A cone spherical metric is called irreducible if any developing map of the metric does not have monodromy in ${\rm U(1)}$. By using the theory of indigenous bundles, we construct on a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g_X \geq 1$ a canonical surjective map from the moduli space of stable extensions of two line bundles to that of irreducible metrics with cone angles in $2 π\mathbb{Z}_{>1}$, which is generically injective in the algebro-geometric sense as $g_X \geq 2$. As an application, we prove the following two results about irreducible metrics:
$\bullet$ as $g_X \geq 2$ and $d$ is even and greater than $12g_X - 7$, the effective divisors of degree $d$ which could be represented by irreducible metrics form an arcwise connected Borel subset of Hausdorff dimension $\geq 2(d+3-3g_X)$ in ${\rm Sym}^d(X)$;
$\bullet$ as $g_X \geq 1$, for almost every effective divisor $D$ of degree odd and greater than $2g_X-2$ on $X$, there exist finitely many cone spherical metrics representing $D$.
We exhibit the irreducible components of the nilpotent cone of the tadpole quiver of arbitrarily high codimension and introduce an approach that could allow to describe all of them.
We construct an irreducible holomorphic connection with SL(2,R)-monodromy on the trivial holomorphic vector bundle of rank two over a compact Riemann surface. This answers a question of Calsamiglia, Deroin, Heu and Loray in \cite{CDHL}.
We generalize Bertram's work on rank two vector bundles to an irreducible projective nodal curve C. We use extensions of a line bundle L by O_C and the associated `forgetful' map to study a compactification of the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of rank 2 and determinant L on C.
Under some conditions on the deformation type, which we expect to be satisfied for arbitrary irreducible symplectic varieties, we describe which big and nef line bundles on irreducible symplectic varieties have base divisors. In particular, we show that such base divisors are always irreducible and reduced. This is applied to understand the behaviour of divisorial base components of big and nef line bundles under deformations and for K3$^{[n]}$-type and Kum$^n$-type.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve defined over an algebraically closed field $k$, and let $E$ be a vector bundle on $X$. We compute the nef cone of any flag bundle associated to $E$.
Let $X = \mathbb{P}(E_1) \times_C \mathbb{P}(E_2)$ where $C$ is a smooth curve and $E_1$, $E_2$ are vector bundles over $C$.In this paper we compute the pseudo effective cones of higher codimension cycles on $X$.
This note is an attempt to generalize Bolibruch's theorem from the projective line to curves of higher genus. We show that an irreducible representation of the fundamental group of an open in a curve of higher genus has always a representation as a regular system of differential equations on a semistable bundle of degree 0. Vice-versa, we show that given such a bundle and 3 points on the curve, one can construct an irreducible representation of the curve minus the 3 points such that an associated regular system of differential equations lives on this bundle.
Givental has defined a Lagrangian cone in a symplectic vector space which encodes all genus-zero Gromov-Witten invariants of a smooth projective variety X. Let Y be the subvariety in X given by the zero locus of a regular section of a convex vector bundle. We review arguments of Iritani, Kim-Kresch-Pantev, and Graber, which give a very simple relationship between the Givental cone for Y and the Givental cone for Euler-twisted Gromov-Witten invariants of X. When the convex vector bundle is the direct sum of nef line bundles, this gives a sharper version of the Quantum Lefschetz Hyperplane Princ…
In this article, we give a description of the closed cone of curves of the projective bundle $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over a smooth projective variety $X$. Using duality, we then calculate the nef cone of divisors in $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over some special surfaces $X$ and for some special bundles on $X$. As an application, we also calculate the Seshadri constants of semistable ample vector bundles with vanishing discriminant on some special ruled surfaces at special points.
We study the holomorphic vector bundles E over the twistor space Tw(M) of a compact simply connected hyperkähler manifold $M$. We give a characterization of the semistability condition for E in terms of its restrictions to the holomorphic sections of the holomorphic twistor projection π:Tw(M)\rightarrow CP^1. It is shown that if E admits a holomorphic connection, then E is holomorphically trivial and the holomorphic connection on E is trivial as well. For any irreducible vector bundle E on Tw(M) of prime rank, we prove that its restriction to the generic fibre of πis stable. On the other hand,…
Generalizing work done by Miyaoka and others in the case of divisors and of curves, we compute the cones of effective cycles of arbitrary dimension on a projective bundle over a complex projective curve in terms of the numerical data in an associated Harder-Narasimhan filtration. An application to cycles on projective bundles over a smooth complex projective base of arbitrary dimension is also given.
We develop a new general method for computing the decomposition type of the normal bundle to a projective rational curve. This method is then used to detect and explain an example of a Hilbert scheme that parametrizes all the rational curves in $\mathbb{P}^s$ with a given decomposition type of the normal bundle and that has exactly two irreducible components. This gives a negative answer to the very old question whether such Hilbert schemes are always irreducible. We also characterize smooth non-degenerate rational curves contained in rational normal scroll surfaces in terms of the splitting t…
It is known that the cotangent bundle $Ω_Y$ of an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space $Y$ of compact type is stable. Except for a few obvious exceptions, we show that if $X \subset Y$ is a complete intersection such that $Pic(Y) \to Pic(X)$ is surjective, then the restriction $Ω_{Y|X}$ is stable. We then address some cases where the Picard group increases by restriction.
This paper gives a combinatorial description of the set of irreducible components of the semistable locus of the global nilpotent cone, in genus $\ge2$. The first main result of this paper states that the set of irreducible components of the global nilpotent cone is given by the very natural decomposition in twisted Jordan strata, which are smooth. Then we move on to the semistable locus and obtain purely combinatorial conditions on the twisted Jordan type to be semistable. The proof uses an analogous result obtained in the context of moduli stacks of chains, and shows that semistability can b…
Let $G$ be a real reductive Lie group, and $H^{\mathbb{C}}$ the complexification of its maximal compact subgroup $H\subset G$. We consider classes of semistable $G$-Higgs bundles over a Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g\geq2$ whose underlying $H^{\mathbb{C}}$-principal bundle is unstable. This allows us to find obstructions to a deformation retract from the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles over $X$ to the moduli space of $H^{\mathbb{C}}$-bundles over $X$, in contrast with the situation when $g=1$, and to show reducibility of the nilpotent cone of the moduli space of $G$-Higgs bundles, for $G$ c…
Let $E$ be a vector bundle of rank $r$ on a smooth complex projective variety $X$. In this article, we compute the nef and pseudoeffective cones of divisors in the Grassmann bundle $Gr_X(k,E)$ parametrizing $k$-dimensional subspaces of the fibers of $E$, where $1\leq k \leq rank(E)$, under assumptions on $X$ as well as on the vector bundle $E$. In particular, we show that nef cone and the pseudoeffective cone of $Gr_X(k,E)$ coincide if and only if $E$ is a slope semistable bundle on $X$ with $c_2(End(E))=0$. We also discuss about the nefness and ampleness of the universal quotient bundle $Q_k$…
Let $X = \mathbb{P}(E_1) \times_C \mathbb{P}(E_2)$ where $C$ is a smooth curve and let $E_1$, $E_2$ be vector bundles over $C$. In this paper, we extend the results in \cite{K-M-R} by computing the nef cone of $X$ without restriction on the rank or semistability of $E_1$ and $E_2$. We also study the Seshadri constants of ample line bundles on $X$. We calculate the Seshadri constants in some cases and give bounds in some of the remaining cases.
In this note we study two features of submanifolds (subvarieties) with ample normal bundles in a compact Kähler manifold X. First, we study how algebraic X can be, i.e. we investigate the algebraic dimension. Second, we study curves with ample normal bundles in case X is projective. We prove in various cases that the class of the curve is in the interior of the Mori cone.
Let $V$ be a $K$-vector space of dimension $n+1$. In this paper, we focus our attention into the existence of irreducible homogeneous Ulrich bundles on flag manifolds $\FF(p, q,n)$ which parameterizes all chains of linear subspaces $L_{p} \subset L_{q} \subset \PP(V)$ of dimension $p< q$, respectively. We determine all irreducible homogeneous Ulrich bundles on $\FF(0,n-1,n)$ and we prove that there are exactly $2^{n-1}$. Similarly, we prove that $\FF(0,n-2,n)$ and $\FF(1,n-1,n)$ are also the support of irreducible homogeneous Ulrich bundles. On the other hand, we prove that $\FF(0,1,n)$ do not…
For a stable irreducible curve $X$ and a torsion free sheaf $L$ on $X$ of rank one and degree $d$, D.S. Nagaraj and C.S. Seshadri ([NS]) defined a closed subset $\Cal U_X(r,L)$ in the moduli space of semistable torsion free sheaves of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on $X$. We prove that $\Cal U_X(r,L)$ is irreducible, when a smooth curve $Y$ specializes to $X$ and a line bundle $\Cal L$ on $Y$ specializes to $L$, the specialization of moduli space of semistable rank $r$ vector bundles on $Y$ with fixed determinant $\Cal L$ has underlying set $\Cal U_X(r,L)$. For rank 2 and 3, we show that there is a …
We study the null-cone of a semi-simple algebraic group acting on a number of copies of its Lie algebra via the diagonal adjoint action. We show that the null cone has rational singularities in the case of SL3. We observe by example that the null-cone is not normal in general and that the normalization of the null-cone does not have rational singularities in general. This is achieved by computing cohomology of certain vector bundles on flag varieties.
We shall construct a natural Higgs bundle structure on the complexified Kähler cone of a compact Kähler manifold, which can be seen as an analogy of the classical Higgs bundle structure associated to a variation of Hodge structure. In the proof of the flat-ness of our Higgs bundle, we find a commutator identity that can be used to decode the variational properties of the polarized Hodge-Lefschetz module structure on the fibres of our Higgs bundle. Thus we can use a generalized version of Lu's Hodge metric to study the curvature property of the complexified Kähler cone. In particular, it implie…
We study projectivizations of a special class of toric vector bundles that includes cotangent bundles, whose associated Klyachko filtrations are particularly simple. For these projectivized bundles, we give generators for the cone of effective divisors and a presentation of the Cox ring as a polynomial algebra over the Cox ring of a blowup of a projective space along a sequence of linear subspaces. As applications, we show that the projectivized cotangent bundles of some toric varieties are not Mori dream spaces and give examples of projectivized toric vector bundles whose Cox rings are isomor…
In this article, we consider the projective bundle $\mathbb{P}_X(E)$ over a smooth complex projective variety $X$, where $E$ is a semistable bundle on $X$ with $c_2(End(E)) =0$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition to get the equality $ Nef^1\bigl(\mathbb{P}_X(E)\bigr) = \overline{Eff}^1\bigl(\mathbb{P}_X(E)\bigr)$ of nef cone and pseudoeffective cone of divisors in $\mathbb{P}_X(E)$. As an application of our result, we show the equality of nef and pseudoeffective cones of divisors of projective bundles over some special varieties. In particular, we show that weak Zariski decomposition…
We study Givental's Lagrangian cone for the quantum orbifold cohomology of toric stack bundles and prove that the I-function gives points in the Lagrangian cone, namely we construct an explicit slice of the Lagrangian cone defined by the genus $0$ Gromov-Witten theory of a toric stack bundle.
In this note we study properties of partially ample line bundles on simplicial projective toric varieties. We prove that the cone of q-ample line bundles is a union of rational polyhedral cones, and calculate these cones in examples. We prove a restriction theorem for big q-ample line bundles, and deduce that q-ampleness of the anticanonical bundle is not invariant under flips. Finally we prove a Kodaira-type vanishing theorem for q-ample line bundles.
We obtain a complete description of the effective cone of $C_{g-2}$ when $C$ is a general curve of genus $g \geq 6,$ as well as a new bound in the case where $C$ is a smooth plane quintic. In addition, we obtain a new virtual bound for the effective cone of $C_{g-2m}$ which is a genuine bound when $m=2,$ and we also characterize certain natural divisors on $C_{g-2}$ as subordinate loci associated to adjunctions of kernel bundles.
We prove some finiteness results on the movable cone for mildly singular 3-folds with semiample anticanonical bundle, giving some evidence for the Morrison--Kawamata cone conjecture for klt pairs.
Noncommutative Kähler structures were recently introduced by the second author as a framework for studying noncommutative Kähler geometry on quantum homogeneous spaces. It was subsequently observed that the notion of a positive vector bundle directly generalises to this setting, as does the Kodaira vanishing theorem. In this paper, by restricting to covariant Kähler structures of irreducible type (those having an irreducible space of holomorphic one-forms) we provide simple cohomological criteria for positivity, offering a means to avoid explicit curvature calculations. These general results a…
Cone spherical metrics are conformal metrics with constant curvature one and finitely many conical singularities on compact Riemann surfaces. A cone spherical metric is called irreducible if each developing map of the metric does not have monodromy lying in ${\rm U(1)}$. We establish on compact Riemann surfaces of positive genera a correspondence between irreducible cone spherical metrics with cone angles being integral multiples of $2π$ and line subbundles of rank two stable vector bundles. Then we are motivated by it to prove a theorem of Lange-type that there always exists a stable extensio…
Take an irreducible smooth projective curve $X$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and fix finitely many distinct point $D\, =\, \{x_1,\, \cdots,\, x_n\}$ of it; for each point $x\, \in\, D$ fix a positive integer $N_x$. Take a nonconstant map $f\, :\, Y\, \longrightarrow \, X$ from an irreducible smooth projective curve. We construct a natural subbundle $\mathcal{F}\, \subset\, f_*{\mathcal O}_Y$ using $(D,\, \{N_x\}_{x\in D})$. Let $E_*$ be a stable parabolic vector bundle whose parabolic weights at each $x\, \in\, D$ are integral multiples of $\frac{1}{N_x}$.…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for moduli spaces of semistable chains on a curve to be irreducible and non-empty. This gives information on the irreducible components of the nilpotent cone of GL_n-Higgs bundles and the irreducible components of moduli of systems of Hodge bundles on curves. As we do not impose coprimality restrictions, we can apply this to prove connectedness for moduli spaces of U(p,q)-Higgs bundles.
We use the G-invariant non-degenerate form on the Steinberg module to Frobenius split the cotangent bundle of a flag variety in good prime characteristics. This was previously only known for the general linear group. Applications are a vanishing theorem for pull back of line bundles to the cotangent bundle (proved for the classical groups and G_2 by Andersen and Jantzen and in characteristic zero by B. Broer (for all groups)), normality and rational singularities for the subregular nilpotent variety and good filtrations of the global sections of pull backs of line bundles to the cotangent bund…
Let X be as smooth complex projective variety with Neron-Severi group isomorphic to Z, and D an irreducible divisor with normal crossing singularities. Assume r is equal to 2 or 3. We prove that if the fundamental group of X doesn't have irreducible PU(r) representations, then the fundamental group of X-D doesn't have irreducible U(r) representations. The proof uses the non-existence of certain stable parabolic bundles. We also obtain a similar result for GL(2) when D is smooth and X is a complex surface.
In this paper, we characterize homogeneous arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundles over isotropic Grassmannians of types $B$, $C$ and $D$ in term of step matrices. We show that there are only finitely many irreducible homogeneous ACM bundles by twisting line bundles over these isotropic Grassmannians. So we classify all homogeneous ACM bundles over isotropic Grassmannians combining the results on usual Grassmannians by Costa and Mir{ó}-Roig. Moreover, if the irreducible initialized homogeneous ACM bundles correspond to some special highest weights, then they can be characterized by succinc…
Let $M$ be the moduli space of generalized parabolic bundles (GPBs) of rank $r$ and degree $d$ on a smooth curve $X$. Let $M_{\bar L}$ be the closure of its subset consisting of GPBs with fixed determinant ${\bar L}$. We define a moduli functor for which $M_{\bar L}$ is the coarse moduli scheme. Using the correspondence between GPBs on $X$ and torsion-free sheaves on a nodal curve $Y$ of which $X$ is a desingularization, we show that $M_{\bar L}$ can be regarded as the compactified moduli scheme of vector bundles on $Y$ with fixed determinant. We get a natural scheme structure on the closure o…
We consider the problem of finding the limit at infinity (corresponding to the downward Morse flow) of a Higgs bundle in the nilpotent cone under the natural $\mathbb{C}^*$-action on the moduli space. For general rank we provide an answer for Higgs bundles with regular nilpotent Higgs field, while in rank three we give the complete answer. Our results show that the limit can be described in terms of data defined by the Higgs field, via a filtration of the underlying vector bundle.
Mehta and Seshadri have proved that the set of equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations of the fundamental group of a punctured compact Riemann surface, can be identified with equivalence classes of stable parabolic bundles of parabolic degree zero on the compact Riemann surface. In this note, we discuss the Mehta-Seshadri correspondence over an irreducible projective curve with at most nodes as singularities.
We prove that the only rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number 1 of the exceptional algebraic groups admitting irreducible equivariant Ulrich vector bundles are the Cayley plane $E_6/P_1$ and the $E_7$-adjoint variety $E_7/P_1$. From this result, we see that a general hyperplane section $F_4/P_4$ of the Cayley plane also has an equivariant but non-irreducible Ulrich bundle.
We prove the stability of the Gieseker point of an irreducible homogeneous bundle over a rational homogeneous space. As an application we get a sharp upper estimate for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian of an arbitrary Kaehler metric on a compact Hermitian symmetric spaces of ABCD--type.

In this paper we continue our study of the moduli space of stable bundles of rank two and degree 1 on a very general quintic surface. The goal in this paper is to understand the irreducible components of the moduli space in the first case in the "good" range, which is $c_2=10$. We show that there is a single irreducible component of bundles which have seminatural cohomology, and conjecture that this is the only component for all stable bundles.
Boij-Söderberg theory concerns resolutions of graded modules over a polynomial ring over a field. Specifically Boij-Söderberg theory gives a description of the cone of Betti diagrams for Cohen-Macaulay modules. Eisenbud and Schreyer discovered a duality between the cone of Betti diagrams and the cone of cohomology tables for vector bundles on projective space. In the dual theory an important role is played by so called natural vector bundles $E$ which have the property that the cohomology of every twist of $E$ is concentrated in a single degree. In [4], Eisenbud and Schreyer consider the bi-gr…
Given a complex manifold $X$, a normal crossing divisor $D\subset X$ whose irreducible components $D_1,...,D_s$ are smooth, and a choice of natural numbers $r=(r_1,...,r_s)$, we construct a manifold $X(D,\ur)$ with an action of a torus $Γ$ and we prove that some full subcategory of the category of $Γ$-equivariant vector bundles on $X(D,r)$ is equivalent to the category of parabolic vector bundles on $(X,D)$ in which the lengths of the filtrations over each irreducible component of $X$ are given by $r$. When $X$ is Kaehler, we study the Kaehler cone of $X(D,r)$ and the relation between the corr…
