Let $X$ be a smooth $n$-dimensional projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ such that $K_X$ is not nef. We give a characterization of non nef extremal rays of $X$ of maximal length (i.e of length $n-1$); in the case of $\ch(k) = 0$ we also characterize non nef rays of length $n-2$.
In this paper we develop a technique for discovering (non-effective) irrational rays at the boundary of the Mori cone for linear systems on a general blowup of the plane, and give examples of such irrational rays.
We propose a generalization of SHGH Conjectures to a smooth projective surface Y: the so called Segre Problem. The study of linear systems on Y can be translated in terms of the Mori cone of the blow up $X = Bl_r Y$ at $r$ general points. Generalizing a result by de Fernex, we prove that if Segre Problem holds true, then a part of the Mori cone of $X$ does coincide with a part of the positive cone of $X$.
We determine the Mori cone of holomorphic symplectic varieties deformation equivalent to the punctual Hilbert scheme on a K3 surface. Our description is given in terms of Markman's extended Hodge lattice.
We use a family of algebraic foliations given by A. Lins Neto to provide new evidences to a conjecture, related to the Harbourne-Hirschowitz's one and implying the Nagata's conjecture, which concerns the structure of the Mori cone of blow-ups of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at very general points.
In this paper we prove that certain linear systems (and all their multiples) of plane curves with general base points and zero--self intersection are empty, thus exhibiting further examples of rays at the boundary of the Mori cone of a general blow--up of the plane.
The fundamental property of Fano varieties with mild singularities is that they have a finite polyhedral Mori cone. Thus, it is very interesting to ask: What we can say about algebraic varieties with a finite polyhedral Mori cone? I give a review of known results. All of them were obtained applying methods which were originated in the theory of discrete groups generated by reflections in hyperbolic spaces with a fundamental chamber of finite volume. This is my report on Fano conference in Torino, October 2002
We discuss some properties of the extremal rays of the cone of effective curves of surfaces that are obtained by blowing up the projective plane at points in very general position. The main motivation is to rectify an incorrect interpretation, in terms of the geometry of this cone, of the Segre--Harbourne--Gimigliano--Hirschowitz conjecture. Even though the arguments are based on elementary computations, the point of view leads to observe some other properties of the Mori cone, among which the fact that in the case of ten or more points the cone is not countably generated.
We prove that if $m \ge n-3$ then every $S_m$-invariant F-nef divisor on the moduli space of stable $n$-pointed curves of genus zero is linearly equivalent to an effective combination of boundary divisors. As an application, we determine the Mori cone of the moduli spaces of stable curves of small genus with few marked points.
The Kleiman-Mori cone plays important roles in the birational geometry. In this paper, we construct complete varieties whose Kleiman-Mori cones have interesting properties. First, we construct a simple and explicit example of complete non-projective singular varieties for which Kleiman's ampleness criterion does not hold. More precisely, we construct a complete non-projective toric variety $X$ and a line bundle $L$ on $X$ such that $L$ is positive on $\bar {NE}(X)\setminus \{0\}$. Next, we construct complete singular varieties $X$ with $NE(X)=N_1(X)\simeq \mathbb R^k$ for any $k$. These explic…
We discuss the cone theorem for quasi-log schemes and the Mori hyperbolicity. In particular, we establish that the log canonical divisor of a Mori hyperbolic projective normal pair is nef if it is nef when restricted to the non-lc locus. This answers Svaldi's question completely. We also treat the uniruledness of the degenerate locus of an extremal contraction morphism for quasi-log schemes. Furthermore, we prove that every fiber of a relative quasi-log Fano scheme is rationally chain connected modulo the non-qlc locus.
In this paper we prove that no multiple of the linear system of plane curves of degree $d\geq 4$ with a point of multiplicity $d-m$ (with $2 \leq m \leq d$) and $m(2d-m)$ simple general points is effective.
We compute the Mori cone of curves of the moduli space \M_{g,n} of stable n-pointed curves of genus g in the case when g and n are relatively small. For instance, we show that for g<14 every curve in \M_g is numerically equivalent to an effective sum of 1-strata (loci of curves with 3g-4 nodes). We also prove that the nef cone of \M_{0,6} is composed of 11 natural subcones all contained in the convex hull of boundary classes. We apply this result to classify the fibrations of the moduli space of rational curves with n<7 marked points.
We investigate nef and movable cones of hypersurfaces in Mori dream spaces. The first result is: Let $Z$ be a smooth Mori dream space of dimension at least four whose extremal contractions are of fiber type of relative dimension at least two and let $X$ be a smooth ample divisor in $Z$, then $X$ is a Mori dream space as well. The second result is: Let $Z$ be a Fano manifold of dimension at least four whose extremal contractions are of fiber type and let $X$ be a smooth anti-canonical hypersurface in $Z$, which is a smooth Calabi--Yau variety, then the unique minimal model of $X$ up to isomorph…
A Bott tower of height $r$ is a sequence of projective bundles $$X_r \overset{π_r}\longrightarrow X_{r-1} \overset{π_{r-1}}\longrightarrow \cdots \overset{π_2}\longrightarrow X_1=\mathbb P^1 \overset{π_1} \longrightarrow X_0=\{pt\}, $$ where $X_i=\mathbb P (\mathcal O_{X_{i-1}}\oplus \mathcal L_{i-1})$ for a line bundle $\mathcal L_{i-1}$ over $X_{i-1}$ for all $1\leq i\leq r$ and $\mathbb P(-)$ denotes the projectivization. These are smooth projective toric varieties and we refer to the top object $X_{r}$ also as a Bott tower. In this article, we study the Mori cone and numerically effective …
The main goal of this paper is to study varieties with the best possible Mori theoretic properties (measured by the existence of a certain decomposition of the cone of effective divisors). We call such a variety a Mori Dream Space. There turn out to be many examples, including quasi-smooth projective toric (or more generally, spherical) varieties, many GIT quotients, and log Fano 3-folds. We characterize Mori dream spaces as GIT quotients of affine varieties by a torus in a manner generalizing Cox's construction of toric varieties as quotients of affine space. Via the quotient description, the…
In the present paper we prove that, on a hyperkähler manifold, walls of the kähler cone and extremal rays of the Mori cone are determined by all divisors satisfying certain numerical conditions.
In this paper we study effective, nef and semiample cones of minimal surfaces of general type with $p_g=0.$ We provide examples of minimal surfaces of general type with $p_g=0, 2 \leq K^2 \leq 9$ which are Mori dream spaces. On these examples we also give explicit description of effective cones and all irreducible reduced curves of negative self-intersection. We also present non-minimal surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ that are not Mori dream surfaces.
We prove the following results for projective klt pairs of dimension $3$ over an algebraically closed field of char $p>5$: the cone theorem, the base point free theorem, the contraction theorem, finiteness of minimal models, termination with scaling, existence of Mori fibre spaces, etc.
We denote by FPMC the class of all non-singular projective algebraic surfaces X over C with a finite polyhedral Mori cone NE(X)\subset NS(X)\otimes R. If rho(X)=rk NS(X)\ge 3, then the set Exc(X) of all exceptional curves on X\in FPMC is finite and generates NE(X). Let δ_E(X) be the maximum of (-E^2) and p_E(X) the maximum of p_a(E) respectively for E\in Exc(X). For fixed ρ\ge 3, δ_E and p_E we denote by FPMC_{ρ,δ_E,p_E} the class of all X\in FPMC such that ρ(X)=ρ, δ_E(X)=δ_E and p_E(X)=p_E. We prove that the class FPMC_{ρ,δ_E,p_E} is bounded: for any X\in FPMC_{ρ,δ_E,p_E} there exist an ample…
Given a smooth Mori dream space $X$ we construct a model dominating all the small $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial modifications via tropicalization. This construction allows us to recover a Minkowski basis for the Newton-Okounkov bodies of divisors on $X$ and hence the movable cone of $X$. The existence of such basis allows us to prove the polyhedrality of the global Newton-Okounkov body and the existence of toric degenerations.
Let $H_{a,b}^n$ denote the component of the Hilbert scheme whose general point parameterizes an $a$-plane union a $b$-plane meeting transversely in $\mathbf{P}^n$. We describe the effective and nef cones of $H_{a,b}^n$ and determine when the component is Fano. Moreover, we show that $H_{a,b}^n$ is a Mori dream space for all values of $a,b,n$.
It is known that ambient bilipschitz equivalence preserves tangent cones. This paper explores the behavior of the Nash cone and, in particular, exceptional rays under ambient bilipschitz equivalence for real surfaces in $R^3$ with isolated singularity.
We give new estimates of lengths of extremal rays of birational type for toric varieties. We can see that our new estimates are the best by constructing some examples explicitly. As applications, we discuss the nefness and pseudo-effectivity of adjoint bundles of projective toric varieties. We also treat some generalizations of Fujita's freeness and very ampleness for toric varieties.
In this paper, we study the divisor theory of the Simpson moduli space of semistable sheaves of dimension 1 on the projective plane. We prove that these spaces are all Mori dream spaces, and calculate their nef cones. We also study the effective cones of these spaces for most choices of numerical invariants. As a consequence, we work out precisely when two such spaces are isomorphic.
In this short note we show that the closed cone of moving curves of a smooth Fano-threefold is polyhedral. The proof relies on a famous result of Bucksom, Demailly, Paun and Peternell which says that the strongly movable cone is dual to the cone of pseudoeffective divisors. Finally, we relate the extremal rays of the cone of moving curves on a threefold with extremal rays in the cone of strongly movable curves on a birational model obtained by a Mori contraction.
Let X be a smooth Mori dream space of dimension at least 4. We show that, if X satisfies a suitable GIT condition which we call "small unstable locus", then every smooth ample divisor Y of X is also a Mori dream space. Moreover, the restriction map identifies the Neron-Severi spaces of X and Y, and under this identification every Mori chamber of Y is a union of some Mori chambers of X, and the nef cone of Y is the same as the nef cone of X. This Lefschetz-type theorem enables one to construct many examples of Mori dream spaces by taking "Mori dream hypersurfaces" of an ambient Mori dream space…
The nef cone of a projective variety Y is an important and often elusive invariant. In this paper we construct two polyhedral lower bounds and one polyhedral upper bound for the nef cone of Y using an embedding of Y into a toric variety. The lower bounds generalize the combinatorial description of the nef cone of a Mori dream space, while the upper bound generalizes the F-conjecture for the nef cone of the moduli space \bar{M}_{0,n} to a wide class of varieties.
We prove that on a Bott-Samelson variety $X$ every movable divisor is nef. This enables us to consider Zariski decompositions of effective divisors, which in turn yields a description of the Mori chamber decomposition of the effective cone. This amounts to information on all possible birational morphisms from $X$. Applying this result, we prove the rational polyhedrality of the global Newton-Okounkov body of a Bott-Samelson variety with respect to the so called `horizontal' flag. In fact, we prove the stronger property of the finite generation of the corresponding global value semigroup.
We examine the extremal rays of the cone of dominant weights $(μ, \widehatμ)$ for groups $G\subseteq \widehat G$ for which there exists $N \gg0$ such that $$ \left(V(Nμ)\otimes V(N\widehat μ)\right)^G\ne (0). $$ We exhibit formulas for a class of rays ("type I") on any regular face of the cone. These rays are identified thanks to a generalization of Fulton's conjecture, which we prove along the way. We verify that the remaining rays ("type II") on the face are the images of extremal rays for a smaller cone under a certain map, whose formula is given. A procedure is given for finding the rays o…

We develop some basic results in a higher dimensional foliated Mori theory, and show how these results can be used to prove a structure theorem for the Kleiman-Mori cone of curves in terms of the numerical properties of $K_{\mathcal{F}}$ for rank 2 foliations on threefolds. We also make progress toward realizing a minimal model program for rank 2 foliations on threefolds.
Let X be a projective variety with terminal singularities and let L be an ample Cartier divisor on X. We prove that if f is a birational contraction associated to an extremal ray $ R \subset \bar {NE(X)}$ such that R.(K_X+(n-2)L)<0, then f is a weighted blow-up of a smooth point. We then classify divisorial contractions associated to extremal rays R such that R.(K_X+rL)<0, where r is a non-negative rational number, and the fibres of f have dimension less or equal to r+1.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety and let $H \in \pic(X)$ be an ample line bundle. Assume that $X$ is covered by rational curves with degree one with respect to $H$ and with anticanonical degree greater than or equal to $(\dim X -1)/2$. We prove that there is a covering family of such curves whose numerical class spans an extremal ray in the cone of curves $\cone(X)$.
We survey recent results on ample cones and birational contractions of holomorphic symplectic varieties of K3 type, focusing on explicit constructions and concrete examples.
We study the birational properties of hypersurfaces in products of projective spaces. In the case of hypersurfaces in P^m x P^n, we describe their nef, movable and effective cones and determine when they are Mori dream spaces. Using these results, we give new simple examples of non-Mori dream spaces and analogues of Mumford's example of a strictly nef line bundle which is not ample.
This work is concerned with the study of the extreme rays of the convex cone of $3\times 3$ quasiconvex quadratic forms (denoted by ${\cal C}_3$). We characterize quadratic forms $f\in {\cal C}_3,$ the determinant of the acoustic tensor of which is an extremal polynomial, and conjecture/discuss about other cases. We prove that in the case when the determinant of the acoustic tensor of a form $f\in {\cal C}_3$ is an extremal polynomial other than a perfect square, then the form must itself be an extreme ray of ${\cal C}_3;$ when the determinant is a perfect square, then the form is either an ex…
In this paper, we study the cones of higher codimension (pseudo)effective cycles on point blow-ups of projective space. We determine bounds on the number of points for which these cones are generated by the classes of linear cycles, and for which these cones are finitely generated. Surprisingly, we discover that for (very) general points, the higher codimension cones behave better than the cones of divisors. For example, for the blow-up $X_r^n$ of $\mathbb P^n$, $n>4$, at $r$ very general points, the cone of divisors is not finitely generated as soon as $r> n+3$, whereas the cone of curves is …
Let $ξ$ be a stable Chern character on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, and let $M(ξ)$ be the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves on $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$ with Chern character $ξ$. In this paper, we provide an approach to computing the effective cone of $M(ξ)$ after showing that it is a Mori dream space for all $ξ$. We find Brill-Noether divisors spanning extremal rays of the effective cone using resolutions of the general elements of $M(ξ)$ which are found using the machinery of exceptional bundles. We use this approach to provide many examples of extremal rays in thes…
We consider the cones of curves and divisors on the moduli space of stable pointed rational curves,M_n, and on the quotient by the symmetric group, Q_n, which is a moduli space of pairs. We find generators for contractible extremal rays of the cone of curves NE_1(M_n), and for the cone of divisors NE^1(Q_n). This second cone turns out to be simplicial. We give complete descriptions of NE_1(M_n) and NE_1(Q_n) for small n (< 8 in the first case, < 11 in the second). We also have results of independent interest on when curves in a divisor generate the cone of curves of the ambient variety.
We study the birational geometry of the moduli space of complete $n$-quadrics $X$. We exhibit generators for Eff$(X)$ and Nef$(X)$, the cone of effective divisors and the cone of nef divisors, respectively. As a corollary X is a Mori Dream space. Furthermore, we run the MMP on $X$ and find a moduli interpretation for the models induced by the generators of the nef cone. In the case of complete quadric surfaces, we describe all the birational models of $X$ induced by the movable cone and find a moduli interpretation for some of these models.
Nagata solved Hilbert's 14-th problem in 1958 in the negative. The solution naturally lead him to a tantalizing conjecture that remains widely open after more than half a century of intense efforts. Using Nagata's theorem as starting point, and the conjecture, with its multiple variations, as motivation, we explore the important questions of finite generation for invariant rings, for support semigroups of multigraded algebras, and for Mori cones of divisors on blown up surfaces, and the rationality of Waldschimdt constants. Finally we suggest a connection between the Mori cone of the Zariski-R…
In this paper we construct a degeneration of Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties to toric varieties in an algebraic family and study the geometry of the resulting toric varieties. We give a natural set of torus invariant curves that generate the Chow group of $1$-cycles of the limiting toric variety and express the ample cone of this toric variety as a sub-cone of the ample cone of the corresponding Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety. We also give a description of Extremal and Mori rays and determine when this toric variety is Fano.
Let $X$ be an orthogonal Shimura variety associated to a unimodular lattice. We investigate the polyhedrality of the cone $\mathcal{C}_X$ of special cycles of codimension 2 on $X$. We show that the rays generated by such cycles accumulate towards infinitely many rays, the latter generating a non-trivial cone. We also prove that such an accumulation cone is polyhedral. The proof relies on analogous properties satisfied by the cones of Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms. We show that the accumulation rays of $\mathcal{C}_X$ are generated by combinations of Heegner divisors intersected …
Ternary sextics and quaternary quartics are the smallest cases where there exist nonnegative polynomials that are not sums of squares (SOS). A complete classification of the difference between these cones was given by G. Blekherman via analyzing the extreme rays of the corresponding dual cones. However, an exact computational approach in order to build separating extreme rays for nonnegative polynomials that are not sums of squares is a widely open problem. We provide a method substantially simplifying this computation for certain classes of polynomials on the boundary of the PSD cones. In par…
Following ideas of V. Batyrev, we prove an analogue of the Cone Theorem for the closed cone of nef curves: an enlargement of the cone of nef curves is the closure of the sum of a K_X-non-negative portion and countably many K_X-negative coextremal rays. An example shows that this enlargement is necessary. We also describe the relationship between K_X-negative faces of this cone and the possible outcomes of the minimal model program.
