We consider a Markov chain $\{X_n\}_{n=0}^\8$ on $\R^d$ defined by the stochastic recursion $X_{n}=M_n X_{n-1}+Q_n$, where $(Q_n,M_n)$ are i.i.d. random variables taking values in the affine group $H=\R^d\rtimes {\rm GL}(\R^d)$. Assume that $M_n$ takes values in the similarity group of $\R^d$, and the Markov chain has a unique stationary measure $ν$, which has unbounded support. We denote by $|M_n|$ the expansion coefficient of $M_n$ and we assume $\E |M|^\a=1$ for some positive $\a$. We show that the partial sums $S_n=\sum_{k=0}^n X_k$, properly normalized, converge to a normal law ($\a\ge 2$) or to an infinitely divisible law, which is stable in a natural sense ($\a<2$). These laws are fully nondegenerate, if $ν$ is not supported on an affine hyperplane. Under a natural hypothesis, we prove also a local limit theorem for the sums $S_n$. If $\a\le 2$, proofs are based on the homogeneity at infinity of $ν$ and on a detailed spectral analysis of a family of Fourier operators $P_v$ considered as perturbations of the transition operator $P$ of the chain $\{X_n \}$. The characteristic function of the limit law has a simple expression in terms of moments of $ν$ ($\a > 2$) or of the tails of $ν$ and of stationary measure for an associated Markov operator ($\a\le 2$). We extend the results to the situation where $M_n$ is a random generalized similarity.

Given a sequence $(M_{n},Q_{n})_{n\ge 1}$ of i.i.d.\ random variables with generic copy $(M,Q) \in GL(d, \R) \times \R^d$, we consider the random difference equation (RDE) $$ R_{n}=M_{n}R_{n-1}+Q_{n}, $$ $n\ge 1$, and assume the existence of $κ>0$ such that $$ \lim_{n \to \infty}(\E{\norm{M_1 ... M_n}^κ})^{\frac{1}{n}} = 1 .$$ We prove, under suitable assumptions, that the sequence $S_n = R_1 + ... + R_n$, appropriately normalized, converges in law to a multidimensional stable distribution with index $κ$. As a by-product, we show that the unique stationary solution $R$ of the RDE is regularly …
Let $G$ be a multiplicative subsemigroup of the general linear group $\Gl(\mathbb{R}^d)$ which consists of matrices with positive entries such that every column and every row contains a strictly positive element. Given a $G$--valued random matrix $A$, we consider the following generalized multidimensional affine equation R\stackrel{\mathcal{D}}{=}\sum_{i=1}^N A_iR_i+B, where $N\ge2$ is a fixed natural number, $A_1,...,A_N$ are independent copies of $A$, $B\in\mathbb{R}^d$ is a random vector with positive entries, and $R_1,...,R_N$ are independent copies of $R\in\mathbb{R}^d$, which have also p…
We consider the following recurrence relation with random i.i.d. coefficients $(a_n,b_n)$: $$ x_{n+1}=a_{n+1} x_n+b_{n+1} $$ where $a_n\in GL(d,\mathbb{R}),b_n\in \mathbb{R}^d$. Under natural conditions on $(a_n,b_n)$ this equation has a unique stationary solution, and its support is non-compact. We show that, in general, its law has a heavy tail behavior and we study the corresponding directions. This provides a natural construction of laws with heavy tails in great generality. Our main result extends to the general case the results previously obtained by H. Kesten in [16] under positivity or…

We consider a general multidimensional affine recursion with corresponding Markov operator $P$ and a unique $P$-stationary measure. We show spectral gap properties on Hölder spaces for the corresponding Fourier operators and we deduce convergence to stable laws for the Birkhoff sums along the recursion. The parameters of the stable laws are expressed in terms of basic quantities depending essentially on the matricial multiplicative part of $P$. Spectral gap properties of $P$ and homogeneity at infinity of the $P$-stationary measure play an important role in the proofs.
We investigate the density large deviation function for a multidimensional conservation law in the vanishing viscosity limit, when the probability concentrates on weak solutions of a hyperbolic conservation law conservation law. When the conductivity and dif-fusivity matrices are proportional, i.e. an Einstein-like relation is satisfied, the problem has been solved in [4]. When this proportionality does not hold, we compute explicitly the large deviation function for a step-like density profile, and we show that the associated optimal current has a non trivial structure. We also derive a lower…
We study the situations when the solution to a weighted stochastic recursion has a power law tail. To this end, we develop two complementary approaches, the first one extends Goldie's (1991) implicit renewal theorem to cover recursions on trees; and the second one is based on a direct sample path large deviations analysis of weighted recursive random sums. We believe that these methods may be of independent interest in the analysis of more general weighted branching processes as well as in the analysis of algorithms.
In this paper we study the tightness of solutions for a family of recursion equations. These equations arise naturally in the study of random walks on tree-like structures. Examples include the maximal displacement of a branching random walk in one dimension and the cover time of a symmetric simple random walk on regular binary trees. Recursion equations associated with the distribution functions of these quantities have been used to establish weak laws of large numbers. Here, we use these recursion equations to establish the tightness of the corresponding sequences of distribution functions a…
We prove that probability laws of certain multidimensional semimartingales which includes time-inhomogenous diffusions, under suitable assumptions, satisfy Quadratic Transportation Cost Inequality under the uniform metric. From this we derive concentration properties of Lipschitz functions of process paths that depend on the entire history. In particular, we estimate concentration of boundary local time of reflected Brownian motions on a polyhedral domain. We work out explicit applications of consequences of measure concentration for the case of Brownian motion with rank-based drifts.
We consider a continuous-time branching random walk on a multidimensional lattice with two types of particles and an infinite number of initial particles. The main results are devoted to the study of the generating function and the limiting behavior of the moments of subpopulations generated by a single particle of each type. We assume that particle types differ from each other not only by the laws of branching, as in multi-type branching processes, but also by the laws of walking. For a critical branching process at each lattice point and recurrent random walk of particles, the effect of limi…
Using Malliavin operators together with an interpolation technique inspired by Arratia, Goldstein and Gordon (1989), we prove a new inequality on the Poisson space, allowing one to measure the distance between the laws of a general random vector, and of a target random element composed of Gaussian and Poisson random variables. Several consequences are deduced from this result, in particular: (1) new abstract criteria for multidimensional stable convergence on the Poisson space, (2) a class of mixed limit theorems, involving both Poisson and Gaussian limits, (3) criteria for the asymptotic inde…
We study branching random walks in random environment on the $d$-dimensional square lattice, $d \geq 1$. In this model, the environment has finite range dependence, and the population size cannot decrease. We prove limit theorems (laws of large numbers) for the set of lattice sites which are visited up to a large time as well as for the local size of the population. The limiting shape of this set is compact and convex, though the local size is given by a concave growth exponent. Also, we obtain the law of large numbers for the logarithm of the total number of particles in the process.
We consider a random walk in random environment with random holding times, that is, the random walk jumping to one of its nearest neighbors with some transition probability after a random holding time. Both the transition probabilities and the laws of the holding times are randomly distributed over the integer lattice. Our main result is a quenched large deviation principle for the position of the random walk. The rate function is given by the Legendre transform of the so-called Lyapunov exponents for the Laplace transform of the first passage time. By using this representation, we derive some…
We prove that multidimensional diffusions in random environment have a limiting velocity which takes at most two different values. Further, in the two-dimensional case we show that for any direction, the probability to escape to infinity in this direction equals either zero or one. Combined with our results on the limiting velocity, this implies a strong law of large numbers in two dimensions.
The free Meixner laws arise as the distributions of orthogonal polynomials with constant-coefficient recursions. We show that these are the laws of the free pairs of random variables which have linear regressions and quadratic conditional variances when conditioned with respect to their sum. We apply this result to describe free Levy processes with quadratic conditional variances, and to prove a converse implication related to asymptotic freeness of random Wishart matrices.
Several classical results on boundary crossing probabilities of Brownian motion and random walks are extended to asymptotically Gaussian random fields, which include sums of i.i.d. random variables with multidimensional indices, multivariate empirical processes, and scan statistics in change-point and signal detection as special cases. Some key ingredients in these extensions are moderate deviation approximations to marginal tail probabilities and weak convergence of the conditional distributions of certain ``clumps'' around high-level crossings. We also discuss how these results are related t…
We consider the Markov chain $\{X_n^x\}_{n=0}^\infty$ on $\R^d$ defined by the stochastic recursion $X_{n}^{x}=\p_{θ_{n}}(X_{n-1}^{x})$, starting at $x\in\R^d$, where $θ_{1}, θ_{2},...$ are i.i.d. random variables taking their values in a metric space $(Θ, \mathfrak{r}),$ and $\p_{θ_{n}}:\R^d\mapsto\R^d$ are Lipschitz maps. Assume that the Markov chain has a unique stationary measure $ν$. Under appropriate assumptions on $\p_{θ_n}$, we will show that the measure $ν$ has a heavy tail with the exponent $α>0$ i.e. $ν(\{x\in\R^d: |x|>t\})\asymp t^{-α}$. Using this result we show that properly norm…
In this article, we explore some of the main mathematical problems connected to multidimensional fractional conservation laws driven by Lévy processes. Making use of an adapted entropy formulation, a result of existence and uniqueness of a solution is established. Moreover, using bounded variation (BV) estimates for vanishing viscosity approximations, we derive an explicit continuous dependence estimate on the nonlinearities of the entropy solutions under the assumption that Lévy noise depends only on the solution. This result is used to show the error estimate for the stochastic vanishing vis…
