Let $Q_n(x)=\sum_{i=0}^{n} A_{i}x^{i}$ be a random algebraic polynomial where the coefficients $A_0,A_1,... $ form a sequence of centered Gaussian random variables. Moreover, assume that the increments $Δ_j=A_j-A_{j-1}$, $j=0,1,2,...$ are independent, assuming $A_{-1}=0$. The coefficients can be considered as $n$ consecutive observations of a Brownian motion. We obtain the asymptotic behaviour of the expected number of u-sharp crossings of polynomial $Q_n(x)$ . We refer to u-sharp crossings as those zero up-crossings with slope greater than $u$, or those down-crossings with slope smaller than $-u$. We consider the cases where $u$ is unbounded and is increasing with $n$, where $u=o(n^{5/4})$, and $u=o(n^{3/2})$ separately.
Let $Q_n(x)=\sum_{i=0}^{n} A_{i}x^{i}$ be a random polynomial where the coefficients $A_0,A_1,... We study the number of times that such a random polynomial crosses a line which is not necessarily parallel to the x-axis. More precisely we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the expected number of real roots of the equation $Q_n(x)=Kx$, for the ca…
We prove the asymptotic normality of the standardized number of crossings of a centered stationary mixing Gaussian process when both the level and the time horizon go to infinity in such a way that the expected number of crossings also goes to infinity.
In this paper, we study the asymptotic relation between the first crossing point and the last exit time for Gaussian order statistics which are generated by stationary weakly and strongly dependent Gaussian sequences. It is shown that the first crossing point and the last exit time are asymptotically independent and dependent for weakly and strongly dependent respectively. The asymptotic relation between the first exit time and the last exit time for stationary weakly and strongly dependent Gaussian Gaussian sequences are also obtained.
The problem of (pathwise) large deviations for conditionally continuous Gaussian processes is investigated. The theory of large deviations for Gaussian processes is extended to the wider class of random processes -- the conditionally Gaussian processes. The estimates of level crossing probability for such processes are given as an application.
We propose a new approximation for the distribution of the time of the first level $u$ crossing by the random process $\homV{s}-cs$, where $\homV{s}$, $s>0$, is compound renewal process and $c>0$. It is competitive with respect to existing approximations, particularly in the region around the critical point $c=\cS$ which separates processes with positive and negative drifts. This approximation is tightly related to inverse Gaussian distributions.
We propose a new approximation for the distribution of the time of the first crossing of a high level $u$ by random process $\homV{s}-cs$, where $\homV{s}$, $s>0$, is compound renewal process and $c>0$. It significantly outperforms the existing approximations, particularly in the region around the critical point $c=\cS$ which separates processes with positive and negative drifts. This approximation is tightly related to generalized inverse Gaussian distributions.
We study boundary non-crossing probabilities $$ P_{f,u} := \mathrm P\big(\forall t\in \mathbb T\ X_t + f(t)\le u(t)\big) $$ for continuous centered Gaussian process $X$ indexed by some arbitrary compact separable metric space $\mathbb T$. We obtain both upper and lower bounds for $P_{f,u}$. The bounds are matching in the sense that they lead to precise logarithmic asymptotics for the large-drift case $P_{y f,u}$, $y \to+\infty$, which are two-term approximations (up to $o(y)$). The asymptotics are formulated in terms of the solution $\tilde f$ to the constrained optimization problem $$ \|h\|_{…
This paper presents a synthesis on the mathematical work done on level crossings of stationary Gaussian processes, with some extensions. The main results [(factorial) moments, representation into the Wiener Chaos, asymptotic results, rate of convergence, local time and number of crossings] are described, as well as the different approaches [normal comparison method, Rice method, Stein-Chen method, a general $m$-dependent method] used to obtain them; these methods are also very useful in the general context of Gaussian fields. Finally some extensions [time occupation functionals, number of maxi…
Several classical results on boundary crossing probabilities of Brownian motion and random walks are extended to asymptotically Gaussian random fields, which include sums of i.i.d. random variables with multidimensional indices, multivariate empirical processes, and scan statistics in change-point and signal detection as special cases. Some key ingredients in these extensions are moderate deviation approximations to marginal tail probabilities and weak convergence of the conditional distributions of certain ``clumps'' around high-level crossings. We also discuss how these results are related t…
Cramér and Leadbetter introduced in 1967 the sufficient condition \[\frac{r''(s)-r''(0)}{s}\in L^1([0,δ],dx),\qquad δ>0,\] to have a finite variance of the number of zeros of a centered stationary Gaussian process with twice differentiable covariance function $r$. This condition is known as the Geman condition, since Geman proved in 1972 that it was also a necessary condition. Up to now no such criterion was known for counts of crossings of a level other than the mean. This paper shows that the Geman condition is still sufficient and necessary to have a finite variance of the number of any fix…
The paper deals with the asymptotic behavior of the bridge of a Gaussian process conditioned to stay in $n$ fixed points at $n$ fixed past instants. In particular, functional large deviation results are stated for small time. Several examples are considered: integrated or not fractional Brownian motion, $m$-fold integrated Brownian motion. As an application, the asymptotic behavior of the exit probability is studied and used for the practical purpose of the numerical computation, via Monte Carlo methods, of the hitting probability up to a given time.
We consider the number of crossings in a random labelled tree with vertices in convex position. We give a new proof of the fact that this quantity is asymptotically Gaussian with mean $n^2/6$ and variance $n^3/45$. Furthermore, we give an estimate for the Kolmogorov distance to a Gaussian distribution which implies a convergence rate of order $n^{-1/2}$.

Although there is an extensive literature on the maxima of Gaussian processes, there are relatively few non-asymptotic bounds on their lower-tail probabilities. The aim of this paper is to develop such a bound, while also allowing for many types of dependence. Let $(ξ_1,\dots,ξ_N)$ be a centered Gaussian vector with standardized entries, whose correlation matrix $R$ satisfies $\max_{i\neq j} R_{ij}\leq ρ_0$ for some constant $ρ_0\in (0,1)$. Then, for any $ε_0\in(0,\sqrt{1-ρ_0})$, we establish an upper bound on the probability $\mathbb{P}(\max_{1\leq j\leq N} ξ_j\leq ε_0\sqrt{2\log(N)})$ in ter…
This note presents a sharp transport-entropy inequality that improves on Talagrand's inequality for the Gaussian measure, arising as a dual formulation of the functional Santaló inequality. We also discuss some extensions and connections with concentration of measure.
In this paper, we consider smooth shot noise processes and their expected number of level crossings. When the kernel response function is sufficiently smooth, the mean number of crossings function is obtained through an integral formula. Moreover, as the intensity increases, or equivalently, as the number of shots becomes larger, a normal convergence to the classical Rice's formula for Gaussian processes is obtained. The Gaussian kernel function, that corresponds to many applications in physics, is studied in detail and two different regimes are exhibited.
This paper addresses the following question: given a sample of i.i.d. random variables with finite variance, can one construct an estimator of the unknown mean that performs nearly as well as if the data were normally distributed? One of the most popular examples achieving this goal is the median of means estimator. However, it is inefficient in a sense that the constants in the resulting bounds are suboptimal. We show that a permutation-invariant modification of the median of means estimator admits deviation guarantees that are sharp up to $1+o(1)$ factor if the underlying distribution posses…
The sharp asymptotics for the L^2-quantization errors of Gaussian measures on a Hilbert space and, in particular, for Gaussian processes is derived. The condition imposed is regular variation of the eigenvalues.
A sharp Poincaré-type inequality is derived for the restriction of the Gaussian measure on the boundary of a convex set. In particular, it implies a Gaussian mean-curvature inequality and a Gaussian iso second-variation inequality. The new inequality is nothing but an infinitesimal form of Ehrhard's inequality for the Gaussian measure.
We provide a full quantitative version of the Gaussian isoperimetric inequality. Our estimate is independent of the dimension, sharp on the decay rate with respect to the asymmetry and with optimal dependence on the mass.
We prove that the number of crossings in a random labelled tree with vertices in convex position is asymptotically Gaussian with mean $ n^2/6$ and variance $ n^3/45$. A similar result is proved for points in general position under mild constraints.
One problem of wide interest involves estimating expected crossing-times. Several tools have been developed to solve this problem beginning with the works of Wald and the theory of sequential analysis. An extension of his approach is provided by the optional sampling theorem in conjunction with martingale inequalities. Deriving the explicit close form solution for the expected crossing times may be difficult. In this paper, we provide a framework that can be used to estimate expected crossing times of arbitrary stochastic processes. Our key assumption is the knowledge of the average behavior o…
The present work investigates two properties of level crossings of a stationary Gaussian process $X(t)$ with autocorrelation function $R_X(τ)$. We show firstly that if $R_X(τ)$ admits finite second and fourth derivatives at the origin, the length of up-excursions above a large negative level $-γ$ is asymptotically exponential as $-γ\to -\infty$. Secondly, assuming that $R_X(τ)$ admits a finite second derivative at the origin and some defined properties, we derive the mean number of crossings as well as the length of successive excursions above two subsequent large levels. The asymptotic result…
When the underlying random variables are Gaussian, the classical Central Limit Theorem (CLT) is trivial, but the functional CLT is not. The objective of the paper is to investigate the functional CLT for stationary Gaussian processes in the Wasserstein-1 metric on the space of continuous functions. Matching upper and lower bounds are established, indicating that the convergence rate is slightly faster than in the Lévy-Prokhorov metric.
We present a self-contained proof of a uniform bound on multi-point correlations of trigonometric functions of a class of Gaussian random fields. It corresponds to a special case of the general situation considered in [Hairer-Xu], but with improved estimates. As a consequence, we establish convergence of a class of Gaussian fields composite with more general functions. These bounds and convergences are useful ingredients to establish weak universalities of several singular stochastic PDEs.
We prove for an arbitrary one-dimensional random walk with independent increments that the probability of crossing a level at a given time n has the order of square root of n. Moment or symmetry assumptions are not necessary. In removing symmetry the (sharp) inequality P(|X+Y| <= 1) < 2 P(|X-Y| <= 1) for independent identically distributed X,Y is used. In part II we shall discuss the connection of this result to 'polygonal recurrence' of higher-dimensional walks and some conjectures on directionally random walks in the sense of Mauldin, Monticino and v.Weizsaecker [5].
The influence theorem for product measures on the discrete space {0,1}^N may be extended to probability measures with the property of monotonicity (which is equivalent to `strong positive-association'). Corresponding results are valid for probability measures on the cube [0,1]^N that are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. These results lead to a sharp-threshold theorem for measures of random-cluster type, and this may be applied to box-crossings in the two-dimensional random-cluster model.
In this article we study weighted sums of $n$ i.i.d. Gamma($α$) random variables with nonnegative weights. We show that for $n \geq 1/α$ the sum with equal coefficients maximizes differential entropy when variance is fixed. As a consequence, we prove that among nonnegative quadratic forms in $n$ independent standard Gaussian random variables, a diagonal form with equal coefficients maximizes differential entropy, under a fixed variance. This provides a sharp lower bound for the relative entropy between a nonnegative quadratic form and a Gaussian random variable. Bounds on capacities of transmi…
We prove a very general sharp inequality of the Hölder--Young--type for functions defined on infinite dimensional Gaussian spaces. We begin by considering a family of commutative products for functions which interpolates between the point--wise and Wick products; this family arises naturally in the context of stochastic differential equations, through Wong--Zakai--type approximation theorems, and plays a key role in some generalizations of the Beckner--type Poincaré inequality. We then obtain a crucial integral representation for that family of products which is employed, together with a gener…
We prove that the connectivity of the level sets of a wide class of smooth centred planar Gaussian fields exhibits a phase transition at the zero level that is analogous to the phase transition in Bernoulli percolation. In addition to symmetry, positivity and regularity conditions, we assume only that correlations decay polynomially with exponent larger than two -- roughly equivalent to the integrability of the covariance kernel -- whereas previously the phase transition was only known in the case of the Bargmann-Fock covariance kernel which decays super-exponentially. We also prove that the p…

In this paper, we derive explicit sharp two-sided estimates for the Dirichlet heat kernels, in C^{1,1} open sets D in R^d, of a large class of subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components. When D is bounded, our sharp two-sided Dirichlet heat kernel estimates hold for all t>0. Integrating the heat kernel estimates with respect to the time variable t, we obtain sharp two-sided estimates for the Green functions, in bounded C^{1,1} open sets, of such subordinate Brownian motions with Gaussian components.

We study level-set percolation for Gaussian free fields on metric graphs. In two dimensions, we give an upper bound on the chemical distance between the two boundaries of a macroscopic annulus. Our bound holds with high probability conditioned on connectivity and the bound is sharp up to a poly-logarithmic factor with an exponent of one-quarter. This substantially improves a previous result by Li and the first author. In three dimensions and higher, we provide rather sharp estimates of percolation probabilities in different regimes which altogether describe a sharp phase transition.
Consider random polynomial $\sum_{i=0}^na_ix^i$ of independent mean-zero normal coefficients $a_i$, whose variance is a regularly varying function (in $i$) of order $α$. We derive general criteria for continuity of persistence exponents for centered Gaussian processes, and use these to show that such polynomial has no roots in $[0,1]$ with probability $n^{-b_α+o(1)}$, and no roots in $(1,\infty)$ with probability $n^{-b_0+o(1)}$, hence for $n$ even, it has no real roots with probability $n^{-2b_α-2b_0+o(1)}$. Here, $b_α=0$ when $α\le-1$ and otherwise $b_α\in(0,\infty)$ is independent of the de…
We consider a subordinate Brownian motion $X$ with Gaussian components when the scaling order of purely discontinuous part is between $0$ and $2$ including $2$. In this paper we establish sharp two-sided bounds for transition density of $X$ in ${\mathbb R}^d$ and $C^{1,1}$-open sets. As a corollary, we obtain a sharp Green function estimates.
A sharp-threshold theorem is proved for box-crossing probabilities on the square lattice. The models in question are the random-cluster model near the self-dual point $p_{\mathrm {sd}}(q)=\sqrt{q}/(1+\sqrt{q})$, the Ising model with external field, and the colored random-cluster model. The principal technique is an extension of the influence theorem for monotonic probability measures applied to increasing events with no assumption of symmetry.
Let $X$ be a standard Gaussian random variable. For any $p \in (1, \infty)$, we prove the existence of a universal constant $C_{p}>0$ such that the inequality $$(\mathbb{E} |h'(X)|^{p})^{1/p} \geq C_{p} \sqrt{d} (\mathbb{E} |h(X)|^{p})^{1/p}$$ holds for all $d\geq 1$ and all polynomials $h : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C}$ whose spectrum is supported on frequencies at least $d$, that is, $\mathbb{E} h(X) X^{k}=0$ for all $k=0,1, \ldots, d-1$. As an application of this optimal estimate, we obtain an affirmative answer to the Gaussian analogue of a question of Mendel and Naor (2014) concerning the gr…
Kohler-Jobin meets Ehrhard: the sharp lower bound for the Gaussian principal frequency while the Gaussian torsional rigidity is fixed, via rearrangements
We study the distribution of several statistics of large non-crossing partitions. First, we prove the Gaussian limit theorem for the number of blocks of a given fixed size. In contrast to the properties of usual set partitions, we show that the number of blocks of different sizes are negatively correlated, even for large partitions. In addition, we show that the sizes of blocks in a given large non-crossing partition are distributed according to a geometric distribution and not Poisson, as in the case of usual set partitions. Next, we show that the size of the largest block concentrates at $\l…
We propose algebraic criteria that yield sharp Hölder types of inequalities for the product of functions of Gaussian random vectors with arbitrary covariance structure. While our lower inequality appears to be new, we prove that the upper inequality gives an equivalent formulation for the geometric Brascamp-Lieb inequality for Gaussian measures. As an application, we retrieve the Gaussian Hypercontractivity as well as its reverse and we present a generalization of the sharp Young and reverse Young inequalities. From the latter, we recover several known inequalities in literatures including the…
We consider the level-sets of continuous Gaussian fields on $\mathbb{R}^d$ above a certain level $-\ell\in \mathbb{R}$, which defines a percolation model as $\ell$ varies. We assume that the covariance kernel satisfies certain regularity, symmetry and positivity conditions as well as a polynomial decay with exponent greater than $d$ (in particular, this includes the Bargmann-Fock field). Under these assumptions, we prove that the model undergoes a sharp phase transition around its critical point $\ell_c$. More precisely, we show that connection probabilities decay exponentially for $\ell<\ell_…
This work is to popularize the method of computing the distribution of the excursion times for a Gaussian process that involves extended and multivariate Rice's formula. The approach was used in numerical implementations of the high-dimensional integration routine and in earlier work it was shown that the computations are more effective and thus more precise than those based on Rice expansions. The joint distribution of excursion times is related to the distribution of the number of level crossings, a problem that can be attacked via the Rice series expansion, based on the moments of the numbe…
We study the problem of generating a hyperplane tessellation of an arbitrary set $T$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, ensuring that the Euclidean distance between any two points corresponds to the fraction of hyperplanes separating them up to a pre-specified error $δ$. We focus on random gaussian tessellations with uniformly distributed shifts and derive sharp bounds on the number of hyperplanes $m$ that are required. Surprisingly, our lower estimates falsify the conjecture that $m\sim \ell_*^2(T)/δ^2$, where $\ell_*^2(T)$ is the gaussian width of $T$, is optimal.
