In this article, we consider the projective bundle $\mathbb{P}_X(E)$ over a smooth complex projective variety $X$, where $E$ is a semistable bundle on $X$ with $c_2(End(E)) =0$. We give a necessary and sufficient condition to get the equality $ Nef^1\bigl(\mathbb{P}_X(E)\bigr) = \overline{Eff}^1\bigl(\mathbb{P}_X(E)\bigr)$ of nef cone and pseudoeffective cone of divisors in $\mathbb{P}_X(E)$. As an application of our result, we show the equality of nef and pseudoeffective cones of divisors of projective bundles over some special varieties. In particular, we show that weak Zariski decomposition exists on these projective bundles. We also show that a semistable bundle $E$ of rank $r \geq 2$ with $c_2\bigl(End(E)\bigr) = 0$ on a smooth complex projective variety of Picard number 1 is $k$-homogeneous i.e. $\overline{Eff}^k\bigl(\mathbb{P}_X(E)\bigr) = Nef^k\bigl(\mathbb{P}_{X}(E)\bigr)$ for all $1 \leq k < r$. Finally, we show that weak Zariski decomposition exists for a fibre product $\mathbb{P}_C(E)\times_C\mathbb{P}(E')$ over a smooth projective curve $C$.
Let $X$ be a nonsingular complex projective surface. The Weyl and Zariski chambers give two interesting decompositions of the big cone of $X$. We study these two decompositions and determine when a Weyl chamber is contained in the interior of a Zariski chamber and vice versa. We also determine when a Weyl chamber can intersect non-trivially with a Zariski chamber.
Zariski chambers are natural pieces into which the big cone of an algebraic surface decomposes. They have so far been studied both from a geometric and from a combinatorial perspective. In the present paper we complement the picture with a metric point of view by studying a suitable notion of chamber sizes. Our first result gives a precise condition for the nef cone volume to be finite and provides a method for computing it inductively. Our second result determines the volumes of arbitrary Zariski chambers from nef cone volumes of blow-downs. We illustrate the applicability of this method by e…
The big cone of every smooth projective surface $X$ admits the natural decomposition into Zariski chambers. The purpose of this note is to give a simple criterion for the interiors of all Zariski chambers on $X$ to be numerically determined Weyl chambers. Such a criterion generalizes the results of Bauer-Funke on K3 surfaces to arbitrary smooth projective surfaces. In the last section, we study the relation between decompositions of the big cone and elliptic fibrations on Enriques surfaces.
We continue our study of the relation between log minimal models and various types of Zariski decompositions. Let $(X,B)$ be a projective log canonical pair. We will show that $(X,B)$ has a log minimal model if either $K_X+B$ birationally has a Nakayama-Zariski decomposition with nef positive part, or that $K_X+B$ is big and birationally it has a Fujita or CKM Zariski decomposition. Along the way we introduce polarized pairs $(X,B+P)$ where $(X,B)$ is a usual projective pair and $P$ is nef, and study the birational geometry of such pairs.
We study the relations between the finite generation of Cox ring, the rationality of Euler-Chow series and Poincaré series and Zariski's conjecture on dimensions of linear systems. We prove that if the Cox ring of a smooth projective variety is finitely generated, then all Poincaré series of the variety are rational. We also prove that the multi-variable Poincaré series associated to big divisors on a smooth projective surface are rational, assuming the rationality of multi-variable Poincare series on curves.
Using currents with minimal singularities, we construct pointwise minimal multiplicities for a real pseudo-effective $(1,1)$-class $α$ on a compact complex $n$-fold $X$, which are the local obstructions to the numerical effectivity of $α$. The negative part of $α$ is then defined as the real effective divisor $N(α)$ whose multiplicity along a prime divisor $D$ is just the generic multiplicity of $α$ along $D$, and we get in that way a divisorial Zariski decomposition of $α$ into the sum of a class $Z(α)$ which is nef in codimension 1 and the class of its negative part $N(α)$, which is exceptio…
A simple sextic is a reduced complex projective plane curve of degree 6 with only simple singularities. We introduce a notion of Z-splitting curves for the double covering of the projective plane branching along a simple sextic, and investigate lattice Zariski k-ples of simple sextics by Z-splitting curves. We define specialization of lattice types, and classify all lattice types of Z-splitting curves of degree less than or equal to 3 up to specializations.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the behaviour of certain asymptotic invariants of line bundles on projective surfaces. In particular, we describe the volume of line bundles and their destabilizing numbers.
A couple of complex projective plane curves are said to make a Zariski pair if they have the same degree and the same type of singularities, but their embeddings in the projective plane are topologically different. In this paper, we present a method to construct certain type of Zariski pairs, and make infinite series of examples.
In this work, we study a family of Cremona transformations of weighted projective planes which generalize the standard Cremona transformation of the projective plane. Starting from special plane projective curves we construct families of curves in weighted projective planes with special properties. We explain how to compute the fundamental groups of their complements, using the blow-up-down decompositions of the Cremona transformations, we find examples of Zariski pairs in weighted projective planes (distinguished by the Alexander polynomial). As another application of this machinery we study …
Zariski chambers provide a natural decomposition of the big cone of an algebraic surface into rational locally polyhedral subcones that are interesting from the point of view of linear series. In the present paper we present an algorithm that allows to effectively determine Zariski chambers when the negative curves on the surface are known. We show how the algorithm can be used to compute the number of chambers on Del Pezzo surfaces.
We formulate and prove a weighted version of Zariski's hyperplane section theorem on the topological fundamental groups of the complements of hypersurfaces in a projective space. As an application, we calculate fundamental groups of the complements of certain singular projective plane curves.

The big cone of every K3 surface admits two natural chamber decompositions: the decomposition into Zariski chambers, and the decomposition into simple Weyl chambers. In the present paper we compare these two decompositions and we study their mutual relationship: First, we give a numerical criterion for the two decompositions to coincide. Secondly, we study the mutual inclusions of Zariski and simple Weyl chambers. Finally, we establish the fact that -- even though the decompositions themselves may differ -- the number of Zariski chambers always equals the number of simple Weyl chambers.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a new account of multiplicity for finite morphisms between smooth projective varieties. Traditionally, this has been defined using commutative algebra in terms of the length of integral ring extensions. In model theory, a different approch to multiplicity was developed by Zilber using the techniques of non-standard analysis. Here, we first reformulate Zilber's method in the language of algebraic geometry and secondly show that, in classical projective situations, the two notions essentially coincide. As a consequence, we can recover intersection theory i…
In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $f$ be a dominant endomorphism of a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. If there is no nonconstant invariant rational function under $f$, then there exists a closed point whose orbit under $f$ is Zariski dense. This result gives us a positive answer to the Zariski dense orbit conjecture proposed by Medvedev and Scanlon, by Amerik, Bogomolov and Rovinsky, and by Zhang, for endomorphisms of smooth projective surfaces. Moreover, we define a new canonical topology on varieties over an algebraically cl…
We prove two theorems on the locally finite decompositions of the cones of divisors by the cones which correspond to canonical and minimal models. We introduce the concept of the numerical linear systems in order to simplify the argument on the Zariski decompositions.
We present a method of Zariski-van Kampen type for the calculation of the transcendental lattice of a complex projective surface. As an application, we calculate the transcendental lattices of complex singular K3 surfaces associated with an arithmetic Zariski pair of maximizing sextics of type $A_{10}+A_{9}$ that are defined over a real quadratic field and are conjugate to each other over the field of rational numbers.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the close relation between Okounkov bodies and Zariski decompositions of pseudoeffective divisors on smooth projective surfaces. Firstly, we completely determine the limiting Okounkov bodies on such surfaces, and give applications to Nakayama constants and Seshadri constants. Secondly, we study how the shapes of Okounkov bodies change as we vary the divisors in the big cone.
We classify birational maps of projective smooth surfaces whose non-critical periodic points are Zariski dense. In particular, we show that if the first dynamical degree is greater than one, then the periodic points are Zariski dense.
This paper is an enhancement of the previous note "Explicit computations of Zariski decompositions on P_Z^1". In this paper, we observe several properties of a certain kind of an arithmetic divisor D on the n-dimensional projective space over Z and give the exact form of the Zariski decomposition of D on the projective line over Z. Further, we show that, if n>=2 and D is big and non-nef, then, for any birational morphism f: X --> P^n_Z of projective, generically smooth and normal arithmetic varieties, we can not expect a suitable Zariski decomposition of f^*(D). We also give a concrete constru…
In 1933, van Kampen described the fundamental groups of the complements of plane complex projective algebraic curves. Recently, Chéniot-Libgober proved an analogue of this result for higher homotopy groups of the complements of complex projective hypersurfaces with isolated singularities. Their description is in terms of some "homotopical variation operators". We generalize here the notion of "homotopical variation" to (singular) quasi-projective varieties. This is a first step for further generalizations of van Kampen's theorem. A conjecture, with a first approach, is stated in the special ca…
We characterize the integral Zariski decomposition of a smooth projective surface with Picard number 2 to partially solve a problem of B. Harbourne, P. Pokora, and H. Tutaj-Gasinska [Electron. Res. Announc. Math. Sci. 22 (2015), 103--108].
In this paper, we introduce \textit{splitting numbers} of subvarieties in a smooth variety for a Galois cover, and prove that the splitting numbers are invariant under certain homeomorphisms. By splitting numbers, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for two plane curves of type $(b,m)$ to be topologically equivalent as pairs of the complex projective plane and plane curves, where a plane curve of type $(b,m)$ is an arrangement of two smooth plane curves of degree $3$ and $b$ defined by I.~Shimada. Consequently, we prove that there are $π_1$-equivalent Zariski $k$-plets for any $k\geq2…
The Zariski theorem says that for every hypersurface in a complex projective (resp. affine) space of dimension at least 3 and for every generic plane in the projective (resp. affine) space the natural embedding generates an isomorphism of the fundamental groups of the complements to the hypersurface in the plane and in the space. If a family of hypersurfaces depends algebraically on parameters then it is not true in general that there exists a plane such that the natural embedding generates isomorphisms of the fundamental groups of the complements to each hypersurface from this family in the p…
We construct complex projective schemes with Lyubeznik numbers of their cones depending on the choices of projective embeddings. This answers a question of G. Lyubeznik in the characteristic 0 case. It contrasts with a theorem of W. Zhang in the positive characteristic case where the Frobenius endomorphism is used. Reducibility of schemes is essential in our argument. B. Wang recently constructed examples of irreducible projective schemes (which are not normal) from our examples of reducible ones. So the question is still open in the normal singular case.
Generalizing work done by Miyaoka and others in the case of divisors and of curves, we compute the cones of effective cycles of arbitrary dimension on a projective bundle over a complex projective curve in terms of the numerical data in an associated Harder-Narasimhan filtration. An application to cycles on projective bundles over a smooth complex projective base of arbitrary dimension is also given.
We introduce the notion of a categorical cone, which provides a categorification of the classical cone over a projective variety, and use our work on categorical joins to describe its behavior under homological projective duality. In particular, our construction provides well-behaved categorical resolutions of singular quadrics, which we use to obtain an explicit quadratic version of the main theorem of homological projective duality. As applications, we prove the duality conjecture for Gushel-Mukai varieties, and produce interesting examples of conifold transitions between noncommutative and …
In this paper we present some applications of A'Campo-Lê's Theorem and we study some relations between Zariski's Questions A and B. It is presented some classes of homeomorphisms that preserve multiplicity and tangent cones of complex analytic sets. Moreover, we present a class of homeomorphisms that has the multiplicity as an invariant when we consider right equivalence and this class contains many known classes of homeomorphisms that preserve tangent cones. In particular, we present some effective approaches to Zariski's Question A. We show a version of these results looking at infinity. Add…
We find classes of projective manifolds that are elliptic in the sense of Gromov and such that the affine cones over these manifolds also are elliptic off their vertices. For example, the latter holds for any generalized flag manifold of dimension at least 3 successively blown up in a finite set of points and infinitesimally near points. This also holds for any smooth projective rational surface. For the affine cones, the Gromov ellipticity is a much weaker property than the flexibility. Nonetheless, it still implies the infinite transitivity of the action of the endomorphism monoid on these c…
In this paper, we study the divisor theory of the Simpson moduli space of semistable sheaves of dimension 1 on the projective plane. We prove that these spaces are all Mori dream spaces, and calculate their nef cones. We also study the effective cones of these spaces for most choices of numerical invariants. As a consequence, we work out precisely when two such spaces are isomorphic.
Let $X = \mathbb{P}(E_1) \times_C \mathbb{P}(E_2)$ where $C$ is a smooth curve and $E_1$, $E_2$ are vector bundles over $C$.In this paper we compute the pseudo effective cones of higher codimension cycles on $X$.
For a compact hyperkähler manifold X, we show certain Zariski decomposition for every pseudo-effective R-divisor, and give a sufficient condition for X to be bimeromorphic to a (holomorphic) Lagrangian fibration. We also prove that any sequence of D-flops between projective hyperkähler manifolds terminates after finite steps.
In this article, we give a description of the closed cone of curves of the projective bundle $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over a smooth projective variety $X$. Using duality, we then calculate the nef cone of divisors in $\mathbb{P}(E)$ over some special surfaces $X$ and for some special bundles on $X$. As an application, we also calculate the Seshadri constants of semistable ample vector bundles with vanishing discriminant on some special ruled surfaces at special points.
We prove that any surjective self-morphism with $δ_f > 1$ on a potentially dense smooth projective surface defined over a number field $K$ has densely many $L$-rational points for a finite extension $L/K$.
We study motivic Chern classes of cones. First we show examples of projective cones of smooth curves such that their various $K$-classes (sheaf theoretic, push-forward and motivic) are all different. Then we show connections between the torus equivariant motivic Chern class of a projective variety and of its affine cone, generalizing results on projective Thom polynomials.
We consider the potential density of rational points on an algebraic variety defined over a number field $K$, i.e., the property that the set of rational points of $X$ becomes Zariski dense after a finite field extension of $K$. For a non-uniruled projective variety with an int-amplified endomorphism, we show that it always satisfies potential density. When a rationally connected variety admits an int-amplified endomorphism, we prove that there exists some rational curve with a Zariski dense forward orbit, assuming the Zariski dense orbit conjecture in lower dimensions. As an application, we p…
Let $X$ be a smooth $n$-dimensional projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ such that $K_X$ is not nef. We give a characterization of non nef extremal rays of $X$ of maximal length (i.e of length $n-1$); in the case of $\ch(k) = 0$ we also characterize non nef rays of length $n-2$.
In this paper, we study the cones of higher codimension (pseudo)effective cycles on point blow-ups of projective space. We determine bounds on the number of points for which these cones are generated by the classes of linear cycles, and for which these cones are finitely generated. Surprisingly, we discover that for (very) general points, the higher codimension cones behave better than the cones of divisors. For example, for the blow-up $X_r^n$ of $\mathbb P^n$, $n>4$, at $r$ very general points, the cone of divisors is not finitely generated as soon as $r> n+3$, whereas the cone of curves is …
We give a relation between the existence of a Zariski decomposition and the behavior of the restricted volume of a big divisor on a smooth (complex) projective variety. Moreover, we give an analytic description of the restricted volume in the line of Boucksom's work. It enables us to define the restricted volume of a transcendental class on a compact Kähler manifold in natural way. The relation can be extended to a transcendental class.
Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve over $\mathbb C$. Let $n,d\geq 1$. Let $\mathcal Q$ be the Quot scheme parameterizing torsion quotients of the vector bundle $\mathcal O^n_C$ of degree $d$. In this article we study the nef cone of $\mathcal Q$. We give a complete description of the nef cone in the case of elliptic curves. We compute it in the case when $d=2$ and $C$ very general, in terms of the nef cone of the second symmetric product of $C$. In the case when $n\geq d$ and $C$ very general, we give upper and lower bounds for the Nef cone. In general, we give a necessary and sufficient cri…
We compute the cones of effective divisors on blowups of $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^2$ and $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^3$ in up to 6 points. We also show that all these varieties are log Fano, giving a conceptual explanation for the fact that all the cones we compute are rational polyhedral.
We study Calabi-Yau manifolds which are complete intersections of hypersurfaces of multidegree $1$ in an $m$-fold product of $n$-dimensional projective spaces. Using the theory of Coxeter groups, we show that the birational automorphism group of such a Calabi-Yau manifold $X$ is infinite and a free product of copies of $\mathbb{Z}$ . Moreover, we give an explicit description of the boundary of the movable cone $\overline{\operatorname{Mov}}(X)$. In the end, we consider examples for the general and non-general case and picture the movable cone and the fundamental domain for the action of $\oper…
