Let n and k be natural numbers and let S(n,k) denote the Stirling numbers of the second kind. It is a conjecture of Wilf that the alternating sum \sum_{j=0}^{n} (-1)^{j} S(n,j) is nonzero for all n>2. We prove this conjecture for all n not congruent to 2 and not congruent to 2944838 modulo 3145728 and discuss applications of this result to graph theory, multiplicative partition functions, and the irrationality of p-adic series.
Let S(n,k) be the Stirling number of the second kind. Wilf conjectured that the alternating sum of S(n,k) for k from 0 to n is not zero for all n>2. In this paper, we prove that Wilf conjecture is true except at most one number with the properties of weighted Motzkin number.
Let $S\subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be a numerical semigroup with multiplicity $m$, embedding dimension $ν$ and conductor $c=f+1=qm-ρ$ for some $q,ρ\in\mathbb{N}$ with $ρ<m$. Let Ap$(S,m) = \{w\_0<w_1 < \ldots < w_{m-1}\}$ be the Apéry set of $S$. The aim of this paper is to prove Wilf's Conjecture in some special cases. First, we prove that if $w_{m-1}\geq w_1+w_α$ and $(2+\frac{α-3}{q})ν\geq m$ for some $1<α<m-1$, then $S$ satisfies Wilf's Conjecture. Then, we prove the conjecture in the following cases: $(2+\frac{1}{q})ν\geq m$, $m-ν\leq 5$ and $m=9$. Finally, the conjecture is proved if $w_{m-1} \…
Given coprime positive integers $g_1 < \ldots < g_e$, the Frobenius number $F=F(g_1,\ldots,g_e)$ is the largest integer not representable as a linear combination of $g_1,\ldots,g_e$ with non-negative integer coefficients. Let $n$ denote the number of all representable non-negative integers less than $F$; Wilf conjectured that $F+1 \le e n$. We provide bounds for $g_1$ and for the type of the numerical semigroup $S=\langle g_1,\ldots,g_e \rangle$ in function of $e$ and $n$, and use these bounds to prove that $F+1 \le q e n$, where $q= \left \lceil \frac{F+1}{g_1} \right \rceil$, and $F+1 \le e …
Given coprime positive integers $a_1 < ...< a_d$, the Frobenius number $F$ is the largest integer which is not representable as a non-negative integer combination of the $a_i$. Let $g$ denote the number of all non-representable positive integers: Wilf conjectured that $d \geq \frac{F+1}{F+1-g}$. We prove that for every fixed value of $\lceil \frac{a_1}{d} \rceil$ the conjecture holds for all values of $a_1$ which are sufficiently large and are not divisible by a finite set of primes. We also propose a generalization in the context of one-dimensional local rings and a question on the equality $…
We give an affirmative answer to Wilf's conjecture for numerical semigroups satisfying 2 ν\geq m, where νand m are respectively the embedding dimension and the multiplicity of a semigroup. The conjecture is also proved when m \leq 8 and when the semigroup is generated by a generalized arithmetic sequence.
Let $\CaC\subset \Q^p$ be a rational cone. An affine semigroup $S\subset \CaC$ is a $\CaC$-semigroup whenever $(\CaC\setminus S)\cap \N^p$ has only a finite number of elements. In this work, we study the tree of $\CaC$-semigroups, give a method to generate it and study their subsemigroups with minimal embedding dimension. We extend Wilf's conjecture for numerical semigroups to $\CaC$-semigroups and give some families of $\CaC$-semigroups fulfilling the extended conjecture. We also check that other conjectures on numerical semigroups seem to be also satisfied by $\CaC$-semigroups.
In 1979 Goldfeld conjectured: 50\% of the quadratic twists of an elliptic curve defined over the rationals have analytic rank zero. In this expository article we present a few recent developments towards the conjecture, especially its first instance - the congruent number elliptic curves.
We take an approach toward counting the number of n for which the curves E_n: y^2=x^3-n^2x have 2-Selmer groups of a given size. This question was also discussed in a pair of Invent. Math. papers by Roger Heath-Brown. We discuss the connection between computing the size of these Selmer groups and verifying cases of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. The key ingredient for the asymptotic formulae is the ``independence'' of the Legendre symbol evaluated at the prime divisors of an integer with exactly k prime factors.
For an elliptic curve $E$ over $K$, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture predicts that the rank of Mordell-Weil group $E(K)$ is equal to the order of the zero of $L(E_{/ K},s)$ at $s=1$. In this paper, we shall give a proof for elliptic curves with complex multiplications. The key method of the proof is to reduce the Galois action of infinite order on the Tate module of an elliptic curve to that of finite order by using the $p$-adic Hodge theory. As a corollary, we can determine whether a given natural number is a congruent number (congruent number problem). This problem is one of the olde…
We prove that the rational elliptic curve y^2 = x^3 - n^2x satisfies the full Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for at least 41.9% of positive squarefree integers n equal to 1, 2, or 3 mod 8, and that it satisfies the regular BSD conjecture for at least 55.9% of positive squarefree integers n equal to 5, 6, or 7 mod 8. In particular, at least 55.9% of positive squarefree integers equal to 5, 6, or 7 mod 8 are congruent numbers. These proofs complete an argument started by Tian, Yuan, and Zhang.
Recently, George Beck introduced two partition statistics $NT(m,j,n)$ and $M_ω(m,j,n)$, which denote the total number of parts in the partition of $n$ with rank congruent to $m$ modulo $j$ and the total number of ones in the partition of $n$ with crank congruent to $m$ modulo $j$, respectively. Andrews proved a congruence on $NT(m,5,n)$ which was conjectured by Beck. Very recently, Chan, Mao and Osburn established a number of Andrews-Beck type congruences and posed several conjectures involving $NT(m,j,n)$ and $M_ω(m,j,n)$. Some of those conjectures were proved by Chern and Mao. In this paper,…
We study the parity of rank of $2$-${\rm Selmer}$ groups associated to $π/3$ and $2π/3$-congruent numbers. Our second result gives some positive densities about $π/3$ and $2π/3$ non-congruent numbers which can support the even part of Goldfeld's conjecture. We give some necessary conditions such that $n$ is non $π/3$-congruent number for elliptic curves $E_n$ whose Shafarevich-Tate group is non-trivial. In the last section, we show that for $n=pq\equiv 5(resp. \ 11)\pmod{24}$, the density of non $π/3$($resp.$ $2π/3$)-congruent numbers is at least 75\%, where $p,q$ are primes.
We reformulate the $3x+1$ conjecture by restricting attention to numbers congruent to $2$ (mod $3$). This leads to an equivalent conjecture for positive integers that reveals new aspects of the dynamics of the $3x+1$ problem. Advantages include a governing function with particularly simple mapping properties in terms of partitions of the set of integers. We use the refined conjecture to obtain a new characterization of $3x+1$ trajectories that shows a special role played by numbers congruent to $2$ or $8$ (mod $9$). We construct an accelerated iteration whose long-term behavior involves only t…
We conjecture a Fibonacci-like property on the number of numerical semigroups of a given genus. Moreover we conjecture that the associated quotient sequence approaches the golden ratio. The conjecture is motivated by the results on the number of semigroups of genus at most 50. The Wilf conjecture has also been checked for all numerical semigroups with genus in the same range.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of reflecting numbers to the realm of number theory and to classify reflecting numbers of certain types. For us, reflecting numbers are coming from congruent numbers, above congruent numbers, and away from congruent numbers. Explicitly speaking, a reflecting number of type $(k,m)$ is the average of two distinct rational $k$th powers, between which the distance is twice another nonzero rational $m$th power. In particular, reflecting numbers of type $(2,2)$ are all congruent numbers and thus will be called reflecting congruent numbers in this…
A conjecture of Mordell states that if $p$ is a prime and $p$ is congruent to $3$ mod $4$, then $p$ does not divide $y$ where $(x,y)$ is the fundamental solution to $x^{2}-py^{2}=1$. The conjecture has been verified for primes not exceeding $10^{7}$. In this article, we show that Mordell's conjecture holds for four conjecturally infinite families of primes.
It is conjectured that every integer N>454 is the sum of seven nonnegative cubes. We prove the conjecture when N is congruent to 2 mod 4. This result, together with a recent proof for 4|N, shows that the conjecture is true for all even N.
A number of authors have proven explicit versions of Lehmer's conjecture for polynomials whose coefficients are all congruent to 1 modulo m. We prove a similar result for polynomials f(X) that are divisible in (Z/mZ)[X] by a polynomial of the form 1+X+...+X^n for some n > ε*deg(f). We also formulate and prove an analogous statement for elliptic curves.
We investigate sums of mixed powers involving two squares and three biquadrates. In particular, subject to the truth of the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis and the Elliott-Halberstam Conjecture, we show that all large natural numbers n with 8 not dividing n, n not congruent to 2 modulo 3, and n not congruent to 14 modulo 16, are the sum of 2 squares and 3 biquadrates.
In this paper we confirm a conjecture of Sun which states that each positive integer is a sum of a square, an odd square and a triangular number. Given any positive integer m, we show that p=2m+1 is a prime congruent to 3 modulo 4 if and only if T_m=m(m+1)/2 cannot be expressed as a sum of two odd squares and a triangular number, i.e., p^2=x^2+8(y^2+z^2) for no odd integers x,y,z. We also show that a positive integer cannot be written as a sum of an odd square and two triangular numbers if and only if it is of the form 2T_m (m>0) with 2m+1 having no prime divisor congruent to 3 modulo 4.
We show that almost all natural numbers n not divisible by 4, and not congruent to 7 modulo 8, are represented as the sum of three squares, one of which is the square of an integer no larger than (log n)^{1+e} (any e>0). This answers a conjecture of Linnik for almost all natural numbers, and sharpens a conclusion of Bourgain, Rudnick and Sarnak concerning nearest neighbour distances between normalised integral points on the sphere.
Let $p(n)$ be the partition function. Ahlgren and Ono conjectured that every arithmetic progression contains infinitely many integers $N$ for which $p(N)$ is not congruent to $0\pmod{3}$. Radu proved this conjecture in 2010 using work of Deligne and Rapoport. In this note, we give a simpler proof of Ahlgren and Ono's conjecture in the special case where the modulus of the arithmetic progression is a power of $3$ by applying a method of Boylan and Ono and using work of Bellaïche and Khare generalizing Serre's results on the local nilpotency of the Hecke algebra.
Let $K = \mathbb Q(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is a prime congruent to $3$ modulo $4$. Let $A = A(q)$ denote the Gross curve over the Hilbert class field $H$ of $K$. In this note we use Magma to calculate the values $L(E/H, 1)$ for all such $q$'s up to some reasonable ranges for all primes $q$ congruent to $7$ modulo $8$. All these values are non-zero, and using the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, we can calculate hypothetical orders of the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$ for all such $q$ up to $4831$.
Let p be an odd prime, let S be a finite set of primes q congruent to 1 mod p but not mod p^2 and let G_S be the Galois group of the maximal p-extension of Q un-ramified outside of S. If r is a continuous homomorphism of G_S into GL_2(Z_p) then under certain conditions on the linking numbers of S we show that r=1 if its reduction mod p is 1. We also show that the reduction of r mod p is 1 if r can be put in triangular form mod p^3.
Fix m >= 1 and let E be an elliptic curve over Q with complex multiplication. We formulate conjectures on the density of primes p (congruent to one modulo m) for which the pth Fourier coefficient of E is an mth power modulo p; often these densities differ from the naive expectation of 1/m. We also prove our conjectures for m dividing the number of roots of unity lying in the CM field of E; the most involved case is m=4 and complex multiplication by Q(i).
We study the Dyson rank function $N(r,t;n)$, the number of partitions with rank congruent to $r$ modulo $t$. We first show that it is monotonic in $n$, and then show that it equidistributed as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Using this result we prove a conjecture of Hou and Jagadeeson on the convexity of $N(r,t;n)$.

Let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime number congruent to $7$ modulo $8$, with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}$ and Hilbert class field $H$. Suppose $p\nmid [H:K]$ is a prime number which splits in $K$, say $p\mathcal{O}=\mathfrak{p}\mathfrak{p}^*$. Let $H_\infty=HK_\infty$ where $K_\infty$ is the unique $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Write $M(H_\infty)$ for the maximal abelian $p$-extension of $H_\infty$ unramified outside the primes above $\mathfrak{p}$, and set $X(H_\infty)=\mathrm{Gal}(M(H_\infty)/H_\infty)$. In this paper, we establish the…
Let $f$ be a cuspidal eigenform of weight two and level $N$, let $p\nmid N$ be a prime at which $f$ is congruent to an Eisenstein series and let $V_f$ denote the $p$-adic Tate module of $f$. Beilinson constructed a class $κ_f\in H^1(\mathbb Q,V_f(1))$ arising from the cup-product of two Siegel units and proved a striking relationship with the first derivative $L'(f,0)$ at the near central point $s=0$ of the $L$-series of $f$, which led him to formulate his celebrated conjecture. In this note we prove two congruence formulae relating the "motivic part" of $L'(f,0) \,(\mathrm{mod} \, p)$ and $L'…
