We consider the following recurrence relation with random i.i.d. coefficients $(a_n,b_n)$: $$ x_{n+1}=a_{n+1} x_n+b_{n+1} $$ where $a_n\in GL(d,\mathbb{R}),b_n\in \mathbb{R}^d$. Under natural conditions on $(a_n,b_n)$ this equation has a unique stationary solution, and its support is non-compact. We show that, in general, its law has a heavy tail behavior and we study the corresponding directions. This provides a natural construction of laws with heavy tails in great generality. Our main result extends to the general case the results previously obtained by H. Kesten in [16] under positivity or density assumptions, and the results recently developed in [17] in a special framework.

Given a sequence $(M_{n},Q_{n})_{n\ge 1}$ of i.i.d.\ random variables with generic copy $(M,Q) \in GL(d, \R) \times \R^d$, we consider the random difference equation (RDE) $$ R_{n}=M_{n}R_{n-1}+Q_{n}, $$ $n\ge 1$, and assume the existence of $κ>0$ such that $$ \lim_{n \to \infty}(\E{\norm{M_1 ... M_n}^κ})^{\frac{1}{n}} = 1 .$$ We prove, under suitable assumptions, that the sequence $S_n = R_1 + ... + R_n$, appropriately normalized, converges in law to a multidimensional stable distribution with index $κ$. As a by-product, we show that the unique stationary solution $R$ of the RDE is regularly …
Let $G$ be a multiplicative subsemigroup of the general linear group $\Gl(\mathbb{R}^d)$ which consists of matrices with positive entries such that every column and every row contains a strictly positive element. Given a $G$--valued random matrix $A$, we consider the following generalized multidimensional affine equation R\stackrel{\mathcal{D}}{=}\sum_{i=1}^N A_iR_i+B, where $N\ge2$ is a fixed natural number, $A_1,...,A_N$ are independent copies of $A$, $B\in\mathbb{R}^d$ is a random vector with positive entries, and $R_1,...,R_N$ are independent copies of $R\in\mathbb{R}^d$, which have also p…

We consider a Markov chain $\{X_n\}_{n=0}^\8$ on $\R^d$ defined by the stochastic recursion $X_{n}=M_n X_{n-1}+Q_n$, where $(Q_n,M_n)$ are i.i.d. random variables taking values in the affine group $H=\R^d\rtimes {\rm GL}(\R^d)$. Assume that $M_n$ takes values in the similarity group of $\R^d$, and the Markov chain has a unique stationary measure $ν$, which has unbounded support. We denote by $|M_n|$ the expansion coefficient of $M_n$ and we assume $\E |M|^\a=1$ for some positive $\a$. We show that the partial sums $S_n=\sum_{k=0}^n X_k$, properly normalized, converge to a normal law ($\a\ge 2$…
We study the affine recursion $X_n = A_nX_{n-1}+B_n$ where $(A_n,B_n)\in {\mathbb R}^+ \times {\mathbb R} $ is an i.i.d. sequence and recursions $X_n = Φ_n(X_{n-1})$ defined by Lipschitz transformations such that $Φ(x)\geq Ax+B$. It is known that under appropriate hypotheses the stationary solution $X$ has regularly varying tail, i.e. $$\lim_{t\to\infty} t^α {\mathbb P}[X>t] = C. $$ However positivity of $C$ in general is either unknown or requires some additional involved arguments. In this paper we give a simple proof that $C>0$. This applies, in particular, to the case when Kesten-Goldie as…
Multivariate stochastic recurrence equations (SREs) are investigated when coefficients are triangular matrices. If coefficient matrices of SREs have all strictly positive elements, the Kesten's classical result yields solutions with regularly varying tails such that the tail indices of solutions are the same through coordinates. This framework is too restrictive for applications. In order to widen the applicability of the SREs, we study SREs with triangular matrix coefficients and prove that they have regularly varying solutions which may exhibit coordinate-wisely different tail exponents. We …
We prove a dimension-free tail comparison between the Euclidean norms of sums of independent random vectors uniformly distributed in centred Euclidean spheres and properly rescaled standard Gaussian random vectors.
Sticky Brownian motions, as time-changed semimartingale reflecting Brownian motions, have various applications in many fields, including queuing theory and mathematical finance. In this paper, we are concerned about the stationary distributions of a multidimensional sticky Brownian motion, provided it is stable. We will study the large deviations principle for stationary distribution and the tail behaviour of the joint stationary distribution.
We investigate the tail behaviour of the steady state distribution of a stochastic recursion that generalises Lindley's recursion. This recursion arises in queuing systems with dependent interarrival and service times, and includes alternating service systems and carousel storage systems as special cases. We obtain precise tail asymptotics in three qualitatively different cases, and compare these with existing results for Lindley's recursion and for alternating service systems.
Using a very simple argument based on the indepenence of increments and the fact that in a finite dimensional space $R^{d}$ there are not too many directions, we derive a theorem stating that exit time of any (non-constant) Lévy process on $R^{d}$ from a ball has exponentially light tails.
We study the stochastic recursion $X_n=Ψ_n(X_{n-1})$, where $(Ψ_n)_{n\geq 1}$ is a sequence of i.i.d. random Lipschitz mappings close to the random affine transformation $x\mapsto Ax+B$. We describe the tail behaviour of the stationary solution $X$ under the assumption that there exists $α>0$ such that $\mathbb{E} |A|^α=1$ and the tail of $B$ is regularly varying with index $-α<0$. We also find the second order asymptotics of the tail of $X$ when $Ψ(x)=Ax+B$.
Consider the linear nonhomogeneous fixed point equation R =_d sum_{i=1}^N C_i R_i + Q, where (Q,N,C_1,...,C_N) is a random vector with N in{0,1,2,3,...}U{infty}, {C_i}_{i=1}^N >= 0, P(|Q|>0) > 0, and {R_i}_{i=1}^N is a sequence of i.i.d. random variables independent of (Q,N,C_1,...,C_N) having the same distribution as R. It is known that R will have a heavy-tailed distribution under several different sets of assumptions on the vector (Q,N,C_1,...,C_N). This paper investigates the settings where either Z_N = sum_{i=1}^N C_i or Q are regularly varying with index -alpha < -1 and E[sum_{i=1}^N C_i…
We consider the equation R(n)=Q(n)+M(n) R(n-1), with random non-i.i.d. coefficients (Q(n),M(n)), and show that the distribution tails of the stationary solution to this equation are regularly varying at infinity.
Let $Φ_n$ be an i.i.d. sequence of Lipschitz mappings of $\R^d$. We study the Markov chain $\{X_n^x\}_{n=0}^\infty$ on $\R^d$ defined by the recursion $X_n^x = Φ_n(X^x_{n-1})$, $n\in\N$, $X_0^x=x\in\R^d$. We assume that $Φ_n(x)=Φ(A_n x,B_n(x))$ for a fixed continuous function $Φ:\R^d\times \R^d\to\R^d$, commuting with dilations and i.i.d random pairs $(A_n,B_n)$, where $A_n\in {End}(\R^d)$ and $B_n$ is a continuous mapping of $\R^d$. Moreover, $B_n$ is $α$-regularly varying and $A_n$ has a faster decay at infinity than $B_n$. We prove that the stationary measure $ν$ of the Markov chain $\{X_n^…
For a class of stationary Markov-dependent sequences $(A_n,B_n)\in\mathbb{R}^2,$ we consider the random linear recursion $S_n=A_n+B_nS_{n-1},$ $n\in\mathbb{Z},$ and show that the distribution tail of its stationary solution has a power law decay.
We consider a general multidimensional affine recursion with corresponding Markov operator $P$ and a unique $P$-stationary measure. We show spectral gap properties on Hölder spaces for the corresponding Fourier operators and we deduce convergence to stable laws for the Birkhoff sums along the recursion. The parameters of the stable laws are expressed in terms of basic quantities depending essentially on the matricial multiplicative part of $P$. Spectral gap properties of $P$ and homogeneity at infinity of the $P$-stationary measure play an important role in the proofs.
The infinite source Poisson arrival model with heavy-tailed workload distributions has attracted much attention, especially in the modeling of data packet traffic in communication networks. In particular, it is well known that under suitable assumptions on the source arrival rate, the centered and scaled cumulative workload process for the underlying processing system can be approximated by fractional Brownian motion. In many applications one is interested in the stabilization of the work inflow to the system by modifying the net input rate, using an appropriate admission control policy. In th…
The signature of a path γis a sequence whose n-th term is the order-n iterated integrals of γ. It arises from solving multidimensional linear differential equations driven by γ. We are interested in relating the path properties of γwith its signature. If γis C^{1}, then an elegant formula of Hambly and Lyons relates the length of γto the tail asymptotics of the signature. We show an analogous formula for the multidimensional Brownian motion, with the quadratic variation playing a similar role to the length. In the proof, we study the hyperbolic development of Brownian motion and also obtain a …
We consider asymptotics for the maximum of a modulated random walk whose increments $ξ_n^{X_n}$ are heavy-tailed. Of particular interest is the case where the modulating process $X$ is regenerative. Here we study also the maximum of the recursion given by $W_0=0$ and, for $n\ge1$, $W_n=\max(0,W_{n-1}+ξ_n^{X_n})$
We study a continuous-time branching random walk on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$, $d\in \mathbb{N}$, with a single source of branching, that is the lattice point where the birth and death of particles can occur. The random walk is assumed to be homogeneous, symmetric and irreducible but, in contrast to previous investigations, the random walk transition intensities $a(x,y)$ decrease as $|y-x|^{-(d+α)}$ for $|y-x|\to \infty$, where $α\in(0,2)$, that leads to an infinite variance of the random walk jumps. The~mechanism of the birth and death of particles at the source is governed by a continuous…
The random variable $1+z_1+z_1z_2+\dots$ appears in many contexts and was shown by Kesten to exhibit a heavy tail distribution. We consider natural extensions of this variable and its associated recursion to $N \times N$ matrices either real symmetric $β=1$ or complex Hermitian $β=2$. In the continuum limit of this recursion, we show that the matrix distribution converges to the inverse-Wishart ensemble of random matrices. The full dynamics is solved using a mapping to $N$ fermions in a Morse potential, which are non-interacting for $β=2$. At finite $N$ the distribution of eigenvalues exhibits…
We extend Goldie's (1991) Implicit Renewal Theorem to enable the analysis of recursions on weighted branching trees. We illustrate the developed method by deriving the power tail asymptotics of the distributions of the solutions R to: R =_D sum_{i=1}^N C_i R_i + Q, R =_D max(max_{i=1}^N C_i R_i, Q), and similar recursions, where (Q, N, C_1,..., C_N) is a nonnegative random vector with N in {0, 1, 2, 3, ..., infinity}, and {R_i}_{i >= 1} are iid copies of R, independent of (Q, N, C_1,..., C_N); =_D denotes the equality in distribution.
A catalytic branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice, with arbitrary finite number of catalysts, is studied in supercritical regime. The dynamics of spatial spread of the particles population is examined, upon normalization. The components of the vector random walk jump are assumed independent (or close to independent) and have semi-exponential distributions with, possibly, different parameters. A limit theorem on the almost sure normalized positions of the particles at the population ``front'' is established. Contrary to the case of the random walk increments with ``light'' distrib…
We consider a Markov modulated fluid network with a finite number of stations. We are interested in the tail asymptotics behavior of the stationary distribution of its buffer content process. Using two different approaches, we derive upper and lower bounds for the stationary tail decay rate in various directions. Both approaches are based on a well-known time-evolution formula of a Markov process, so-called Dynkin's formula, where a key ingredient is a suitable choice of test functions. Those results show how multidimensional tail asymptotics can be studied for the more than two-dimensional ca…
Consider an multidimensional obliquely reflected Brownian motion in the positive orthant, or, more generally, in a convex polyhedral cone. We find sufficient conditions for existence of a stationary distribution and convergence to this distribution at the exponential rate, as time goes to infinity. We also prove that certain exponential moments for this distribution are finite, thus providing a tail estimate for this distribution. Finally, we apply these results to systems of rank-based competing Brownian particles.
We study the minimal/endogenous solution $R$ to the maximum recursion on weighted branching trees given by $$R\stackrel{\mathcal{D}}{=}\left(\bigvee_{i=1}^NC_iR_i \right)\vee Q,$$ where $(Q,N,C_1,C_2,\dots)$ is a random vector with $N\in \mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$, $P(|Q|>0)>0$ and nonnegative weights $\{C_i\}$, and $\{R_i\}_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ is a sequence of i.i.d. copies of $R$ independent of $(Q,N,C_1,C_2,\dots)$; $\stackrel{\mathcal{D}}{=}$ denotes equality in distribution. Furthermore, when $Q>0$ this recursion can be transformed into its additive equivalent, which corresponds to the maxim…
Sequential Monte Carlo methods which involve sequential importance sampling and resampling are shown to provide a versatile approach to computing probabilities of rare events. By making use of martingale representations of the sequential Monte Carlo estimators, we show how resampling weights can be chosen to yield logarithmically efficient Monte Carlo estimates of large deviation probabilities for multidimensional Markov random walks.
It is shown that \begin{equation*} \mathsf{P}(\|a_1U_1+\dots+a_nU_n\|>u)\le c\,\mathsf{P}(a\|Z_d\|>u) \end{equation*} for all real $u$, where $U_1,\dots,U_n$ are independent random vectors uniformly distributed on the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $a_1,\dots,a_n$ are any real numbers, $a:=\sqrt{(a_1^2+\dots+a_n^2)/d}$, $Z_d$ is a standard normal random vector in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and $c=2e^3/9=4.46\dots$. This constant factor is about $89$ times as small as the one in a recent result by Nayar and Tkocz, who proved, by a different method, a corresponding conjecture by Oleszkiewicz. As an immedia…
We consider the Markov chain $\{X_n^x\}_{n=0}^\infty$ on $\R^d$ defined by the stochastic recursion $X_{n}^{x}=\p_{θ_{n}}(X_{n-1}^{x})$, starting at $x\in\R^d$, where $θ_{1}, θ_{2},...$ are i.i.d. random variables taking their values in a metric space $(Θ, \mathfrak{r}),$ and $\p_{θ_{n}}:\R^d\mapsto\R^d$ are Lipschitz maps. Assume that the Markov chain has a unique stationary measure $ν$. Under appropriate assumptions on $\p_{θ_n}$, we will show that the measure $ν$ has a heavy tail with the exponent $α>0$ i.e. $ν(\{x\in\R^d: |x|>t\})\asymp t^{-α}$. Using this result we show that properly norm…
This paper considers a general stochastic SIR epidemic model driven by a multidimensional Levy jump process with heavy tailed increments and possible correlation between noise components. In this framework, we derive new sufficient conditions for disease extinction and persistence in the mean. Our method differs from previous approaches by the use of Kunita's inequality instead of the Burkholder-Davis-Gundy inequality for continuous processes, and allows for the treatment of infinite Levy measures by the definition of new threshold values. An SIR model driven by a tempered stable process is pr…
We consider solutions to the maximum recursion on weighted branching trees given by$$X\,{\buildrel d\over=}\,\bigvee_{i=1}^{N}{A_iX_i}\vee B,$$where $N$ is a random natural number, $B$ and $\{A_i\}_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$ are random positive numbers and $X_i$ are independent copies of $X$, also independent of $N$, $B$, $\{A_i\}_{i\in\mathbb{N}}$. Properties of solutions to this equation are governed mainly by the function $m(s)=\mathbb{E}\big[\sum_{i=1}^NA_i^s\big]$. Recently, Jelenković and Olvera-Cravioto proved, assuming e.g. $m(s)<1$ for some $s$, that the asymptotic behavior of the endogenous s…
We study the situations when the solution to a weighted stochastic recursion has a power law tail. To this end, we develop two complementary approaches, the first one extends Goldie's (1991) implicit renewal theorem to cover recursions on trees; and the second one is based on a direct sample path large deviations analysis of weighted recursive random sums. We believe that these methods may be of independent interest in the analysis of more general weighted branching processes as well as in the analysis of algorithms.
Let $V=\mathbb R^d$ be the Euclidean $d$-dimensional space, $μ$ (resp $λ$) a probability measure on the linear (resp affine) group $G=G L (V)$ (resp $H= \Aff (V))$ and assume that $μ$ is the projection of $λ$ on $G$. We study asymptotic properties of the iterated convolutions $μ^n *δ\_{v}$ (resp $λ^n*δ\_{v})$ if $v\in V$, i.e asymptotics of the random walk on $V$ defined by $μ$ (resp $λ$), if the subsemigroup $T\subset G$ (resp.\ $Σ\subset H$) generated by the support of $μ$ (resp $λ$) is "large". We show spectral gap properties for the convolution operator defined by $μ$ on spaces of homogene…
Branching random walks on multidimensional lattice with heavy tails and a constant branching rate are considered. It is shown that under these conditions (heavy tails and constant rate), the front propagates exponentially fast, but the particles inside of the front are distributed very non-uniformly. The particles exhibit intermittent behavior in a large part of the region behind the front (i.e., the particles are concentrated only in very sparse spots there). The zone of non-intermittency (were particles are distributed relatively uniformly) extends with a power rate. This rate is found.
Given a sequence $(M_{n},Q_{n})_{n\ge 1}$ of i.i.d. random variables with generic copy $(M,Q)$ such that $M$ is a regular $d\times d$ matrix and $Q$ takes values in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, we consider the random difference equation (RDE) $R_{n}=M_{n}R_{n-1}+Q_{n}$, $n\ge 1$. Under suitable assumptions, this equation has a unique stationary solution $R$ such that, for some $κ>0$ and some finite positive and continuous function $K$ on $S^{d-1}:=\{x \in \mathbb{R}^{d}:|x|=1\}$, $ \lim_{t \to \infty} t^κ P(xR>t)=K(x)$ for all $x \in S^{d-1} $ holds true. This result is originally due to Kesten and Le Pa…
Let $X_1,X_2,...$ be a sequence of random variables satisfying the distributional recursion $X_1=0$ and $X_n= X_{n-I_n}+1$ for $n=2,3,...$, where $I_n$ is a random variable with values in $\{1,...,n-1\}$ which is independent of $X_2,...,X_{n-1}$. The random variable $X_n$ can be interpreted as the absorption time of a suitable death Markov chain with state space ${\mathbb N}:=\{1,2,...\}$ and absorbing state 1, conditioned that the chain starts in the initial state $n$. This paper focuses on the asymptotics of $X_n$ as $n$ tends to infinity under the particular but important assumption that th…
We consider a continuous-time symmetric supercritical branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice with a finite set of the particle generation centres, i.e. branching sources. The main object of study is the evolutionary operator for the mean number of particles both at an arbitrary point and on the entire lattice. The existence of positive eigenvalues in the spectrum of an evolutionary operator results in an exponential growth of the number of particles in branching random walks, called supercritical in the such case. For supercritical branching random walks, it is shown that the amou…
