A symmetric space analogue of Casselman's criterion for square integrability of representations of a p-adic group is established. It is described in terms of exponents of Jacquet modules along parabolic subgroups associated to the symmetric space.

Let X be a smooth real algebraic variety. Let $ξ$ be a distribution on it. One can define the singular support of $ξ$ to be the singular support of the $D_X$-module generated by $ξ$ (some times it is also called the characteristic variety). A powerful property of the singular support is that it is a coisotropic subvariety of $T^*X$. This is the integrability theorem (see [KKS, Mal, Gab]). This theorem turned out to be useful in representation theory of real reductive groups (see e.g. [AG_AMOT, AS, Say]). The aim of this paper is to give an analog of this theorem to the non-Archimedean case. Th…
This paper has two aims. The first is to give a description of irreducible tempered representations of classical p-adic groups which follows naturally the classification of irreducible square integrable representations modulo cuspidal data obtained by C. Moeglin and the author. The second aim of the paper is to give description of an invariant (partially defined function) of irreducible square integrable representation of a classical p-adic group (defined by C. Moeglin using embeddings) in terms of subquotients of Jacquet modules. As an application, we describe behavior of partially defined fu…
Let $G$ be a reductive group and $θ$ an involution on $G$, both defined over a $p$-adic field. We provide a criterion for $G^θ$-integrability of matrix coefficients of representations of $G$ in terms of their exponents along $θ$-stable parabolic subgroups. The group case reduces to Casselman's square-integrability criterion. As a consequence we assert that certain families of symmetric spaces are strongly tempered in the sense of Sakellaridis and Venkatesh. For some other families our result implies that matrix coefficients of all irreducible, discrete series representations are $G^θ$-integrab…
We provide an explicit construction of representations in the discrete spectrum of two $p$-adic symmetric spaces. We consider $\mathbf{GL}_n(F) \times \mathbf{GL}_n(F) \backslash \mathbf{GL}_{2n}(F)$ and $\mathbf{GL}_n(F) \backslash \mathbf{GL}_n(E)$, where $E$ is a quadratic Galois extension of a nonarchimedean local field $F$ of characteristic zero and odd residual characteristic. The proof of the main result involves an application of a symmetric space version of Casselman's Criterion for square integrability due to Kato and Takano.
In a series of recent papers we extended the notion of square integrability, for representations of nilpotent Lie groups, to that of stepwise square integrability. There we discussed a number of applications based on the fact that nilradicals of minimal parabolic subgroups of real reductive Lie groups are stepwise square integrable. Here, in Part I, we prove stepwise square integrability for nilradicals of arbitrary parabolic subgroups of real reductive Lie groups. This is technically more delicate than the case of minimal parabolics. We further discuss applications to Plancherel formulae and …
We determine test vectors and explicit formulas for all Bessel models for those Iwahori-spherical representations of GSp(4) over a p-adic field that have non-zero vectors fixed under the Siegel congruence subgroup.
Zamolodchikov periodicity is periodicity of certein recursions associated with box products $X \square Y$ of two finite type Dynkin diagrams. We suggest an affine analog of Zamolodchikov periodicity, which we call Zamolodchikov integrability. We conjecture that it holds for products $X \square Y$, where $X$ is a finite type Dynkin diagram and $Y$ is an extended Dynkin diagram. We prove this conjecture for the case of $A_m \square A_{2n-1}^{(1)}$. The proof employs cluster structures in certain classical rings of invariants, previously studied by S. Fomin and the author.
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a local field $F$ of characteristic $0$. By Harish-Chandra's regularity theorem, the character $Θ_π$ of an irreducible, admissible representation $π$ of $G$ is given by a locally integrable function $θ_π$ on $G$. It is a natural question whether $θ_π$ has better integrability properties, namely, whether it is locally $L^{1+ε}$-integrable for some $ε>0$. It turns out that the answer is positive, and this gives rise to a new singularity invariant of representations $ε_{\star}(π):=\sup\left\{ ε:θ_π\in L_{Loc}^{1+ε}(G)\right\} $, which we explore in this paper. We…
We prove an integral formula computing multiplicities of square-integrable representations relative to Galois pairs over $p$-adic fields and we apply this formula to verify two consequences of a conjecture of Dipendra Prasad. One concerns the exact computation of the multiplicity of the Steinberg representation and the other the invariance of multiplicities by transfer among inner forms.
Let G be a reductive group over a non-Archimedean local field. Then the canonical functor from the derived category of smooth tempered representations of G to the derived category of all smooth representations of G is fully faithful. Here we consider representations on bornological vector spaces. As a consequence, if V and W are two tempered irreducible representations and if V or W is square-integrable, then Ext_G^n(V,W) vanishes for all n>0. We use this to prove in full generality a formula for the formal dimension of square-integrable representations due to Schneider and Stuhler.
Let G(K) be the group of K-rational points of a connected adjoint simple algebraic group defined over a non-archimedean local field K. In this paper we classify the unipotent representations of G(K) in terms of the geometry of the Langlands dual group. (This was known earlier in the special case where G(K) is an inner form of a split group.) We also determine which representations are tempered or square integrable.
We provide a purely local computation of the (elliptic) twisted (by "transpose-inverse") character of the representation π=I(\1) of PGL(3) over a p-adic field induced from the trivial representation of the maximal parabolic subgroup. This computation is independent of the theory of the symmetric square lifting of [IV] of automorphic and admissible representations of SL(2) to PGL(3). It leads to a proof of the (unstable) fundamental lemma in the theory of the symmetric square lifting, namely that corresponding spherical functions (on PGL(2) and PGL(3)) are matching: they have matching orbital i…
Let $K/F$ be a quadratic extension of $p$-adic fields, and $n$ a positive integer. A smooth irreducible representation of the group $GL(n,K)$ is said to be distinguished, if it admits on its space a nonzero $GL(n,F)$-invariant linear form. In the present work, we classify genric distinguished representations of the group $GL(n,K)$ in terms of inducing quasi-square-integrable representations. This has as a consequence the truth of the expected equality between the Rankin-Selberg type Asai $L$-function of a generic representation, and the Asai $L$-function of its Langlands parameter.
Let $π_1,\ldots,π_k$ be smooth irreducible representations of $p$-adic general linear groups. We prove that the parabolic induction product $π_1\times\cdots\times π_k$ has a unique irreducible quotient whose Langlands parameter is the sum of the parameters of all factors (cyclicity property), assuming that the same property holds for each of the products $π_i\times π_j$ ($i<j$), and that for all but at most two representations $π_i\times π_i$ remains irreducible (square-irreducibility property). Our technique applies the recently devised Kashiwara-Kim notion of a normal sequence of modules for…
Let $K/F$ be a quadratic extension of $p$-adic fields, $σ$ the nontrivial element of the Galois group of $K$ over $F$, and $π$ a quasi-square-integrable representation of $GL(n,K)$. Denoting by $π^{\vee}$ the smooth contragredient of $π$, and by $π^σ$ the representation $π\circ σ$, we show that the representation of $GL(2n, K)$ obtained by normalized parabolic induction of the representation $π^\vee \otimes π^σ$ is distinguished with respect to $GL(2n,F)$. This is a step towards the classification of distinguished generic representations of general linear groups over $p$-adic fields.
Let $π$ be an irreducible, complex, smooth representation of $GL_n$ over a local non-archimedean (skew) field. Assuming $π$ has regular Zelevinsky parameters, we give a geometric necessary and sufficient criterion for the irreducibility of the parabolic induction of $π\otimesπ$ to $GL_{2n}$. The latter irreducibility property is the $p$-adic analogue of a special case of the notion of "real representations" introduced by Leclerc and studied recently by Kang-Kashiwara-Kim-Oh (in the context of KLR or quantum affine algebras). Our criterion is in terms of singularities of Schubert varieties of t…
