The space of smooth genus 0 curves in projective space has a natural smooth compactification: the moduli space of stable maps, which may be seen as the generalization of the classical space of complete conics. In arbitrary genus, no such natural smooth model is expected, as the space satisfies ``Murphy's Law''. In genus 1, however, the situation remains beautiful. We give a natural smooth compactification of the space of elliptic curves in projective space, and describe some of its properties. This space is a blow up of the space of stable maps. It can be interpreted as blowing up the most singular locus first, then the next most singular, and so on, but with a twist -- these loci are often entire components of the moduli space. We give a number of applications in enumerative geometry and Gromov-Witten theory. The proof that this construction indeed gives a desingularization will appear in math.AG/0603353v2 (currently under revision).
In this paper we classify all the compactifications of affine homology $3$-cells into the blow-ups of the projective $3$-space along smooth curves such that the log canonical divisors are linearly trivial. As a result, we prove that each embedded affine $3$-fold is isomorphic to the affine $3$-space except one example.
We describe two geometrically meaningful compactifications of the moduli space of elliptic K3 surfaces via stable slc pairs, for two different choices of a polarizing divisor, and show that their normalizations are two different toroidal compactifications of the moduli space, one for the ramification divisor and another for the rational curve divisor. In the course of the proof, we further develop the theory of integral affine spheres with 24 singularities. We also construct moduli of rational (generalized) elliptic stable slc surfaces of types ${\bf A_n}$ ($n\ge1$), ${\bf C_n}$ ($n\ge0$) and …
Projective duality identifies the moduli spaces $\mathbf{B}_n$ and $\mathbf{X}(3,n)$ parametrizing linearly general configurations of $n$ points in $\mathbb{P}^2$ and $n$ lines in the dual $\mathbb{P}^2$, respectively. The space $\mathbf{X}(3,n)$ admits Kapranov's Chow quotient compactification $\overline{\mathbf{X}}(3,n)$, studied also by Lafforgue, Hacking, Keel, Tevelev, and Alexeev, which gives an example of a KSBA moduli space of stable surfaces: it carries a family of certain reducible degenerations of $\mathbb{P}^2$ with $n$ "broken lines". Gerritzen and Piwek proposed a dual perspectiv…
A degree one del Pezzo surface is the blowup of P^2 at 8 general points. By the classical Cayley-Bacharach Theorem, there is a unique 9th point whose blowup produces a rational elliptic surface with a section. Via this relationship, we construct a stable pair compactification of the moduli space of anti-canonically polarized degree one del Pezzo surfaces.
It is known that some GIT compactifications associated to moduli spaces of either points in the projective line or cubic surfaces are isomorphic to Baily-Borel compactifications of appropriate ball quotients. In this paper, we show that their respective toroidal compactifications are isomorphic to moduli spaces of stable pairs as defined in the context of the MMP. Moreover, we give a precise mixed-Hodge-theoretic interpretation of this isomorphism for the case of eight labeled points in the projective line.
We generalize a compactification technique due to C. Simpson in the context of $\mathbb{G}_m$-actions over the ground field of complex numbers, to the case of a universally Japanese base ring. We complement this generalized compactification technique so that it can sometimes yield projectivity results for these compactifications. We apply these projectivity results to the Hodge, de Rham, and Dolbeault moduli spaces for curves, with special regards to ground fields of positive characteristic.
We construct various modular compactifications of the space of elliptic K3 surfaces using tools from the minimal model program, and explicitly describe the surfaces parametrized by their boundaries. The coarse spaces of our constructed compactifications admit morphisms to the Satake-Baily-Borel compactification. Finally, we show that one of our spaces is smooth with coarse space the GIT quotient of pairs of Weierstrass K3 surfaces with a chosen fiber.
In this paper we study the relationship between three compactifications of the moduli space of Hermitian-Yang-Mills connections on a fixed Hermitian vector bundle over a projective algebraic manifold of arbitrary dimension. Via the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem, this space is analytically isomorphic to the moduli space of stable holomorphic vector bundles, and as such it admits an algebraic compactification by Gieseker-Maruyama semistable torsion-free sheaves. A recent construction due to the first and third authors gives another compactification as a moduli space of slope semistable sheaves…
Let $(X,H)$ be a smooth, projective, polarized surface over $\mathbb{C}$, and let $v \in K_{\mathrm{num}}(X)$ be a class of positive rank. We prove that for certain Bridgeland stability conditions $σ= (\mathcal{A}, Z)$ "on the vertical wall" for $v$, the good moduli space $M^σ(v)$ parameterizing S-equivalence classes of $σ$-semistable objects of class $v$ in $\mathcal{A}$ is projective. Moreover, we construct a bijective morphism $M^{\mathrm{Uhl}}(v) \to M^σ(v)$ from the Uhlenbeck compactification of $μ$-stable vector bundles.
We consider the procedure that constructs log Calabi-Yau compactifications of weak Landau-Ginzburg models of Fano varieties. We apply it for del Pezzo surfaces and coverings of projective spaces of index one. For the coverings of degree greater then 2 the log Calabi-Yau compactification is singular; moreover, no smooth projective log Calabi-Yau compactification exists. We also prove in the cases under consideration the conjecture saying that the number of components of the fiber over infinity %and of finite fibers is equal to the dimension of an anticanonical system of the Fano variety.
When considered as a Deligne-Lusztig variety, the Drinfeld half space $Ω_V$ over a finite field $k$ has a compactification whose boundary divisor is normal crossing and which can be obtained by successively blowing-up projective space along linear subspaces. Pink and Schieder (2014) have introduced a new compactification of $Ω_V$ whose strata of the boundary are glued together in a way dual to the way they are for the tautological compactification by projective space. We show that by applying an analogous sequence of blow-ups to this new compactification we arrive at the compactification by De…
The stable reduction theorem of Deligne and Mumford --- The moduli space of smooth projective curves of genus $g$ is a quasi-projective algebraic variety, but is not projective. To understand its geometry, it may be crucial to consider compactifications of this space. By allowing to parameterize as well curves with controlled singularities (the so called stable curves), Deligne and Mumford constructed a projective compactification. The properness of this compactification translates into the stable reduction theorem that they prove, its projectivity is a later theorem of Knudsen and Mumford. Th…
We show that the Fulton-MacPherson compactification of the configuration space of $n$ distinct labeled points in certain varieties of arbitrary dimension $d$, including projective space, is not a Mori dream space for $n$ larger than $d+8$.
We classify the Deligne-Mumford stacks M compactifying the moduli space of smooth $n$-pointed curves of genus one under the condition that the points of M represent Gorenstein curves with distinct markings. This classification uncovers new moduli spaces $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}(Q)$, which we may think of coming from an enrichment of the notion of level used to define Smyth's $m$-stable spaces. Finally, we construct a cube complex of Artin stacks interpolating between the $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}(Q)$'s, a multidimensional analogue of the wall-and-chamber structure seen in the log minimal model …
We find classes of projective manifolds that are elliptic in the sense of Gromov and such that the affine cones over these manifolds also are elliptic off their vertices. For example, the latter holds for any generalized flag manifold of dimension at least 3 successively blown up in a finite set of points and infinitesimally near points. This also holds for any smooth projective rational surface. For the affine cones, the Gromov ellipticity is a much weaker property than the flexibility. Nonetheless, it still implies the infinite transitivity of the action of the endomorphism monoid on these c…
We exhibit a smooth compactification of the moduli space of elliptic curves in a product of projective spaces with tangency along a subset of its toric boundary divisors. This is a Vakil--Zinger type of desingularization for maps to a product of projective spaces using ideas of elliptic singularities and logarithmic geometry, extending the recent work by Ranganathan--Santos-Parker--Wise. We use this to construct the virtual fundamental classes of the spaces of genus 1 maps to a special class of simple normal crossings pairs.
We define a class of surfaces corresponding to the ADE root lattices and construct compactifications of their moduli spaces as quotients of projective varieties for Coxeter fans, generalizing Losev-Manin spaces of curves. We exhibit modular families over these moduli spaces, which extend to families of stable pairs over the compactifications. One simple application is a geometric compactification of the moduli of rational elliptic surfaces that is a finite quotient of a projective toric variety.
In this paper we deal with compactifications of affine homology $3$-cells into quadric fibrations such that the boundary divisors contain fibers. We show that all such affine homology $3$-cells are isomorphic to the affine $3$-space $\mathbb{A}^{3}$. Moreover, we show that all such compactifications can be connected by explicit elementary links preserving $\mathbb{A}^{3}$ to the projective $3$-space $\mathbb{P}^{3}$.
We construct a relative compactification of Dolbeault moduli spaces of Higgs bundles for reductive algebraic groups on families of projective manifolds that is compatible with the Hitchin morphism.
