We explain the bundle structures of the {\it Determinant line bundle} and the {\it Quillen determinant line bundle} considered on the connected component of the space of Fredholm operators including the identity operator in an intrinsic way. Then we show that these two are isomorphic and that they are non-trivial line bundles and trivial on some subspaces. Also we remark a relation of the {\it Quillen determinant line bundle} and the {\it Maslov line bundle}.
We compute the relative zeta-function metric on the determinant line bundle for a family of elliptic boundary value problems of Dirac-type. To do this we prove a general formula relating the zeta-determinant to a Fredholm determinant over the boundary for a class of higher-order elliptic boundary value problems.
In this paper we prequantize the moduli space of non-abelian vortices. We explicitly calculate the symplectic form arising from the $L^2$ metric and we construct a prequantum line bundle whose curvature is proportional to this symplectic form. The prequantum line bundle turns out to be Quillen's determinant line bundle with a modified Quillen metric. Next, as in the case of abelian vortices, we construct Quillen line bundles over the moduli space whose curvatures form a family of symplectic forms which are parametrised by $Ψ_0$, a section of a certain bundle.
Let $M$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective variety equipped with an action of a compact Lie group $G$, and let $({\mathcal L},h)$ be a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, we construct a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle $(L\,,H)$ on $X\times M$ (the action of $G$ on $X$ is trivial), such that the corresponding Quillen determinant line bundle $({\mathcal Q}, h_Q)$, which is a $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$, is isomorphic to the given $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian lin…
We show that any compact Kahler manifold with integral Kahler form, parametrizes a natural holomorphic family of Cauchy-Riemann operators on the Riemann sphere such that the Quillen determinant line bundle of this family is isomorphic to a sufficiently high tensor power of the holomorphic line bundle determined by the integral Kahler form. We also establish a symplectic version of the result. We conjecture that an equivariant version of our result is true.
We show the existence of a symplectic structure on the moduli space of the Seiberg-Witten equations on $Σ\times Σ$ where $Σ$ is a compact oriented Riemann surface. To prequantize the moduli space, we construct a Quillen-type determinant line bundle on it and show its curvature is proportional to the symplectic form.
The Quillen connection on ${\mathcal L} \rightarrow {\mathcal M}_g$, where ${\mathcal L}^*$ is the Hodge line bundle over the moduli stack of smooth complex projective curves curves ${\mathcal M}_g$, $g \geq 5$, is uniquely determined by the condition that its curvature is the Weil--Petersson form on ${\mathcal M}_g$. The bundle of holomorphic connections on ${\mathcal L}$ has a unique holomorphic isomorphism with the bundle on ${\mathcal M}_g$ given by the moduli stack of projective structures. This isomorphism takes the $C^\infty$ section of the first bundle given by the Quillen connection o…
Given a supervector bundle $E = E_0\oplus E_1 \to M$, we exhibit a parametrization of Quillen superconnections on $E$ by graded connections on the Cartan-Koszul supermanifold $(M;Ω(M))$. The relation between the curvatures of both kind of connections, and their associated Chern classes, is discussed in detail. In particular, we find that Chern classes for graded vector bundles on split supermanifolds can be computed through the associated Quillen superconnections.
We investigate the symplectic geometric and differential geometric aspects of the moduli space of connections on a compact Riemann surface $X$. Fix a theta characteristic $K^{1/2}_X$ on $X$; it defines a theta divisor on the moduli space ${\mathcal M}$ of stable vector bundles on $X$ of rank $r$ degree zero. Given a vector bundle $E \in {\mathcal M}$ lying outside the theta divisor, we construct a natural holomorphic connection on $E$ that depends holomorphically on $E$. Using this holomorphic connection, we construct a canonical holomorphic isomorphism between the following two: \begin{enumer…
We show that there is a canonical construction of a zeta (Bismut-Quillen) connection on the determinant line bundle of a family of APS elliptic boundary problems and that it has curvature equal to the 2-form part of a relative eta form.
This paper is about geometric quantization of the Hitchin system. We quantize a Kahler form on the Hitchin moduli space (which is half the first Kahler form defined by Hitchin) by considering the Quillen bundle as the prequantum line bundle and modifying the Quillen metric using the Higgs field so that the curvature is proportional to the Kahler form. We show that this Kahler form is integral and the Quillen bundle descends as a prequantum line bundle on the moduli space. It is holomorphic and hence one can take holomorphic square integrable sections as the Hilbert space of quantization of the…
Let $X\rightarrow S$ be a smooth projective surjective morphism of relative dimension $n$, where $X$ and $S$ are integral schemes over $\mathbb C$. Let $L\rightarrow X$ be a relatively very ample line bundle. For every sufficiently large positive integer $m$, there is a canonical isomorphism of the Deligne pairing $\langle L ,\cdots , L\rangle\rightarrow S$ with the determinant line bundle ${\rm Det}((L- {\mathcal O}_{X})^{\otimes (n+1)}\otimes L^{\otimes m})$ \cite{PRS}. If we fix a hermitian structure on $L$ and a relative Kähler form on $X$, then each of the line bundles ${\rm Det}((L- {\ma…
We consider degenerations of complex projective Calabi--Yau varieties and study the singularities of $L^2$, Quillen and BCOV metrics on Hodge and determinant bundles. The dominant and subdominant terms in the expansions of the metrics close to non-smooth fibers are shown to be related to well-known topological invariants of singularities, such as limit Hodge structures, vanishing cycles and log-canonical thresholds. We also describe corresponding invariants for more general degenerating families in the case of the Quillen metric.
For a Riemann surface $X$ and the moduli of regularly stable $G$-bundles $M$, there is a naturally occuring "$adjoint$" vector bundle over $X \times M$. One can take the determinant of this vector bundle with respect to the projection map onto $M$. Our aim here is to study the curvature of the determinant bundle as the conformal structure on $X$ varies over the Teichmüller space.
In \cite{BR1}, \cite{BR2}, a parabolic determinant line bundle on a moduli space of stable parabolic bundles was constructed, along with a Hermitian structure on it. The construction of the Hermitian structure was indirect: The parabolic determinant line bundle was identified with the pullback of the determinant line bundle on a moduli space of usual vector bundles over a covering curve. The Hermitian structure on the parabolic determinant bundle was taken to be the pullback of the Quillen metric on the determinant line bundle on the moduli space of usual vector bundles. Here a direct construc…
In this note we specialize and illustrate the ideas developed in the paper math.DG/0201112 of the first author ("Index theory, eta forms, and Deligne cohomology ") in the case of the determinant line bundle. We discuss the surgery formula in the adiabatic limit using the adiabatic decomposition formula of the zeta regularized determinant of the Dirac Laplacian obtained by the second author and K. Wojciechowski.
We provide a thorough construction of a system of compatible determinant line bundles over spaces of Fredholm operators, fully verify that this system satisfies a number of important properties, and include explicit formulas for all relevant isomorphisms between these line bundles. We also completely describe all possible systems of compatible determinant line bundles and compare the conventions and approaches used elsewhere in the literature.
We study the geometry of determinant line bundles associated to Dirac operators on compact odd dimensional manifolds. Physically, these arise as (local) vacuum line bundles in quantum gauge theory. We give a simplified derivation of the commutator anomaly formula using a construction based on noncyclic trace extensions and associated multiplicative renormalized determinants.
It is shown that the determinant line bundle associated to a family of Dirac operators over a closed partitioned manifold has a canonical Hermitian metric with compatible connection whose curvature satisfies an additivity formula with contributions from the families of Dirac operators over the two halves. This curvature form is the natural differential representative which satisifies the same splitting principle as the Chern class of the determinant line bundle.
This expository monograph cuts a short path from the common, elementary background in geometry (linear algebra, vector bundles, and algebraic ideals) to the most advanced theorems about involutive exterior differential systems: (1) The incidence correspondence of the characteristic variety, (2) Guillemin normal form and Quillen's thesis, (3) The Integrability of Characteristics by Guillemin, Quillen, Sternberg, and Gabber, and (4) Yang's Hyperbolicity Criterion. To do so, the geometric theory of PDEs is reinterpreted as the study of smooth sub-bundles of the Grassmann bundle, whereby the rank-…
Let $X \rightarrow S$ be a smooth projective surjective morphism, where $X$ and $S$ are integral schemes over complex numbers. Let L_0, L_1, .... L_{n-1}, L_{n} be line bundles over $X$. There is a natural isomorphism of the Deligne pairing $<L_{0},...,L_{n}>$ with the determinant line bundle ${\rm Det}(\otimes_{i=0}^{n} (L_i- {\mathcal O}_{X}))$.
Cobordism invariance shows that the index, in K-theory, of a family of pseudodifferential operators on the boundary of a fibration vanishes if the symbol family extends to be elliptic across the whole fibration. For Dirac operators with spectral boundary condition, Dai and Freed \cite{dai-freed1} gave an explicit version of this at the level of the determinant bundle. Their result, that the eta invariant of the interior family trivializes the determinant bundle of the boundary family, is extended here to the wider context of pseudodifferential families of cusp type.
The Chern character of a complex vector bundle is most conveniently defined as the exponential of a curvature of a connection. It is well known that its cohomology class does not depend on the particular connection chosen. It has been shown by Quillen that a connection may be perturbed by an endomorphism of the vector bundle, such as a symbol of some elliptic differential operator. This point of view, as we intend to show, allows one to relate Chern character to a non-commutative sibling formulated by Connes and Moscovici. The general setup for our problem is purely geometric. Let σbe the symb…
Using properties of the determinant line bundle for a family of elliptic boundary value problems, we explain how the Fock space functor defines an axiomatic quantum field theory which formally models the Fermionic path integral. The 'sewing axiom' of the theory arises as an algebraic pasting law for the determinant of the Dirac operator. We show how representations of the boundary gauge group fit into this description and that this leads to a Fock functor description of certain gauge anomalies.
We compute the curvature of the determinant line bundle on a family of Dirac operators for a noncommutative two torus. Following Quillen's original construction for Riemann surfaces and using zeta regularized determinant of Laplacians, one can endow the determinant line bundle with a natural Hermitian metric. By using an analogue of Kontsevich-Vishik canonical trace, defined on Connes' algebra of classical pseudodifferential symbols for the noncommutative two torus, we compute the curvature form of the determinant line bundle by computing the second variation $δ_{w}δ_{\bar{w}}\log\det(Δ)$.
In this paper, we extend Deligne's functorial Riemann-Roch isomorphism for hermitian holomorphic line bundles on Riemann surfaces to the case of flat, not necessarily unitary connections. The Quillen metric and star-product of Gillet-Soule are replaced with complex valued logarithms. On the determinant of cohomology side, the idea goes back to Fay's holomorphic extension of determinants of Dolbeault laplacians, and it is shown here to be equivalent to the holomorphic Cappell-Miller torsion. On the Deligne pairing side, the logarithm is a refinement of the intersection connections considered in…
Given a smooth family of massless free fermions parametrized by a base manifold $B$, we show that the (mathematically rigorous) Batalin-Vilkovisky quantization of the observables of this family gives rise to the determinant line bundle for the corresponding family of Dirac operators.
The infinite matrix `Schwartz' group $G^{-\infty}$ is a classifying group for odd K-theory and carries Chern classes in each odd dimension, generating the cohomology. These classes are closely related to the Fredholm determinant on $G^{-\infty}.$ We show that while the higher (even, Schwartz) loop groups of $G^{-\infty},$ again classifying for odd K-theory, do \emph{not} carry multiplicative determinants generating the first Chern class, `dressed' extensions, corresponding to a star product, do carry such functions. We use these to discuss Bott periodicity for the determinant bundle and the et…
The Quillen-Bismut-Freed construction associates a determinant line bundle with connection to an infinite dimensional super vector bundle with a family of Dirac-type operators. We define the regularized first Chern form of the infinite dimensional bundle, and relate it to the curvature of the Bismut-Freed connection on the determinant bundle. In finite dimensions, these forms agree (up to sign), but in infinite dimensions there is a correction term, which we express in terms of Wodzicki residues. We illustrate these results with a string theory computation. There is a natural super vector bund…
This article is an expanded version of the talk given by Ch. O. at the Second Latin Congress on "Symmetries in Geometry and Physics" in Curitiba, Brazil in December 2010. In this version we explain the topological and gauge-theoretical aspects of our paper "Abelian Yang-Mills theory on Real tori and Theta divisors of Klein surfaces".
This is a note for the conference proceedings Topological and Geometrical Problems related to Quantum Field Theory. We summarize our joint work with Dai about eta invariants on manifolds with boundary. Then we apply these results to prove the curvature and holonomy formulas for the natural connection on the determinant line bundle of a family of Dirac operators. These were originally proved by Bismut and the author--the proofs here are much simpler.
In the first part of this paper, given a smooth family of Dirac-type operators on an odd-dimensional closed manifold, we construct an abelian gerbe-with-connection whose curvature is the three-form component of the Atiyah-Singer families index theorem. In the second part of the paper, given a smooth family of Dirac-type operators whose index lies in the i-th filtration of the reduced K-theory of the parametrizing space, we construct a set of Deligne cohomology class of degree i whose curvatures are the i-form component of the Atiyah-Singer families index theorem.
The set of Clifford bundles of bounded geometry over open manifolds can be endowed with a metrizable uniform structure. For one fixed bundle $E$ we define the generalized component $\gencomp (E)$ as the set of Clifford bundles $E'$ which have finite distance to $E$. If $D$, $D'$ are the associated generalized Dirac operators, we prove for the pair $(D,D')$ relative index theorems, define relative $ζ$-- and $η$--functions, relative determinants and in the case of $D=Δ$ relative analytic torsion. To define relative $ζ$-- and $η$--functions, we assume additionally that the essential spectrum of $…
In this article we study the Quillen norm on the determinant line bundle associated with a family of complex curves with cusps, which admit singular fibers. More precisely, we fix a family of complex curves $π: X \to S$, which admit at most double-point singularities. Let $(ξ, h^ξ)$ be a holomorphic Hermitian vector bundle over $X$. Let $σ_1, \ldots, σ_m : S \to X$ be disjoint holomorphic sections. We denote the divisor $D_{X/S} := \rm{Im}(σ_1) + \cdots + \rm{Im}(σ_m)$, and endow the relative canonical line bundle $ω_{X/S}$ with a Hermitian norm such that its restriction at each fiber of $π$ i…
We prove sharp inequalities for determinants of Toeplitz operators and twisted Laplace operators on the two-sphere, generalizing the Moser-Trudinger-Onofri inequality. In particular a sharp version of conjectures of Gillet-Soule and Fang motivated by Arakelov geometry is obtained; applications to SU(2)-invariant determinantal random point processes on the two-sphere are also discussed. The inequalities are obtained as corollaries of a general theorem about the maximizers of a certain non-local functional defined on the space of all positively curved Hermitian metrics on an ample line bundle ov…
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$ equipped with flat conical metric $|Ω|$, where $Ω$ be a holomorphic quadratic differential on $X$ with $4g-4$ simple zeroes. Let $K$ be the canonical line bundle on $X$. Introduce the Cauchy-Riemann operators $\bar \partial$ and $\partial$ acting on sections of holomorphic line bundles over $X$ ($K^2$ in the definition of $Δ^{(2)}_{|Ω|}$ below) and, respectively, anti-holomorphic line bundles ($\bar { K}^{-1}$ below). Consider the Laplace operator $Δ^{(2)}_{|Ω|}:=|Ω| \partial |Ω|^{-2}\bar\partial$ acting in the Hilbert space of square int…
In their study of the representation theory of loop groups, Pressley and Segal introduced a determinant line bundle over an infinite dimensional Grassmann manifold. Mickelsson and Rajeev subsequently generalized the work of Pressley and Segal and in the process introduced for any p >=1 another infinite dimensional Grassmann manifold and a determinant line bundle defined over it. The construction of this determinant line bundle required the notion of a regularized determinant for bounded operators. In this note we specialize to the case p =2 and construct explicitly a connection on the correspo…
Let $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle on a compact Kähler manifold $X$. If we fix a metric $h$ on $E$, we get a Laplace operator $Δ$ acting upon smooth sections of $E$ over $X$. Using the zeta function of $Δ$, one defines its regularized determinant $det'(Δ)$. We conjectured elsewhere that, when $h$ varies, this determinant $det'(Δ)$ remains bounded from above. In this paper we prove this in two special cases. The first case is when $X$ is a Riemann surface, $E$ is a line bundle and $dim(H^0 (X,E)) + dim(H^1 (X,E)) \leq 2$, and the second case is when $X$ is the projective line, $E$ is a line…
This article deals with two topics: the first, which has a general character, is a variation formula for the the determinant line bundle in non-Kählerian geometry. This formula, which is a consequence of the non-Kählerian version of the Grothendieck-Riemann Roch theorem proved recently by Bismut, gives the variation of the determinant line bundle corresponding to a perturbation of a Fourier-Mukai kernel ${\cal E}$ on a product $B\times X$ by a unitary flat line bundle on the fiber $X$. When this fiber is a complex surface and ${\cal E}$ is a holomorphic 2-bundle, the result can be interpreted …
We introduce and study a canonical quadratic form, called the torsion quadratic form, of the determinant line of a flat vector bundle over a closed oriented odd-dimensional manifold. This quadratic form caries less information than the refined analytic torsion, introduced in our previous work, but is easier to construct and closer related to the combinatorial Farber-Turaev torsion. In fact, the torsion quadratic form can be viewed as an analytic analogue of the Poincare-Reidemeister scalar product, introduced by Farber and Turaev. Moreover, it is also closely related to the complex analytic to…
Recently, for a family of ungraded Dirac operators over some space $B$ J. Lott constructed an index gerbe. In the present paper we show (in analogy to the holonomy formula for the determinant bundle in the graded case) that the holonomy of the index gerbe (a priori a hermitean line bundle with connection over the free loop space $LB$) coincides with an adiabatic limit of determinant bundles of an associated family of graded Dirac operators over $LB$.
In an earlier paper [Acta Mathematica, v. 176, 1996, 145-169, alg-geom/9505024 ] the present authors and Dennis Sullivan constructed the universal direct system of the classical Teichmüller spaces of Riemann surfaces of varying genus. The direct limit, which we called the universal commensurability Teichmüller space, $T_{infty}$, was shown to carry on it a natural action of the universal commensurability mapping class group, $MC_{\infty}$. In this paper we identify an interesting cofinal sub-system corresponding to the tower of finite-sheeted characteristic coverings over any fixed base surfac…
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold. We extend the notion of Quillen metric to the set of integrable line bundles on $X$. In particular, we prove that the notion of holomorphic analytic torsion extends to integrable line bundles $\bar{L}$, such that $H^q(X,L)=0$ for $q\geq 1$.
For moduli space of stable parabolic bundles on a compact Riemann surface, we derive an explicit formula for the curvature of its canonical line bundle with respect to Quillen's metric and interpret it as a local index theorem for the family of dbar-operators in associated parabolic endomorphism bundles. The formula consists of two terms: one standard (proportional to the canonical Kaehler form on the moduli space), and one nonstandard, called a cuspidal defect, that is defined by means of special values of the Eisenstein-Maass series. The cuspidal defect is explicitly expressed through curvat…
The Seiberg-Witten family of elliptic curves defines a Jacobian rational elliptic surface $\Z$ over $\mathbb{C}\mathrm{P}^1$. We show that for the $\bar{\partial}$-operator along the fiber the logarithm of the regularized determinant $-1/2 \log \det' (\bar\partial^* \bar\partial)$ satisfies the anomaly equation of the one-loop topological string amplitude derived in Kodaira-Spencer theory. We also show that not only the determinant line bundle with the Quillen metric but also the $\bar{\partial}$-operator itself extends across the nodal fibers of $\mathrm{Z}$. The extension introduces current …
A sequence of point configurations on a compact complex manifold is asymptotically Fekete if it is close to maximizing a sequence of Vandermonde determinants. These Vandermonde determinants are defined by tensor powers of a Hermitian ample line bundle and the point configurations in the sequence possess good sampling properties with respect to sections of the line bundle. In this paper, given a collection of toric Hermitian ample line bundles, we give necessary and sufficient condition for existence of a sequence of point configurations which is asymptotically Fekete (and hence possess good sa…
Quillen proved that repeated multiplication of the standard sesquilinear form to a positive Hermitian bihomogeneous polynomial eventually results in a sum of Hermitian squares, which was the first Hermitian analogue of Hilbert's seventeenth problem in the nondegenerate case. Later Catlin-D'Angelo generalized this positivstellensatz of Quillen to the case of Hermitian algebraic functions on holomorphic line bundles over compact complex manifolds by proving the eventual positivity of an associated integral operator. The arguments of Catlin-D'Angelo, as well as that of a subsequent refinement by …
In this paper we first show that on projective manifolds (M, ω), there are holomorphic determinant bundles (in the sense of Knusden-Mumford used by Bismut, Gillet, Soule) which play the role of the geometric quantum bundle, namely one for each input data of a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle L of non-trivial Chern class on a compact Kahler manifold Z (with Todd genus non-zero) and a choice of a geometric quantization of (M, ω). Next we further study the generalization of the vortex equations on Kahler 4-manifold which has been studied earlier by Bradlow. We show that when the Kahler 4-manifol…
Given a holomorphic Hilbertian bundle on a compact complex manifold, we introduce the notion of holomorphic $L^2$ torsion, which lies in the determinant line of the twisted $L^2$ Dolbeault cohomology and represents a volume element there. Here we utilise the theory of determinant lines of Hilbertian modules over finite von Neumann algebras as developed in an earlier paper by the authors. This specialises to the Ray-Singer-Quillen holomorphic torsion in the finite dimensional case. We compute a metric variation formula for the holomorphic $L^2$ torsion, which shows that it is not in general ind…
The purpose of this paper is to compute determinant index bundles of certain families of Real Dirac type operators on Klein surfaces as elements in the corresponding Grothendieck group of Real line bundles in the sense of Atiyah. On a Klein surface these determinant index bundles have a natural holomorphic description as theta line bundles. In particular we compute the first Stiefel-Whitney classes of the corresponding fixed point bundles on the real part of the Picard torus. The computation of these classes is important, because they control to a large extent the orientability of certain modu…
