Let G be the group of points of a split reductive algebraic group over a local field k and let X=G/U where U is a maximal unipotent subgroup of G. In this paper we construct certain canonical G-invariant space S(X) (called the Schwartz space of X) of functions on X, which is an extension of the space of smooth compactly supported functions on X. We show that the space of all elements of S(X) invariant under the Iwahori subgroup of G coincides with space generated by the elements of the so called periodic Lusztig's basis, introduced recently by G.Lusztig. We also give an interpretation of this space in terms of certain equivariant K-group (this was also done by G.Lusztig). Finally we present a global analogue of S(X) which allows us to give a somewhat untraditional treatment of the theory of principal Eisenstein series.
We define Schwartz functions, tempered functions and tempered distributions on (possibly singular) real algebraic varieties. We prove that all classical properties of these spaces, defined previously on affine spaces and on Nash manifolds, also hold in the case of affine real algebraic varieties, and give partial results for the non-affine case.
Here we simplify the proof of the de Rham theorem for Schwartz functions on affine Nash manifolds and generalize the result to the case of non affine Nash manifolds.
We prove that every rational trinomial affine hypersurface admits a horizontal polynomial curve. This result provides an explicit non-trivial polynomial solution to a trinomial equation. Also we show that a trinomial affine hypersurface admits a Schwartz-Halphen curve if and only if the trinomial comes from a platonic triple. It is a generalization of Schwartz-Halphen's Theorem for Pham-Brieskorn surfaces.
Schwartz functions, or measures, are defined on any smooth semi-algebraic ("Nash") manifold, and are known to form a cosheaf for the semi-algebraic restricted topology. We extend this definition to smooth semi-algebraic stacks, which are defined as geometric stacks in the category of Nash manifolds. Moreover, when those are obtained from algebraic quotient stacks of the form X/G, with X a smooth affine variety and G a reductive group defined over a global field k, we define, whenever possible, an "evaluation map" at each semisimple k-point of the stack, without using truncation methods. This c…
The notion of gluing of abelian categories was introduced by Kazhdan and Laumon in an attempt of another geometric construction of representations of finite Chevalley groups; the approach was later developed by Polishchuk and Braverman. We observe that this notion of gluing is a particular case of a general categorical construction (used also by Kontsevich and Rosenberg to define "noncommutative schemes"). We prove a conjecture of Kazhdan which says that the D-module counterpart of the Kazhdan-Laumon gluing construction produces a category equivalent to modules over the ring $\mathcal D$ of gl…
We study the ring of differential operators D(X) on the basic affine space X=G/U of a complex semisimple group G with maximal unipotent subgroup U. One of the main results shows that the cohomology group H^*(X,O_X) decomposes as a finite direct sum of non-isomorphic simple X-modules, each of which is isomorphic to a twist of O(X) by an automorphism of D(X). We also use D(X) to study the properties of D(Y) for highest weight varieties Y. For example we prove under mild hypotheses that Y is D-simple in the sense that O(Y) is a simple D(Y)-module and produce an irreducible G-module of differentia…
Let $G$ be the Weil restriction of a general linear group. By extending the method of semi-modules developed by de Jong, Oort, Viehmann and Hamacher, we obtain a stratification of the affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $G$ (in the affine Grassmannian) attached to a minuscule coweight and a basic element. As an application, we verify a conjecture by Chen and Zhu on irreducible components of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $G$.
When the base ring is not a field, power reductivity of a group scheme is a basic notion, intimately tied with finite generation of subrings of invariants. Geometric reductivity is weaker and less pertinent in this context. We give a survey of these properties and their connections.
We develop a basic theory of affine group dg-schemes, their Lie algebraic counterparts and linear representations. We prove Tannaka type reconstruction theorems that an affine group dg-scheme can be recovered from the dg-tensor category of its linear representations as well as from the rigid dg-tensor category of its finite dimensional linear representations along with the forgetful functors to the underlying dg-tensor category of cochain complexes.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of type $A$ or $D$ defined over $\C$ and $T$ be a maximal torus of $G$. For a dominant coweight $λ$ of $G$, the $T$-fixed point subscheme $(\bar{Gr}_G^λ)^T$ of the Schubert variety $\bar{Gr}_G^λ$ in the affine Grassmannian $Gr_G$ is a finite scheme. We prove that there is a natural isomorphism between the dual of the level one affine Demazure module corresponding to $λ$ and the ring of functions (twisted by certain line bundle on $Gr_G$) of $(\bar{Gr}_G^λ)^T$. We use this fact to give a geometric proof of the Frenkel-Kac-Segal isomorphism between basic repre…
This paper is devoted to the study of the gluing construction for perverse sheaves on $G/U$ introduced by Kazhdan and Laumon ($G$ is a semisimple gourp, $U$ is the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup in $G$). Kazhdan and Laumon conjectured that all Ext-groups in the glued category are finite-dimensional and that global cohomological dimension is finite. We prove the first part of this conjecture. In the appendix we show that the simple object in the glued category corresponding to the constant sheaf has infinite cohomological dimension, thus disproving the second part of the above conjecture…
By extending the method of semi-modules developed by de Jong, Oort, Viehmann and Hamacher, we introduce a stratification for the affne Deligne-Lusztig variety (in the affne Grassmannian) attached to attached to a minuscule cocharacter and a basic element. As an application, we complete the proof of a conjecture on the irreducible components of affne Deligne-Lusztig varieties, due to Miaofen Chen and Xinwen Zhu.
The goal of this paper is to construct a Frobenius splitting on $G/U$ via the Poisson geometry of $(G/U,π_{G/U})$, where $G$ is a semi-simple algebraic group of classical type defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 3$, $U$ is the uniradical of a Borel subgroup of $G$ and $π_{G/U}$ is the standard Poisson structure on $G/U$. We first study the Poisson geometry of $(G/U,π_{G/U})$. Then, we develop a general theory for Frobenius splittings on $\mathbb{T}$-Poisson varieties, where $\mathbb{T}$ is an algebraic torus. In particular, we prove that compatibly split subvariet…
We give a concrete description of the category of etale algebras over the ring of Witt vectors of a given finite length with entries in an arbitrary ring. We do this not only for the classical p-typical and big Witt vector functors but also for variants of these functors which are in a certain sense their analogues over arbitrary local and global fields. The basic theory of these generalized Witt vectors is developed from the point of view of commuting Frobenius lifts and their universal properties, which is a new approach even for the classical Witt vectors. The larger purpose of this paper i…
Let G be a reductive algebraic group and H a closed subgroup of G. An affine embedding of the homogeneous space G/H is an affine G-variety with an open G-orbit isomorphic to G/H. We start with some basic properties of affine embeddings and consider the cases, where the theory is well-developed: toric varieties, normal SL(2)-embeddings, S-varieties, and algebraic monoids. We discuss connections between the theory of affine embeddings and Hilbert's 14th Problem via a theorem of Grosshans. We characterize affine homogeneous spaces G/H such that any affine embedding of G/H contains a finite number…
In this paper we study the geometric structure of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $GL_3$ and $b$ basic. We completely determine the irreducible components of the affine Deligne-Lusztig variety. In particular, we classify the cases where all of the irreducible components are classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties times finite-dimensional affine spaces. If this is the case, then the irreducible components are pairwise disjoint.
We describe a class of integrable systems on Poisson submanifolds of the affine Poisson-Lie groups $\widehat{PGL}(N)$, which can be enumerated by cyclically irreducible elements the co-extended affine Weyl groups $(\widehat{W}\times \widehat{W})^\sharp$. Their phase spaces admit cluster coordinates, whereas the integrals of motion are cluster functions. We show, that this class of integrable systems coincides with the constructed by Goncharov and Kenyon out of dimer models on a two-dimensional torus and classified by the Newton polygons. We construct the correspondence between the Weyl group e…
We study basic geometric properties of some group analogue of affine Springer fibers and compare with the classical Lie algebra affine Springer fibers. The main purpose is to formulate a conjecture that relates the number of irreducible components of such varieties for a reductive group $G$ to certain weight multiplicities defined by the Langlands dual group $\hat{G}$. We prove our conjecture in the case of unramified conjugacy class.
In this paper we study the geometric structure of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties for $GL_n$ and $b$ basic. We introduce a new condition on $λ$. If this is satisfied, then the corresponding affine Deligne-Lusztig variety is the disjoint union of classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties times finite-dimensional affine spaces.
I extend the ramified geometric Satake equivalence of Zhu from tamely ramified groups to include the case of general connected reductive groups. As a prerequisite I prove basic results on the geometry of affine flag varieties.
Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are closely related to the special fibre of Newton strata in the reduction of Shimura varieties or of moduli spaces of $G$-shtukas. In almost all cases, they are not quasi-compact. In this note we prove basic finiteness properties of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties under minimal assumptions on the associated group. We show that affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are locally of finite type, and prove a global finiteness result related to the natural group action. Similar results have previously been known for special situations.
We study a kind of modification of an affine domain which produces another affine domain. First appeared in passing in the basic paper of O. Zariski (1942), it was further considered by E.D. Davis (1967). The first named author applied its geometric counterpart to construct contractible smooth affine varieties non-isomorphic to Euclidean spaces. Here we provide certain conditions which guarantee preservation of the topology under a modification. As an application, we show that the group of biregular automorphisms of the affine hypersurface $X \subset C^{k+2}$ given by the equation $uv=p(x_1,..…
We study the $J_b(F)$-action on the set of top-dimensional irreducible components of affine Deligne--Lusztig varieties in the affine Grassmannian. We show that the stabilizer of any such component is a parahoric subgroup of $J_b(F)$ of maximal volume, verifying a conjecture of X.~Zhu. As an application, we give a description of the set of top-dimensional irreducible components in the basic locus of Shimura varieties.
Let G be a reductive group over the field F=k((t)), where k is an algebraic closure of a finite field, and let W be the (extended) affine Weyl group of G. The associated affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties $X_x(b)$, which are indexed by elements b in G(F) and x in W, were introduced by Rapoport. Basic questions about the varieties $X_x(b)$ which have remained largely open include when they are nonempty, and if nonempty, their dimension. We use techniques inspired by geometric group theory and representation theory to address these questions in the case that b is a pure translation, and so prove m…
Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties are analogues of Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the context of affine flag varieties and affine Grassmannians. They are closely related to moduli spaces of $p$-divisible groups in positive characteristic, and thus to arithmetic properties of Shimura varieties. We compare stratifications of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties attached to a basic element $b$. In particular, we show that the stratification defined by Chen and Viehmann using the relative position to elements of the group $J_b$, the $σ$-centralizer of $b$, coincides with the Bruhat-Tits stratification in…
Bounded local G-shtukas are function field analogs for p-divisible groups with extra structure. We describe their deformations and moduli spaces. The latter are analogous to Rapoport-Zink spaces for p-divisible groups. The underlying schemes of these moduli spaces are affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. For basic Newton polygons the closed Newton stratum in the universal deformation of a local G-shtuka is isomorphic to the completion of a corresponding affine Deligne-Lusztig variety in that point. This yields bounds on the dimension and proves equidimensionality of the basic affine Deligne-Luszt…
