We conjecture the existence of a simple geometric structure underlying questions of reducibility of parabolically induced representations of reductive p-adic groups.
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a split reductive $p$-adic group with connected centre. We show that each Bernstein block in the principal series of $\mathcal{G}$ admits a definite geometric structure, namely that of an extended quotient. For the Iwahori-spherical block, this extended quotient has the form $T//W$ where $T$ is a maximal torus in the Langlands dual group of $\mathcal{G}$ and $W$ is the Weyl group of $\mathcal{G}$.
Let H(G) be the Hecke algebra of a reductive p-adic group G. We formulate a conjecture for the ideals in the Bernstein decomposition of H(G). The conjecture says that each ideal is geometrically equivalent to an algebraic variety. Our conjecture is closely related to Lusztig's conjecture on the asymptotic Hecke algebra. We prove our conjecture for SL(2) and GL(n). We also prove part (1) of our conjecture for the Iwahori ideals of the groups PGL(n) and SO(5).
The author's work with Murnaghan on distinguished tame supercuspidal representations is re-examined using a simplified treatment of Jiu-Kang Yu's construction of tame supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic reductive groups. This leads to a unification of aspects of the theories of distinguished cuspidal representations over $p$-adic and finite fields.
Building on recent work of Ardakov and Wadsley, we prove Schur's lemma for absolutely irreducible admissible p-adic Banach space (respectively locally analytic) representations of p-adic Lie groups. We also prove finiteness results for the endomorphism algebra of an irreducible admissible representation.
In this article we calculate the signature character of certain Hermitian representations of $GL_N(F)$ for a $p$-adic field $F$. We further give a conjectural description for the signature character of unramified representations in terms of Kostka numbers.
The geometric conjecture developed by the authors in [1,2,3,4] applies to the smooth dual Irr(G) of any reductive p-adic group G. It predicts a definite geometric structure - the structure of an extended quotient - for each component in the Bernstein decomposition of Irr(G). In this article, we prove the geometric conjecture for the principal series in any split connected reductive p-adic group G. The proof proceeds via Springer parameters and Langlands parameters. As a consequence of this approach, we establish strong links with the local Langlands correspondence. One important feature of our…
We determine the unitary dual of the geometric graded Hecke algebras with {unequal} parameters which appear in Lusztig's classification of unipotent representations for {exceptional} $p$-adic groups. The largest such algebra is of type $F_4.$ Via the Barbasch-Moy correspondence of unitarity applied to this setting, this is equivalent to the identification of the corresponding unitary unipotent representations with real central character of the $p$-adic groups. In order for this correspondence to be applicable here, we show (following Lusztig's geometric classification, and Barbasch and Moy's o…
In the following article, we give a description of the distingushed irreducible principal series representations of the general linear group over a p-adic field in terms of inducing datum. This provides a counter-example to a conjecture of Jacquet about distinction (Conjecture 1 in U.K Anandavardhanan, "Distinguished non-Archimedean representations ", Proc. Hyderabad Conference on Algebra and Number Theory, 2005, 183-192).
In this paper, we consider representations of $p$-adic classical groups parabolically induced from the products of shifted Speh representations and unitary representations of Arthur type of good parity. We describe how to compute the socles (the maximal semisimple subrepresentations) of these representations. As a consequence, we can determine whether these representations are reducible or not. In particular, our results produce many unitary representations, which are called complementary series.
We consider limits of p-adic Galois representations, study different notions of convergence for such representations, and prove Cebotarev-type density theorems for them.
We give a generalization of Kostant's theorem on Lie algebra cohomology of finite dimensional highest weight representations to some infinite dimensional cases over a $p$-adic family of highest weight distribution representations. For proving this, we develop a theory of eigen orthonormalizable Banach representations of $p$-adic torus over an affinoid algebra, and we construct an eigen orthonormalizable weight completion of the distribution representations.
In this paper, we study the degenerate principal series of a split, simply-connected, simple p-adic group of type $E_7$. We determine the points of reducibility and the maximal semi-simple subrepresentation at each point.
Let $G_n$ denote either the group $Sp(2n, F)$ or $SO(2n+1, F)$ over a non-archimedean local field $F$. We determine the composition series of representations of $G_n$ induced from cuspidal and ladder representations such that the minimal exponent in the cuspidal support of the ladder representation is greater than or equal to $\frac{1}{2}$.
Let $G$ be a real or $p$-adic reductive group. We consider the tempered dual of $G$, and its connected components. For real groups, Wassermann proved in 1987, by noncommutative-geometric methods, that each connected component has a simple geometric structure which encodes the reducibility of induced representations. For $p$-adic groups, each connected component of the tempered dual comes with a compact torus equipped with a finite group action, and we prove that a version of Wassermann's theorem holds true under a certain geometric assumption on the structure of stabilizers for that action. We…
We investigate the mod-$p$ supersingular representations of $GL_2(D)$, where $D$ is a division algebra over a $p$-adic field with characteristic 0, by computing a basis for the vector space of the pro-$p$ Iwahori subgroup invariants of a certain quotient of a compact induction. This work generalizes the results of Hendel and Schein.
In this paper, we study the reducibility of degenerate principal series of the simple, simply-connected exceptional group of type $E_6$. Furthermore, we calculate the maximal semi-simple subrepresentation and quotient of these representations.
Geometry of buildings is used to prove some homological properties of the category of smooth representations of a reductive p-adic group (Kazhdan's "pairing conjecture", Bernstein's description of homological duality in terms of Deligne-Lusztig duality). A different proof had been obtained a little earlier by Schneider and Stuhler.
We generalize the methods of Moy-Prasad, in order to define and study the genuine depth zero representations of some nonlinear covers of reductive groups over $p$-adic local fields. In particular, we construct all depth zero supercuspidal representations of the metaplectic group $Mp_{2n}$ over a $p$-adic field of odd residue characteristic.
In this paper, we study the reducibility of degenerate principal series of the simple, simply-connected exceptional group of type $E_8$. Furthermore, we calculate the maximal semi-simple subrepresentation and quotient of these representations for almost all cases.
On restriction to the maximal compact subgroup $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$, an unramified principal series representation of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,F)$ decomposes into a direct sum of finite-dimensional irreducibles each appearing with finite multiplicity. We describe a coarser decomposition into components which, although reducible in general, capture the equivalences between the irreducible constituents.
We give a classification of irreducible admissible modulo $p$ representations of a split $p$-adic reductive group in terms of supersingular representations. This is a generalization of a theorem of Herzig.
Let F_0 be a non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic and let G be the unramified unitary group U(2,2) defined over F_0. In this paper, we give a classification of the irreducible smooth representations of G of non-integral level using the Hecke algebraic method developed by Allen Moy for GSp(4).
In this paper, we consider the relation between two nonabelian Fourier transforms. The first one is defined in terms of the Langlands-Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters for unipotent elliptic representations of a split p-adic group and the second is defined in terms of the pseudocoefficients of these representations and Lusztig's nonabelian Fourier transform for characters of finite groups of Lie type. We exemplify this relation in the case of the p-adic group of type G_2.
This note contains new short proofs of known results on Speh representations of inner forms of $GL_n$ over a local non archimedean field of any characteristic.
Let F_0 be a non-archimedean local field of odd residual characteristic and let G be the non quasi-split unramified unitary group in four variables defined over F_0. In this paper, we give a classification of the irreducible smooth representations of G of non-integral level using the Hecke algebraic method developed by Howe and Moy.
We introduce an infinite-dimensional $p$-adic affine group and construct its irreducible unitary representation. Our approach follows the one used by Vershik, Gelfand and Graev for the diffeomorphism group, but with modifications made necessary by the fact that the group does not act on the phase space. However it is possible to define its action on some classes of functions.
The Newton strata of a reductive $p$-adic group are introduced in \cite{Newton} and play some role in the representation theory of $p$-adic groups. In this paper, we give a geometric interpretation of the Newton strata.
We study components of the Bernstein category for a p-adic classical group (with p odd) with inertial support a self-dual positive level supercuspidal representation of a Siegel Levi subgroup. More precisely, we use the method of covers to construct a Bushnell-Kutzko type for such a component. A detailed knowledge of the Hecke algebra of the type should have number-theoretic implications.
Cuspidal representations of a reductive p-adic group G over a field of characteristic different from p are relatively injective and projective with respect to extensions that split by a U-equivariant linear map for any subgroup U that is compact modulo the centre. The category of smooth representations over a field whose characteristic does not divide the pro-order of G is the product of the subcategories of cuspidal representations and of subrepresentations of direct sums of parabolically induced representations.
This paper develops various foundational results in the locally analytic representation theory of p-adic groups. In particular, we define the functor ``pass to locally analytic vectors'', which attaches to any continuous representation of a p-adic analytic group on a locally convex p-adic topological vector space the associated space of locally analytic vectors. Using this functor, and the point of view that its construction suggests, we establish some basic facts about admissible locally analytic representations (as defined by Schneider and Teitelbaum). We also introduce the related notion of…
We study homological multiplicities of spherical varieties of reductive group $G$ over a $p$-adic field $F$. Based on Bernstein's decomposition of the category of smooth representations of a $p$-adic group, we introduce a sheaf that measures these multiplicities. We show that these multiplicities are finite whenever the usual mutliplicities are finite, in particular this holds for symmetric varieties, conjectured for all spherical varieties and known for a large class of spherical varieties. Furthermore, we show that the Euler-Poincaré characteristic is constant in families induced from admiss…
We decompose the restriction of ramified principal series representations of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathrm{k})$ to its maximal compact subgroup $K=\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathscr{R})$. Its decomposition is dependent on the degree of ramification of the inducing characters and can be characterized in terms of filtrations of the Iwahori subgroup in $K$. We establish several irreducibility results and illustrate the decomposition with some examples.
Let G be a semisimple almost simple algebraic group defined and split over a nonarchimedean local field K and let V be a unipotent representation of G(K) (for example, an Iwahori-spherical representation). We calculate the character of V at compact very regular elements of G(K) at compact very regular elements of G(K).
We construct all cuspidal l-modular representations of a unitary group in three variables attached to an unramified extension of local fields of odd residual characteristic p with l\neq p. We describe the l-modular principal series and show that the supercuspidal support of an irreducible l-modular representation is unique up to conjugacy.
We describe the supercuspidal representations of Sp(4,F), for F a non-archimedean local field of residual characteristic different from 2, and determine which are generic.
We consider the restriction to $SL_2({\mathbb Q}_p)$ of an irreducible $p$-adic unitary Banach space representation $Π$ of $GL_2({\mathbb Q}_p)$. If $Π$ is associated, via the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence, to an absolutely irreducible 2-dimensional Galois representation $ψ$, then the restriction of $Π$ decomposes as a direct sum of $r \le 2$ irreducible representations. The main result of this paper is that $r$ is equal to the cardinality $s$ of the centralizer in $PGL_2$ of the projective Galois representation $\overlineψ$ associated to $ψ$, and the restriction is multiplicity-free…
The Weil representation is used to construct a minimal type of the two-fold central extension of $\operatorname{Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{Q}_2)$. The corresponding Hecke algebra is shown to be isomorphic to the classical affine Hecke algebra of the split adjoint orthogonal group $\operatorname{SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{Q}_2)$.
Building on prior work, we analyze the decomposition of the restriction of an irreducible representation of SL_2(k), for k a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic, to a maximal compact subgroup K. The pattern of the decomposition varies between principal series and different supercuspidal representations, whereas the K-representations which occur in the "tail end" of these decompositions are precisely those occurring in the decomposition of depth-zero supercuspidal representations. Various applications are considered.
We take some initial steps towards illuminating the (hypothetical) $p$-adic local Langlands functoriality principle relating Galois representations of a $p$-adic field $L$ and admissible unitary Banach space representations of $G(L)$ when $G$ is a split reductive group over $L$. The outline of our work is derived from Breuil's remarkable insights into the nature of the correspondence between 2-dimensional crystalline Galois representations of the Galois group of $\Qdss_p$ and Banach space representations of $GL_{2}(\Qdss_p)$.
Let $K/F$ be a quadratic extension of $p$-adic fields, and $n$ a positive integer. A smooth irreducible representation of the group $GL(n,K)$ is said to be distinguished, if it admits on its space a nonzero $GL(n,F)$-invariant linear form. In the present work, we classify genric distinguished representations of the group $GL(n,K)$ in terms of inducing quasi-square-integrable representations. This has as a consequence the truth of the expected equality between the Rankin-Selberg type Asai $L$-function of a generic representation, and the Asai $L$-function of its Langlands parameter.
Let $G$ be a reductive $p$-adic group. We give a short proof of the fact that $G$ always admits supercuspidal complex representations. This result has already been established by A. Kret using the Deligne-Lusztig theory of representations of finite groups of Lie type. Our argument is of a different nature and is self-contained. It is based on the Harish-Chandra theory of cusp forms and it ultimately relies on the existence of elliptic maximal tori in $G$.
C. Jantzen has defined a correspondence which attaches to an irreducible representation of a classical $p$-adic group, a finite set of irreducible representations of classical $p$-adic groups supported in a single or in two cuspidal lines (the case of the single cuspidal lines is interesting for the unitarizability). It would be important to know if this correspondence preserves the unitarizability (in both directions). The main aim of this paper is to complete the proof started in the previous paper of the fact that if we have an irreducible unitarizable representation $π$ of a classical $p$-…
Let $F$ be a non archimedean local field of characteristic zero, we give a classification of generic representations of $GL(n,F)$ distinguished by a maximal Levi subgroup, in terms of inducing discrete series.
The main question we are going to address in this paper is: How much does the representation theory of the $p$-adic group $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathcal{D})$ depend on the $p$-adic division algebra $\mathcal{D}$? Let $\mathcal{D}$ be a central division algebra defined over some locally compact non-archimedean local field. Using Bushnell-Kutzko theory of types and Sécherre-Stevens decomposition of spherical Hecke algebras associated to types, we obtain that the cuspidal blocks in the Bernstein decomposition of the category $\mathcal{R} \left( \mathrm{GL}_n(\mathcal{D}) \right)$ of smooth complex repre…
In the case of p-adic general linear groups, each irreducible representation is parabolically induced by a tensor product of irreducible representations supported by cuspidal lines. One gets in this way a parameterization of the irreducible representations of p-adic general linear groups by irreducible representations supported by cuspidal lines. It is obvious that in this correspondence an irreducible representation of a p-adic general linear group is unitarizable if and only if all the corresponding irreducible representations supported by cuspidal lines are unitarizable. C. Jantzen has defi…
We prove that for every Bushnell-Kutzko type that satisfies a certain rigidity assumption, the equivalence of categories between the corresponding Bernstein component and the category of modules for the Hecke algebra of the type induces a bijection between irreducible unitary representations in the two categories. This is a generalization of the unitarity criterion of Barbasch and Moy for representations with Iwahori fixed vectors.
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field, and $K$ a quadratic extension of $F$. Using Tadic's classification of the unitary dual of $GL(n,K)$, we give the list of irreducible unitary representations of this group distinguished by $GL(n,F)$, in terms of distinguished discrete series. As it is known that a generalised Steinberg representation $St(k,ρ)$ is distinguished if and only if the cuspidal representation $ρ$ is $η^{k-1}$-distinguished, for $η$ the character of $F^*$ with kernel the norms of $K^*$, this actually gives a classification of distinguished unitary representations in terms of distinguished c…
We develop the theory of locally analytic representations of compact $p$-adic Lie groups from the perspective of the theory of condensed mathematics of Clausen and Scholze. As an application, we generalise Lazard's isomorphisms between continuous, locally analytic and Lie algebra cohomology to solid representations. We also prove a comparison result between the group cohomology of a solid representation and of its analytic vectors.
We give a criterion of the semisimplicity of a p-adic unitary representation of a topological monoid by the reduction of the associated operator algebra.
Let G be a simple adjoint group and let K=k((ε)) where k is an algebraic closure of a finite field F_q. In this paper we define some geometric objects on G(K) which are similar to the (cohomology sheaves of) the unipotent character sheaves on G(k). Using these geometric objects we define the unipotent almost characters of G(K_0) where K_0=F_q((ε)) and state some conjectures relating them to the characters of unipotent representations of G(K_0).
These are expanded notes of some lectures given by the author for a workshop held at the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore in June, 2010, giving an exposition on the modular representations of finite groups of Lie type and $p$-adic groups, and the modular Langlands correspondence. These notes give an overview of the subject with several examples.
A symmetric space analogue of Casselman's criterion for square integrability of representations of a p-adic group is established. It is described in terms of exponents of Jacquet modules along parabolic subgroups associated to the symmetric space.
We propose a definition of characters in the context of Schneider-Teitelbaum's theory of locally analytic representations of p-adic reductive groups. This character will be a function on a compact subgroup of a maximal torus of the reductive group in question. As an example we treat the locally analytic principal series of SL(2,Q_p).
