The Chern character of a complex vector bundle is most conveniently defined as the exponential of a curvature of a connection. It is well known that its cohomology class does not depend on the particular connection chosen. It has been shown by Quillen that a connection may be perturbed by an endomorphism of the vector bundle, such as a symbol of some elliptic differential operator. This point of view, as we intend to show, allows one to relate Chern character to a non-commutative sibling formulated by Connes and Moscovici. The general setup for our problem is purely geometric. Let σbe the symbol of a Dirac-type operator acting on sections of a \Z_2-graded vector bundle E. Let \nabla be a connection on E, pulled back to T^*M. Suppose also that \nabla respects the Z_2-grading. The object \nabla+σis a superconnection on T^*M in the sense of Quillen. We obtain a formula for the H_*(M)-valued Poincare dual of Quillen's Chern character ch(D)=trace(exp(\nabla+σ)^2) in terms of residues of Γ(z)trace(\nabla+σ)^{-2z}. We also compute two examples.
The aim of this note is to improve upon our earlier result which translates Weyl's (curvature) formulation of Chern character of a smooth vector bundle into the language of residues. The dualized Chern character is the functional on smooth differential forms on M. In our previous paper, this functional has been expressed as a sum of certain residues in the spirit of the Local Index formula due to Connes and Moscovici. The present note provides a stronger and more effective formulation.
We develop a theory of Cech-Bott-Chern cohomology and in this context we naturally come up with the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. In fact Bott-Chern cohomology has two relatives and they all arise from a single complex. Thus we study these three cohomologies in a unified way and obtain a long exact sequence involving the three. We then study the localization problem of characteristic classes in the relative Bott-Chern cohomology. For this we define the cup product and integration in our framework and we discuss local and global duality homomorphisms. After reviewing some materials on connect…
We provide local expressions for Chern-Weil type forms built from superconnections associated with families of Dirac operators previously investigated in work by S. Scott and later work by S. Scott and the second author. When the underlying fibration of manifolds is trivial, the even degree forms can be interpreted as renormalised Chern-Weil forms in as far as they coincide with regularised Chern-Weil forms up to residue correction terms. Similarly, a new formula for the curvature of the local fermionic vacuum line bundles is derived using a residue correction term added to the naive curvature…
Given a compatible vector field on a compact connected almost-complex manifold, we show in this article that the multiplicities of eigenvalues among the zero point set of this vector field have intimate relations. We highlight a special case of our result and reinterpret it as a vanishing-type result in the framework of the celebrated Atiyah-Bott-Singer localization formula. This new point of view, via the Chern-Weil theory and a strengthened version of Bott's residue formula observed by Futaki and Morita, can lead to an obstruction to Killing real holomorphic vector fields on compact Hermitia…
We extend finite dimensional Chern-Simons theory to certain infinite dimensional principal bundles with connections, in particular to the frame bundle $FLM\to LM$ over the loop space of a Riemannian manifold $M$. Chern-Simons forms are defined roughly as in finite dimensions with the invariant polynomials replaced by appropriate Wodzicki residues. This produces odd dimensional $\R/\Z$-valued cohomology classes on $LM$ if $M$ is parallelizable. We compute an example of a metric on the loop space of $S^3\times S^1$ for which the three dimensional Chern-Simons class is nontrivial.
We present in this article a family of new combinatorial identities via purely differential/complex geometry methods, which include as a speical case a unified and explicit formula for Chern numbers of all complex flag manifolds. Our strategy is to construct concrete circle actions with isolated fixed points on these manifolds and explicitly determine their weights. Then applying Bott's residue formula to these models yields the desired results.
In this note we show that the Chern character form of a superconnection is obtained via the parallel transport of the superconnection along superpaths, by restriction to the universal superpoint path.
The Quillen-Bismut-Freed construction associates a determinant line bundle with connection to an infinite dimensional super vector bundle with a family of Dirac-type operators. We define the regularized first Chern form of the infinite dimensional bundle, and relate it to the curvature of the Bismut-Freed connection on the determinant bundle. In finite dimensions, these forms agree (up to sign), but in infinite dimensions there is a correction term, which we express in terms of Wodzicki residues. We illustrate these results with a string theory computation. There is a natural super vector bund…
In this paper we first prove that every differential character can be represented by differential form with singularities. Then we lift the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem for vector bundles to differential characters.
We propose a dimensional reduction procedure in the Stolz--Teichner framework of supersymmetric Euclidean field theories (EFTs) that is well-suited in the presence of a finite gauge group or, more generally, for field theories over an orbifold. As an illustration, we give a geometric interpretation of the Chern character for manifolds with an action by a finite group.
We show that the universal odd Chern form, defined on the stable unitary group $U$, extends to the loop group $LU$ in a way that is closed with respect to an equivariant-type differential. This provides an odd analogue to the Bismut-Chern form. We also describe the associated transgression form, the so-called Bismut-Chern-Simons form, and explicate some properties it inherits as a differential form on the space of maps of a cylinder into the stable unitary group. As a corollary, we obtain the Chern character homomorphism from odd K-theory to the periodic cohomology of the free loop space, repr…
We introduce certain relative differential characters which we call Cheeger-Chern-Simons characters. These combine the well-known Cheeger-Simons characters with Chern-Simons forms. In the same way as the Cheeger-Simons characters generalize Chern-Simons invariants of oriented closed manifolds, the Cheeger-Chern-Simons characters generalize Chern-Simons invariants of oriented manifolds with boundary. Using Cheeger-Chern-Simons characters, we introduce the notion of differential trivializations of universal characteristic classes. Specializing to the class 1/2 $p_1 \in H^4(B\mathrm{Spin}_n;\math…
We study super parallel transport around super loops in a quotient stack, and show that this geometry constructs a global version of the equivariant Chern character.
On the basis of Dupont's work, we exhibit a cocycle in the simplicial de Rham complex which represents the Chern character. We also prove the related conjecture due to Brylinski. This gives a way to construct a cocycle in a local truncated complex.
These notes form the next episode in a series of articles dedicated to a detailed proof of a cohomological index formula for transversally elliptic pseudo-differential operators and applications. The first two chapters are already available as math.DG/0702575 and arXiv:0711.3898. In this episode, we construct the relative equivariant Chern character of a morphism of vector bundles, localized by a one form, and we prove a multiplicativity property of this generalized Chern character
These notes are the first chapter of a monograph, dedicated to a detailed proof of the equivariant index theorem for transversally elliptic operators. In this preliminary chapter, we prove a certain number of natural relations in equivariant cohomology. These relations include the Thom isomorphism in equivariant cohomology, the multiplicativity of the relative Chern characters, and the Riemann-Roch relation between the relative Chern character of the Bott symbol and of the relative Thom class.
We prove two geometric index theorems for a family of first-order elliptic operators over a manifold with boundary by computing eta form representatives for the Chern character classes of the index bundle. The eta forms occur as relative and regularized traces on infinite-dimensional vector bundles realized as the limiting values of superconnection character forms.
For two complex vector bundles admitting a homomorphism, whose singularity locates in the disjoint union of some odd--dimensional spheres, we give a formula to compute the relative Chern characteristic number of these two complex vector bundles. In particular, for a spin manifold admitting some sphere bundle structure, we give a formula to express the index of a special twisted Dirac operator.
The Chern-Simons forms for R-linear connections on Lie algebroids are considered. A generalized Chern-Simons formula for such R-linear connections is obtained. We it apply to define Chern character and secondary characteristic classes for R-linear connections of Lie algebroids.
The aim of this note is to point out that Chern characters can be computed using curvatures o ``super-connections up to homotopy'. We also present an application to the vanishing theorem for Lie algebroids which is at the origin of new secondary classes of algebroids (Fernandes), hence, in particular, of Poisson manifolds.
In this paper, we give a quantum interpretation of the Bismut-Chern character form (the loop space lifting of the Chern character form) as well as the Chern character form associated to a complex vector bundle with connection over a smooth manifold in the framework of supersymmetric quantum field theories developed by Stolz and Teichner \cite{ST07}. We show that the Bismut-Chern character form comes up via a loop-deloop process when one goes from $1|1$D theory over a manifold down to a $0|1$D theory over its free loop space. Based on our quantum interpretation of the Bismut-Chern character for…
In the 80's, Quillen constructed a de Rham relative cohomology class associated to a smooth morphism between vector bundles, that we call the relative Quillen Chern character. In the first part of this paper we prove the multiplicativ property of the relative Quillen Chern character. Then we obtain a Riemann-Roch formula between the relative Chern character of the Bott morphism and the relative Thom form.
For two complex vector bundles admitting a homomorphism with isolated singularities between them, we establish a Poincaré-Hopf type formula for the difference of the Chern character numbers of these two vector bundles. As a consequence, we extend the original Poincaré-Hopf index formula to the case of complex vector fields (to appear in Mathematische Zeitschrift)
In this note, we give a short proof of the localization formula for the loop space Chern character of a compact Riemannian spin manifold M, using the rescaled spinor bundle on the tangent groupoid associated to M.
We introduce the notion of a {\vartheta}-summable Fredholm module over a locally convex dg algebra Ω and construct its Chern character as a cocycle on the entire cyclic complex of Ω, extending the construction of Jaffe, Lesniewski and Osterwalder to a differential graded setting. Using this Chern character, we prove an index theorem involving an abstract version of a Bismut-Chern character constructed by Getzler, Jones and Petrack in the context of loop spaces. Our theory leads to a rigorous construction of the path integral for N=1/2 supersymmetry which satisfies a Duistermaat-Heckman type lo…
