We reformulate the $3x+1$ conjecture by restricting attention to numbers congruent to $2$ (mod $3$). This leads to an equivalent conjecture for positive integers that reveals new aspects of the dynamics of the $3x+1$ problem. Advantages include a governing function with particularly simple mapping properties in terms of partitions of the set of integers. We use the refined conjecture to obtain a new characterization of $3x+1$ trajectories that shows a special role played by numbers congruent to $2$ or $8$ (mod $9$). We construct an accelerated iteration whose long-term behavior involves only those numbers.
In 1979 Goldfeld conjectured: 50\% of the quadratic twists of an elliptic curve defined over the rationals have analytic rank zero. In this expository article we present a few recent developments towards the conjecture, especially its first instance - the congruent number elliptic curves.
We take an approach toward counting the number of n for which the curves E_n: y^2=x^3-n^2x have 2-Selmer groups of a given size. This question was also discussed in a pair of Invent. Math. papers by Roger Heath-Brown. We discuss the connection between computing the size of these Selmer groups and verifying cases of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. The key ingredient for the asymptotic formulae is the ``independence'' of the Legendre symbol evaluated at the prime divisors of an integer with exactly k prime factors.
We prove that the rational elliptic curve y^2 = x^3 - n^2x satisfies the full Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for at least 41.9% of positive squarefree integers n equal to 1, 2, or 3 mod 8, and that it satisfies the regular BSD conjecture for at least 55.9% of positive squarefree integers n equal to 5, 6, or 7 mod 8. In particular, at least 55.9% of positive squarefree integers equal to 5, 6, or 7 mod 8 are congruent numbers. These proofs complete an argument started by Tian, Yuan, and Zhang.
For an elliptic curve $E$ over $K$, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture predicts that the rank of Mordell-Weil group $E(K)$ is equal to the order of the zero of $L(E_{/ K},s)$ at $s=1$. In this paper, we shall give a proof for elliptic curves with complex multiplications. The key method of the proof is to reduce the Galois action of infinite order on the Tate module of an elliptic curve to that of finite order by using the $p$-adic Hodge theory. As a corollary, we can determine whether a given natural number is a congruent number (congruent number problem). This problem is one of the olde…
We study the parity of rank of $2$-${\rm Selmer}$ groups associated to $π/3$ and $2π/3$-congruent numbers. Our second result gives some positive densities about $π/3$ and $2π/3$ non-congruent numbers which can support the even part of Goldfeld's conjecture. We give some necessary conditions such that $n$ is non $π/3$-congruent number for elliptic curves $E_n$ whose Shafarevich-Tate group is non-trivial. In the last section, we show that for $n=pq\equiv 5(resp. \ 11)\pmod{24}$, the density of non $π/3$($resp.$ $2π/3$)-congruent numbers is at least 75\%, where $p,q$ are primes.
A conjecture of Mordell states that if $p$ is a prime and $p$ is congruent to $3$ mod $4$, then $p$ does not divide $y$ where $(x,y)$ is the fundamental solution to $x^{2}-py^{2}=1$. The conjecture has been verified for primes not exceeding $10^{7}$. In this article, we show that Mordell's conjecture holds for four conjecturally infinite families of primes.
It is conjectured that every integer N>454 is the sum of seven nonnegative cubes. We prove the conjecture when N is congruent to 2 mod 4. This result, together with a recent proof for 4|N, shows that the conjecture is true for all even N.
Let n and k be natural numbers and let S(n,k) denote the Stirling numbers of the second kind. It is a conjecture of Wilf that the alternating sum \sum_{j=0}^{n} (-1)^{j} S(n,j) is nonzero for all n>2. We prove this conjecture for all n not congruent to 2 and not congruent to 2944838 modulo 3145728 and discuss applications of this result to graph theory, multiplicative partition functions, and the irrationality of p-adic series.
A number of authors have proven explicit versions of Lehmer's conjecture for polynomials whose coefficients are all congruent to 1 modulo m. We prove a similar result for polynomials f(X) that are divisible in (Z/mZ)[X] by a polynomial of the form 1+X+...+X^n for some n > ε*deg(f). We also formulate and prove an analogous statement for elliptic curves.
We report here on the computational verification of a refinement of Zhi-Wei Sun's "1-3-5 conjecture" for all natural numbers up to 105 103 560 126. This, together with a result of two of the authors, completes the proof of that conjecture.
The purpose of this paper is to introduce the concept of reflecting numbers to the realm of number theory and to classify reflecting numbers of certain types. For us, reflecting numbers are coming from congruent numbers, above congruent numbers, and away from congruent numbers. Explicitly speaking, a reflecting number of type $(k,m)$ is the average of two distinct rational $k$th powers, between which the distance is twice another nonzero rational $m$th power. In particular, reflecting numbers of type $(2,2)$ are all congruent numbers and thus will be called reflecting congruent numbers in this…
Recently, George Beck introduced two partition statistics $NT(m,j,n)$ and $M_ω(m,j,n)$, which denote the total number of parts in the partition of $n$ with rank congruent to $m$ modulo $j$ and the total number of ones in the partition of $n$ with crank congruent to $m$ modulo $j$, respectively. Andrews proved a congruence on $NT(m,5,n)$ which was conjectured by Beck. Very recently, Chan, Mao and Osburn established a number of Andrews-Beck type congruences and posed several conjectures involving $NT(m,j,n)$ and $M_ω(m,j,n)$. Some of those conjectures were proved by Chern and Mao. In this paper,…
We show that almost all natural numbers n not divisible by 4, and not congruent to 7 modulo 8, are represented as the sum of three squares, one of which is the square of an integer no larger than (log n)^{1+e} (any e>0). This answers a conjecture of Linnik for almost all natural numbers, and sharpens a conclusion of Bourgain, Rudnick and Sarnak concerning nearest neighbour distances between normalised integral points on the sphere.
We formulate an explicit refinement of Böcherer's conjecture for Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and squarefree level, relating weighted averages of Fourier coefficients with special values of L-functions. To achieve this, we compute the relevant local integrals that appear in the refined global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for Bessel periods as proposed by Yifeng Liu. We note several consequences of our conjecture to arithmetic and analytic properties of L-functions and Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms.
We introduce the notion of Shintani data, which axiomatizes algebraic aspects of Shintani zeta functions. We develop the general theory of Shintani data, and show that the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture follows from the existence of a Shintani datum. Recently, Dasgupta and Spiess proved the order of vanishing part of Gross's conjecture under certain conditions. We give an alternative proof of their result by constructing a certain Shintani datum. We also propose a refinement of Gross's leading term conjecture by using the theory of Shintani data. Out conjecture gives a conjectur…
The purpose of this paper is to formulate and study a common refinement of a version of Stark's conjecture and its $p$-adic analogue, in terms of Fontaine's $p$-adic period ring and $p$-adic Hodge theory. We construct period-ring-valued functions under a generalization of Yoshida's conjecture on the transcendental parts of CM-periods. Then we conjecture a reciprocity law on their special values concerning the absolute Frobenius action. We show that our conjecture implies a part of Stark's conjecture when the base field is an arbitrary real field and the splitting place is its real place. It al…
Let $A/\mathbb{Q}$ be a Jacobian variety and let $F$ be a totally real, tamely ramified, abelian number field. Given a character $ψ$ of $F/\mathbb{Q}$, Deligne's Period Conjecture asserts the algebraicity of the suitably normalised value $\mathcal{L}(A,ψ,1)$ at $z=1$ of the Hasse-Weil-Artin $L$-function of the $ψ$-twist of $A$. We formulate a conjecture regarding the integrality properties of the family of normalised $L$-values $(\mathcal{L}(A,ψ,1))_ψ$, and its relation to the Tate-Shafarevich group of $A$ over $F$. We numerically investigate our conjecture through $p$-adic congruence relation…
Let E be an elliptic curve over the number field Q. In 1988, Koblitz conjectured an asymptotic for the number of primes p for which the cardinality of the group of F_p-points of E is prime. However, the constant occurring in his asymptotic does not take into account that the distributions of the |E(F_p)| need not be independent modulo distinct primes. We shall describe a corrected constant. We also take the opportunity to extend the scope of the original conjecture to ask how often |E(F_p)|/t is prime for a fixed positive integer t, and to consider elliptic curves over arbitrary number fields.…
Let p be an odd prime, let S be a finite set of primes q congruent to 1 mod p but not mod p^2 and let G_S be the Galois group of the maximal p-extension of Q un-ramified outside of S. If r is a continuous homomorphism of G_S into GL_2(Z_p) then under certain conditions on the linking numbers of S we show that r=1 if its reduction mod p is 1. We also show that the reduction of r mod p is 1 if r can be put in triangular form mod p^3.
From some works of P. Furtwängler and H.S. Vandiver, we put the basis of a new cyclotomic approach to Fermat's last theorem for p>3 and to a stronger version called SFLT, by introducing governing fields of the form Q(exp(2 i pi/q-1)) for prime numbers q. We prove for instance that if there exist infinitely many primes q, q not congruent to 1 mod p, q^(p-1) not congruent to 1 mod p^2, such that for Q dividing q in Q(exp(2 i pi /q-1)), we have Q^(1-c) = A^p . (alpha), with alpha congruent to 1 mod p^2 (where c is the complex conjugation), then Fermat's last theorem holds for p. More generally, t…
We propose a conjecture refining the Stark conjecture St(K/k,S) (Tate's formulation) in the function field case. Of course St(K/k,S) in this case is a theorem due to Deligne and independently to Hayes. The novel feature of our conjecture is that it involves two- rather than one-variable algebraic functions over finite fields. Because the conjecture is formulated in the language and framework of Tate's thesis we have powerful standard techniques at our disposal to study it. We build a case for our conjecture by (i) proving a parallel result in the framework of adelic harmonic analysis which we …
We study the Dyson rank function $N(r,t;n)$, the number of partitions with rank congruent to $r$ modulo $t$. We first show that it is monotonic in $n$, and then show that it equidistributed as $n \rightarrow \infty$. Using this result we prove a conjecture of Hou and Jagadeeson on the convexity of $N(r,t;n)$.

We study "quadratic periods" on quaternionic Shimura varieties and formulate an integral refinement of Shimura's conjecture regarding Petersson inner products of automorphic forms that are related by the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence. The main result is that this integral refinement is implied by another conjecture (Conjecture D below) regarding integrality of theta lifts between certain quaternionic unitary groups.
We state the Brumer-Stark conjecture and motivate it from two perspectives. Stark's perspective arose in his attempts to generalize the classical Dirichlet class number formula for the leading term of the Dedekind zeta function at $s=1$ (equivalently, $s=0$). Brumer's perspective arose by generalizing Stickelberger's work regarding the factorization of Gauss sums and the annihilation of class groups of cyclotomic fields. These viewpoints were synthesized by Tate, who stated the Brumer-Stark conjecture in its current form. The conjecture considers a totally real field $F$ and a finite abelian C…
Let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime number congruent to $7$ modulo $8$, with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}$ and Hilbert class field $H$. Suppose $p\nmid [H:K]$ is a prime number which splits in $K$, say $p\mathcal{O}=\mathfrak{p}\mathfrak{p}^*$. Let $H_\infty=HK_\infty$ where $K_\infty$ is the unique $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Write $M(H_\infty)$ for the maximal abelian $p$-extension of $H_\infty$ unramified outside the primes above $\mathfrak{p}$, and set $X(H_\infty)=\mathrm{Gal}(M(H_\infty)/H_\infty)$. In this paper, we establish the…
We propose a refined version of the Sato-Tate conjecture about the spacing distribution of the angle determined for each prime number. We also discuss its implications on $L$-function associated with elliptic curves in the relation to random matrix theory.
On the Gross-Prasad conjecture with its refinement for $\left(\mathrm{SO}\left(5\right),\mathrm{SO}\left(2\right)\right)$ and the generalized Böcherer conjecture
Malle proposed a conjecture for counting the number of $G$-extensions $L/K$ with discriminant bounded above by $X$, denoted $N(K,G;X)$, where $G$ is a fixed transitive subgroup $G\subset S_n$ and $X$ tends towards infinity. We introduce a refinement of Malle's conjecture, if $G$ is a group with a nontrivial Galois action then we consider the set of crossed homomorphisms in $Z^1(K,G)$ (or equivalently $1$-coclasses in $H^1(K,G)$) with bounded discriminant. This has a natural interpretation given by counting $G$-extensions $F/L$ for some fixed $L$ and prescribed extension class $F/L/K$. If $T$ i…
We study whether sufficiently large integers can be written in the form cp+T_x, where p is either zero or a prime congruent to r mod d, and T_x=x(x+1)/2 is a triangular number. We also investigate whether there are infinitely many positive integers not of the form (2^ap-r)/m+T_x with p a prime and x an integer. Besides two theorems, the paper also contains several conjectures together with related analysis and numerical data. One of our conjectures states that each natural number not equal to 216 can be written in the form p+T_x with x an integer and p a prime or zero; another conjecture asser…
Let $p$ be a prime number and $E_{p}$ denote the elliptic curve $y^2=x^3+px$. It is known that for $p$ which is congruent to $1, 9$ modulo $16$, the rank of $E_{p}$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ is equal to $0, 2$. Under the condition that the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture is true, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that the rank is $2$ in terms of the constant term of some polynomial that is defined by a recurrence formula.
We prove that a refinement of Stark's Conjecture formulated by Rubin is true up to primes dividing the order of the Galois group, for finite, abelian extensions of function fields over finite fields. We also show that in the case of constant field extensions a statement stronger than Rubin's holds true.
The central result of this paper is a refinement of Hida's duality theorem between ordinary Lambda-adic modular forms and the universal ordinary Hecke algebra. Specifically, we give a necessary condition for this duality to be integral with respect to particular submodules of the space ordinary Lambda-adic modular forms. This refinement allows us to give a simple proof that the universal ordinary cuspidal Hecke algebra modulo Eisenstein ideal is isomorphic to the Iwasawa algebra modulo an ideal related to the Kubota-Leopoldt p-adic L-function. The motivation behind these results stems from Oht…
We construct a new class of Iwasawa modules, which are the number field analogues of the p-adic realizations of the Picard 1-motives constructed by Deligne in the 1970s and studied extensively from a Galois module structure point of view in our recent work. We prove that the new Iwasawa modules are of projective dimension 1 over the appropriate profinite group rings. In the abelian case, we prove an Equivariant Main Conjecture, identifying the first Fitting ideal of the Iwasawa module in question over the appropriate profinite group ring with the principal ideal generated by a certain equivari…
In this paper we study sum-free subsets of the set $\{1,...,n\}$, that is, subsets of the first $n$ positive integers which contain no solution to the equation $x + y = z$. Cameron and Erdős conjectured in 1990 that the number of such sets is $O(2^{n/2})$. This conjecture was confirmed by Green and, independently, by Sapozhenko. Here we prove a refined version of their theorem, by showing that the number of sum-free subsets of $[n]$ of size $m$ is $2^{O(n/m)} {\lceil n/2 \rceil \choose m}$, for every $1 \le m \le \lceil n/2 \rceil$. For $m \ge \sqrt{n}$, this result is sharp up to the constant…
Let $k$ be a real abelian number field and $p$ an odd prime not dividing $[k:\mathbb{Q}]$. For a natural number $d$, let $E_d$ denote the group of units of $k$ congruent to $1$ modulo $d$, $C_d$ the subgroup of $d$-circular units of $E_d$, and $\mathfrak{C}(d)$ the ray class group of modulus $d$. Let $ρ$ be an irreducible character of $G=\mathrm{Gal}(k/\mathbb{Q})$ over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and $e_ρ \in \mathbb{Z}_p[G]$ the corresponding idempotent. We show that if the ramification index of $p$ in $k$ is less than $p-1$, then $|e_ρ \mathrm{Syl}_p(E_d/C_d) | = |e_ρ \mathrm{Syl}_p(\mathfrak{C}_d)|$ wh…
In this paper we confirm a conjecture of Sun which states that each positive integer is a sum of a square, an odd square and a triangular number. Given any positive integer m, we show that p=2m+1 is a prime congruent to 3 modulo 4 if and only if T_m=m(m+1)/2 cannot be expressed as a sum of two odd squares and a triangular number, i.e., p^2=x^2+8(y^2+z^2) for no odd integers x,y,z. We also show that a positive integer cannot be written as a sum of an odd square and two triangular numbers if and only if it is of the form 2T_m (m>0) with 2m+1 having no prime divisor congruent to 3 modulo 4.
A recent paper by Hanusa and Nath states many conjectures in the study of self-conjugate core partitions. We prove all but two of these conjectures asymptotically by number-theoretic means. We also obtain exact formulas for the number of self-conjugate t-core partitions for "small" t via explicit computations with modular forms. For instance, self-conjugate 9-core partitions are related to counting points on elliptic curves over \Q with conductor dividing 108, and self-conjugate 6-core partitions are related to the representations of integers congruent to 11 mod 24 by 3X^2 + 32Y^2 + 96Z^2, a f…
Let $E$ be an optimal elliptic curve over $\Q$ of conductor $N$ having analytic rank zero, i.e., such that the $L$-function $L_E(s)$ of $E$ does not vanish at $s=1$. Suppose there is another optimal elliptic curve over $\Q$ of the same conductor $N$ whose Mordell-Weil rank is greater than zero and whose associated newform is congruent to the newform associated to $E$ modulo an integer $r$. The theory of visibility then shows that under certain additional hypotheses, $r$ divides the product of the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group of $E$ and the orders of the arithmetic component groups of $E…
