A set of binary random variables indexed by a lattice torus is considered. Under a mixing hypothesis, the probability of any proposition belonging to the first order logic of colored graphs tends to 0 or 1, as the size of the lattice tends to infinity. For the particular case of the Ising model with bounded pair potential and surface potential tending to $-\infty$, the threshold functions of local propositions are computed, and sufficient conditions for the zero-one law are given.
The occupation time of an age-dependent branching particle system in $\Rd$ is considered, where the initial population is a Poisson random field and the particles are subject to symmetric $α$-stable migration, critical binary branching and random lifetimes. Two regimes of lifetime distributions are considered: lifetimes with finite mean and lifetimes belonging to the normal domain of attraction of a $γ$-stable law, $γ\in(0,1)$. It is shown that in dimensions $d>αγ$ for the heavy-tailed lifetimes case, and $d>α$ for finite mean lifetimes, the occupation time proccess satisfies a strong law of l…
We derive laws of the iterated logarithm for random walks on random conductance models under the assumption that the random walks enjoy long time sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates.
Stable laws can be tempered by modifying the Lévy measure to cool the probability of large jumps. Tempered stable laws retain their signature power law behavior at infinity, and infinite divisibility. This paper develops random walk models that converge to a tempered stable law under a triangular array scheme. Since tempered stable laws and processes are useful in statistical physics, these random walk models can provide a basic physical model for the underlying physical phenomena.
A necessary condition is given for a sequence of identically distributed and pairwise positively quadrant dependent random variables obeying the strong laws of large numbers with respect to the normalising constants $n^{1/p}$ $(1 \leqslant p < 2)$.
We prove limit theorems for sums of functions of subtrees of binary search trees and random recursive trees. In particular, we give simple new proofs of the fact that the number of fringe trees of size $ k=k_n $ in the binary search tree and the random recursive tree (of total size $ n $) asymptotically has a Poisson distribution if $ k\rightarrow\infty $, and that the distribution is asymptotically normal for $ k=o(\sqrt{n}) $. Furthermore, we prove similar results for the number of subtrees of size $ k $ with some required property $ P $, for example the number of copies of a certain fixed s…
In the paper, upper bounds for the rate of convergence in laws of large numbers for mixed Poisson random sums are constructed. As a measure of the distance between the limit and pre-limit laws, the Zolotarev $ζ$-metric is used. The obtained results extend the known convergence rate estimates for geometric random sums (in the famous R{é}nyi theorem) to a considerably wider class of random indices with mixed Poisson distributions including, e. g., those with the (generalized) negative binomial distribution.
Continuing the study reported in Satheesh (2001),(arXiv:math.PR/0304499 dated 01May2003) here we study certain aspects of randomization in infinitely divisible (ID) and max-infinitely divisible (MID) laws. They generalize ID and MID laws. In particular we study mixtures of ID & MID laws, its relation to random sums & random maximums, corresponding stationary processes & extremal processes and some of their properties. It is shown that mixtures of ID laws and mixtures of MID laws appear as limits of random sums and random maximums respectively. We identify a class of probability generating func…
We formulate conditions for convergence of Laws of Large Numbers and show its links with of the parts of mathematical analysis such as summation theory, convergence of orthogonal series. We present also applications of the Law of Large Numbers such as Stochastic Approximation, Density and Regression Estimation, Identification.
We give examples of piecewise linear random interval maps satisfying arcsine and Darling--Kac laws, which are analogous to Thaler's arcsine and Aaronson's Darling--Kac laws for the Boole transform. They are constructed by random switch of two piecewise linear maps with attracting or repelling fixed points, which behave as if they were indifferent fixed points of a deterministic map.
In this paper, by using the exact tail asymptotics derived by Debicki, Hashorva and Ji (Ann. Probab. 2014), we proved the Gumbel limit theorem for the maximum of a class of non-homogeneous Gaussian random fields. By using the obtained results, we also derived the Gumbel laws for Shepp statistics of fractional Brownian motion and Gaussian integrated process as well as the Gumbel law for Storage process with fractional Brownian motion as input.
Let B_n be the number of self-intersections of a symmetric random walk with finite second moments in the integer planar lattice. We obtain moderate deviation estimates for B_n - E B_n and E B_n- B_n, which are given in terms of the best constant of a certain Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality. We also prove the corresponding laws of the iterated logarithm.
We consider transient random walks in random environment on $\z$ with zero asymptotic speed. A classical result of Kesten, Kozlov and Spitzer says that the hitting time of the level $n$ converges in law, after a proper normalization, towards a positive stable law, but they do not obtain a description of its parameter. A different proof of this result is presented, that leads to a complete characterization of this stable law. The case of Dirichlet environment turns out to be remarkably explicit.
The main purpose of this paper is to obtain strong laws of large numbers for arrays or weighted sums of random variables under a scenario of dependence. Namely, for triangular arrays $\{X_{n,k}, \, 1 \leqslant k \leqslant n, \, n \geqslant 1 \}$ of row-wise extended negatively dependent random variables weakly mean dominated by a random variable $X \in \mathscr{L}_{1}$ and sequences $\{b_{n} \}$ of positive constants, conditions are given to ensure $\sum_{k=1}^{n} \left(X_{n,k} - \mathbb{E} \, X_{n,k} \right)/b_{n} \overset{\textnormal{a.s.}}{\longrightarrow} 0$. Our statements also allow us t…
We consider a general multidimensional affine recursion with corresponding Markov operator $P$ and a unique $P$-stationary measure. We show spectral gap properties on Hölder spaces for the corresponding Fourier operators and we deduce convergence to stable laws for the Birkhoff sums along the recursion. The parameters of the stable laws are expressed in terms of basic quantities depending essentially on the matricial multiplicative part of $P$. Spectral gap properties of $P$ and homogeneity at infinity of the $P$-stationary measure play an important role in the proofs.
For $\,0<α\le \infty$, new subclasses $\,\mathcal{U}^{<α>}$ of the class $\,\mathcal{U}$, of s-selfdecomposable probability measures, are studied. They are described by random integrals, by their characteristic functions and their Lévy spectral measures. Also their relations with the classical Lévy class $L$ of selfdecomposable distributions are investigated.
For an $n\times n$ Laplacian random matrix $L$ with Gaussian entries it is proven that the fluctuations of the largest eigenvalue and the largest diagonal entry of $L/\sqrt{n-1}$ are Gumbel. We first establish suitable non-asymptotic estimates and bounds for the largest eigenvalue of $L$ in terms of the largest diagonal element of $L$. An expository review of existing results for the asymptotic spectrum of a Laplacian random matrix is also presented, with the goal of noting the differences from the corresponding classical results for Wigner random matrices. Extensions to Laplacian block random…
In this note, we make explicit the law of the renormalized supercritical branching random walk, giving credit to a conjecture formulated in a previous works of the authors for a continuous analog of the branching random walk. Also, in the case of a branching random walk on a homogeneous tree, we express the law of the corresponding limiting renormalized Gibbs measures, confirming, in this discrete model, conjectures formulated by physicists about the Poisson-Dirichlet nature of the jumps in the limit, and precising the conjecture by giving the spatial distribution of these jumps.
We study the upper tail behaviors of the local times of the additive Lévy processes and additive random walks. The limit forms we establish are the moderate deviations and the laws of the iterated logarithm for the L_2-norms of the local times and for the local times at a fixed site.
We study exit laws from large balls in $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq3$, of random walks in an i.i.d. random environment that is a small perturbation of the environment corresponding to simple random walk. Under a centering condition on the measure governing the environment, we prove that the exit laws are close to those of a symmetric random walk, which we identify as a perturbed simple random walk. We obtain bounds on total variation distances as well as local results comparing exit probabilities on boundary segments. As an application, we prove transience of the random walks in random environment. …
This paper develops Rio's method [C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I Math., 1995] to prove the weak law of large numbers for maximal partial sums of pairwise independent random variables. The method allows us to avoid using the Kolmogorov maximal inequality. As an application, a weak law of large numbers for maximal partial sums of pairwise independent random variables under a uniform integrability condition is also established. The sharpness of the result is illustrated by an example.
We show that the limit laws of random matrices, whose entries are conditionally independent operator valued random variables having equal second moments proportional to the size of the matrices, are operator valued semicircular laws. Furthermore, we prove an operator valued analogue of Voiculescu's asymptotic freeness theorem. By replacing conditional independence with Boolean independence, we show that the limit laws of the random matrices are Operator-valued Bernoulli laws.
The object of this paper is twofold. From one side we study the dichotomy, in terms of the Extremal Index of the possible Extreme Value Laws, when the rare events are centred around periodic or non periodic points. Then we build a general theory of Extreme Value Laws for randomly perturbed dynamical systems. We also address, in both situations, the convergence of Rare Events Point Processes. Decay of correlations against $L^1$ observables will play a central role in our investigations.
A general method to prove strong laws of large numbers for random fields is given. It is based on the Hájek - Rényi type method presented in Noszály and Tómács \cite{noszaly} and in Tómács and Líbor \cite{thomas06}. Noszály and Tómács \cite{noszaly} obtained a Hájek-Rényi type maximal inequality for random fields using moments inequalities. Recently, Tómács and Líbor \cite{thomas06} obtained a Hájek-Rényi type maximal inequality for random sequences based on probabilities, but not for random fields. In this paper we present a Hájek-Rényi type maximal inequality for random fields, using probabi…
We are going to study the limiting spectral measure of fixed dimensional Hermitian block-matrices with large dimensional Wigner blocks. We are going also to identify the limiting spectral measure when the Hermitian block-structure is Circulant. Using the limiting spectral measure of a Hermitian Circulant block-matrix we will show that the spectral measure of a Wigner matrix with $k-$weakly dependent entries need not to be the semicircle law in the limit.
Strong laws of large numbers are established for random fields with weak or strong dependence. These limit theorems are applicable to random fields with heavy-tailed distributions including fractional stable random fields. The conditions for SLLN are described in terms of the $p$-th moments of the partial sums of the random fields, which are convenient to verify. The main technical tool in this paper is a maximal inequality for the moments of partial sums of random fields that extends the technique of Levental, Chobanyan and Salehi \cite{chobanyan-l-s} for a sequence of random variables indexe…
We consider moderately trimmed sums of non-negative i.i.d. random variables. We show that for every distribution function there exists a proper moderate trimming such that for the trimmed sum a non-trivial strong law of large numbers holds. In case that the distribution function has regularly varying tails we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the trimming for a strong law of large numbers to hold.
Applying the concept of matricial freeness which generalizes freeness in free probability, we have recently studied asymptotic joint distributions of symmetric blocks of Gaussian random matrices (Gaussian Symmetric Block Ensemble). This approach gives a block refinement of the fundamental result of Voiculescu on asymptotic freeness of independent Gaussian random matrices. In this paper, we show that this framework is natural for constructing a random matrix model for free Meixner laws. We also demonstrate that the ensemble of independent matrices of this type is asymptotically conditionally fr…
We examine maximum vertex coloring of random geometric graphs, in an arbitrary but fixed dimension, with a constant number of colors. Since this problem is neither scale-invariant nor smooth, the usual methodology to obtain limit laws cannot be applied. We therefore leverage different concepts based on subadditivity to establish convergence laws for the maximum number of vertices that can be colored. For the constants that appear in these results, we provide the exact value in dimension one, and upper and lower bounds in higher dimensions.
Let $\{V_{i,j}; (i,j)\in\N^2\}$ be a two-dimensional array of i.i.d.\ random variables. The limit laws of the sum of independent random products $$ Z_n=\sum_{i=1}^{N_n} \prod_{j=1}^{n} e^{V_{i,j}} $$ as $n,N_n\to\infty$ have been investigated by a number of authors. Depending on the growth rate of $N_n$, the random variable $Z_n$ obeys a central limit theorem, or has limiting $α$-stable distribution. The latter result is true for non-lattice $V_{i,j}$ only. Our aim is to study the lattice case. We prove that although the (suitably normalized) sequence $Z_n$ fails to converge in distribution, i…
Under the unifying umbrella of a general result of Penrose & Yukich [Ann. Appl. Probab., (2003) 13, 277--303] we give laws of large numbers (in the $L^p$ sense) for the total power-weighted length of several nearest-neighbour type graphs on random point sets in $\R^d$, $d\in\N$. Some of these results are known; some are new. We give limiting constants explicitly, where previously they have been evaluated in less generality or not at all. The graphs we consider include the k-nearest neighbours graph, the Gabriel graph, the minimal directed spanning forest, and the on-line nearest-neighbour grap…
Kolmogorov's exponential inequalities are basic tools for studying the strong limit theorems such as the classical laws of the iterated logarithm for both independent and dependent random variables. This paper establishes the Kolmogorov type exponential inequalities of the partial sums of independent random variables as well as negatively dependent random variables under the sub-linear expectations. As applications of the exponential inequalities, the laws of the iterated logarithm in the sense of non-additive capacities are proved for independent or negatively dependent identically distribute…
Moderate deviation principles (MDPs) for random walks on covering graphs with groups of polynomial volume growth are discussed in a geometric point of view. They deal with any intermediate spatial scalings between those of laws of large numbers and those of central limit theorems. The corresponding rate functions are given by quadratic forms determined by the Albanese metric associated with the given random walks. We apply MDPs to establish laws of the iterated logarithm on the covering graphs by characterizing the set of all limit points of the normalized random walks.
We characterize the limiting smallest eigenvalue distributions (or hard edge laws) for sample covariance type matrices drawn from a spiked population. In the case of a single spike, the results are valid in the context of the general beta ensembles. For multiple spikes, the necessary construction restricts matters to real, complex or quaternion (beta=1, 2, or 4) ensembles. The limit laws are described in terms of a random integral operators, and partial differential equations satisfied by the corresponding distribution functions are derived as corollaries. We also show that, under a natural li…
In this paper, we define a new and broad family of vector-valued random fields called tempered operator fractional operator-stable random fields (TRF, for short). TRF is typically non-Gaussian and generalizes tempered fractional stable stochastic processes. TRF comprises moving average and harmonizable-type subclasses that are constructed by tempering (matrix-) homogeneous, matrix-valued kernels in time- and Fourier-domain stochastic integrals with respect to vector-valued, strictly operator-stable random measures. We establish the existence and fundamental properties of TRF. Assuming both Gau…
Two approaches are suggested to the definition of asymmetric generalized Weibull distribution. These approaches are based on the representation of the two-sided Weibull distributions as variance-mean normal mixtures or more general scale-location mixtures of the normal laws. Since both of these mixtures can be limit laws in limit theorems for random sums of independent random variables, these approaches can provide additional arguments in favor of asymmetric two-sided Weibull-type models of statistical regularities observed in some problems related to stopped random walks, in particular, in pr…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the maximum interpoint distance of random points in a $d$-dimensional set with a unique diameter and a smooth boundary at the poles. Instead of investigating only a fixed number of $n$ points as $n$ tends to infinity, we consider the much more general setting in which the random points are the supports of appropriately defined Poisson processes. The main result covers the case of uniformly distributed points within a $d$-dimensional ellipsoid with a unique major axis. Moreover, several generalizations of the main result are established, for example a limit l…
We prove that multidimensional diffusions in random environment have a limiting velocity which takes at most two different values. Further, in the two-dimensional case we show that for any direction, the probability to escape to infinity in this direction equals either zero or one. Combined with our results on the limiting velocity, this implies a strong law of large numbers in two dimensions.
This paper is concerned with the limit laws of the extreme order statistics derived from a symmetric Laplace walk. We provide two different descriptions of the point process of the limiting extreme order statistics: a branching representation and a squared Bessel representation. These complementary descriptions expose various hidden symmetries in branching processes and Brownian motion which lie behind some striking formulas found by Schehr and Majumdar (Phys. Rev. Lett., 108:040601). In particular, the Bessel process of dimension $4 = 2+2$ appears in the descriptions as a path decomposition o…
We show that a uniformly continuous random perturbation of a transitive map defines an aperiodic Harris chain which also satisfies Doeblin's condition. As a result, we get exponential decay of correlations for suitable random perturbations of such systems. We also prove that, for transitive maps, the limiting distribution for Extreme Value Laws (EVLs) and Hitting/Return Time Statistics (HTS/RTS) is standard exponential. Moreover, we show that the Rare Event Point Process (REPP) converges in distribution to a standard Poisson process.
We prove a general noncommutative law of large numbers. This applies in particular to random walks on any locally finite homogeneous graph, as well as to Brownian motion on Riemannian manifolds which admit a compact quotient. It also generalizes Oseledec's multiplicative ergodic theorem. In addition, we show that $ε$-shadows of any ballistic random walk with finite moment on any group eventually intersect. Some related results concerning Coxeter groups and mapping class groups are recorded in the last section.

The random key graph is a random graph naturally associated with the random key predistribution scheme of Eschenauer and Gligor for wireless sensor networks. For this class of random graphs we establish a new version of a conjectured zero-one law for graph connectivity as the number of nodes becomes unboundedly large. The results reported here complement and strengthen recent work on this conjecture by Blackburn and Gerke. In particular, the results are given under conditions which are more realistic for applications to wireless sensor networks.
Let $\{X_n\}_n$ be a sequence of freely independent, identically distributed non-commutative random variables. Consider a sequence $\{W_n\}_n$ of the renormalized spectral maximum of random variables $X_1,\cdots, X_n$. It is known that the renormalized spectral maximum $W_n$ converges to the free extreme value distribution under certain conditions on the distribution function. In this paper, we provide a rate of convergence in the Kolmogorov distance between a distribution function of $W_n$ and the free extreme value distribution.
A random walk in a sparse random environment is a model introduced by Matzavinos et al. [Electron. J. Probab. 21, paper no. 72: 2016] as a generalization of both a simple symmetric random walk and a classical random walk in a random environment. A random walk $(X_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}\cup\{0\}}$ in a sparse random environment $(S_k,λ_k)_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}$ is a nearest neighbor random walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ that jumps to the left or to the right with probability $1/2$ from every point of $\mathbb{Z}\setminus \{\ldots,S_{-1},S_0=0,S_1,\ldots\}$ and jumps to the right (left) with the random probabilit…
In this paper, we consider directed polymers in random environment with long range jumps in discrete space and time. We extend to this case some techniques, results and classifications known in the usual short range case. However, some properties are drastically different when the underlying random walk belongs to the domain of attraction of an $\a$-stable law. For instance, we construct natural examples of directed polymers in random environment which experience weak disorder in low dimension.
We study the asymptotic laws for the spatial distribution and the number of connected components of zero sets of smooth Gaussian random functions of several real variables. The primary examples are various Gaussian ensembles of real-valued polynomials (algebraic or trigonometric) of large degree on the sphere or torus, and translation-invariant smooth Gaussian functions on the Euclidean space restricted to large domains.
In this short note, we study the behaviour of a product of matrices with a simultaneous renormalization. Namely, for any sequence $(A\_n)\_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ of $d\times d$ complex matrices whose mean $A$ exists and whose norms' means are bounded, the product $\left(I\_d + \frac1n A\_0 \right) \dots \left(I\_d + \frac1n A\_{n-1} \right) $ converges towards $\exp{A}$. We give a dynamical version of this result as well as an illustration with an example of "random walk" on horocycles of the hyperbolic disc.
We consider weighted sums of independent random variables regulated by an increment sequence. We provide operative conditions that ensure strong law of large numbers for such sums to hold in both the centered and non-centered case. The existing criteria for the strong law are either implicit or assume some sufficient decay for the sequence of coefficients. In our set up we allow for arbitrary sequence of coefficients, possibly random, provided the random variables regulated by such increments satisfy some mild concentration conditions. In the non-centered case, convergence can be translated in…
Random Walks in Cooling Random Environments (RWCRE) is a model of random walks in dynamic random environments where the entire environment is resampled along a fixed sequence of times, called the "cooling sequence," and is kept fixed in between those times. This model interpolates between that of a homogenous random walk, where the environment is reset at every step, and Random Walks in (static) Random Environments (RWRE), where the environment is never resampled. In this work we focus on the limiting distributions of one-dimensional RWCRE in the regime where the fluctuations of the correspond…
