Let G(K) be the group of K-rational points of a connected adjoint simple algebraic group defined over a non-archimedean local field K. In this paper we classify the unipotent representations of G(K) in terms of the geometry of the Langlands dual group. (This was known earlier in the special case where G(K) is an inner form of a split group.) We also determine which representations are tempered or square integrable.
This paper contains some conjectures about the unipotent almost characters of a simple p-adic group in terms of a matrix which generalizes the nonabelian Fourier transform matrix introduced by the author in 1979.
Let G be a simple adjoint group and let K=k((ε)) where k is an algebraic closure of a finite field F_q. In this paper we define some geometric objects on G(K) which are similar to the (cohomology sheaves of) the unipotent character sheaves on G(k). Using these geometric objects we define the unipotent almost characters of G(K_0) where K_0=F_q((ε)) and state some conjectures relating them to the characters of unipotent representations of G(K_0).
Let G be a semisimple almost simple algebraic group defined and split over a nonarchimedean local field K and let V be a unipotent representation of G(K) (for example, an Iwahori-spherical representation). We calculate the character of V at compact very regular elements of G(K) at compact very regular elements of G(K).
We define an involution on the space of elliptic unipotent Langlands parameters of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$ and verify that when $G$ is split adjoint exceptional, the composition of this involution with the hyperspecial parahoric restriction map agrees with Lusztig's nonabelian Fourier transform for unipotent representations of the finite reductive quotient. This is inspired by recent works of Lusztig on the almost unipotent characters of $p$-adic groups and of Moeglin and Waldspurger on the elliptic Fourier transform of odd orthogonal groups.
In this paper, we consider the relation between two nonabelian Fourier transforms. The first one is defined in terms of the Langlands-Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters for unipotent elliptic representations of a split p-adic group and the second is defined in terms of the pseudocoefficients of these representations and Lusztig's nonabelian Fourier transform for characters of finite groups of Lie type. We exemplify this relation in the case of the p-adic group of type G_2.
We determine the unitary dual of the geometric graded Hecke algebras with {unequal} parameters which appear in Lusztig's classification of unipotent representations for {exceptional} $p$-adic groups. The largest such algebra is of type $F_4.$ Via the Barbasch-Moy correspondence of unitarity applied to this setting, this is equivalent to the identification of the corresponding unitary unipotent representations with real central character of the $p$-adic groups. In order for this correspondence to be applicable here, we show (following Lusztig's geometric classification, and Barbasch and Moy's o…
In 1979 Lusztig proposed a conjectural construction of supercuspidal representations of reductive p-adic groups, which is similar to the well known construction of Deligne and Lusztig in the setting of finite reductive groups. We present a general method for explicitly calculating the representations arising from Lusztig's construction and illustrate it with several examples. The techniques we develop also provide background for the author's joint work with Weinstein on a purely local and explicit proof of the local Langlands correspondence.
Francois Rodier proved that it is possible to view smooth representations of certain totally disconnected abelian groups (the underlying additive group of a finite-dimensional p-adic vector space, for example) as sheaves on the Pontryagin dual group. For nonabelian totally disconnected groups, the appropriate dual space necessarily includes representations which are not one-dimensional, and does not carry a group structure. The general definition of the topology on the dual space is technically unwieldy, so we provide three different characterizations of this topology for a large class of tota…
The wavefront set is a fundamental invariant of an admissible representation arising from the Harish-Chandra-Howe local character expansion. In this paper, we give a precise formula for the wavefront set of an irreducible representation of real infinitesimal character in Lusztig's category of unipotent representations in terms of the Deligne-Langlands-Lusztig correspondence. Our formula generalizes the main result of arXiv:2112.14354, where this formula was obtained in the Iwahori-spherical case. We deduce that for any irreducible unipotent representation with real infinitesimal character, the…
Let $k$ be a $p$-adic field and let $\mathbf{G}(k)$ be the $k$-points of a connected reductive group, inner to split. The set of Aubert-Zelevinsky duals of the constituents of a tempered L-packet form an Arthur packet for $\mathbf{G}(k)$. In this paper, we give an alternative characterization of such Arthur packets in terms of the wavefront set, proving in some instances a conjecture of Jiang-Liu and Shahidi. Pursuing an analogy with real and complex groups, we define some special unions of Arthur packets which we call \emph{weak} Arthur packets and describe their constituents in terms of thei…
The wavefront set is a fundamental invariant arising from the Harish-Chandra-Howe local character expansion of an admissible representation. We prove a precise formula for the wavefront set of an irreducible Iwahori-spherical representation with `real infinitesimal character' and determine a lower bound for this invariant in terms of the Deligne-Langlands-Lusztig parameters. In particular, for the Iwahori-spherical representations with real infinitesimal character, we deduce that the algebraic wavefront set is a singleton, as conjectured by Moeglin and Waldspurger. As a corollary, we obtain an…
We introduce a notion of elliptic fake degrees for unipotent elliptic representations of a semisimple p-adic group. We conjecture, and verify in some cases, that the relation between the formal degrees of unipotent discrete series representations of a semisimple p-adic group and the elliptic fake degrees is given by the exotic Fourier transform matrix introduced by Lusztig in the study of representations of finite groups of Lie type.
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field and $\mathbf{U}$ be a unipotent group defined over $F$, and set $U=\mathbf{U}(F)$. Let $σ$ be an involution of $\mathbf{U}$ defined over $F$. Adapting the arguments of Yves Benoist in the real case, we prove the following result: an irreducible representation $π$ of $U$ is $U^σ$-distinguished if and only if it is $σ$-self-dual and in this case $\mathrm{Hom}_{U^σ}(π,\mathbb{C})$ has dimension one. When $σ$ is a Galois involution these results imply a bijective correspondence between the set $\mathrm{Irr}(U^σ)$ of isomorphism classes of irreducible representations of …
For the groups SO(2n+1,F), where F is a p-adic field, we consider the tempered irr{é}ducible representations of unipotent reduction. Lusztig has contructed and parametrized these representations. We prove that they satisfy the expected endoscopic identities which determine the parametrization.
Let $\mathrm G / F$ be a reductive split $p$-adic group and let $\mathrm U$ be the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup. We study the cohomology with trivial $\mathbb Z_p$-coefficients of the profinite nilpotent group $N = \mathrm U(\mathcal O_F)$ and its Lie algebra $\mathfrak n$, by extending a classical result of Kostant to our integral $p$-adic setup. The techniques used are a combination of results from group theory, algebraic groups and homological algebra.
We begin this paper by reviewing the Langlands correspondence for unipotent representations of the exceptional group of type $G_2$ over a $p$-adic field $F$ and present it in an explicit form. Then we compute all ABV-packets, as defined in [CFM+21] following ideas from Vogan's 1993 paper The local Langlands Conjecture, and prove that these packets satisfy properties derived from the expectation that they are generalized A-packets. We attach distributions to ABV-packets for $G_2$ and its endoscopic groups and study a geometric endoscopic transfer of these distributions. This paper builds on ear…
Let G be a group SO(2n+1) defined over a p-adic field. We compute the wave front set of the anti-tempered irreducible representations of G(F) which are of unipotent reduction. It is the orthogonal orbit dual to the symplectic orbit appearing in the Arthur's parametrization of the representation.
Using Lusztig's geometric classification, we find the reducibility points of a standard module for the affine Hecke algebra, in the case when the inducing data is generic. This recovers the known result of Muic-Shahidi for representations of split p-adic groups with Iwahori-spherical Whittaker vectors. We also give a necessary (insufficient) condition for reducibility in the non-generic case.
Let G be a special orthogonal group SO(2n+1) defined over a p-adic field F. Let $π$ be an admissible irreducible representation of G(F) which is tempered and of unipotent reduction. We prove that $π$ has a wave front set. In some particular cases, for instance if $π$ is of the discrete series, we give a method to compute this wave front set.
Let G be a reductive p-adic group which splits over an unramified extension of the ground field. Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda conjectured that the formal degree of a square-integrable G-representation $π$ can be expressed in terms of the adjoint $γ$-factor of the enhanced L-parameter of $π$. A similar conjecture was posed for the Plancherel densities of tempered irreducible G-representations. We prove these conjectures for unipotent G-representations. We also derive explicit formulas for the involved adjoint $γ$-factors.
We consider a group SO(2n+1) over a p-adic field, and tempered irreducible representations of this group, of unipotent reduction. We use the construction due to Lusztig of these representations. In an old paper with Moeglin, we have defined an involution in the complex vector space generated by those representations which are elliptic. It is strongly related to another involution defined by Lusztig for finite groups. We give a new definition of our involution and we prove it commutes, in some sense, with Jacquet functor.

We prove the following result in relative representation theory of a reductive p-adic group $G$: Let $U$ be the unipotent radical of a minimal parabolic subgroup of $G$, and let $ψ$ be an arbitrary smooth character of $U$. Let $S \subset Irr(G)$ be a Zariski dense collection of irreducible representations of $G$. Then the span of the Bessel distributions $B_π$ attached to representations $π$ from $S$ is dense in the space $\mathcal S^*(G)^{U\times U,ψ\times ψ}$ of all $(U\times U,ψ\times ψ)$-equivariant distributions on $G.$ We base our proof on the following results: 1. The category of smooth…
Let p and $\ell$ be two distinct primes, F a p-adic field and n an integer. We show that any level 0 block of the category of smooth Z $\ell$-valued representations of GL n (F) is equivalent to the unipotent block of an appropriate product of GL n i (F i). To this end, we first show that the level 0 category of GL n (F) is equivalent to a category of " modules " over a certain Z $\ell$-algebra " with many objects " whose definition only involves n and the residue field of F. Then we use fine properties of Deligne-Lusztig cohomology to split this algebra and produce suitable Morita equivalences…
Let G be a reductive connected group over the algebraic closure of a finite field. In this paper we give the classification of character sheaves on G in categorical terms (as a categorical centre). Previously such a classification was known for unipotent character sheaves and also in the case where the ground field is replaced by the complex numbers.
E. Opdam introduced the tool of spectral transfer morphism (STM) of affine Hecke algebras to study the formal degrees of unipotent discrete series representations. He established a uniqueness property of STM for the affine Hecke algebras associated of unipotent discrete series representations. Based on this result, Opdam gave an explanation for Lusztig's arithmetic/geometric correspondence (in Lusztig's classification of unipotent representations of $p$-adic adjoint simple groups) in terms of harmonic analysis, and partitioned the unipotent discrete series representations into $L$-packets base…
In a previous work, we have shown that a representation of a $p$-adic group obtained by (normalized) parabolic induction from an irreducible supercuspidal representation $σ$ of a Levi subgroup $M$ contains a subquotient which is square integrable, if and only if Harish-Chandra's $μ$-function has a pole in $σ$ of order equal to the parabolic rank of $M$. The aim of the present article is to interpret this result in terms of Langlands' functoriality principle.
Let G be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of bad characteristic. We classify the spherical unipotent conjugacy classes of G. We also show that if the characteristic of k is 2, then the fixed point subgroup of every involutorial automorphism (involution) of G is a spherical subgroup of G.
We study a coarse moduli space of irreducible representations of the group of unipotent matrices of order $\mathbb{4}$ over the ring of integers which have finite weight. All such representations are known to be monomial. To describe a coarse moduli space of such representations, we need to study pairs of subgroups and their characters, which induce non-isomorphic irreducible representations. We obtain a full classification of such pairs and, respectively, a coarse moduli space.
In this paper we start a classification of certain global integrals. First, we use the language of unipotent orbits to write down a family of global integrals. We then classify all those integrals which satisfy the dimension equation we set. After doing so, we check which of these integrals are global unipotent integrals. We do all this for groups of type $A_n$, and using all this we derive a certain interesting conjecture about the length of these integrals.
In this paper we will give a complete classification of the spectral transfer morphisms between the unipotent affine Hecke algebras of the various inner forms of a given quasi-split absolutely simple algebraic group, defined over a non-archimidean local field $\textbf{k}$ and split over an unramified extension of $\textbf{k}$. As an application of these results, the results of [O4] on the spectral correspondences associated with such morphisms and some results of Ciubotaru, Kato and Kato [CKK] we prove a conjecture of Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda [HII] on the formal degrees and adjoint gamma facto…
Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda have conjectured an explicit expression for the Plancherel density of the group of points of a reductive group defined over a local field $F$, in terms of local Langlands parameters. In these lectures we shall present a proof of these conjectures for Lusztig's class of representations of unipotent reduction if $F$ is $p$-adic and $G$ is of adjoint type and splits over an unramified extension of $F$. This is based on the author's paper [Spectral transfer morphisms for unipotent affine Hecke algebras, Selecta Math. (N.S.) 22 (2016), no. 4, 2143--2207]. More generally for…
Our goal is to classify all generically transitive actions of commutative unipotent groups on flag varieties up to conjugation. We establish relationship between this problem and classification of multiplications with certain properties on Lie algebra representations. Then we classify multiplications with the desired properties and solve the initial classification problem.
We study the decomposition matrices for the unipotent $\ell$-blocks of finite special unitary groups SU$_n(q)$ for unitary primes $\ell$ larger than $n$. Up to very few unknown entries, we give a complete solution for $n=2,\ldots,10$. We also prove a general result for two-column partitions when $\ell$ divides $q+1$. This is achieved using projective modules coming from the $\ell$-adic cohomology of Deligne--Lusztig varieties.
We give a classification of irreducible admissible modulo $p$ representations of a split $p$-adic reductive group in terms of supersingular representations. This is a generalization of a theorem of Herzig.
Zelevinsky's classification theory of discrete series of $p$-adic general linear groups has been well known. Mœglin and Tadic gave the same kind of theory for $p$-adic classical groups, which is more complicated due to the occurrence of nontrivial structure of L-packets. Nonetheless, their work is independent of the endoscopic classification theory of Arthur (also Mok in the unitary case), which concerns the structure of L-packets in these cases. So our goal in this paper is to make more explicit the connection between these two very different types of theories. To do so, we reprove the result…
This paper begins the project of defining Arthur packets of all unipotent representations for the $p$-adic exceptional group $G_2$. Here we treat the most interesting case by defining and computing Arthur packets with component group $S_3$. We also show that the distributions attached to these packets are stable, subject to a hypothesis. This is done using a self-contained microlocal analysis of simple equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of homogeneous cubics in two variables. In forthcoming work we will treat the remaining unipotent representations and their endoscopic classifica…
Let $F$ be a $p$-adic field, and $K$ a quadratic extension of $F$. Using Tadic's classification of the unitary dual of $GL(n,K)$, we give the list of irreducible unitary representations of this group distinguished by $GL(n,F)$, in terms of distinguished discrete series. As it is known that a generalised Steinberg representation $St(k,ρ)$ is distinguished if and only if the cuspidal representation $ρ$ is $η^{k-1}$-distinguished, for $η$ the character of $F^*$ with kernel the norms of $K^*$, this actually gives a classification of distinguished unitary representations in terms of distinguished c…
Fourier coefficients of automorphic representations $π$ of $\Sp_{2n}(\BA)$ are attached to unipotent adjoint orbits in $\Sp_{2n}(F)$, where $F$ is a number field and $\BA$ is the ring of adeles of $F$. We prove that for a given $π$, all maximal unipotent orbits, which gives nonzero Fourier coefficients of $π$ are special, and prove, under a well acceptable assumption, that if $π$ is cuspidal, then the stabilizer attached to each of those maximal unipotent orbits is $F$-anisotropic as algebraic group over $F$. These results strengthen, refine and extend the earlier work of Ginzburg, Rallis and …
