used in noncommutative geometry.
We extend Dixmier's construction of singular traces (see \cite{Dixmier}) to arbitrary fully symmetric operator ideals. In fact, we show that the set of Dixmier traces is weak$^*$ dense in the set of all fully symmetric traces (that is, those traces which respect Hardy-Littlewood submajorization). Our results complement and extend earlier work of Wodzicki \cite{Wodzicki}.
In the present paper we prove that the classes of Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces differ even on the Dixmier ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$. We construct a Marcinkiewicz space $\mathcal M_ψ$ and a positive operator $T\in \mathcal M_ψ$ which is Connes-Dixmier measurable but which is not Dixmier measurable.
In this paper we provide sharp results for the Dixmier traceability of discrete pseudo-differential operators on $\ell^2(\mathbb{Z}^n)$. In this setting, we introduce a suitable notion of a class of classical symbols which provide a class of Dixmier traceable discrete pseudo-differential operators. We also present a formula for the Dixmier trace of a Dixmier traceable discrete pseudo-differential operator by using the Connes equivalence between the Wodzicki residue and the Dixmier trace.
We obtain general theorems which enable the calculation of the Dixmier trace in terms of the asymptotics of the zeta function and of the trace of the heat semigroup. We prove our results in a general semi-finite von Neumann algebra. We find for p>1 that the asymptotics of the zeta function determines an ideal strictly larger than {\mathcal L}^{p,\infty} on which the Dixmier trace may be defined. We also establish stronger versions of other results on Dixmier traces and zeta functions.
We define a new class of singular positive traces on the ideal $\mathcal M_{1,\infty}$ of $B(H)$ generated by exponentiation invariant generalized limits. We prove that this new class is strictly contained in the class of all Dixmier traces. We also prove a Lidskii-type formula for this class of traces.
We study the relationships between Dixmier traces, zeta-functions and traces of heat semigroups beyond the dual of the Macaev ideal and in the general context of semifinite von Neumann algebras. We show that the correct framework for this investigation is that of operator Lorentz spaces possessing an extrapolation description. We demonstrate the applicability of our results to Hörmander-Weyl pseudo-differential calculus. In that context, we prove that the Dixmier trace of a pseudo-differential operator coincide with the `Dixmier integral' of its symbol.
Given a locally compact abelian group $G$, we give an explicit formula for the Dixmier--Douady invariant of the $C^*$-algebra of the groupoid extension associated to a Čech $2$-cocycle in the sheaf of germs of continuous $G$-valued functions. We then exploit the blow-up construction for groupoids to extend this to some more general central extensions of étale equivalence relations.
We extend the isospectral deformations of Connes, Landi and Dubois-Violette to the case of Riemannian spin manifolds carrying a proper action of the noncompact abelian group $R^l$. Under deformation by a torus action, a standard formula relates Dixmier traces of measurable operators to integrals of functions on the manifold. We show that this relation persists for actions of $R^l$, under mild restrictions on the geometry of the manifold which guarantee the Dixmier traceability of those operators.
This paper introduces a new approach to the non-normal Dixmier and Connes-Dixmier traces (introduced by Dixmier and adapted to non-commutative geometry by Connes) on a general Marcinkiewicz space associated with an arbitrary semifinite von Neumann algebra. By unifying various constructions, and translating the situation of Dixmier traces into the theory of singular symmetric functionals on Marcinkiewicz function/operator spaces, we obtain the results (i) and (ii) below. The results are stated here, for the reader, in terms of the ideal $L^{(1,\infty)}$ of compact operators whose partial sums o…
We develop the theory of modulated operators in general principal ideals of compact operators. For Laplacian modulated operators we establish Connes' trace formula in its local Euclidean model and a global version thereof. It expresses Dixmier traces in terms of the vector-valued Wodzicki residue. We demonstrate the applicability of our main results in the context of log-classical pseudo-differential operators, studied by Lesch, and a class of operators naturally appearing in noncommutative geometry.
We compute the Dixmier trace of Hankel operator on the weighted Bergman space. The same result of the Bergman space has been shown by Englis and Rochberg.
This is a survey of some recent advances in the theory of singular traces in which the authors have played some part and which were inspired by questions raised by the book of Alain Connes (Noncommutative Geometry, Academic Press 1994). There are some original proofs and ideas but most of the results have appeared elsewhere. Detailed information on the contents is contained in the Introduction.
We give a formula for the Dixmier-Douady class of a continuous-trace groupoid crossed product that arises from an action of a locally trivial, proper, principal groupoid on a bundle of elementary $C^*$-algebras that satisfies Fell's condition.
We prove perturbation results for traces on normed ideals in semifinite von Neumann algebra factors. This includes the case of Dixmier traces. In particular, we establish existence of spectral shift measures with initial operators being dissipative or bounded, and show that these measures can have singular components in the case of Dixmier traces. We also establish a linearization formula for a Dixmier trace applied to perturbed operator functions, a result that does not typically hold for normal traces.
We define the notion of von Neumann spectral triple and consider the associated index problem. We compute the analytic Chern-Connes character of such a von Neumann spectral triple and prove the corresponding local formula for its Hochschild class. This formula involves the Dixmier trace for $II_{\infty}$ von Neumann algebras. In the case of foliations, we identify this Dixmier trace with the corresponding measured Wodzicki residue.
We consider the spectral behavior and noncommutative geometry of commutators $[P,f]$, where $P$ is an operator of order $0$ with geometric origin and $f$ a multiplication operator by a function. When $f$ is Hölder continuous, the spectral asymptotics is governed by singularities. We study precise spectral asymptotics through the computation of Dixmier traces; such computations have only been considered in less singular settings. Even though a Weyl law fails for these operators, and no pseudo-differential calculus is available, variations of Connes' residue trace theorem and related integral fo…
The Dixmier-Douady invariant is the primary tool in the classification of continuous trace $C^*$-algebras. This expository note explores its properties from the perspective of classical algebraic topology.
We present an ab initio approach to integration theory for nonunital spectral triples. This is done without reference to local units and in the full generality of semifinite noncommutative geometry. The main result is an equality between the Dixmier trace and generalised residue of the zeta function and heat kernel of suitable operators. We also examine definitions for integrable bounded elements of a spectral triple based on zeta function, heat kernel and Dixmier trace techniques. We show that zeta functions and heat kernels yield equivalent notions of integrability, which imply Dixmier trace…
We introduce a new approach to traces on the principal ideal $\mathcal L_{1,\infty}$ generated by any positive compact operator whose singular value sequence is the harmonic sequence. Distinct from the well-known construction of J.~Dixmier, the new approach provides the explicit construction of every trace of every operator in $\mathcal L_{1,\infty}$ in terms of translation invariant functionals applied to a sequence of restricted sums of eigenvalues. The approach is based on a remarkable bijection between the set of all traces on $\mathcal L_{1,\infty}$ and the set of all translation invarian…
In a previous paper we established Cwikel-type estimates on noncommutative tori and used them to get analogues in this setting of the Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum (CLR) and Lieb-Thirring inequalities for negative eigenvalues of fractional Schrödinger operators. In this paper, we focus on "curved" NC tori, where the role of the usual Laplacian is played by Laplace-Beltrami operators associated with arbitrary Riemannian metrics. The Cwikel-type estimates of our previous paper are extended to pseudodifferential operators and powers of Laplace-Beltrami operators. There are several applications of these e…
We continue the study of the relationship between Dixmier traces and noncommutative residues initiated by A. Connes. The utility of the residue approach to Dixmier traces is shown by a characterisation of the noncommutative integral in Connes' noncommutative geometry (for a wide class of Dixmier traces) as a generalised limit of vector states associated to the eigenvectors of a compact operator (or an unbounded operator with compact resolvent), i.e. as a generalised quantum limit. Using the characterisation, a criteria involving the eigenvectors of a compact operator and the projections of a v…
We study variants of the Dixmier property that apply to elements of a unital C*-algebra, rather than to the C*-algebra itself. By a Dixmier element in a C*-algebra we understand one that can be averaged into a central element by means of a sequence of unitary mixing operators. Examples include all self-commutators and all quasinilpotent elements. We do a parallel study of an element-wise version of weak centrality, where the averaging to the centre is done using unital completely positive elementary operators (as in Magajna's characterization of weak centrality). We also obtain complete descri…
We give a necessary and sufficient condition on a positive compact operator $T$ for the existence of a singular trace (i.e. a trace vanishing on the finite rank operators) which takes a finite non-zero value on $T$. This generalizes previous results by Dixmier and Varga. We also give an explicit description of these traces and associated ergodic states on $\ell^\infty(\Bbb N)$ using tools of non standard analysis in an essential way.
We extend the noncommutative residue of M. Wodzicki on compactly supported classical pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ and generalise A. Connes' trace theorem, which states that the residue can be calculated using a singular trace on compact operators. Contrary to the role of the noncommutative residue for the classical pseudo-differential operators, a corollary is that the pseudo-differential operators of order $-d$ do not have a `unique' trace; pseudo-differential operators can be non-measurable in Connes' sense. Other corollaries are given clarifying the role of Dixmier traces in …
We prove the analogue of Weyl's law for a noncommutative Riemannian manifold, namely the noncommutative two torus $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$ equipped with a general translation invariant conformal structure and a Weyl conformal factor. This is achieved by studying the asymptotic distribution of the eigenvalues of the perturbed Laplacian on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$. We also prove the analogue of Connes' trace theorem by showing that the Dixmier trace and a noncommutative residue coincide on pseudodifferential operators of order -2 on $\mathbb{T}_θ^2$.
This paper is based on talks delivered in summer 2008 at the Conference on Motives, QFT and Pseudodifferential Operators in Boston, and at the Trimester programme Geometry and Physics, Hausdorff Institute for Mathematics in Bonn The paper surveys the pseudodifferential calculus with parameter, resolvent expansions, Dixmier trace, noncommutative residue, Kontsevich-Vishik canonical trace as well some aspects of regularized integrals on spaces of symbols.
We construct KMS-states from $\mathrm{Li}_1$-summable semifinite spectral triples and show that in several important examples the construction coincides with well-known direct constructions of KMS-states for naturally defined flows. Under further summability assumptions the constructed KMS-state can be computed in terms of Dixmier traces. For closed manifolds, we recover the ordinary Lebesgue integral. For Cuntz-Pimsner algebras with their gauge flow, the construction produces KMS-states from traces on the coefficient algebra and recovers the Laca-Neshveyev correspondence. For a discrete group…
Given a spectral triple (A,D,H), the functionals on A of the form a -> tau_omega(a|D|^(-t)) are studied, where tau_omega is a singular trace, and omega is a generalised limit. When tau_omega is the Dixmier trace, the unique exponent d giving rise possibly to a non-trivial functional is called Hausdorff dimension, and the corresponding functional the (d-dimensional) Hausdorff functional. It is shown that the Hausdorff dimension d coincides with the abscissa of convergence of the zeta function of |D|^(-1), and that the set of t's for which there exists a singular trace tau_omega giving rise to a…
We introduce, in the dual Macaev ideal of compact operators of a Hilbert space, the spectral weight $ρ(L)$ of a positive, self-adjoint operator $L$ having discrete spectrum away from zero. We provide criteria for its measurability and unitarity of its Dixmier traces ($ρ(L)$ is then called spectral density) in terms of the growth of the spectral multiplicities of $L$ or in terms of the asymptotic continuity of the eigenvalue counting function $N_L$. Existence of meromorphic extensions and residues of the $ζ$-function $ζ_L$ of a spectral density are provided under summability conditions on spect…
In this paper, we present a new way to associate a finitely summable spectral triple to a higher-rank graph $Λ$, via the infinite path space $Λ^\infty$ of $Λ$. Moreover, we prove that this spectral triple has a close connection to the wavelet decomposition of $Λ^\infty$ which was introduced by Farsi, Gillaspy, Kang, and Packer in 2015. We first introduce the concept of stationary $k$-Bratteli diagrams, in order to associate a family of ultrametric Cantor sets, and their associated Pearson-Bellissard spectral triples, to a finite, strongly connected higher-rank graph $Λ$. We then study the zeta…
We construct spectral triples and, in particular, Dirac operators, for the algebra of continuous functions on certain compact metric spaces. The triples are countable sums of triples where each summand is based on a curve in the space. Several fractals, like a finitely summable infinite tree and the Sierpinski gasket, fit naturally within our framework. In these cases, we show that our spectral triples do describe the geodesic distance and the Minkowski dimension as well as, more generally, the complex fractal dimensions of the space. Furthermore, in the case of the Sierpinski gasket, the asso…
To any spectral triple (A,D,H) a dimension d is associated, in analogy with the Hausdorff dimension for metric spaces. Indeed d is the unique number, if any, such that |D|^-d has non trivial logarithmic Dixmier trace. Moreover, when d is finite non-zero, there always exists a singular trace which is finite nonzero on |D|^-d, giving rise to a noncommutative integration on A. Such results are applied to fractals in R, using Connes' spectral triple, and to limit fractals in R^n, a class which generalises self-similar fractals, using a new spectral triple. The noncommutative dimension or measure c…
In Alain Connes noncommutative geometry, the question of the existence of a non-trivial integral can be described in terms of the singular traceability of the compact operator |D|^(-d), D being the Dirac operator, namely of the existence of a finite non-trivial singular trace on the ideal generated by |D|^(-d). A condition on the non triviality of the Dixmier logarithmic trace on the above mentioned ideal has been given by Connes in terms of the cohomological dimension of the Chern character of the phase of D. In this paper we show that, under suitable regularity conditions on the eigenvalue s…
Among ideals of compact operators on a Hilbert space we identify a subclass of those closed with respect to the logarithmic submajorization. Within this subclass, we answer the questions asked by Pietsch \cite{Pietsch_nachrichten} and by Dykema, Figiel, Weiss and Wodzicki \cite{DFWW}. In the first case, we show that Lidskii-type formulae hold for every trace on such ideal. In the second case, we provide the description of the commutator subspace associated with a given ideal. Finally, we prove that a positive trace on an arbitrary ideal is spectral if and only if it is monotone with respect to…
In the abstract pseudodifferential setup of Connes and Moscovici, we prove a general formula for the discrepancies of zeta-regularised traces associated with certain spectral triples, and we introduce a canonical trace on operators, whose order lies outside (minus) the dimension spectrum of the spectral triple.
Let $\M$ be a type ${\rm II_1}$ factor and let $τ$ be the faithful normal tracial state on $\M$. In this paper, we prove that given finite elements $X_1,\cdots X_n \in \M$, there is a finite decomposition of the identity into $N \in \NNN$ mutually orthogonal nonzero projections $E_j\in\M$, $I=\sum_{j=1}^NE_j$, such that $E_jX_iE_j=τ(X_i) E_j$ for all $j=1,\cdots,N$ and $i=1,\cdots,n$. Equivalently, there is a unitary operator $U \in \M$ such that $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{j=0}^{N-1}{U^*}^jX_iU^j=τ(X_i)I$ for $i=1,\cdots,n$. This result is a stronger version of Dixmier's averaging theorem for type ${\r…
We give a new definition of dimension spectrum for non-regular spectral triples and compute the exact (i.e. non only the asymptotics) heat-trace of standard Podles spheres $S^2_q$ for $0<q<1$, study its behavior when $q\to 1$ and fully compute its exact spectral action for an explicit class of cut-off functions.
