The problem of existence and uniqueness of absolutely continuous invariant measures for a class of piecewise deterministic Markov processes is investigated using the theory of substochastic semigroups obtained through the Kato--Voigt perturbation theorem on the $L^1$-space. We provide a new criterion for the existence of a strictly positive and unique invariant density for such processes. The long time qualitative behavior of the corresponding semigroups is also considered. To illustrate our general results we give a detailed study of a two dimensional model of gene expression with bursting.
We give upper and lower estimates of densities of convolution semigroups of probability measures under explicit assumptions on the corresponding Levy measure and the Levy--Khinchin exponent. We obtain also estimates of derivatives of densities.
We obtain general lower estimates of transition densities of jump Lévy processes. We use them for processes with Lévy measures having bounded support, processes with exponentially decaying Lévy measures for large times and for processes with high intensity of small jumps for small times.
The law of the iterated logarithm for a piecewise deterministic Markov process assured by the properties of the Markov chain given by its post-jump locations
We study existence of densities for solutions to stochastic differential equations with Hölder continuous coefficients and driven by a $d$-dimensional Lévy process $Z=(Z_{t})_{t\geq 0}$, where, for $t>0$, the density function $f_{t}$ of $Z_{t}$ exists and satisfies, for some $(α_{i})_{i=1,\dots,d}\subset(0,2)$ and $C>0$, \begin{align*} \limsup\limits _{t \to 0}t^{1/α_{i}}\int\limits _{\mathbb{R}^{d}}|f_{t}(z+e_{i}h)-f_{t}(z)|dz\leq C|h|,\ \ h\in \mathbb{R},\ \ i=1,\dots,d. \end{align*} Here $e_{1},\dots,e_{d}$ denote the canonical basis vectors in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$. The latter condition covers …
We consider a solution to a generic Markovian jump diffusion and show that for positive times the law of the solution process has a smooth density with respect to Lebesgue measure under a uniform version of Hoermander's conditions. Unlike previous results in the area the result covers a class of infinite activity jump processes. The result is accompolished by using carefully crafted refinements to the classical arguments used in proving smoothness of density via Malliavin calculus. In particular, a key ingredient is provided by our proof that the semimartinagle inequality of Norris persists fo…
In this paper we study the transition densities for a large class of non-symmetric Markov processes whose jumping kernels decay exponentially or subexponentially. We obtain their upper bounds which also decay at the same rate as their jumping kernels. When the lower bounds of jumping kernels satisfy the weak upper scaling condition at zero, we also establish lower bounds for the transition densities, which are sharp.
We consider an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with values in R^n driven by a Lévy process (Z_t) taking values in R^d with d possibly smaller than n. The Lévy noise can have a degenerate or even vanishing Gaussian component. Under a controllability condition and an assumption on the Lévy measure of (Z_t), we prove that the law of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process at any time t>0 has a density on R^n. Moreover, when the Lévy process is of $α$-stable type, $α\in (0,2)$, we show that such density is a $C^{\infty}$-function.
We study the limiting occupation density process for a large number of critical and driftless branching random walks. We show that the rescaled occupation densities of $\lfloor sN\rfloor$ branching random walks, viewed as a function-valued, increasing process $\{g_{s}^{N}\}_{s\ge 0}$, converges weakly to a pure jump process in the Skorohod space $\mathbb D([0, +\infty), \mathcal C_{0}(\mathbb R))$, as $N\to\infty$. Moreover, the jumps of the limiting process consist of i.i.d. copies of an Integrated super-Brownian Excursion (ISE) density, rescaled and weighted by the jump sizes in a real-value…
In this paper we study the transition density and exponential ergodicity in total variation for an affine process on the canonical state space $\mathbb{R}_{\geq0}^{m}\times\mathbb{R}^{n}$. Under a Hörmander-type condition for diffusion components as well as a boundary non-attainment assumption, we derive the existence and regularity of the transition density for the affine process and then prove the strong Feller property. Moreover, we also show that under these and the additional subcritical conditions the corresponding affine process on the canonical state space is exponentially ergodic in t…
Upper estimates of densities of convolution semigroups of probability measures are given under explicit assumptions on the corresponding Lévy measure and the Lévy--Khinchin exponent.
In this paper, we study the transition densities of pure-jump symmetric Markov processes in $ {\mathbb R}^d$, whose jumping kernels are comparable to radially symmetric functions with mixed polynomial growths. Under some mild assumptions on their scale functions, we establish sharp two-sided estimates of transition densities (heat kernel estimates) for such processes. This is the first study on global heat kernel estimates of jump processes (including non-Lévy processes) whose weak scaling index is not necessarily strictly less than 2. As an application, we proved that the finite second moment…
We consider a stochastic volatility model with Lévy jumps for a log-return process $Z=(Z_{t})_{t\geq 0}$ of the form $Z=U+X$, where $U=(U_{t})_{t\geq 0}$ is a classical stochastic volatility process and $X=(X_{t})_{t\geq 0}$ is an independent Lévy process with absolutely continuous Lévy measure $ν$. Small-time expansions, of arbitrary polynomial order, in time-$t$, are obtained for the tails $\bbp(Z_{t}\geq z)$, $z>0$, and for the call-option prices $\bbe(e^{z+Z_{t}}-1)_{+}$, $z\neq 0$, assuming smoothness conditions on the {\PaleGrey density of $ν$} away from the origin and a small-time large…
We derive upper estimates of transition densities for Feller semigroups with jump intensities lighter than that of the rotation invariant stable Levy process
In this paper, we study transition density functions for pure jump unimodal Lévy processes killed upon leaving an open set $D$. Under some mild assumptions on the Lévy density, we establish two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates when the open set $D$ is $C^{1, 1}$. Our result covers the case that the Lévy densities of unimodal Lévy processes are regularly varying functions whose indices are equal to the Euclidean dimension. This is the first results on two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for Lévy processes such that the weak lower scaling index of the Lévy densities is not necessarily…
We study small time bounds for transition densities of convolution semigroups corresponding to pure jump Lévy processes in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, $d \geq 1$, including those with jumping kernels exponentially and subexponentially localized at infinity. For a large class of Lévy measures, non-necessarily symmetric nor absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure, we find the optimal, both in time and space, upper bound for the corresponding transition kernels at infinity. In case of Lévy measures that are symmetric and absolutely continuous, with densities $g$ such that $g(x) \asymp f(…
We study the order statistics of a random walk (RW) of $n$ steps whose jumps are distributed according to symmetric Erlang densities $f_p(η)\sim |η|^p \,e^{-|η|}$, parametrized by a non-negative integer $p$. Our main focus is on the statistics of the gaps $d_{k,n}$ between two successive maxima $d_{k,n}=M_{k,n}-M_{k+1,n}$ where $M_{k,n}$ is the $k$-th maximum of the RW between step 1 and step $n$. In the limit of large $n$, we show that the probability density function of the gaps $P_{k,n}(Δ) = \Pr(d_{k,n} = Δ)$ reaches a stationary density $P_{k,n}(Δ) \to p_k(Δ)$. For large $k$, we demonstrat…
We propose a new generalisation of jump-telegraph process with variable velocities and jumps. Amplitude of the jumps and velocity values are random, and they depend on the time spent by the process in the previous state of the underlying Markov process. This construction is applied to markets modelling. The distribution densities and the moments satisfy some integral equations of the Volterra type. We use them for characterisation of the equivalent risk-neutral measure and for the expression of historical volatility in various settings. The fundamental equation is derived by similar arguments.…
We investigate densities of vaguely continuous convolution semigroups of probability measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$. First, we provide results that give upper estimates in a situation when the corresponding jump measure is allowed to be highly non-symmetric. Further, we prove upper estimates of the density and its derivatives if the jump measure compares with an isotropic unimodal measure and the characteristic exponent satisfies certain scaling condition. Lower estimates are discussed in view of a recent development in that direction, and in such a way to complement upper estimates. We apply all …
In this paper, we study sharp Dirichlet heat kernel estimates for a large class of symmetric Markov processes in $C^{1,η}$ open sets. The processes are symmetric pure jump Markov processes with jumping intensity $κ(x,y) ψ_1 (|x-y|)^{-1} |x-y|^{-d-α}$, where $α\in (0,2)$. Here, $ψ_1$ is an increasing function on $[ 0, \infty )$, with $ψ_1(r)=1$ on $0<r \le 1$ and $c_1e^{c_2r^β} \le ψ_1(r) \le c_3 e^{c_4r^β}$ on $r>1$ for $β\in [0,\infty]$, and $ κ( x, y)$ is a symmetric function confined between two positive constants, with $|κ(x,y)-κ(x,x)|\leq c_5|x-y|^ρ$ for $|x-y|<1$ and $ρ>α/2$. We establis…
We prove gradient estimates for harmonic functions with respect to a $d$-dimensional unimodal pure-jump Levy process under some mild assumptions on the density of its Levy measure. These assumptions allow for a construction of an unimodal Levy process in $\R^{d+2}$ with the same characteristic exponent as the original process. The relationship between the two processes provides a fruitful source of gradient estimates of transition densities. We also construct another process called a difference process which is very useful in the analysis of differential properties of harmonic functions.
We study Markovian continuous-time random walk models for Lévy flights and we show an example in which the convergence to stable densities is not guaranteed when jumps follow a bi-modal power-law distribution that is equal to zero in zero. The significance of this result is two-fold: i) with regard to the probabilistic derivation of the fractional diffusion equation and also ii) with regard to the concept of site fidelity in the framework of Lévy-like motion for wild animals.
We study the existence of densities for distributions of piecewise deterministic Markov processes. We also obtain relationships between invariant densities of the continuous time process and that of the process observed at jump times. In our approach we use functional-analytic methods and the theory of linear operator semigroups. By imposing general conditions on the characteristics of a given Markov process, we show the existence of a substochastic semigroup describing the evolution of densities for the process and we identify its generator. Our main tool is a new perturbation theorem for sub…
We study asymmetric zero-range processes on Z with nearest-neighbour jumps and site disorder. The jump rate of particles is an arbitrary but bounded nondecreasing function of the number of particles. We prove quenched strong local equilibrium at subcritical and critical hydrodynamic densities, and dynamic local loss of mass at supercritical hydrodynamic densities. Our results do not assume starting from local Gibbs states. As byproducts of these results, we prove convergence of the process from given initial configurations with an asymptotic density of particles to the left of the origin. In p…
For a finite state Markov process and a finite collection $\{ Γ_k, k \in K \}$ of subsets of its state space, let $τ_k$ be the first time the process visits the set $Γ_k$. We derive explicit/recursive formulas for the joint density and tail probabilities of the stopping times $\{ τ_k, k \in K\}$. The formulas are natural generalizations of those associated with the jump times of a simple Poisson process. We give a numerical example and indicate the relevance of our results to credit risk modeling.
Relying on the method developed in [debusscheromito2014], we prove the existence of a density for two different examples of random fields indexed by $(t,x)\in(0,T]\times \Rd$. The first example consists of SPDEs with Lipschitz continuous coefficients driven by a Gaussian noise white in time and with a stationary spatial covariance, in the setting of [dalang1999]. The density exists on the set where the nonlinearity $σ$ of the noise does not vanish. This complements the results in [sanzsuess2015] where $σ$ is assumed to be bounded away from zero. The second example is an ambit field with a stoc…
We examine the question of existence and uniqueness of evolution systems of measures for non-autonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck-type processes with jumps. In particular, we give examples where we explicitly compute the densities of such families of measures.
Subordinating a random walk to a renewal process yields a continuous time random walk (CTRW) model for diffusion, including the possibility of anomalous diffusion. Transition densities of scaling limits of power law CTRWs have been shown to solve fractional Fokker-Planck equations. We consider limits of sequences of CTRWs which arise when both waiting times and jumps are taken from an infinitesimal triangular array. We identify two different limit processes $X_t$ and $Y_t$ when waiting times precede or follow jumps, respectively. In the limiting procedure, we keep track of the renewal times of…
We construct admissible circulant Laplacian matrix functions as generators for strictly increasing random walks on the integer line. These Laplacian matrix functions refer to a certain class of Bernstein functions. The approach has connections with biased walks on digraphs. Within this framework, we introduce a space-time generalization of the Poisson process as a strictly increasing walk with discrete Mittag-Leffler jumps subordinated to a (continuous-time) fractional Poisson process. We call this process `{\it space-time Mittag-Leffler process}'. We derive explicit formulae for the state pro…
We investigate densities of vaguely continuous convolution semigroups of probability measures on $\mathbb{R}^d$. We expose that many typical conditions on the characteristic exponent repeatedly used in the literature of the subject are equivalent to the behaviour of the maximum of the density as a function of time variable. We also prove qualitative lower estimates under mild assumptions on the corresponding jump measure and the characteristic exponent.
We put forward a complete theory on moment explosion for fairly general state-spaces. This includes a characterization of the validity of the affine transform formula in terms of minimal solutions of a system of generalized Riccati differential equations. Also, we characterize the class of positive semidefinite processes, and provide existence of weak and strong solutions for Wishart SDEs. As an application, we answer a conjecture of M.L. Eaton on the maximal parameter domain of non-central Wishart distributions. The last chapter of this thesis comprises three individual works on affine models…
In our previous publications (IJTAF 2019, Math. Finance 2020), we introduced a general class of SINH-regular processes and demonstrated that efficient numerical methods for the evaluation of the Wiener-Hopf factors and various probability distributions (prices of options of several types) in Lévy models can be developed using only a few general properties of the characteristic exponent $ψ$. Essentially all popular Lévy processes enjoy these properties. In the present paper, we define classes of Stieltjes-Lévy processes (SL-processes) as processes with completely monotone Lévy densities of posi…
This paper summarizes results and some open problems about the large-scale and long-time behavior of asymmetric, disordered exclusion and zero-range processes. These processes have randomly chosen jump rates at the sites of the underlying lattice. The interesting feature is that for suitably distributed random rates there is a phase transition where the process behaves differently at high and low densities. Some of this distinction is visible on the hydrodynamic scale.
