We give a method of decomposing bundle-valued polynomials compatible with the action of the Lie group $Spin(n)$, where important tools are $Spin(n)$-equivariant operators and their spectral decompositions. In particular, the top irreducible component is realized as an intersection of kernels of these operators.
We prove the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence between good wild harmonic bundles and polystable good filtered $λ$-flat bundles satisfying a vanishing condition. We also study the correspondence for good wild harmonic bundles with the homogeneity with respect to a group action, which is expected to provide another way to construct Frobenius manifolds.
In this paper we study the limiting behaviour of the harmonic flow on flat complex vector bundle, and prove the limit must be isomorphic to the graded flat complex vector bundle associated to the Jordan-Hölder filtration.
We establish a criterion for the flatness of a principal circle bundle in terms of the intrinsically harmonic form problem. It states that the flatness is equivalent to the intrinsic harmonicity of a certain natural associated form.
We study harmonic sections of a Riemannian vector bundle whose total space is equipped with a 2-parameter family of metrics which includes both the Sasaki and Cheeger-Gromoll metrics. This enables the theory of harmonic unit sections to be extended to bundles with non-zero Euler class.
In this paper, we study the non-Hermitian Yang-Mills (NHYM for short) bundles over compact Kähler manifolds. We show that the existence of harmonic metrics is equivalent to the semisimplicity of NHYM bundles, which confirms the Conjecture 8.7 in \cite{KV}.
We show a relationship between Chern-Simons 1- and 3-forms and harmonic forms on a principal bundle. Doing so requires one to consider an adiabatic limit. For the 3-form case, assume that G is simple and the corresponding Chern-Weil 4-form is exact. Then, the Chern-Simons 3-form on the princpal bundle G-bundle, minus a canonical term from the base, is harmonic in the adiabatic limit.
We use the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence for parabolic bundles to reprove the results of Troyanov and Luo-Tian regarding existence and uniqueness of conformal spherical metrics on the Riemann sphere with prescribed cone angles in the interval $(0, 2π)$ at a given configuration of three or more points.
We define the notion of a loop Hodge structure -- an infinite dimensional generalization of a Hodge structure -- and prove that a suitable variation of this object over a complex manifold is equivalent to the datum of a harmonic bundle. Hence one can study harmonic bundles using classical tools of Hodge theory, especially the existence of a period map (with values in an infinite dimensional period domain). Among other applications, we prove an integrality result for the Hitchin energy class of a harmonic bundle.
We study (i) asymptotic behaviour of wild harmonic bundles, (ii) the relation between semisimple meromorphic flat connections and wild harmonic bundles, (iii) the relation between wild harmonic bundles and polarized wild pure twistor $D$-modules. As an application, we show the hard Lefschetz theorem for algebraic semisimple holonomic $D$-modules, conjectured by M. Kashiwara.
Recently we initiated the study of spherical T-duality for spacetimes that are principal SU(2)-bundles. In this paper, we extend spherical T-duality to spacetimes that are oriented non-principal SU(2)-bundles. There are several interesting new examples in this case and a new phenomenon appearing in the non-principal case is the existence of infinitely many spherical T-duals.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective complex variety with an ample line bundle $L$, and let $D$ be a simple normal crossing divisor. We establish the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence between tame harmonic bundles on $X-D$ and $μ_L$-stable parabolic $λ$-flat bundles with trivial characteristic numbers on $(X,D)$. Especially, we obtain the quasiprojective version of the Corlette-Simpson correspondence between flat bundles and Higgs bundles.
This survey studies equivariant harmonic maps arising from Higgs bundles. We explain the non-abelian Hodge correspondence and focus on the role of equivariant harmonic maps in the correspondence. With the preparation, we review current progress towards some open problems in the study of equivariant harmonic maps.
In this paper we investigate the moduli space of parabolic Higgs bundles over a punctured Riemann surface with varying weights at the punctures. We show that the harmonic metric depends analytically on the weights and the stable Higgs bundle. This gives a Higgs bundle generalisation of a theorem of McOwen on the existence of hyperbolic cone metrics on a punctured surface within a given conformal class, and a generalisation of a theorem of Judge on the analytic parametrisation of these metrics.
In this note, we propose an approach to the study of the analogue for unipotent harmonic bundles of Schmid's Nilpotent Orbit Theorem. Using this approach, we construct harmonic metrics on unipotent bundles over quasi-compact Kähler manifolds with carefully controlled asymptotics near the compactifying divisor; such a metric is unique up to some isometry. Such an asymptotic behavior is canonical in some sense.
We demonstrate that it is conceptually and computationally favorable to regard spin-weighted spherical harmonics as vector valued functions on the total space $SO(3)$ of the Hopf bundle, satisfying a covariance condition with respect to the gauge group $U(1)$ of this bundle. A key role is played by the invariant connection form of the principle Hopf bundle, known to physicists from the geometry behind magnetic monopoles.
Let $(M_{2k},φ,g)$ be an almost anti-paraHermitian manifold and $(TM,g_{BS})$ be its tangent bundle with a Berger type deformed Sasaki metric $g_{BS}$. In this paper, we deal with the harmonicity of the canonical projection $π:TM\rightarrow M$ and a vector field $ξ$ which is considered as a map $ξ:M\rightarrow TM$.
Let $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle. Let $θ$ be a Higgs field, that is a holomorphic section of $End(E)\otimesΩ^{1,0}_X$ satisfying $θ^2=0$. Let $h$ be a pluriharmonic metric of the Higgs bundle $(E,θ)$. The tuple $(E,θ,h)$ is called a harmonic bundle. Let $X$ be a complex manifold, and $D$ be a normal crossing divisor of $X$. In this paper, we study the harmonic bundle $(E,θ,h)$ over $X-D$. We regard $D$ as the singularity of $(E,θ,h)$, and we are particularly interested in the asymptotic behaviour of the harmonic bundle around $D$. We will see that it is similar to the asymptotic behaviou…
We give a general description of the construction of weighted spherically symmetric metrics on vector bundle manifolds, i.e. the total space of a vector bundle $E\rightarrow M$, over a Riemannian manifold $M$, when $E$ is endowed with a metric connection. The tangent bundle of $E$ admits a canonical decomposition and thus it is possible to define an interesting class of two-weights metrics with the weight functions depending on the fibre norm of $E$; hence the generalized concept of spherically symmetric metrics. We study its main properties and curvature equations. Finally we focus on a few a…
We consider the energy functional on the space of sections of a sphere bundle over a Riemannian manifold (M, <,>) equipped with the Sasaki metric and we discuss the characterising condition for critical points. Likewise, we provide a useful method for computing the tension field in some particular situations. Such a method is shown to be adequate for many tensor fields defined on manifolds M equipped with a G-structure compatible with <,>. This leads to the construction of a lot of new examples of differential forms which are harmonic sections or determine a harmonic map from (M,<,>) into its …
Let $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle endowed with a singular Hermitian metric $H$. In this paper, we develop the harmonic theory on $(E,H)$. Then we extend several canonical results of J. Kollár and K. Takegoshi to this situation. In the end, we generalise Nakano's vanishing theorem.
We establish the correspondence between tame harmonic bundles and $μ_L$-stable parabolic Higgs bundles with trivial characteristic numbers. We also show the Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality for $μ_L$-stable parabolic Higgs bundles. Then we show that any local system on a smooth quasi projective variety can be deformed to a variation of polarized Hodge structure. As a consequence, we can conclude that some kind of discrete groups cannot be a split quotient of the fundamental group of a smooth quasi projective variety.
I define an algebraic metric and closed 3-form on a subspace $\mathcal{M}$ of the moduli of $G$-bundles on a complex projective curve $C$, and show that the resulting two-dimensional $σ$-model with target $\mathcal{M}$ has a zero-curvature formulation.
We study critical points of holomorphic sections of $\ocal(m)$ on $\CP^n$. For quadrics, we give a complete discription of their critical points. When $n=1$, we prove a spherical Gauss-Lucas theorem. For general situation, we prove that a general section has all its critical points isolated and non-degenerate.
In this paper, we revisit the analyses of Antonie Stern (1925) and Hans Lewy (1977) devoted to the construction of spherical harmonics with two or three nodal domains. Our method yields sharp quantitative results and a better understanding of the occurrence of bifurcations in the families of nodal sets. This paper is a natural continuation of our critical reading of A. Stern's results for Dirichlet eigenfunctions in the square, see arXiv:14026054.
We show that real and imaginary parts of equivariant spherical harmonics on $S^3$ have almost surely a single nodal component. Moreover, if the degree of the spherical harmonic is $N$ and the equivariance degree is $m$, then the expected genus is proportional to $m \left(\frac{N^2 - m^2}{2} + N\right) $. Hence if $\frac{m}{N}= c $ for fixed $0 < c < 1$, the genus has order $N^3$.
Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian manifold. When $M$ is compact and the tangent bundle $TM$ is equipped with the Sasaki metric $g^s$, the only vector fields which define harmonic maps from $(M,g)$ to $(TM,g^s)$, are the parallel ones. The Sasaki metric, and other well known Riemannian metrics on $TM$, are particular examples of $g$-natural metrics. We equip $TM$ with an arbitrary Riemannian $g$-natural metric $G$, and investigate the harmonicity of a vector field $V$ of $M$, thought as a map from $(M,g)$ to $(TM,G)$. We then apply this study to the Reeb vector field and, in particular, to Hopf vecto…
We consider Dirac operators on odd-dimensional compact spin manifolds which are twisted by a product bundle. We show that the space of connections on the twisting bundle which yield an invertible operator has infinitely many connected components if the untwisted Dirac operator is invertible and the dimension of the twisting bundle is sufficiently large.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of tame harmonic bundles. First of all, we prove a local freeness of the prolongation by an increasing order. Then we obtain the polarized mixed twistor structure. As one of the applications, we obtain the norm estimate of holomorphic or flat sections by weight filtrations of the monodromies. As other application, we establish the correspondence of semisimple regular holonomic $D$-modules and polarizable pure imaginary pure twistor $D$-modules through a tame pure imaginary harmonic bundles, which is a conjecture of Sabbah. Then the regular holonomic version of…
We investigate monotonicity properties of $p$-harmonic vector bundle-valued $k$-forms by studying the energy-momentum tensor associated with such a form. As a consequence, we obtain a unified proof of the monotonicity formulæ for $p$-harmonic maps and Yang-Mills connections, proving a monotonicity formula for $p$-Yang-Mills connections in the process. Moreover, it is shown how this technique may be adapted to yield an analogous monotonicity formula for Yang-Mills-Higgs pairs. Finally, we obtain Liouville-type theorems for such forms and Yang-Mills-Higgs pairs as an application.
We study the tt*-geometry with vanishing endormorphism $\mathcal{U}$. Given an integrable harmonic Higgs bundle $(E, h, Φ, \mathcal{U},\mathcal{Q})$ on a complex manifold $M$, Firstly we prove that, under the \emph{IS} condition, vanishing $\mathcal{U}$ implies vanishing Higgs field $Φ$ and the Chern connection of the Hermitian Einstein metric $h$ is a holomorphic connection, so the metric $h$ and $\mathcal{Q}$ are invariant. Secondly, without the \emph{IS} condition, we show that vanishing $\mathcal{U}$ will imply vanishing Higgs field $Φ$ if we assume that the Chern connection of $h$ is a ho…
We study a certain type of wild harmonic bundles in relation with a Toda equation. We explain how to obtain a classification of the real valued solutions of the Toda equation in terms of their parabolic weights, from the viewpoint of the Kobayashi-Hitchin correspondence. Then, we study the associated integrable variation of twistor structure. In particular, we give a criterion for the existence of an integral structure. It follows from two results. One is the explicit computation of the Stokes factors of a certain meromorphic flat bundle. The other is an explicit description of the associated …
In this paper, we prove that the harmonicity of a metric on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold is equivalent to the harmonicity of both its Sasaki (resp. horizontal and complete) lift metric on the tangent bundle and its Sasaki lift metric on the cotangent bundle. Some applications are included.
In this note, we consider a fixed vector field $V$ on $S^2$ and study the distribution of points which lie on the nodal set (of a random spherical harmonic) where $V$ is also tangent. We show that the expected value of the corresponding counting function is asymptotic to the eigenvalue with a leading coefficient that is independent of the vector field $V$. This demonstrates, in some form, a universality for vector fields up to lower order terms.
We give a complete classification of Riemannian and Lorentzian surfaces of arbitrary codimension in a pseudo-sphere whose pseudo-spherical Gauss maps are of 1-type or, in particular, harmonic. In some cases a concrete global classification is obtained, while in other cases the solutions are described by an explicit system of partial differential equations.
We define the C^*-action on moduli spaces of reductive representations of fundamental groups of quasi-compact Kaehler manifolds by solving Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation. As applications in algebraic geometry we show a non-abelian Hodge (p,q)-type theorem for families of quasi-projective manifolds. We also prove that any discrete sub group of a Lie group of rank >1 that is not of Hodge type can't be the fundamental group of a quasi-compact Kaehler manifold.
P. Baird and the second author studied harmonic morphisms from a three-dimensional simply-connected space form to a surface and obtained a complete local and global classification of them. In this paper, we obtain a description of all harmonic morphisms from any three-dimensional Euclidean and spherical space form to a surface, namely that any such harmonic morphism is the composition of a standard harmonic morphism and a weakly conformal map. We list the standard harmonic morphisms.
We compute the Szego kernel of the unit circle bundle of a negative line bundle dual to a regular quantum line bundle over a compact Kaehler manifold. As a corollary we provide an infinite family of smoothly bounded strictly pseudoconvex domains on complex manifolds (disk bundles over homogeneous Hodge manifolds) for which the log-terms in the Fefferman expansion of the Szego kernel vanish and which are not locally CR-equivalent to the sphere. We also give a proof of the fact that, for homogeneous Hodge manifolds, the existence of a locally spherical CR-structure on the unit circle bundle alon…
We say that a distribution is harmonic if it is harmonic when considered as a section of a Grassmann bundle. We find new examples of harmonic distributions and show nonexistense of harmonic distrubutions on some Riemannian manifolds by two different approaches. Firstly, we lift distributions to the second tangent bundle equipped with the Sasaki metric. Secondly, we deform conformally the metric on a base manifold.
The spherical Fourier transform on a harmonic Hadamard manifold $(X^n, g)$ of positive volume entropy is studied. If $(X^n, g)$ is of hypergeometric type, namely spherical functions of $X$ are represented by the Gauss hypergeometric functions, the inversion formula, the convolution rule together with the Plancherel theorem are shown by the representation of the spherical functions in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions. A geometric characterization of hypergeometric type is derived in terms of volume density of geodesic spheres. Geometric properties of $(X^n, g)$ are also discussed.
Let $(E,\overline{\partial}_E,θ)$ be a stable Higgs bundle of degree $0$ on a compact connected Riemann surface. Once we fix the flat metric $h_{\det(E)}$ on the determinant of $E$, we have the harmonic metrics $h_t$ $(t>0)$ for the stable Higgs bundles $(E,\overline{\partial}_E,tθ)$ such that $\det(h_t)=h_{\det(E)}$. We study the behaviour of $h_t$ when $t$ goes to $\infty$. First, we show that the Hitchin equation is asymptotically decoupled under the assumption that the Higgs field is generically regular semisimple. We apply it to the study of the so called Hitchin WKB-problem. Second, we s…
We introduce the notions of Chern-Dirac bundles and Chern-Dirac operators on Hermitian manifolds. They are analogues of classical Dirac bundles and Dirac operators, with Levi-Civita connection replaced by Chern connection. We then show that the tensor product of canonical and the anticanonical spinor bundles, called V-spinor bundle, is a bigraded Chern-Dirac bundle with spaces of harmonic spinors isomorphic to the full Dolbeault cohomology class. A similar construction establishes isomorphisms between other types of harmonic spinors and Bott-Chern, Aeppli and twisted cohomology.
We observe, utilize dualities in differential equations and differential inequalities, dualities between comparison theorems in differential equations, and obtain dualities in "swapping" comparison theorems in differential equations. These dualities generate comparison theorems on differential equations of mixed types I and II and lead to comparison theorems in Riemannian geometry with analytic, geometric, P.D.E.'s and physical applications. In particular, we prove Hessian comparison theorems and Laplacian comparison theorem under varied radial Ricci curvature or radial curvature assumptions, …
Willmore surfaces are the extremals of the Willmore functional (possibly under a constraint on the conformal structure). With the characterization of Willmore surfaces by the (possibly perturbed) harmonicity of the mean curvature sphere congruence [Blaschke, Ejiri, Rigoli, Burstall-Calderbank], a zero-curvature formulation follows [Burstall-Calderbank]. Deformations on the level of harmonic maps prove to give rise to deformations on the level of surfaces, with the definition of a spectral deformation [Burstall-Pedit-Pinkall, Burstall-Calderbank] and of a Baecklund transformation [Burstall-Quin…
A cone spherical metric is called irreducible if any developing map of the metric does not have monodromy in ${\rm U(1)}$. By using the theory of indigenous bundles, we construct on a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g_X \geq 1$ a canonical surjective map from the moduli space of stable extensions of two line bundles to that of irreducible metrics with cone angles in $2 π\mathbb{Z}_{>1}$, which is generically injective in the algebro-geometric sense as $g_X \geq 2$. As an application, we prove the following two results about irreducible metrics: $\bullet$ as $g_X \geq 2$ and $d$ is even a…
Let $f:X\to Y$ be a morphism of complex manifolds. Suppose that $X$ is a Kähler manifold. Let $(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{S})$ be a regular polarized pure twistor $\mathcal{D}$-module of weight $w$ on $X$ whose support is proper over $Y$. We prove the Hard Lefschetz Theorem for the push-forward of $(\mathcal{T},\mathcal{S})$ by $f$. As one of the key steps, we obtain the twistor version of a theorem of Kashiwara and Kawai about the Hodge structure on the intersection complex of polarized variation of Hodge structure.
We show that there exists an integrable function on the $n$-sphere $(n\ge 2)$, whose Cesàro (C,$\frac{n-1}{2}$) means with respect to the spherical harmonic expansion diverge unboundedly almost everywhere. By studying equivalence theorems, we also obtain the corresponding results for Riesz and Bochner-Riesz means. This extends results of Stein (1961) for flat tori and complements the work of Taibleson (1985) for spheres.
Let $L$ be a local system on a smooth quasi projective variety over $\cnum$. We see that $L$ is semisimple if and only if there exists a tame pure imaginary pluri-harmonic metric on $L$. Although it is a rather minor refinement of a result of Jost and Zuo, it is significant for the study of harmonic bundles and pure twistor $D$-modules. As one of the application, we show that the semisimplicity of local systems are preserved by the pull back via a morphism of quasi projective varieties. This paper will be included as an appendix to our previous paper, ``Asymptotic behaviour of tame harmonic bu…
