We give explicit formulas for conformally invariant operators with leading term an $m$-th power of Laplacian on the product of spheres with the natural pseudo-Riemannian product metric for all $m$.
We study differential invariants of linear differential operators and use them to find conditions for equivalence of differential operators acting in line bundles over smooth manifolds with respect to groups of authomorphisms.
We study manifolds with almost nonnegative curvature operator (ANCO) and provide first examples of closed simply connected ANCO mannifolds that do not admit nonnegative curvature operator.
We study the positivity properties of the curvature operator for holomorphic Hermitian vector bundles. We obtain new characterization of semi-positive curvature operators for $(n,q)$ and $(p,n)$-forms by L2-estimates. The characterization of Nakano semi-positivity by $L^2$-estimate is already known. Applying our results, we give new characterizations of Nakano semi-negativity.
Let (M,g) be a Riemannian manifold and G a nondegenerate g-natural metric on its tangent bundle T M . In this paper we establish a relation between the Jacobi operators of (M,g) and that of (T M,G). In the case of a Riemannian surface (M,g), we compute explicitly the spectrum of some Jacobi operators of (TM,G) and give necessary and sufficient conditions for (T M,G) to be an Osserman manifold.
The non-associativity of translations in a quantum system with magnetic field background has received renewed interest in association with topologically trivial gerbes over $\mathbb{R}^n.$ The non-associativity is described by a 3-cocycle of the group $\mathbb{R}^n$ with values in the unit circle $S^1.$ The gerbes over a space $M$ are topologically classified by the Dixmier-Douady class which is an element of $\mathrm{H}^3(M,\mathbb{Z}).$ However, there is a finer description in terms of local differential forms of degrees $d=0,1,2,3$ and the case of the magnetic translations for $n=3$ the 2-f…
Kock [Bull. Austral. Math. Soc., 25 (1982), 357-386] has considered differential forms with values in a group in a context where neighborhood relations are available. By doing so, he has made it clear where the so-called Maurer-Cartan formula should come from. In this paper, while we retain the classical definition of differential form with values in the Lie algebra of a group, we propose another definition of coboundary operator for the de Rham complex in a highly general microlinear context, in which neighborhood relations are no longer in view. Using this new definition of the coboundary op…
The standard Laplace operator is a generalization of the Hodge Laplace operator on differential forms to arbitrary geometric vector bundles, alternatively it can be seen as generalization of the Casimir operator acting on sections of homogeneous vector bundles over symmetric spaces to general Riemannian manifolds. Stressing the functorial aspects of the standard Laplace operator $Δ$ with respect to the category of geometric vector bundles we show that the standard Laplace operator commutes not only with all homomorphisms, but also with a large class of natural first order differential operator…
It is well-known that if a curve is a geodesic line of the tangent (sphere) bundle with Sasaki metric of a locally symmetric Riemannian manifold then the projected curve has all its geodesic curvatures constant. In this paper we consider the case of tangent (sphere) bundle over the real, complex and quaternionic space form and give a unified proof of the following property: all geodesic curvatures of projected curve are zero starting from k_3,k_6 and k_{10} for the real, complex and quaternionic space formes respectively.
We compute eta invariants of various Dirac type operators on circle bundles over Riemann surfaces via two approaches: an adiabatic approach based on the results of Bismut-Cheeger-Dai and a direct elementary one. These results, coupled with some delicate spectral flow computations are then used to determine the virtual dimensions of Seiberg-Witten finite energy moduli spaces on any 4-manifold bounding unions of circle bundles. This belated paper should be regarded as the analytical backbone of dg-ga/9711006. There, we indicated only what changes are needed to extend the methods of the present p…
We prove that for a vector bundle $ E \to M$, the Lie algebra $\mathcal{D}_{\mathcal{E}}(E)$ generated by all differential operators on $E$ which are eigenvectors of $L_{\mathcal{E}},$ the Lie derivative in the direction of the Euler vector field of $E,$ and the Lie algebra $\mathcal{D}_G(E)$ obtained by Grothendieck construction over the $\mathbb{R}-$algebra $\mathcal{A}(E):= {\rm Pol}(E)$ of fiberwise polynomial functions, coincide up an isomorphism. This allows us to compute all the derivations of the $\mathbb{R}-$algebra $\mathcal{A}(E)$ and to obtain an explicit description of the Lie alg…
We introduce the notions of Chern-Dirac bundles and Chern-Dirac operators on Hermitian manifolds. They are analogues of classical Dirac bundles and Dirac operators, with Levi-Civita connection replaced by Chern connection. We then show that the tensor product of canonical and the anticanonical spinor bundles, called V-spinor bundle, is a bigraded Chern-Dirac bundle with spaces of harmonic spinors isomorphic to the full Dolbeault cohomology class. A similar construction establishes isomorphisms between other types of harmonic spinors and Bott-Chern, Aeppli and twisted cohomology.
We provide a thorough construction of a system of compatible determinant line bundles over spaces of Fredholm operators, fully verify that this system satisfies a number of important properties, and include explicit formulas for all relevant isomorphisms between these line bundles. We also completely describe all possible systems of compatible determinant line bundles and compare the conventions and approaches used elsewhere in the literature.
The equivalence problem for linear differential operators of the second order, acting in vector bundles, is discussed. The field of rational invariants of symbols is described and connections, naturally accosiated with differential operators, are found. These geometrical structures are used to solve the problems of local as well as global equivalency of differential operators.
We study the behavior of the spectrum of the Dirac operator on collapsing S^1-bundles. Convergent eigenvalues will exist if and only if the spin structure is projectable.
Operator fields in the bundle of Dirac spinors and their conversion to spatial fields are considered. Some commutator equations are studied with the use of the conversion technique.
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a super tangent bundle of a manifold, and extend the basic notions of differential geometry such as differential forms, exterior derivation, connection, metric and divergence on manifolds that equipped with a super tangent bundle.
We characterize the contractions that are similar to the backward shift in the Hardy space $H^2$. This characterization is given in terms of the geometry of the eigenvector bundles of the operators.
In order to facilitate the comparison of Riemannian homogeneous spaces of compact Lie groups with noncommutative geometries ("quantizations") that approximate them, we develop here the basic facts concerning equivariant vector bundles and Dirac operators over them in a way that uses only global constructions and arguments. Our approach is quite algebraic, using primarily the modules of cross-sections of vector bundles. We carry the development through the construction of Hodge--Dirac operators. The inducing construction is ubiquitous.
Let $(E,h)$ be a holomorphic Hermitian vector bundle over a polarized manifold. We provide a canonical quantization of the Laplacian operator acting on sections of the bundle of Hermitian endomorphisms of $E$. If $E$ is simple we obtain an approximation of the eigenvalues and eigenspaces of the Laplacian.
We study the asymptotic of the spectrum of the \spin Dirac operator on high tensor powers of a line bundle. As application, we get a simple proof of the main result of Guillemin-Uribe, which was originally proved by using the analysis of Toeplitz operators of Boutet de Monvel and Guillemin.
A review of the parallel transport (translation) in fibre bundles is presented. The connections between transports along paths and parallel transports in fibre bundles are examined. It is proved that the latter ones are special cases of the former.
The Serre-Swan theorem in differential geometry establishes an equivalence between the category of smooth vector bundles over a smooth compact manifold and the category of finitely generated projective modules over the unital ring of smooth functions. This theorem is here generalized to manifolds of bounded geometry. In this context it states that the category of Hilbert bundles of bounded geometry is equivalent to the category of operator *-modules over the operator *-algebra of continuously differentiable functions which vanish at infinity. Operator *-modules are generalizations of Hilbert C…
We compute the equivariant cohomology Chern character of the index of elliptic operators along the leaves of the foliation of a flat bundle. The proof is based on the study of certain algebras of pseudodifferential operators and uses techniques for analizing noncommutative algebras similar to those developed in Algebraic Topology, but in the framework of cyclic cohomology and noncommutative geometry.
Let $G$ be the identity component of the isometry group for an arbitrary curved two-point homogeneous space $M$. We consider algebras of $G$-invariant differential operators on bundles of unit spheres over $M$. The generators of this algebra and the corresponding relations for them are found. The connection of these generators with two-body problem on two-point homogeneous spaces is discussed.
A pseudo-Riemannian manifold is said to be spacelike Jordan IP if the Jordan normal form of the skew-symmetric curvature operator depends upon the point of the manifold, but not upon the particular spacelike 2-plane in the tangent bundle at that point. We use methods of algebraic topology to classify connected spacelike Jordan IP pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of signature $(p,q)$, where $q\ge 11$, $p\le \frac{q-6}{4}$ and where the set $\{q, . . ., q+p\}$ does not contain a power of 2.
We prove that the quasi-homogenous symbols on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{C})$ yield commutative algebras of Toeplitz operators on all weighted Bergman spaces, thus extending to this compact case known results for the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^n$. These algebras are Banach but not $C^*$. We prove the existence of a strong link between such symbols and algebras with the geometry of $\mathbb{P}^n(\mathbb{C})$. The latter is also proved for the corresponding symbols and algebras on $\mathbb{B}^n$.
We study the geometry and topology of (filtered) algebra-bundles ${\bfΨ}^{\mathbb Z}$ over a smooth manifold $X$ with typical fibre $Ψ^{\mathbb Z}(Z; V)$, the algebra of classical pseudodifferential operators of integral order on the compact manifold $Z$ acting on smooth sections of a vector bundle $V$. First a theorem of Duistermaat and Singer is generalized to the assertion that the group of projective invertible Fourier integral operators ${\rm PGL}({\mathcal F}^\bullet(Z; V))$, is precisely the automorphism group, ${\rm Aut}(Ψ^{\mathbb Z}(Z; V)),$ of the filtered algebra of pseudodifferent…
It is shown that the determinant line bundle associated to a family of Dirac operators over a closed partitioned manifold has a canonical Hermitian metric with compatible connection whose curvature satisfies an additivity formula with contributions from the families of Dirac operators over the two halves. This curvature form is the natural differential representative which satisifies the same splitting principle as the Chern class of the determinant line bundle.
We define the equivariant family index of a family of elliptic operators invariant with respect to the free action of a bundle $\GR$ of Lie groups. If the fibers of $\GR \to B$ are simply-connected solvable, we then compute the Chern character of the (equivariant family) index, the result being given by an Atiyah-Singer type formula. We also study traces on the corresponding algebras of pseudodifferential operators and obtain a local index formula for such families of invariant operators, using the Fedosov product. For topologically non-trivial bundles we have to use methods of non-commutative…
We compute the spectrum of the Dirac operator on 3-dimensional Heisenberg manifolds. The behavior under collapse to the 2-torus is studied. Depending on the spin structure either all eigenvalues tend to $\pm\infty$ or there are eigenvalues converging to those of the torus. This is shown to be true in general for collapsing circle bundles with totally geodesic fibers. Using the Hopf fibration we use this fact to compute the Dirac eigenvalues on complex projective space including the multiplicities. Finally, we show that there are 1-parameter families of Riemannian nilmanifolds such that the Lap…
The Schroedinger operators on the Newtonian space-time are defined in a way which make them independent on the class of inertial observers. In this picture the Schroedinger operators act not on functions on the space-time but on sections of certain one-dimensional complex vector bundle -- the Schroedinger line bundle. This line bundle has trivializations indexed by inertial observers and is associated with an U(1)-principal bundle with an analogous list of trivializations -- the Schroedinger principal bundle. For the Schroedinger principal bundle a natural differential calculus for `wave forms…
We consider Schrödinger operators $H=-Δ_{g_\varepsilon} + V$ on a fibre bundle $M\stackrelπ{\to}B$ with compact fibres and a metric $g_\varepsilon$ that blows up directions perpendicular to the fibres by a factor ${\varepsilon^{-1}\gg 1}$. We show that for an eigenvalue $λ$ of the fibre-wise part of $H$, satisfying a local gap condition, and every $N\in \mathbb{N}$ there exists a subspace of $L^2(M)$ that is invariant under $H$ up to errors of order $\varepsilon^{N+1}$. The dynamical and spectral features of $H$ on this subspace can be described by an effective operator on the fibre-wise $λ$-e…
We explain the bundle structures of the {\it Determinant line bundle} and the {\it Quillen determinant line bundle} considered on the connected component of the space of Fredholm operators including the identity operator in an intrinsic way. Then we show that these two are isomorphic and that they are non-trivial line bundles and trivial on some subspaces. Also we remark a relation of the {\it Quillen determinant line bundle} and the {\it Maslov line bundle}.
We give a method of decomposing bundle-valued polynomials compatible with the action of the Lie group $Spin(n)$, where important tools are $Spin(n)$-equivariant operators and their spectral decompositions. In particular, the top irreducible component is realized as an intersection of kernels of these operators.
Mathai, Melrose, and Singer introduced the notion of projective elliptic operators on manifolds equipped with an Azumaya bundle. In this note we compute the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators that are the pullback of projective elliptic operators on the trivialization of the Azumaya bundle. It encompasses the fractional index formula of projective elliptic operator by Mathai-Melrose-Singer.
We prove sharp inequalities for determinants of Toeplitz operators and twisted Laplace operators on the two-sphere, generalizing the Moser-Trudinger-Onofri inequality. In particular a sharp version of conjectures of Gillet-Soule and Fang motivated by Arakelov geometry is obtained; applications to SU(2)-invariant determinantal random point processes on the two-sphere are also discussed. The inequalities are obtained as corollaries of a general theorem about the maximizers of a certain non-local functional defined on the space of all positively curved Hermitian metrics on an ample line bundle ov…
We establish Hörmander-type $L^2$-estimates for the $\overline{\partial}$-operators that hold uniformly for all nontrivial flat holomorphic line bundles on compact Kähler manifolds. Our result can be regarded as a $\overline{\partial}$-version of Ueda's lemma on the operator norm of Čech coboundaries for flat line bundles and indeed recovers the original version of Ueda's lemma for compact Kähler manifolds. A partial generalisation for $(p,0)$-forms on Ricci-flat manifolds is also given.
Given a pair of second order diffusion operators, one on the total space of a principle bundle $N$ and the other on the base space $M$, intertwined by the projection $π:N\to M$, if the operator ${\mathcal A}$ on the base manifold has constant rank, we define a semi-connection on the principal bundle which allows to split the diffusion operator ${\mathcal B}$ on the total space into the sum of the horizontal lift of ${\mathcal A}$ and the other vertical. This allow to conclude a disintegration theorem for the law of ${\mathcal B}$. As an application, a decomposition of stochastic flow is given.
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$ equipped with flat conical metric $|Ω|$, where $Ω$ be a holomorphic quadratic differential on $X$ with $4g-4$ simple zeroes. Let $K$ be the canonical line bundle on $X$. Introduce the Cauchy-Riemann operators $\bar \partial$ and $\partial$ acting on sections of holomorphic line bundles over $X$ ($K^2$ in the definition of $Δ^{(2)}_{|Ω|}$ below) and, respectively, anti-holomorphic line bundles ($\bar { K}^{-1}$ below). Consider the Laplace operator $Δ^{(2)}_{|Ω|}:=|Ω| \partial |Ω|^{-2}\bar\partial$ acting in the Hilbert space of square int…
A universal lower bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on a compact quaternionic Kaehler manifold M of positive scalar curvature is calculated. It is shown that it is equal to the first positive eigenvalue on the quaternionic projective space. For this, the horizontal tangent bundle on the canonical SO(3)-bundle over M is equipped with a hyperkaehlerian structure and the corresponding splitting of the horizontal spinor bundle is considered. The desired estimate is obtained by looking at hyperkaehlerian twistor operators on horizontal spinors.
Given a vector bundle $A$ over a smooth manifold $M$ such that the square root $\mathcal{L}$ of the line bundle $\wedge^{\mathrm{top}}A^\ast \otimes \wedge^{\mathrm{top}}T^\ast M$ exists, the Clifford bundle associated to the split pseudo-Euclidean vector bundle $(E = A \oplus A^\ast, \langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle)$, admits a spinor bundle $\wedge^\bullet A \otimes \mathcal{L}$, whose section space can be thought of as that of Berezinian half-densities of the graded manifold $A^\ast[1]$. We give an explicit construction of Dirac generating operators of split Courant algebroid (or proto-bialgebr…
In the limit $\hbar\to 0$, we analyze a class of Schrödinger operators $H_\hbar = \hbar^2 L + \hbar W + V\cdot \mathrm{id}$ acting on sections of a vector bundle $\mathcal{Eh}$ over a Riemannian manifold $M$ where $L$ is a Laplace type operator, $W$ is an endomorphism field and the potential energy $V$ has a non-degenerate minimum at some point $p\in M$. We construct quasimodes of WKB-type near $p$ for eigenfunctions associated with the low lying eigenvalues of $H_\hbar$. These are obtained from eigenfunctions of the associated harmonic oscillator $H_{p, \hbar}$ at $p$, acting on smooth functi…
We construct bundles of modules of vertex operator algebras, and prove the rigidity and vanishing theorem for the Dirac operator on loop space twisted by such bundles. This result generalizes many previous results.
We consider the Bochner Laplacian on high tensor powers of a positive line bundle on a closed symplectic manifold (or, equivalently, the semiclassical magnetic Schrödinger operator with the non-degenerate magnetic field). We assume that the operator has discrete wells. The main result of the paper states asymptotic expansions for its low-lying eigenvalues.
We consider Dirac operators on odd-dimensional compact spin manifolds which are twisted by a product bundle. We show that the space of connections on the twisting bundle which yield an invertible operator has infinitely many connected components if the untwisted Dirac operator is invertible and the dimension of the twisting bundle is sufficiently large.
