Let G be a reductive group over a non-Archimedean local field. Then the canonical functor from the derived category of smooth tempered representations of G to the derived category of all smooth representations of G is fully faithful. Here we consider representations on bornological vector spaces. As a consequence, if V and W are two tempered irreducible representations and if V or W is square-integrable, then Ext_G^n(V,W) vanishes for all n>0. We use this to prove in full generality a formula for the formal dimension of square-integrable representations due to Schneider and Stuhler.
We form wave packets in the Schwartz space of a reductive p-adic symmetric space for certain famillies of tempered functions. We show how to construct such families from Eisenstein integrals.
We obtain the Plancherel decomposition for a reductive symmetric space in the sense of representation theory. Our starting point is the Plancherel formula for spherical Schwartz functions, obtained in part I (math.RT/0107063). The formula for Schwartz functions involves Eisenstein integrals obtained by a residual calculus. In the present paper we identify these integrals as matrix coefficients of the generalized principal series.
Let $G$ be an almost linear Nash group, namely, a Nash group that admits a Nash homomorphism with finite kernel to some $\GL_k(\mathbb R)$. A smooth \Fre representation $V$ with moderate growth of $G$ is called homologically finite if the Schwartz homology $\oH_{i}^{\CS}(G;V)$ is finite dimensional for every $i\in\BZ$. We show that the space of Schwartz sections $Γ^ς(X,\SE)$ of a tempered $G$-vector bundle $(X,\SE)$ is homologically finite as a representation of $G$, under some mild assumptions.
Let $G$ be a reductive group over a local field $F$ of characteristic zero, Archimedean or not. Let $X$ be a $G$-space. In this paper we study the existence of generalized Whittaker quotients for the space of Schwartz functions on $X$, considered as a representation of $G$. We show that the set of nilpotent elements of the dual space to the Lie algebra such that the corresponding generalized Whittaker quotient does not vanish contains the nilpotent part of the image of the moment map, and lies in the closure of this image. This generalizes recent results of Prasad and Sakellaridis. Applying ou…
Geometry of buildings is used to prove some homological properties of the category of smooth representations of a reductive p-adic group (Kazhdan's "pairing conjecture", Bernstein's description of homological duality in terms of Deligne-Lusztig duality). A different proof had been obtained a little earlier by Schneider and Stuhler.
We prove the Plancherel formula for spherical Schwartz functions on a reductive symmetric space. Our starting point is an inversion formula for spherical smooth compactly supported functions. The latter formula was earlier obtained from the most continuous part of the Plancherel formula by means of a residue calculus. In the course of the present paper we also obtain new proofs of the uniform tempered estimates for normalized Eisenstein integrals and of the Maass-Selberg relations satisfied by the associated C-functions.
For a connected reductive group $ G $ defined over a number field $ k $, we construct the Schwartz space $ \mathcal{S}(G(k)\backslash G(\mathbb{A})) $. This space is an adelic version of Casselman's Schwartz space $ \mathcal{S}(Γ\backslash G_\infty) $, where $ Γ$ is a discrete subgroup of $ G_\infty:=\prod_{v\in V_\infty}G(k_v) $. We study the space of tempered distributions $ \mathcal{S}(G(k)\backslash G(\mathbb A))' $ and investigate applications to automorphic forms on $ G(\mathbb A) $. In particular, we study the representation $ \left(r',\mathcal{S}(G(k)\backslash G(\mathbb{A}))'\right) $…
In this largely expository paper we extend properties of the homological duality functor $RHom_{\mathcal H}(-,{\mathcal H})$ where ${\mathcal H}$ is the Hecke algebra of a reductive $p$-adic group, to the case where it is the Hecke algebra of a finite central extension of a reductive $p$-adic group. The most important properties being that $RHom_{\mathcal H}(-,{\mathcal H})$ is concentrated in a single degree for irreducible representations and that it gives rise to Schneider--Stuhler duality for Ext groups (a Serre functor like property). Along the way we also study Grothendieck--Serre dualit…
This paper revisits the study of canonical wave-packets on a real reductive groups, sequel to its construction in a recent manuscript of Oyadare. Among other results, we prove some decompositions of the Schwartz-type algebras using the canonical wave-packets.
Let G be a reductive group over a non-archimedean local field and let S(G) be its Schwartz algebra. We compare Ext-groups of tempered G-representations in several module categories: smooth G-representations, algebraic S(G)-modules, bornological S(G)-modules and an exact category of S(G)-modules on LF-spaces which contains all admissible S(G)-modules. We simplify the proofs of known comparison theorems for these Ext-groups, due to Meyer and Schneider-Zink. Our method is based on the Bruhat-Tits building of G and on analytic properties of the Schneider-Stuhler resolutions.
In this paper we study homological properties of modules over an affine Hecke algebra H. In particular we prove a comparison result for higher extensions of tempered modules when passing to the Schwartz algebra S, a certain topological completion of the affine Hecke algebra. The proof is self-contained and based on a direct construction of a bounded contraction of certain standard resolutions of H-modules. This construction applies for all positive parameters of the affine Hecke algebra. This is an important feature since it is an ingredient to analyse how the irreducible discrete series repre…
We study homological multiplicities of spherical varieties of reductive group $G$ over a $p$-adic field $F$. Based on Bernstein's decomposition of the category of smooth representations of a $p$-adic group, we introduce a sheaf that measures these multiplicities. We show that these multiplicities are finite whenever the usual mutliplicities are finite, in particular this holds for symmetric varieties, conjectured for all spherical varieties and known for a large class of spherical varieties. Furthermore, we show that the Euler-Poincaré characteristic is constant in families induced from admiss…
For a split reductive algebraic group, this paper observes a homological interpretation for Weyl module multiplicities in Jantzen's sum formula. This interpretation involves an Euler characteristic built from Ext groups between integral Weyl modules. The new interpretation makes transparent For GL_n (and conceivable for other classical groups) a certain invariance of Jantzen's sum formula under "Howe duality" in the sense of Adamovich and Rybnikov. For GL_n a simple and explicit general formula is derived for the Euler characteristic between an arbitrary pair of integral Weyl modules. In light…
Let $F$ be a local non-archimedian field and $G$ be the group of $F$-points of a split connected reductive group over $F$. In a previous aricle we defined an algebra $\mathcal J(G)$ of functions on $G$ which contains the Hecke algebra $\mathcal H(G)$ and is contained in the Harish-Chandra Schwartz algebra $\mathcal C(G)$. We consider $\mathcal J(G)$ as an algebraic analog the algebra $\mathcal C(G)$. Given a parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$ with a Levi subgroup $M$ and the unipotent radical $U_P$ we write $X_P:=G/U_P$. In this paper we study two versions of the Schwartz space of $X_P$. The first …
Let $H$ be a real algebraic group acting equivariantly with finitely many orbits on a real algebraic manifold $X$ and a real algebraic bundle $\mathcal{E}$ on $X$. Let $\mathfrak{h}$ be the Lie algebra of $H$. Let $\mathcal{S}(X,\mathcal{E})$ be the space of Schwartz sections of $\mathcal{E}$. We prove that $\mathfrak{h}\mathcal{S}(X,\mathcal{E})$ is a closed subspace of $\mathcal{S}(X,\mathcal{E})$ of finite codimension. We give an application of this result in the case when $H$ is a real spherical subgroup of a real reductive group $G$. We deduce an equivalence of two old conjectures due to …
In a series of recent papers we extended the notion of square integrability, for representations of nilpotent Lie groups, to that of stepwise square integrability. There we discussed a number of applications based on the fact that nilradicals of minimal parabolic subgroups of real reductive Lie groups are stepwise square integrable. Here, in Part I, we prove stepwise square integrability for nilradicals of arbitrary parabolic subgroups of real reductive Lie groups. This is technically more delicate than the case of minimal parabolics. We further discuss applications to Plancherel formulae and …
We prove homological mirror symmetry for the universal centralizer $J_G$ (a.k.a the Toda space), associated to any complex reductive Lie group $G$. The A-side is a partially wrapped Fukaya category on $J_G$, and the B-side is the category of coherent sheaves on the categorical quotient of a dual maximal torus by the Weyl group action (with some modification if the center of $G$ is not connected).
Let G be the group of points of a split reductive algebraic group over a local field k and let X=G/U where U is a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. In this paper we construct certain canonical G-invariant space S(X) (called the Schwartz space of X) of functions on X, which is an extension of the space of smooth compactly supported functions on X. We show that the space of all elements of S(X) invariant under the Iwahori subgroup of G coincides with space generated by the elements of the so called periodic Lusztig's basis, introduced recently by G.Lusztig. We also give an interpretation of this …
Let G be a reductive p-adic group, H(G) its Hecke algebra and S(G) its Schwartz algebra. We will show that these algebras have the same periodic cyclic homology. This might be used to provide an alternative proof of the Baum-Connes conjecture for G, modulo torsion. As preparation for our main theorem we prove two results that have independent interest. Firstly a general comparison theorem for the periodic cyclic homology of finite type algebras and certain Fréchet completions thereof. Secondly a refined form of the Langlands classification for G, which clarifies the relation between the smooth…
Let $G$ be a split reductive $p$-adic group. Let ${\mathcal H}(G)$ be its Hecke algebra and let ${\mathcal C}(G)\supset {\mathcal H}(G)$ be the Harish-Chandra Schwartz algebra. The purpose of this note is to give a spectral interpretation of Lusztig's asymptotic Hecke algebra $J$ (which contains the Iwahori part of ${\mathcal H}(G)$ as a subalgebra), which shows that $J$ is a subalgebra of ${\mathcal C} (G)$. This spectral description also allows to define a version of $J$ beyond the Iwahori component - i.e. we define certain subalgebra ${\mathcal J}(G)$ of ${\mathcal C}(G)$ which contains ${\…
Let $G$ be a split connected reductive group defined over a nonarchimedean local field of residual characteristic $p$, and let $\mathcal{H}$ be the pro-$p$-Iwahori--Hecke algebra associated to a fixed choice of pro-$p$-Iwahori subgroup. We explore projective resolutions of simple right $\mathcal{H}$-modules. In particular, subject to a mild condition on $p$, we give a classification of simple right $\mathcal{H}$-modules of finite projective dimension, and consequently show that "most" simple modules have infinite projective dimension.
Let S(X) be the Schwartz space of compactly supported smooth functions on the p-adic points of a spherical variety X, and let C(X) be the space of Harish-Chandra Schwartz functions. Under assumptions on the spherical variety, which are satisfied when it is symmetric, we prove Paley-Wiener theorems for the two spaces, characterizing them in terms of their spectral transforms. As a corollary, we get relative analogs of the smooth and tempered Bernstein centers -- rings of multipliers for S(X) and C(X). When X= a reductive group, our theorem for C(X) specializes to the well-known theorem of Haris…
Let $G$ be a reductive group and $X$ a smooth projective curve. We prove that, for $G$ classical and $σ$ an arbitrary $G$-local system on $X$, the space $\overline{\operatorname{Op}}^{gen}_{G,σ}$ of generic extended oper structures on $σ$ is homologically contractible. This contractibility result is crucial for the proof of the geometric Langlands conjecture.
Schwartz functions, or measures, are defined on any smooth semi-algebraic ("Nash") manifold, and are known to form a cosheaf for the semi-algebraic restricted topology. We extend this definition to smooth semi-algebraic stacks, which are defined as geometric stacks in the category of Nash manifolds. Moreover, when those are obtained from algebraic quotient stacks of the form X/G, with X a smooth affine variety and G a reductive group defined over a global field k, we define, whenever possible, an "evaluation map" at each semisimple k-point of the stack, without using truncation methods. This c…
Actions of algebraic groups on DG categories provide a convenient, unifying framework in some parts of geometric representation theory, especially the representation theory of reductive Lie algebras. We extend this theory to loop groups and affine Lie algebras, extending previous work of Beraldo, Gaitsgory and the author. Along the way, we introduce some subjects of independent interest: ind-coherent sheaves of infinite type indschemes, topological DG algebras, and weak actions of group indschemes on categories. We also present a new construction of semi-infinite cohomology for affine Lie alge…
We construct analogues of FI-modules where the role of the symmetric group is played by the general linear groups and the symplectic groups over finite rings and prove basic structural properties such as Noetherianity. Applications include a proof of the Lannes--Schwartz Artinian conjecture in the generic representation theory of finite fields, very general homological stability theorems with twisted coefficients for the general linear and symplectic groups over finite rings, and representation-theoretic versions of homological stability for congruence subgroups of the general linear group, th…
According to a program of Braverman, Kazhdan and Ngô Bao Châu, for a large class of split unramified reductive groups $G$ and representations $ρ$ of the dual group $\hat{G}$, the unramified local $L$-factor $L(s,π,ρ)$ can be expressed as the trace of $π(f_{ρ,s})$ for a suitable function $f_{ρ,s}$ with non-compact support whenever $\mathrm{Re}(s) \gg 0$. Such functions can be plugged into the trace formula to study certain sums of automorphic $L$-functions. It also fits into the conjectural framework of Schwartz spaces for reductive monoids due to Sakellaridis, who coined the term basic functio…
Recently, two of the authors of this paper constructed cyclic cocycles on Harish-Chandra's Schwartz algebra of linear reductive Lie groups that detect all information in the $K$-theory of the corresponding group $C^*$-algebra. The main result in this paper is an index formula for the pairings of these cocycles with equivariant indices of elliptic operators for proper, cocompact actions. This index formula completely determines such equivariant indices via topological expressions.
Let G be a reductive p-adic group and let H(G)^s be a Bernstein block of the Hecke algebra of G. We consider two important topological completions of H(G)^s: a direct summand S(G)^s of the Harish-Chandra--Schwartz algebra of G and a two-sided ideal C*_r (G)^s of the reduced C*-algebra of G. These are useful for the study of all tempered smooth G-representations. We suppose that H(G)^s is Morita equivalent to an affine Hecke algebra H(R,q) -- as is known in many cases. The latter algebra also has a Schwartz completion S(R,q) and a C*-completion C*_r (R,q), both defined in terms of the underlyin…
Let G be a connected real reductive group. Orbit integrals define traces on the group algebra of G. We introduce a construction of higher orbit integrals in the direction of higher cyclic cocycles on the Harish-Chandra Schwartz algebra of G. We analyze these higher orbit integrals via Fourier transform by expressing them as integrals on the tempered dual of G. We obtain explicit formulas for the pairing between the higher orbit integrals and the K-theory of the reduced group C*-algebra, and discuss their applications to representation theory and K-theory.
Let $\mathrm G / F$ be a reductive split $p$-adic group and let $\mathrm U$ be the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup. We study the cohomology with trivial $\mathbb Z_p$-coefficients of the profinite nilpotent group $N = \mathrm U(\mathcal O_F)$ and its Lie algebra $\mathfrak n$, by extending a classical result of Kostant to our integral $p$-adic setup. The techniques used are a combination of results from group theory, algebraic groups and homological algebra.
Let F be a locally compact nonarchimedean field with residue characteristic p and G the group of F-rational points of a connected split reductive group over F. For k an arbitrary field, we study the homological properties of the Iwahori-Hecke k-algebra H' and of the pro-p Iwahori-Hecke k-algebra H of G. We prove that both of these algebras are Gorenstein rings with self-injective dimension bounded above by the rank of G. If G is semisimple, we also show that this upper bound is sharp, that both H and H' are Auslander-Gorenstein and that there is a duality functor on the finitely generated modu…
In a recent paper we found conditions for a nilpotent Lie group $N$ to have a filtration by normal subgroups whose successive quotients have square integrable representations, and such that these square integrable representations fit together nicely to give an explicit construction of Plancherel almost all representations of $N$. That resulted in explicit character formulae, Plancherel formulae and multiplicity formulae. We also showed that nilradicals $N$ of minimal parabolic subgroups $P = MAN$ enjoy that "stepwise square integrable" property. Here we extend those results to direct limits of…
We study the derived representation scheme DRep_n(A) parametrizing the n-dimensional representations of an associative algebra A over a field of characteristic zero. We show that the homology of DRep_n(A) is isomorphic to the Chevalley-Eilenberg homology of the current Lie coalgebra gl_n^*(C) defined over a Koszul dual coalgebra of A. We extend this isomorphism to representation schemes of Lie algebras: for a finite-dimensional reductive Lie algebra g, we define the derived affine scheme DRep_g(a) parametrizing the representations (in g) of a Lie algebra a; we show that the homology of DRep_g(…
