The aim of this paper is to generalize the theory of nonlinear connections of Grifone ([3] and [4]). We adopt the point of view of Anona [1] and continue developing the approach established by the first author in [10].
The first part of the work is devoted to the problem of associating to each $L$-regular linear connection on $M$ a nonlinear $L$-connection on $M$. The route we have followed is significantly different from that of Grifone. We introduce an almost-complex and an almost-product structures on $M$ by means of a given $L$-regular linear connection on $M$. The product of these two structures defines a nonlinear $L$-connection on $M$, which generalizes Grifone's nonlinear connection.
The seconed part is devoted to the converse problem: associating to each nonlinear $L$-connection \G on $M$ an $L$-regular linear connection on $M$; called the $L$-lift of \G. The existence of this lift is established and the fundamental tensors associated with it are studied.
In the third part, we investigate the $L$-lift of a homogeneous $L$-connection \G, called the Berwald $L$-lift of \G. Then we particularize our study to the $L$-lift of a conservative $L$-connection. This $L$-lift enjoys some interesting properties. We finally deduce various identities concerning the curvature tensors of such a lift.
Grifone's theory can be retrieved by letting $M$ be the tangent bundle of a differentiable manifold and $L$ be the natural almost-tangent structure $J$ on $M$.
In this paper we consider existence and multiplicity results concerning affine connections on $C^{k}$-manifolds $M$ whose coefficients are as regular as one needs, following the regularity theory introduced in arXiv:1908.04442. We show that if $M$ admits a $B_{α,β}^{k}$-structure, then the existence of such regular connections can be established in terms of properties of the structural presheaf $B$. In other words, we propose a solution to the existence problem in this setting. With regard to the multiplicity problem, we show that the space of regular affine connections is an affine space of t…
We show that the metrical connection can be introduced in the two-dimensional Finsler space such that entailed parallel transports along curves joining points of the underlying manifold keep the two-vector angle as well as the length of the tangent vector, thereby realizing isometries of tangent spaces under the parallel transports. The curvature tensor is found. In case of the Finsleroid-regular space, constructions possess the $C^{\infty}$-regular status globally regarding the dependence on tangent vectors. Many involved and important relations are explicitly derived. Keywords: Finsler metri…
We discuss a method for constructing multiplicative connections on proper Lie groupoids or, more exactly, for reducing the task of constructing such connections to a number of in principle simpler tasks involving only Lie groupoids that are both proper and regular.
With the intent of laying the groundwork for a program that aims at explicitly describing the space of Cartan (i.e. multiplicative) connections on a general proper Lie groupoid, we begin to investigate the space of such connections in the regular case. We point out that there is a close relationship between Cartan connections on a proper regular groupoid and representations of the groupoid on its own longitudinal bundle (i.e. on the vector distribution tangent to its orbits). This observation enables us to reduce the original problem to a simpler one. We carry out a prospective study of the la…
In this paper we study the geometrical structures on the cotangent bundle using the notions of adapted tangent structure and regular vector fields. We prove that the dynamical covariant derivative on $T^{*}M$ fix a nonlinear connection for a given $\mathcal{J}$-regular vector field. Using the Legendre transformation induced by a regular Hamiltonian, we show that a semi-Hamiltonian vector field on $T^{*}M$ corresponds to a semispray on $TM$ if and only if the nonlinear connection on $TM$ is just the canonical nonlinear connection induced by the regular Lagrangian.
We assume a vector bundle $p: E\to M$ with a general linear connection $K$ and a classical linear connection $\Lam$ on $M$. We prove that all classical linear connections on the total space $E$ naturally given by $(\Lam, K)$ form a 15-parameter family. Further we prove that all connections on $J^1 E$ naturally given by $(\Lam, K)$ form a 14-parameter family. Both families of connections are described geometrically.
The Chern-Simons forms for R-linear connections on Lie algebroids are considered. A generalized Chern-Simons formula for such R-linear connections is obtained. We it apply to define Chern character and secondary characteristic classes for R-linear connections of Lie algebroids.
We describe the ringed-space structure of moduli spaces of jets of linear connections (at a point) as orbit spaces of certain linear representations of the general linear group. Then, we use this fact to prove that the only (scalar) differential invariants associated to linear connections are constant functions, as well as to recover various expressions appearing in the literature regarding the Poincaré series of these moduli spaces.
The moduli space of jets of certain G-structures (basically those which admit a canonical linear connection) is shown to be isomorphic to the quotient of a natural G-module by G.
A linear connection $D$ in a Lie algebroid is said to be metrizable if there exists a Riemannian metric $h$ in the Lie algebroid such that $Dh=0$. Conditions for the linear connection $D$ to be metrizable are investigated.
We show that there are not pure $\mathcal{C}^5$ regular y-global Landsberg surfaced. The proof is based on the averaged connection associated with the linear Chern's connection and the classification of irreducibles holonomies of torsion-free affine connections. The structure consists on exausting all the possible cases and showing that in dimension 2 Landsberg condition implies Berwald condition.
Families of linear connections are constructed on almost contact manifolds with Norden metric. An analogous connection to the symmetric Yano connection is obtained on a normal almost contact manifold with Norden metric and closed structural 1-form. The curvature properties of this connection are studied on two basic classes of normal almost contact manifolds with Norden metric.
We deal with the construction of linear connections associated with second order ordinary differential equations with and without first order constraints. We use a novel method allowing glueing of submodule covariant derivatives to produce new, closed form expressions for the Massa-Pagani connection and our extension of it to the constrained case.
A linear connection on a Finsler manifold is called compatible to the metric if its parallel transports preserve the Finslerian length of tangent vectors. Generalized Berwald manifolds are Finsler manifolds equipped with a compatible linear connection. Since the compatibility to the Finslerian metric does not imply the unicity of the linear connection in general, the first step of checking the existence of compatible linear connections on a Finsler manifold is to choose the best one to look for. A reasonable choice is introduced in \cite{V14} called the extremal compatible linear connection, w…
We give coordinate formula and geometric description of the curvature of the tensor product connection of linear connections on vector bundles with the same base manifold. We define the covariant differential of geometric fields of certain types with respect to a pair of a linear connection on a vector bundle and a linear symmetric connection on the base manifold. We prove the generalized Bianchi identity for linear connections and we prove that the antisymmetrization of the second order covariant differential is expressed via the curvature tensors of both connections.
The reduction theorems for general linear and classical connections are generalized for operators with values in higher order gauge-natural bundles. We prove that natural operators depending on the $s_1$-jets of classical connections, on the $s_2$-jets of general linear connections and on the $r$-jets of tensor fields with values in gauge-natural bundles of order $k\ge 1$, $s_1+2\ge s_2$, $s_1,s_2\ge r-1\ge k-2$, can be factorized through the $(k-2)$-jets of both connections, the $(k-1)$-jets of the tensor fields and sufficiently high covariant differentials of the curvature tensors and the te…
In the paper we present results about generalized Berwald surfaces involving the intrinsic characterization, some topological obstructions for the base manifold and examples.
It is well-known that a torsion-free linear connection on a light-like manifold $(M,g)$ compatible with the degenerate metric $g$ exists if and only if $Rad(TM)$ is a Killing distribution. In case of existence, there is an infinitude of connections with none distinguished. We propose a method to single out connections with the help of a special set of 1-forms by the condition that the 1-forms become parallel with respect to this connection. Such sets of 1-forms could be regarded as an additional structure imposed upon the light-like manifold. We consider also connections with torsion and with …
In this paper, we introduce semi-symmetric metric Koszul forms and semi-symmetric non-metric Koszul forms on singular semi-Riemannian manifolds. Semi-symmetric metric Koszul forms and semi-symmetric non-metric Koszul forms and their curvature of semi-regular warped products are expressed in terms of those of the factor manifolds. We also introduce Koszul forms associated to the almost product structure on singular almost product semi-Riemannian manifolds. Koszul forms associated to the almost product structure and their curvature of semi-regular almost product warped products are expressed in …
Generalized Berwald manifolds are Finsler manifolds admitting linear connections such that the parallel transports preserve the Finslerian length of tangent vectors (compatibi\-li\-ty condition). By the fundamental result of the theory \cite{V5} such a linear connection must be metrical with respect to the averaged Riemannian metric given by integration of the Riemann-Finsler metric on the indicatrix hypersurfaces. Therefore the linear connection (preserving the Finslerian length of tangent vectors) is uniquely determined by its torsion. If the torsion is zero then we have a classical Berwald …
Let $π:E\to M$ be a vector bundle over a simply connected manifold and $\nabla$ a linear connection in $π$. Let $σ: U \rightarrow E$ be a $\nabla$-parallel section of $π$ defined on a connected open subset $U$ of $M$. We give sufficient conditions on $U$ in order to extend $σ$ to the whole $M$. We mainly concentrate to the case when $M$ is a $2$-dimensional simply connected manifold.
In this paper we describe the local Ricci and Bianchi identities for an h-normal N-linear connection DΓ(N) on the dual 1-jet space J^{1*}(T,M). To reach this aim, we firstly give the expressions of the local distinguished (d-) adapted components of torsion and curvature tensors produced by DΓ(N), and then we analyze their attached local Ricci identities. The derived deflection d-tensor identities are also presented. Finally, we expose the local expressions of the Bianchi identities (in the particular case of an h-normal N-linear connection of Cartan type), which geometrically connect the local…
Finsler metrics are direct generalizations of Riemannian metrics such that the quadratic Riemannian indicatrices in the tangent spaces of a manifold are replaced by more general convex bodies as unit spheres. A linear connection on the base manifold is called compatible with the Finsler metric if the induced parallel transports preserve the Finslerian length of tangent vectors. Finsler manifolds admitting compatible linear connections are called generalized Berwald manifolds. Compatible linear connections are the solutions of the so-called compatibility equations containing the torsion compone…
Generalized Berwald manifolds are Finsler manifolds admitting linear connections such that the parallel transports preserve the Finslerian length of tangent vectors. By the fundamental result of the theory \cite{V5} such a linear connection must be metrical with respect to the averaged Riemannian metric given by integration of the Riemann-Finsler metric on the indicatrix hypersurfaces. Therefore the linear connection is uniquely determined by its torsion tensor. If the torsion is zero then we have a classical Berwald manifolds. Otherwise the torsion is a strange data we need to express in term…
Let $G$ be a connected Lie group and $\mathfrak{g}$ its Lie algebra. We denote by $\nabla^0$ the torsion free bi-invariant linear connection on $G$ given by $\nabla^0_XY=\frac12[X,Y],$ for any left invariant vector fields $X,Y$. A Poisson structure on $\mathfrak{g}$ is a commutative and associative product on $\mathfrak{g}$ for which $\mathrm{ad}_u$ is a derivation, for any $u\in\mathfrak{g}$. A torsion free bi-invariant linear connections on $G$ which have the same curvature as $\nabla^0$ is called special. We show that there is a bijection between the space of special connections on $G$ and …
We present a characterization, in terms of torsion-free generalized connections, for the integrability of various generalized structures (generalized almost complex structures, generalized almost hypercomplex structures, generalized almost Hermitian structures and generalized almost hyper-Hermitian structures) defined on Courant algebroids. We develop a new, self-contained, approach for the theory of Dirac generating operators on regular Courant algebroids with scalar product of neutral signature. As an application we provide a criterion for the integrability of generalized almost Hermitian st…
We give a simple interpretation of the adapted complex structure of Lempert-Szoke and Guillemin-Stenzel: it is given by a polar decomposition of the complexified manifold. We then give a twistorial construction of an SO(3)-invariant hypercomplex structure on a neighbourhood of $X$ in $TTX$, where $X$ is a real-analytic manifold equipped with a linear connection. We show that the Nahm equations arise naturally in this context: for a connection with zero curvature and arbitrary torsion, the real sections of the twistor space can be obtained by solving Nahm's equations in the Lie algebra of certa…
A special linear Lie group over the real number field and the quarternion field admits a projectivley flat affine connection. We show that parabolic subgroups are autoparallel submanifolds and give a criterion the induced connection is projectively equivalent to a flat affine connection.
The construction of a linear connection on a pullback bundle from a connection on a vector bundle is explained in terms of fiberwise linear approximation. This procedure clarifies the geometric meaning of the linearized connection as well as the associated parallel transport and curvature.
A linear connection is associated to a nonlinear connection on a vector bundle by a linearization procedure. Our definition is intrinsic in terms of vector fields on the bundle. For a connection on an affine bundle our procedure can be applied after homogenization and restriction. Several applications in Classical Mechanics are provided.
The classical additive Deligne-Simpson problem is the existence problem for Fuchsian connections with residues at the singular points in specified adjoint orbits. Crawley-Boevey found the solution in 2003 by reinterpreting the problem in terms of quiver varieties. A more general version of this problem, solved by Hiroe, allows additional unramified irregular singularities. We apply the theory of fundamental and regular strata due to Bremer and Sage to formulate a version of the Deligne-Simpson problem in which certain ramified singularities are allowed. These allowed singular points are called…
The parallel linear transports defined by flat linear connection are axiomatically described. On this basis a number of properties, some of which are new, of these transports and connections are derived.
We construct a canonical correspondence from a wide class of reproducing kernels on infinite-dimensional Hermitian vector bundles to linear connections on these bundles. The linear connection in question is obtained through a pull-back operation involving the tautological universal bundle and the classifying morphism of the input kernel. The aforementioned correspondence turns out to be a canonical functor between categories of kernels and linear connections. A number of examples of linear connections including the ones associated to classical kernels, homogeneous reproducing kernels and kerne…
The paper introduces the notion of h-normal Γ-linear connection \nabla on 1-jet fibre bundle J^1(T,M), and studies its local d-torsions and d-curvatures togheter with theirs Bianchi identities. Also, it presents the important deflection d-tensors identities attached to \nabla.
We give a Finsler non-linear connection by a new simplified definition for not only regular case but also singular case. In regular case, it corresponds to non-linear connection part of Berwald's connection, but our connection is expressed not in line element space but in point-Finsler space. In this view we recognize Finsler metric L(x,dx) as a non-linear form, which is a natural generalisation of Riemannian metric having original expression, \sqrt{g_{ab}(x)dx^a dx^b}. Furthermore our formulae provide easier calculation rather than conventional treatments, so we think that they suits to appli…
The aim of this paper is to study from the point of view of linear connections the data $(M,\mathcal{D},g,W),$ with $M$ a smooth $(n+p)$ dimensional real manifold, $(\mathcal{D},g)$ a \textit{$n$}\textit{\emph{dimensional semi-Riemannian distribution}}\emph{}on $M,$ $\mathcal{G}$ the conformal structure generated by $g$ and $W$ a Weyl substructure: a map $W:$ $\mathcal{G}\to$ $Ω^{1}(M)$ such that $W(\overline{g})=W(g)-du,$ $\overline{g}=e^{u}g;u\in C^{\infty}(M)$. Compatible linear connections are introduced as a natural extension of similar notions from Riemannian geometry and such a connecti…
We state and prove a simple Theorem that allows one to generate invariant quantities in Metric-Affine Geometry, under a given transformation of the affine connection. We start by a general functional of the metric and the connection and consider transformations of the affine connection possessing a certain symmetry. We show that the initial functional is invariant under the aforementioned group of transformations iff its $Γ$-variation produces tensor of a given symmetry. Conversely if the tensor produced by the $Γ$-variation of the functional respects a certain symmetry then the functional is …
A method is proposed for defining an arbitrary number of differential calculi over a given noncommutative associative algebra. As an example the generalized quantum plane is studied. It is found that there is a strong correlation, but not a one-to-one correspondence, between the module structure of the 1-forms and the metric torsion-free connections on it. In the commutative limit the connection remains as a shadow of the algebraic structure of the 1-forms.
