We show how the essential spectral radius of a bounded positive kernel, acting on bounded functions, is linked to its lower approximation by certain absolutely continuous kernels. The standart Doeblin's condition can be interpreted in this context, and, when suitably reformulated, it leads to a formula for the essential spectral radius. This results may be used to characterize the Markov kernels having a quasi-compact action on a space of measurable functions bounded with respect to some test function, when no irreducibilty and aperiodicity are assumed.
We consider a family of Markov chains whose transition dynamics are affected by model parameters. Understanding the parametric dependence of (complex) performance measures of such Markov chains is often of significant interest. The derivatives of the performance measures w.r.t. the parameters play important roles, for example, in numerical optimization of the performance measures, and quantification of the uncertainties in the performance measures when there are uncertainties in the parameters from the statistical estimation procedures. In this paper, we establish conditions that guarantee the…
In this paper, we investigate spectral properties of explosive symmetric Markov processes. Under a condition on its life time, we prove the $L^1$-semigroup of Markov processes become compact operators.
We give sufficient conditions on the underlying filtration such that all totally inaccessible stopping times have compensators which are absolutely continuous. If a semimartingale, strong Markov process X has a representation as a solution of a stochastic differential equation driven by a Wiener process, Lebesgue measure, and a Poisson random measure, then all compensators of totally inaccessible stopping times are absolutely continuous with respect to the minimal filtration generated by X. However Cinlar and Jacod have shown that all semimartingale strong Markov processes, up to a change of t…
Let $P$ be a Markov kernel on a measurable space $\X$ and let $V:\X\r[1,+\infty)$. We provide various assumptions, based on drift conditions, under which $P$ is quasi-compact on the weighted-supremum Banach space $(\cB_V,\|\cdot\|_V)$ of all the measurable functions $f : \X\r\C$ such that $\|f\|_V := \sup_{x\in \X} |f(x)|/V(x) < \infty$. Furthermore we give bounds for the essential spectral radius of $P$. Under additional assumptions, these results allow us to derive the convergence rate of $P$ on $\cB_V$, that is the geometric rate of convergence of the iterates $P^n$ to the stationary distri…
We discuss the pricing of defaultable assets in an incomplete information model where the default time is given by a first hitting time of an unobservable process. We show that in a fairly general Markov setting, the indicator function of the default has an absolutely continuous compensator. Given this compensator we then discuss the optional projection of a class of semimartingales onto the filtration generated by the observation process and the default indicator process. Available formulas for the pricing of defaultable assets are analyzed in this setting and some alternative formulas are su…
Conditions are established under which the optimal control of processes having both absolutely continuous and singular (with respect to time) controls are equivalent to linear programs over a space of measures on the state and control spaces. This paper considers long-term average and discounted criteria and includes budget and resource constraints. The linear programs optimize over measures representing the expected occupation measure of the state and absolutely continuous control processes and a similar expected occupation measure of the state and control when the singular action of the proc…
Here we propose the Donsker-Varadhan-type compactness conditions and prove the joint large deviation principle for the empirical measure and empirical flow of Markov renewal processes (semi-Markov processes) with a countable state space, generalizing the relevant results for continuous-time Markov chains with a countable state space obtained in [Ann. Inst. H. Poincaré Probab. Statist. 51, 867-900 (2015)] and [Stoch. Proc. Appl. 125, 2786-2819 (2015)], as well as the relevant results for Markov renewal processes with a finite state space obtained in [Adv. Appl. Probab. 48, 648-671 (2016)]. In p…
We consider general Markov chains with discrete time in an arbitrary measurable (phase) space and homogeneous in time. Markov chains are defined by the classical transition function which within the framework of the operator treatment generates a conjugate pair of linear Markov operators in the Banach space of measurable bounded functions and in the Banach space of bounded finite additive measures. It is proved that the well-known Doeblin condition $ (D) $ of ergodicity (quasi\-compactness) of the Markov chain is equivalent to the condition $ (*) $: all finitely additive invariant measures of …
Let $(\E,\F)$ be a symmetric non-local Dirichlet from with unbounded coefficient on $L^2(\R^d;\d x)$ defined by $$\E(f,g)=\iint_{\R^d\times \R^d} (f(y)-f(x))(g(x)-g(y)){W(x,y)}\, J(x,\d y)\,\d x, \quad f,g\in \F,$$ where $J(x,\d y)$ is regarded as the jumping kernel for a pure-jump symmetric Lévy-type process with bounded coefficients, and $W(x,y)$ is seen as a weighted (unbounded) function. We establish sharp criteria for compactness and non-compactness of the associated Markovian semigroup $(P_t)_{t\ge0}$ on $L^2(\R^d;\d x)$. In particular, we prove that if $J(x,\d y)=|x-y|^{-d-α}\,\d y$ wit…
When are quantum filters asymptotically independent of the initial state? We show that this is the case for absolutely continuous initial states when the quantum stochastic model satisfies an observability condition. When the initial system is finite dimensional, this condition can be verified explicitly in terms of a rank condition on the coefficients of the associated quantum stochastic differential equation.
We show that if the density of the absolutely continuous part of a copula is bounded away from zero on a set of Lebesgue measure 1, then that copula generates \textquotedblleft lower $ψ$-mixing\textquotedblright\ stationary Markov chains. This conclusion implies $ϕ$-mixing, $ρ$-mixing, $β$-mixing and \textquotedblleft interlaced $ρ$-mixing\textquotedblright . We also provide some new results on the mixing structure of Markov chains generated by mixtures of copulas.
Let $\{X_n\}_{n\in\N}$ be a Markov chain on a measurable space $\X$ with transition kernel $P$ and let $V:\X\r[1,+\infty)$. The Markov kernel $P$ is here considered as a linear bounded operator on the weighted-supremum space $\cB_V$ associated with $V$. Then the combination of quasi-compactness arguments with precise analysis of eigen-elements of $P$ allows us to estimate the geometric rate of convergence $ρ_V(P)$ of $\{X_n\}_{n\in\N}$ to its invariant probability measure in operator norm on $\cB_V$. A general procedure to compute $ρ_V(P)$ for discrete Markov random walks with identically dist…
Let (X k) be a strictly stationary sequence of random variables with values in some Polish space E and common marginal $μ$, and (A k) k>0 be a sequence of Borel sets in E. In this paper, we give some conditions on (X k) and (A k) under which the events {X k $\in$ A k } satisfy the Borel-Cantelli (or strong Borel-Cantelli) property. In particular we prove that, if $μ$(lim sup n A n) > 0, the Borel-Cantelli property holds for any absolutely regular sequence. In case where the A k 's are nested, we show, on some examples, that a rate of convergence of the mixing coefficients is needed. Finally we…
Let $X$ be a Markov process taking values in $\mathbf{E}$ with continuous paths and transition function $(P_{s,t})$. Given a measure $μ$ on $(\mathbf{E}, \mathscr{E})$, a Markov bridge starting at $(s,\varepsilon_x)$ and ending at $(T^*,μ)$ for $T^* <\infty$ has the law of the original process starting at $x$ at time $s$ and conditioned to have law $μ$ at time $T^*$. We will consider two types of conditioning: a) {\em weak conditioning} when $μ$ is absolutely continuous with respect to $P_{s,t}(x,\cdot)$ and b) {\em strong conditioning} when $μ=\varepsilon_z$ for some $z \in \mathbf{E}$. The m…
The problem of existence and uniqueness of absolutely continuous invariant measures for a class of piecewise deterministic Markov processes is investigated using the theory of substochastic semigroups obtained through the Kato--Voigt perturbation theorem on the $L^1$-space. We provide a new criterion for the existence of a strictly positive and unique invariant density for such processes. The long time qualitative behavior of the corresponding semigroups is also considered. To illustrate our general results we give a detailed study of a two dimensional model of gene expression with bursting.
In this paper, we start by showing that the intertwining relationship between two minimal Markov semigroups acting on Hilbert spaces implies that any recurrent extensions, in the sense of Itô, of these semigroups satisfy the same intertwining identity. Under mild additional assumptions on the intertwining operator, we prove that the converse also holds. This connection, which relies on the representation of excursion quantities as developed by Fitzsimmons and Getoor, enables us to give an interesting probabilistic interpretation of intertwining relationships between Markov semigroups via excur…
In this paper, we derive the explicit expressions of two Markov semi-groups constructed by P. Biane in \cite{Bia1} from the restriction of a particular positive definite function on the complex unimodular group $Sl(2,\mathbb{C})$ to two commutative subalgebras of its universal $C^{\star}$-algebra. Our computations use Euclidean Fourier analysis together with the generating function of Laguerre polynomials with index $-1$, and yield absolutely-convergent double series representations of the semi-group densities. In the last part of the paper, we discuss the coincidence, noticed by Biane as well…
A Markov operator $P$ on a probability space $(S,Σ,μ)$, with $μ$ invariant, is called {\it hyperbounded} if for some $1 \le p<q \le \infty$ it maps (continuously) $L^p$ into $L^q$. We deduce from a recent result of Glück that a hyperbounded $P$ is quasi-compact, hence uniformly ergodic, in all $L^r(S,μ)$, $1<r< \infty$. We prove, using a method similar to Foguel's, that a hyperbounded Markov operator has periodic behavior similar to that of Harris recurrent operators, and for the ergodic case obtain conditions for aperiodicity. Given a probability $ν$ on the unit circle, we prove that if the c…
Let X be a spectrally negative self-similar Markov process with 0 as an absorbing state. In this paper, we show that the distribution of the absorption time is absolutely continuous with an infinitely continuously differentiable density. We provide a power series and a contour integral representation of this density. Then, by means of probabilistic arguments, we deduce some interesting analytical properties satisfied by these functions, which include, for instance, several types of hypergeometric functions. We also give several characterizations of the Kesten's constant appearing in the study …
We consider a large class of piecewise expanding maps T of [0,1] with a neutral fixed point, and their associated Markov chain Y_i whose transition kernel is the Perron-Frobenius operator of T with respect to the absolutely continuous invariant probability measure. We give a large class of unbounded functions f for which the partial sums of f\circ T^i satisfy both a central limit theorem and a bounded law of the iterated logarithm. For the same class, we prove that the partial sums of f(Y_i) satisfy a strong invariance principle. When the class is larger, so that the partial sums of f\circ T^i…
We analyse the $\ell^2(π)$-convergence rate of irreducible and aperiodic Markov chains with $N$-band transition probability matrix $P$ and with invariant distribution $π$. This analysis is heavily based on: first the study of the essential spectral radius $r\_{ess}(P\_{|\ell^2(π)})$ of $P\_{|\ell^2(π)}$ derived from Hennion's quasi-compactness criteria; second the connection between the Spectral Gap property (SG$\_2$) of $P$ on $\ell^2(π)$ and the $V$-geometric ergodicity of $P$. Specifically, (SG$\_2$) is shown to hold under the condition $ α\_0 := \sum\_{{m}=-N}^N \limsup\_{i\rightarrow +\in…
We analyze some properties of maximizing stationary Markov probabilities on the Bernoulli space $[0,1]^\mathbb{N}$, More precisely, we consider ergodic optimization for a continuous potential $A$, where $A: [0,1]^\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}$ which depends only on the two first coordinates. We are interested in finding stationary Markov probabilities $μ_\infty$ on $ [0,1]^\mathbb{N}$ that maximize the value $ \int A d μ,$ among all stationary Markov probabilities $μ$ on $[0,1]^\mathbb{N}$. This problem correspond in Statistical Mechanics to the zero temperature case for the interaction described b…

It is well known that stationary geometrically ergodic Markov chains are $β$-mixing (absolutely regular) with geometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Furthermore, for initial distributions other than the stationary one, geometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing under suitable moment assumptions. In this note we show that similar results hold also for subgeometrically ergodic Markov chains. In particular, for both stationary and other initial distributions, subgeometric ergodicity implies $β$-mixing with subgeometrically decaying mixing coefficients. Although this result is simple it should p…
The goal of this paper is to develop a general method to establish conditional ergodicity of infinite-dimensional Markov chains. Given a Markov chain in a product space, we aim to understand the ergodic properties of its conditional distributions given one of the components. Such questions play a fundamental role in the ergodic theory of nonlinear filters. In the setting of Harris chains, conditional ergodicity has been established under general nondegeneracy assumptions. Unfortunately, Markov chains in infinite-dimensional state spaces are rarely amenable to the classical theory of Harris cha…
