For module algebras and module coalgebras over an arbitrary bialgebra, we define two types of bivariant cyclic cohomology groups called bivariant Hopf cyclic cohomology and bivariant equivariant cyclic cohomology. These groups are defined through an extension of Connes' cyclic category $Λ$. We show that, in the case of module coalgebras, bivariant Hopf cyclic cohomology specializes to Hopf cyclic cohomology of Connes and Moscovici and its dual version by fixing either one of the variables as the ground field. We also prove an appropriate version of Morita invariance for both of these theories.
We give a survey of cyclic homology/cohomology theory including a detailed discussion of cyclic theories for various classes of topological algebras. We show how to associate cyclic classes with Fredholm modules and $K$-theory classes and how to construct a completely general bivariant Chern-Connes character from bivariant $K$-theory to bivariant cyclic theory.
We extend Cuntz-Quillen's excision theorem for algebras and pro-algebras in arbitrary Q-linear categories with tensor product. The excision theorems for the bivariant periodic cyclic cohomology of discrete, topological and bornological algebras and pro-algebras follow from this.
In this article we further the study of non-commutative motives. We prove that bivariant cyclic cohomology (and its variants) becomes representable in the category of non-commutative motives. Furthermore, Connes' bilinear pairings correspond to the composition operation. As an application, we obtain a simple model, given in terms of infinite matrices, for the (de)suspension of these bivariant cohomology theories.
We establish the continuous homotopy invariance of bivariant local cyclic homology on the category of all σ-C^*-algebras. The argument relies vitally on an isomorphism between the smooth and continuous cylinder constructions using a technical criterion due to Meyer. As a consequence we compute the local cyclic homology of the infinite sphere.
We study the twisted K-theory and K-homology of some infinite dimensional spaces, like SU(\infty), in the bivariant setting. Using a general procedure due to Cuntz we construct a bivariant K-theory on the category of separable σ-C^*-algebras that generalizes both twisted K-theory and K-homology of (locally) compact spaces. We construct a bivariant Chern--Connes type character taking values in bivariant local cyclic homology. We analyse the structure of the dual Chern--Connes character from (analytic) K-homology to local cyclic cohomology under some reasonable hypotheses. We also investigate th…
We calculate the bivariant local cyclic cohomology of the Banach convolution algebra of summable functions on a word-hyperbolic group. Our result implies that the Banach algebraic assembly map in local cyclic homology is an isomorphism for such a group.
Let G be a locally compact group acting smoothly and properly by isometries on a complete Riemannian manifold M, with compact quotient. There is an assembly map which associates to any G-equivariant K-homology class on M, an element of the topological K-theory of a suitable Banach completion B of the convolution algebra of continuous compactly supported functions on G. The aim of this paper is to calculate the composition of the assembly map with the Chern character in the entire cyclic homology of B. We prove an index theorem reducing this computation to a cup-product in bivariant entire cycl…
We show that the Chern-Connes character from Kasparov's bivariant K-theory to bivariant local cyclic cohomology is not always rationally injective. Counterexamples are provided by the reduced group $C^*$-algebras of word-hyperbolic groups with Kazhdan's property (T). The proof makes essential use of Skandalis' work on K-nuclearity and of Lafforgue's recent demonstration of the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients for word-hyperbolic groups.
Following the idea of an invariant differential complex, we construct general-type cyclic modules that provide the common denominator of known cyclic theories. The cyclicity of these modules is governed by Hopf-algebraic structures. We prove that the existence of a cyclic operator forces a modification of the Yetter-Drinfeld compatibility condition leading to the concept of a stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld module. This module plays the role of the space of coefficients in the thus obtained cyclic cohomology of module algebras and coalgebras, and the cyclic homology and cohomology of comodule alge…
Using a smooth version of the Connes--Thom isomorphism in Grensing's bivariant K-theory for locally convex algebras, we prove an equivariant version of the Connes--Thom isomorphism in periodic cyclic homology. As an application, we prove that periodic cyclic homology is invariant with respect to equivariant strict deformation quantization.
We define a new cyclic module, dual to the Connes-Moscovici cyclic module, for Hopf algebras, and give a characteristric map for the coaction of Hopf algebras. We also compute the resulting cyclic homology for cocommutative Hopf algebras, and some quantum groups.
In this paper we study the cyclic cohomology of certain x-Hopf algebras: universal enveloping algebras, quantum algebraic tori, the Connes-Moscovici x-Hopf algebroids and the Kadison bialgebroids. Introducing their stable anti Yetter-Drinfeld modules and cocyclic modules, we compute their cyclic cohomology. Furthermore, we provide a pairing for the cyclic cohomology of x-Hopf algebras which generalizes the Connes-Moscovici characteristic map to x-Hopf algebras. This enables us to transfer the x-Hopf algebra cyclic cocycles to algebra cyclic cocycles.
We discuss a new strategy for the computation of the Hopf-cyclic cohomology of the Connes-Moscovici Hopf algebra $\mathcal{H}_n$. More precisely, we introduce a multiplicative structure on the Hopf-cyclic complex of $\mathcal{H}_n$, and we show that the van Est type characteristic homomorphism from the Hopf-cyclic complex of $\mathcal{H}_n$ to the Gelfand-Fuks cohomology of the Lie algebra $W_n$ of formal vector fields on $\mathbb{R}^n$ respects this multiplicative structure. We then illustrate the machinery for $n=1$.
In this paper we show that both variants of the Hopf cyclic homology has excision under some natural homological conditions on the objects and the coefficient module.
In this paper we construct a cylindrical module $A \natural \mathcal{H}$ for an $\mathcal{H}$-comodule algebra $A$, where the antipode of the Hopf algebra $\mathcal{H}$ is bijective. We show that the cyclic module associated to the diagonal of $A \natural \mathcal{H}$ is isomorphic with the cyclic module of the crossed product algebra $A \rtimes \mathcal{H}$. This enables us to derive a spectral sequence for the cyclic homology of the crossed product algebra. We also construct a cocylindrical module for Hopf module coalgebras and establish a similar spectral sequence to compute the cyclic coho…
A natural extension of the Hopf-cyclic cohomology, with coefficients, is introduced to encompass topological Hopf algebras. The topological theory allows to work with infinite dimensional Lie algebras. Furthermore, the category of coefficients (AYD modules) over a topological Lie algebra and those over its universal enveloping (Hopf) algebra are isomorphic. For topological Hopf algebras, the category of coefficients is identified with the representation category of a topological algebra called the anti-Drinfeld double. Finally, a topological van Est type isomorphism is detailed, connecting the…
We show that all pairings defined in the literature extending Connes-Moscovici characteristic map in Hopf-cyclic cohomology are isomorphic as natural transformations of derived double functors.
We review recent progress in the study of cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras, Hopf algebroids, and invariant cyclic homology starting with the pioneering work of Connes-Moscovici.
We introduce the concept of {\it para-Hopf algebroid} and define their cyclic cohomology in the spirit of Connes-Moscovici cyclic cohomology for Hopf algebras. Para-Hopf algebroids are closely related to, but different from, Hopf algebroids. Their definition is motivated by attempting to define a cyclic cohomology theory for Hopf algebroids in general. We show that many of Hopf algebraic structures, including the Connes-Moscovici algebra $\mathcal{H}_{FM}$, are para-Hopf algebroids.
We define cup coproducts for Hopf cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras and for its dual theory. We show that for universal enveloping algebras and group algebras our coproduct recovers the standard coproducts on Lie algebra homology and group homology, respectively.
A new class of coefficients for the Hopf-cyclic homology of module algebras and coalgebras is introduced. These coefficients, termed stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld contramodules, are both modules and contramodules of a Hopf algebra that satisfy certain compatibility conditions.
We define a Hopf cyclic (co)homology theory in an arbitrary symmetric strict monoidal category. Thus we unify all different types of Hopf cyclic (co)homologies under one single universal theory. We recover Hopf cyclic (co)homology of module algebras, comodule algebras and module coalgebras along with Hopf-Hochschild (co)homology of module algebras. This universal theory also allows us to define the missing Hopf cyclic theory for comodule coalgebras.
This is the first one in a series of two papers on the continuation of our study in cup products in Hopf cyclic cohomology. In this note we construct cyclic cocycles of algebras out of Hopf cyclic cocycles of algebras and coalgebras. In the next paper we consider producing Hopf cyclic cocycle from "equivariant" Hopf cyclic cocycles. Our approach in both situations is based on (co)cyclic modules and bi(co)cyclic modules together with Eilenberg-Zilber theorem which is different from the old definition of cup products defined via traces and cotraces on DG algebras and coalgebras.
In this note the categories of coefficients for Hopf cyclic cohomology of comodule algebras and comodule coalgebras are extended. We show that these new categories have two proper different subcategories where the smallest one is the known category of stable anti Yetter-Drinfeld modules. We prove that components of Hopf cyclic cohomology such as cup products work well with these new coefficients.
We show that various cyclic and cocyclic modules attached to Hopf algebras and Hopf modules are related to each other via Connes' duality isomorphism for the cyclic category.
We define and study equivariant periodic cyclic homology for locally compact groups. This can be viewed as a noncommutative generalization of equivariant de Rham cohomology. Although the construction resembles the Cuntz-Quillen approach to ordinary cyclic homology, a completely new feature in the equivariant setting is the fact that the basic ingredient in the theory is not a complex in the usual sense. As a consequence, in the equivariant context only the periodic cyclic theory can be defined in complete generality. Our definition recovers particular cases studied previously by various author…
We construct cup products of two different kinds for Hopf-cyclic cohomology. When the Hopf algebra reduces to the ground field our first cup product reduces to Connes' cup product in ordinary cyclic cohomology. The second cup product generalizes Connes-Moscovici's characteristic map for actions of Hopf algebras on algebras.
We introduce the cylindrical module $A \natural \mathcal{H}$, where $\mathcal{H}$ is a Hopf algebra and $A$ is a Hopf module algebra over $\mathcal{H}$. We show that there exists an isomorphism between $\mathsf{C}_{\bullet}(A^{op} \rtimes \mathcal{H}^{cop})$ the cyclic module of the crossed product algebra $A^{op} \rtimes \mathcal{H}^{cop} $, and $Δ(A \natural \mathcal{H}) $, the cyclic module related to the diagonal of $A \natural \mathcal{H}$. If $S$, the antipode of $\mathcal{H}$, is invertible it follows that $\mathsf{C}_{\bullet}(A \rtimes \mathcal{H}) \simeq Δ(A^{op} \natural \mathcal{H}…
Let H be a Hopf algebra. By definition a modular crossed H-module is a vector space M on which H acts and coacts in a compatible way. To every modular crossed H-module M we associate a cyclic object Z(H,M). The cyclic homology of Z(H,M) extends the usual cyclic homology of the algebra structure of H, and the relative cyclic homology of an H-Galois extension. For a Hopf subalgebra K we compute, under some assumptions, the cyclic homology of an induced modular crossed module. As a direct application of this computation, we describe the relative cyclic homology of strongly graded algebras. In par…
We define the notion of equivariant Hopf Galois extension and apply it as a functor between category of SAYD modules of the Hopf algebras involving in the extension. This generalizes the result of Jara-Stefan and Böhm-Stefan on associating a SAYD modules to any ordinary Hopf Galois extension.
We give a systematic description of the cyclic cohomology theory of Hopf algebroids in terms of its associated category of modules. Then we introduce a dual cyclic homology theory by applying cyclic duality to the underlying cocyclic object. We derive general structure theorems for these theories in the special cases of commutative and cocommutative Hopf algebroids. Finally, we compute the cyclic theory in examples associated to Lie-Rinehart algebras and étale groupoids.
We construct several pairings in Hopf-cyclic cohomology of (co)module (co)algebras with arbitrary coefficients. The key ideas instrumental in constructing these pairings are the derived functor interpretation of Hopf-cyclic and equivariant cyclic (co)homology, and the Yoneda interpretation of Ext-groups. As a special case of one of these pairings, we recover the Connes-Moscovici characteristic map in Hopf-cyclic cohomology. We also prove that this particular pairing, along with few others, would stay the same if we replace the derived category of (co)cyclic modules with the homotopy category o…
We refine the cyclic cohomological apparatus for computing the Hopf cyclic cohomology of the Hopf algebras associated to infinite primitive Cartan-Lie pseudogroups, and for the transfer of their characteristic classes to foliations. The main novel feature is the precise identification as a Hopf cyclic complex of the image of the canonical homomorphism from the Gelfand-Fuks complex to the Bott complex for equivariant cohomology. This provides a convenient new model for the Hopf cyclic cohomology of the geometric Hopf algebras, which allows for an efficient transport of the Hopf cyclic classes v…
This paper is an introduction to Hopf cyclic cohomology with an emphasis on its most recent developments. We cover three major areas: the original definition of Hopf cyclic cohomology by Connes and Moscovici as an outgrowth of their study of transverse index theory on foliated manifolds, the introduction of Hopf cyclic cohomology with coefficients by Hajac-Khalkhali-Rangipour-Sommerhauser, and finally the latest episode on unifying the coefficients as well as extending the notion to more general settings beyond Hopf algebras. In particular, the last section discusses the relative Hopf cyclic t…
Let k be a field, A a unitary associative k-algebra and V a k-vector space endowed with a distinguished element 1_V. We obtain a mixed complex, simpler that the canonical one, that gives the Hochschild, cyclic, negative and periodic homology of a crossed product E:=A#_f V, in the sense of Brzezinski. We actually work in the more general context of relative cyclic homology. Specifically, we consider a subalgebra K of A that satisfies suitable hypothesis and we find a mixed complex computing the Hochschild, cyclic, negative and periodic homology of E relative to K. Then, when E is a cleft braide…
We introduce a Hopf algebroid associated to a proper Lie group action on a smooth manifold. We prove that the cyclic cohomology of this Hopf algebroid is equal to the de Rham cohomology of invariant differential forms. When the action is cocompact, we develop a generalized Hodge theory for the de Rham cohomology of invariant differential forms. We prove that every cyclic cohomology class of the Hopf algebroid is represented by a generalized harmonic form. This implies that the space of cyclic cohomology of the Hopf algebroid is finite dimensional. As an application of the techniques developed …
We extend the formalism of Hopf cyclic cohomology to the context of braided categories. For a Hopf algebra in a braided monoidal abelian category we introduce the notion of stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld module. We associate a para-cocyclic and a cocyclic object to a braided Hopf algebra endowed with a braided modular pair in involution in the sense of Connes and Moscovici. When the braiding is symmetric the full formalism of Hopf cyclic cohomology with coefficients can be extended to our categorical setting.
This paper is concerned with the theory of cup-products in Hopf-type cyclic cohomology of algebras and coalgebras. Here we give detailed proofs of the statements, announced in our previous paper. We show that the cyclic cohomology of a coalgebra can be obtained from a construction involving noncommutative Weil algebra. Then we use a generalization of Quillen and Crainic's construction to define the cup-product. We discuss the relation of the introduced cup-product and $S$-operations on cyclic cohomology. After this we describe the relation of this type of product and bivariant cyclic cohomolog…
We use stable anti Yetter-Drinfeld contramodules to improve the cup products in Hopf cyclic cohomology. The improvement fixes the lack of functoriality of the cup products previously defined and show that the cup products are sensitive to the coefficients.
A category of coefficients for Hopf cyclic cohomology is defined. It is shown that this category has two proper subcategories of which the smallest one is the known category of stable anti Yetter-Drinfeld modules. The middle subcategory is comprised of those coefficients which satisfy a generalized SAYD condition depending on both the Hopf algebra and the (co)algebra in question. Some examples are introduced to show that these three categories are different. It is shown that all components of Hopf cyclic cohomology work well with the new coefficients we have defined.
We apply categorical machinery to the problem of defining cyclic cohomology with coefficients in two particular cases, namely quasi-Hopf algebras and Hopf algebroids. In the case of the former, no definition was thus far available in the literature, and while a definition exists for the latter, we feel that our approach demystifies the seemingly arbitrary formulas present there. This paper emphasizes the importance of working with a biclosed monoidal category in order to obtain natural coefficients for a cyclic theory that are analogous to the stable anti-Yetter-Drinfeld contramodules for Hopf…
In this dissertation we study the coefficients spaces (SAYD modules) of Hopf-cyclic cohomology theory over a certain family of bicrossed product Hopf algebras, and we compute the Hopf-cyclic cohomology of such Hopf algebras with coefficients. We associate a Hopf algebra, what we call a Lie-Hopf algebra, to any matched pair of Lie groups, Lie algebras and affine algebraic groups via the semi-dualization procedure of Majid. We then identify the SAYD modules over Lie-Hopf algebras with the representations and corepresentations of the total Lie group, Lie algebra or the affine algebraic group of t…
We consider Hopf crossed products of the the type $A#_σ\mathcal{H}$, where $\mathcal{H}$ is a cocommutative Hopf algebra, $A$ is an $\mathcal{H}$-module algebra and $σ$ is a "numerical" convolution invertible 2-cocycle on $\mathcal{H}$. we give an spectral sequence that converges to the cyclic homology of $A#_σ\mathcal{H}$ and identify the $E^1$ and $E^2$ terms of the spectral sequence.
We prove excision in entire and periodic cyclic cohomology and construct a Chern-Connes character for Fredholm modules over a C*-algebra without summability restrictions, taking values in a variant of Connes's entire cyclic cohomology. Before these results can be obtained, we have to sort out some fundamental questions about the class of algebras on which to define entire cyclic cohomology. The right domain of definition for entire cyclic cohomology is the category of complete bornological algebras. For these algebras, we define a bivariant cohomology theory, called analytic cyclic cohomology,…
We construct, study, and apply a characteristic map from the relative periodic cyclic homology of the quotient map for a group action to the periodic Hopf-cyclic homology with coefficients associated with inertia of the action. This result admits, and in fact, comes from, its noncommutative-geometric, or quantized, counterpart. The crucial ingredient is the construction of the appropriate quantization of the cyclic nerve of the action groupoid, the cyclic object related to inertia, as the Connes-cyclic dual of a Hopf-cyclic object with coefficients in some stable anti-Yetter--Drinfeld module q…
In our previous work, Hopf cyclic cohomology in braided monoidal categories, we extended the formalism of Hopf cyclic cohomology due to Connes and Moscovici and the more general case of Hopf cyclic cohomology with coefficients to the context of abelian braided monoidal categories. In this paper we go one step further in reducing the restriction of the ambient category being symmetric. We let the ambient category to be non-symmetric but assume only the restriction on the braid map for the Hopf algebra object (in that category) which is the main player in the theory. In the case of Hopf cyclic c…
The correspondence between Lie algebras, Lie groups, and algebraic groups, on one side and commutative Hopf algebras on the other side are known for a long time by works of Hochschild-Mostow and others. We extend this correspondence by associating a noncommutative noncocommutative Hopf algebra to any matched pair of Lie algebras, Lie groups, and affine algebraic groups. We canonically associate a modular pair in involution to any of these Hopf algebras. More precisely, to any locally finite representation of a matched pair object as above we associate a SAYD module to the corresponding Hopf al…
We associate to each infinite primitive Lie pseudogroup a Hopf algebra of `transverse symmetries', by refining a procedure due to Connes and the first author in the case of the general pseudogroup. The affiliated Hopf algebra can be viewed as a `quantum group' counterpart of the infinite-dimensional primitive Lie algebra of the pseudogroup. It is first constructed via its action on the étale groupoid associated to the pseudogroup, and then realized as a bicrossed product of a universal enveloping algebra by a Hopf algebra of regular functions on a formal group. The bicrossed product structure …
In this paper we calculate both the periodic and non-periodic Hopf-cyclic cohomology of Drinfeld-Jimbo quantum enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ for an arbitrary semi-simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ with coefficients in a modular pair in involution. We show that its Hochschild cohomology is concentrated in a single degree determined by the rank of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$.
We define a version of Hochschild homology and cohomology suitable for a class of algebras admitting compatible actions of bialgebras, called module algebras. We show this (co)homology, called Hopf--Hochschild (co)homology, can also be defined as a derived functor on the category of representations of a crossed product algebra. We investigate the relationship of our theory with Hopf cyclic cohomology and also prove Morita invariance of the Hopf--Hochschild (co)homology.
In this paper, we establish the invariance of cyclic (co)homology of left Hopf algebroids under the change of Morita equivalent base algebras. The classical result on Morita invariance for cyclic homology of associative algebras appears as a special example of this theory. In our main application we consider the Morita equivalence between the algebra of complex-valued smooth functions on the classical 2-torus and the coordinate algebra of the noncommutative 2-torus with rational parameter. We then construct a Morita base change left Hopf algebroid over this noncommutative 2-torus and show that…
We define cyclic cohomology of corings over not necessarily commutative algebras. We observe that the key fact which allows us to define this complex is that enveloping algebra of an algebra is a para Hopf algebroid. This observation enables us to define Hopf cyclic cohomology of corings on which para Hopf algebroids act.
We define an equivariant $K_0$-theory for \textit{Yetter-Drinfeld} algebras over a Hopf algebra with an invertible antipode. We then show that this definition can be generalized to all Hopf-module algebras. We show that there exists a pairing, generalizing Connes' pairing, between this theory and a suitably defined Hopf algebra equivariant cyclic cohomology theory.
We study the Hochschild and cyclic homologies of noncommutative monogenic extensions. As an aplication we compute the Hochschild and cyclic homologies of the rank~1 Hopf algebras introduced by L. Krop and D. Radford in [Finite dimensional Hopf algebras of rank 1 in characteristic 0, Journal of Algebra 302, no. 1, 214-230} (2006)].
REVISED VERSION: We have re-organized the paper, and included some new results. Most important, we prove that the (truncated) Weil complexes compute the cyclic cohomology of the Hopf algebra (see the new Theorem 7.3). We also include a short discussion on the uni-modulare case, and the computation for $H= U_q(sl_2)$. THE OLD ABSTRACT: We give a construction of Connes-Moscovici's cyclic cohomology for any Hopf algebra equipped with a twisted antipode. Furthermore, we introduce a non-commutative Weil complex, which connects the work of Gelfand and Smirnov with cyclic cohomology. We show how the …
The aim of this paper is to provide a unifying categorical framework for the many examples of para-(co)cyclic modules arising from Hopf cyclic theory. Functoriality of the coefficients is immediate in this approach. A functor corresponding to Connes's cyclic duality is constructed. Our methods allow, in particular, to extend Hopf cyclic theory to (Hopf) bialgebroids.
This note discusses the cyclic cohomology of a left Hopf algebroid ($\times_A$-Hopf algebra) with coefficients in a right module-left comodule, defined using a straightforward generalisation of the original operators given by Connes and Moscovici for Hopf algebras. Lie-Rinehart homology is a special case of this theory. A generalisation of cyclic duality that makes sense for arbitrary para-cyclic objects yields a dual homology theory. The twisted cyclic homology of an associative algebra provides an example of this dual theory that uses coefficients that are not necessarily stable anti Yetter-…
