Recently, for a family of ungraded Dirac operators over some space $B$ J. Lott constructed an index gerbe. In the present paper we show (in analogy to the holonomy formula for the determinant bundle in the graded case) that the holonomy of the index gerbe (a priori a hermitean line bundle with connection over the free loop space $LB$) coincides with an adiabatic limit of determinant bundles of an associated family of graded Dirac operators over $LB$.
We show that the category of abelian gerbes over a smooth manifold is equivalent to a certain category of principal bundles over the free loop space. These principal bundles are equipped with fusion products and are equivariant with respect to thin homotopies between loops. The equivalence is established by a functor called regression, and complements a similar equivalence for bundles and gerbes equipped with connections, derived previously in Part II of this series of papers. The two equivalences provide a complete loop space formulation of the geometry of gerbes; functorial, monoidal, natura…
We discuss various lifting and reduction problems for bundles and gerbes in the context of a strict Lie 2-group. We obtain a geometrical formulation (and a new proof) for the exactness of Breen's long exact sequence in non-abelian cohomology. We use our geometrical formulation in order to define a transgression map in non-abelian cohomology. This transgression map relates the degree one non-abelian cohomology of a smooth manifold (represented by non-abelian gerbes) with the degree zero non-abelian cohomology of the free loop space (represented by principal bundles). We prove several properties…
We prove that the category of abelian gerbes with connection over a smooth manifold is equivalent to a certain category of principal bundles over the free loop space. These bundles are equipped with a connection and with a "fusion" product with respect to triples of paths. The equivalence is established by explicit functors in both directions: transgression and regression. We describe applications to geometric lifting problems and loop group extensions.
In this note we present a new construction of the string group that ends optionally in two different contexts: strict diffeological 2-groups or finite-dimensional Lie 2-groups. It is canonical in the sense that no choices are involved; all the data is written down and can be looked up (at least somewhere). The basis of our construction is the basic gerbe of Gawedzki-Reis and Meinrenken. The main new insight is that under a transgression-regression procedure, the basic gerbe picks up a multiplicative structure coming from the Mickelsson product over the loop group. The conclusion of the constru…
This is the final part of the work started in math.DG/0611281 and math.DG/0703916. Here the question of double fibration ois adressed both for relative k-theory and free multiplicative K-theory. In the case of relative and ``nonfree'' multiplicative K-theory, the direct image is proved to be functorial for double submersions.
We review and then combine two aspects of the theory of bundle gerbes. The first concerns lifting bundle gerbes and connections on those, developed by Murray and Gomi. Lifting gerbes represent obstructions against extending the structure group of a principal bundle. The second is the transgression of gerbes to loop spaces, initiated by Brylinski and McLaughlin and with recent contributions of the author. Combining these two aspects, we obtain a new formulation of lifting problems in terms of geometry on the loop space. Most prominently, our formulation explains the relation between (complex) s…
Closed strings can be seen either as one-dimensional objects in a target space or as points in the free loop space. Correspondingly, a B-field can be seen either as a connection on a gerbe over the target space, or as a connection on a line bundle over the loop space. Transgression establishes an equivalence between these two perspectives. Open strings require D-branes: submanifolds equipped with vector bundles twisted by the gerbe. In this paper we develop a loop space perspective on D-branes. It involves bundles of simple Frobenius algebras over the branes, together with bundles of bimodules…
This is the sequel of the first part math.DG/0611281. Here, the procedure of transgressing the families index theorem (the so-called $η$-form) is adapted to take in account the case of Dirac type operators with kernels of varying dimension. The constructed form is then used to define the direct image under proper submersions of the ``free multiplicative'' $K$-theory which was defined in the first part, the behaviour of the characteristic classes on free multiplicative $K$-theory under submersion is studied. Some universal caracterisation of the forms is provided. Finally, combining our result …
This is a mostly self-contained survey article about bundle gerbes and some of their recent applications in geometry, field theory, and quantisation. We cover the definition of bundle gerbes with connection and their morphisms, and explain the classification of bundle gerbes with connection in terms of differential cohomology. We then survey how the surface holonomy of bundle gerbes combines with their transgression line bundles to yield a smooth bordism-type field theory. Finally, we exhibit the use of bundle gerbes in geometric quantisation of 2-plectic as well as 1- and 2-shifted symplectic…
The use of bundle gerbes and bundle gerbe modules is considered as a replacement for the usual theory of Clifford modules on manifolds that fail to be spin. It is shown that both sides of the Atiyah-Singer index formula for coupled Dirac operators can be given natural interpretations using this language and that the resulting formula is still an identity.
We construct a prequantum 2-Hilbert space for any line bundle gerbe whose Dixmier-Douady class is torsion. Analogously to usual prequantisation, this 2-Hilbert space has the category of sections of the line bundle gerbe as its underlying 2-vector space. These sections are obtained as certain morphism categories in Waldorf's version of the 2-category of line bundle gerbes. We show that these morphism categories carry a monoidal structure under which they are semisimple and abelian. We introduce a dual functor on the sections, which yields a closed structure on the morphisms between bundle gerbe…
Given a family of Dirac operators with vanishing spectral flow we construct a thin-invariant rank-one field theory in the sense of Turner and Willerton arXiv:math.AT/0201116. Our construction of the field theory generalizes the one of the index gerbe by Lott, arXiv:math.DG/0106177, and it also complements the relation between gerbes and thin-invariant rank-one field theories studied in arXive:math.AT/0201116.
This paper contains the constructions of a real manifold version of relative K-theory, and of an extension of Karoubi's multiplicative K-theory suggested by U. Bunke (which I call ``free multiplicative K-theory'' in the sequel). Chern-Simons-Nadel type classes on relative K-theory are constructed, while it is proved that on free multiplicative K-theory, there is a notion of Chern-Weil character form, and of a Borel-type characteristic class (which is a differential form modulo exact forms) which recovers the classes $c_k$ of flat vector bundles studied by Bismut and Lott. Finally, a direct ima…
We generalize the transgression formula for the eta form of Bismut, Cheeger and Berline, Getzler, Vergne for vertical Dirac operators on a fibre bundle with odd dimensional fibres where the Dirac operators have locally at most one eigenvalue of multiplicity one crossing zero transversally.
The goal of this paper is to apply the universal gerbe of \cite{CMi1} and \cite{CMi2} to give an alternative, simple and more unified view of the relationship between index theory and gerbes. We discuss determinant bundle gerbes \cite{CMMi1} and the index gerbe of \cite{L} for the case of families of Dirac operators on odd dimensional closed manifolds. The method also works for a family of Dirac operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary, for a pair of Melrose-Piazza's $Cl(1)$-spectral sections for a family of Dirac operators on even dimensional closed manifolds with vanishing index …
The geometry of nonholonomic bundle gerbes, provided with nonlinear connection structure, and nonholonomic gerbe modules is elaborated as the theory of Clifford modules on nonholonomic manifolds which positively fail to be spin. We explore an approach to such nonholonomic Dirac operators and derive the related Atiyah-Singer index formulas. There are considered certain applications in modern gravity and geometric mechanics of such Clifford-Lagrange/ Finsler gerbes and their realizations as nonholonomic Clifford and Riemann-Cartan modules.
We give an Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theory construction of the bundle of fermionic Fock spaces parametrized by vector potentials in odd space dimensions and prove that this leads in a simple manner to the known Schwinger terms (Faddeev-Mickelsson cocycle) for the gauge group action. We relate the APS construction to the bundle gerbe approach discussed recently by Carey and Murray, including an explicit computation of the Dixmier-Douady class. An advantage of our method is that it can be applied whenever one has a form of the APS theorem at hand, as in the case of fermions in an external grav…
In this paper, we construct the index bundle gerbe of a family of self-adjoint Dirac-type operators, refining a construction of Segal. In a special case, we construct a geometric bundle gerbe called the caloron bundle gerbe, which comes with a natural connection and curving, and show that it is isomorphic to the analytically constructed index bundle gerbe. We apply these constructions to certain moduli spaces associated to compact Riemann surfaces, constructing on these moduli spaces, natural bundle gerbes with connection and curving, whose 3-curvature represent Dixmier-Douady classes that are…
For a smooth family F of admissible elliptic pseudodifferential operators with differential form coefficients associated to a geometric fibration of manifolds M--> B we show that there is a natural zeta-form z(F,s) and zeta-determinant- form det(F) in the de-Rham algebra of smooth differential forms, generalizing the classical single operator spectral zeta function and determinant. In the case where F is the curvature of a superconnection the zeta form is exact, extending to families the Atiyah-Bott-Seeley zeta function formula for the pointwise index, and equivalent to the transgression formu…
This paper is our first step in establishing a de Rham model for equivariant twisted $K$-theory using machinery from noncommutative geometry. Let $G$ be a compact Lie group, $M$ a compact manifold on which $G$ acts smoothly. For any $α\in H^3_G (M, {\mathbb Z})$ we introduce a notion of localized equivariant twisted cohomology $H^\bullet ({\barΩ}^\bullet (M, G, L)_g, d^α_{G^g})$, indexed by $g\in G$. We prove that there exists a natural family of chain maps, indexed by $g\in G$, inducing a family of morphisms from the equivariant periodic cyclic homology $HP^G_\bullet ( C^\infty (M, α) )$, whe…
In the first part of this paper, given a smooth family of Dirac-type operators on an odd-dimensional closed manifold, we construct an abelian gerbe-with-connection whose curvature is the three-form component of the Atiyah-Singer families index theorem. In the second part of the paper, given a smooth family of Dirac-type operators whose index lies in the i-th filtration of the reduced K-theory of the parametrizing space, we construct a set of Deligne cohomology class of degree i whose curvatures are the i-form component of the Atiyah-Singer families index theorem.
We consider a generalized APS boundary problem for a G-invariant Dirac-type operator, which is not of product type near the boundary. We establish a delocalized version (a so-called Kirillov formula) of the equivariant index theorem for this operator. We obtain more explicit formulas for different geometric Dirac-type operators. In particular, we get a formula for the equivariant signature of a local system over a manifold with boundary. In case of a trivial local system, our formula can be viewed as a new way to compute the infinitesimal equivariant eta-invariant of S. Goette. We explicitly c…
We compute explicitly, and without any extra regularity assumptions, the large time limit of the fibrewise heat operator for Bismut-Lott type superconnections in the L^2-setting. This is motivated by index theory on certain non-compact spaces (families of manifolds with cocompact group action) where the convergence of the heat operator at large time implies refined L^2-index formulas. As applications, we prove a local L^2-index theorem for families of signature operators and an L^2-Bismut-Lott theorem, expressing the Becker-Gottlieb transfer of flat bundles in terms of Kamber-Tandeur classes. …
The Chern classes of a K-theory class which is represented by a vector bundle with connection admit refinements to Cheeger-Simons classes in Deligne cohomology. In the present paper we consider similar refinements in the case where the classes in K-theory are represented by geometric families of Dirac operators. In low dimensions these refinements correspond to the exponentiated eta-invariant, the determinant line bundle with Quillen metric and Bismut-Freed connection, and Lott's index gerbe with connection and curving. We give a unified treatement of these cases as well as their higher genera…
We consider various generalisations of the string class of a loop group bundle. The string class is the obstruction to lifting a bundle whose structure group is the loop group $LG$ to one whose structure group is the Kac-Moody central extension of the loop group. We develop a notion of higher string classes for bundles whose structure group is the group of based loops, $ΩG$. In particular, we give a formula for characteristic classes in odd dimensions for such bundles which are associated to characteristic classes for $G$-bundles in the same way that the string class is related to the first Po…
Let $A(t)$ be an elliptic, product-type suspended (which is to say parameter-dependant in a symbolic way) family of pseudodifferential operators on the fibres of a fibration $ϕ$ with base $Y.$ The standard example is $A+it$ where $A$ is a family, in the usual sense, of first order, self-adjoint and elliptic pseudodifferential operators and $t\in\bbR$ is the `suspending' parameter. Let $π_{\cA}:\cA(ϕ)\longrightarrow Y$ be the infinite-dimensional bundle with fibre at $y\in Y$ consisting of the Schwartz-smoothing perturbations, $q,$ making $A_y(t)+q(t)$ invertible for all $t\in\bbR.$ The total e…
