We study genericity of dynamical properties in the space of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set and in the space of subshifts of a suitably large shift space. These rather different settings are related by a Glasner-King type correspondence: genericity in one is equivalent to genericity in the other.
By applying symbolic techniques in the shift-space model we derive new results about genericity of dynamical properties for transitive and totally transitive homeomorphisms of the Cantor set. We show that the isomorphism class of the universal odometer is generic in the space of transitive systems. On the other hand, the space of totally transitive systems displays much more varied dynamics. In particular, we show that in this space the isomorphism class of every Cantor system without periodic points is dense, and the following properties are generic: minimality, zero entropy, disjointness from a fixed totally transitive system, weak mixing, strong mixing, and minimal self joinings. The last two stand in striking contrast to the situation in the measure-preserving category. We also prove a correspondence between genericity of dynamical properties in the measure-preserving category and genericity of systems supporting an invariant measure with the same property.
We study the circle homeomorphisms extensions over a strictly ergodic homeomorphism. Under a very mild restriction, we show that the fibered rotation number is locally constant on an open and dense subset. In the complement of this set, we found a dense subset in which every map is conjugate to a direct product. Our result provides a generalisation of Avila-Bochi-Damanik's result on ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})-$cocycles, and Jager-Wang-Zhou's result on quasi-periodically forced maps, to a broader setting.
For bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms of a compact manifold it is known that topological entropy is always finite. For compact manifolds of dimension two or greater, we show that in the closure of the space of bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms, with respect to either the Hölder or the Sobolev topologies, topological entropy is generically infinite. We also prove versions of the $C^1$-Closing Lemma in either of these spaces. Finally, we give examples of homeomorphisms with infinite topological entropy which are Hölder and/or Sobolev of every exponent.
There is a $C^1$-residual (Baire second class) subset $\mathcal{R}$ of symplectic diffeomorphisms on $2d$-dimensional manifold, $d\geq 1$, such that for every non-Anosov $f$ in $\mathcal{R}$ its topological entropy is lower bounded by the supremum of the Lyapunov exponents of their hyperbolic periodic points in the \emph{unbreakable central subbundle} (i.e., central direction with no dominated splitting) of $f$. The previous result deals with the fact that for $f$ in a residual set $\tilde{\mathcal{R}}$ of symplectic diffeomorphisms (containing $\mathcal{R}$) satisfies a trichotomy: or $f$ is …
To each colored graph, one can associate its closure in the universal space of isomorphism classes of pointed colored graphs, and this subspace can be regarded as a generalized subshift. Based on this correspondence, we extend the notion of chaotic dynamical systems to colored graphs. We introduce definitions for chaotic and almost chaotic (colored) graphs, and prove their topological genericity in various subsets of the universal space.
We show that the topological groups $Diff_{+}^{1}(I)$ and $Diff_{+}^{1}(\mathbb{S}^1)$ of orientation-preserving $C^1$-diffeomorphisms of the interval and the circle, respectively, admit finitely generated dense subgroups. We also investigate the question of genericity (in the sense of Baire category) of such finite topological generating sets in related groups. We show that the generic pair of elements in the homeomorphism group $Homeo_+(I)$ generate a dense subgroup of $Homeo_+(I)$. By contrast, if $M$ is any compact connected manifold with boundary other than the interval, we observe that a…
We define a notion of equivariant non-degeneracy of $G$-maps to introduce the class of equivariantly non-degenerate flows on smooth compact manifolds with compact Lie group action. We prove genericity of this class and use this result to construct an equivariant version of the Fuller index, which detects group orbits of periodic orbits of the flow, distinguished by their isotropy.
Let $M$ be a manifold with pinched negative sectional curvature. We show that when $M$ is geometrically finite and the geodesic flow on $T^1 M$ is topologically mixing then the set of mixing invariant measures is dense in the set $\mathscr{M}^1(T^1M)$ of invariant probability measures. This implies that the set of weak-mixing measures which are invariant by the geodesic flow is a dense $G_δ$ subset of $\mathscr{M}^1(T^1 M)$. We also show how to extend these results to manifolds with cusps or with constant negative curvature.
We show that every two-dimensional class of topological similarity, and hence every diagonal conjugacy class of pairs, is meager in the group of order preserving bijections of the rationals and in the group of automorphisms of the randomly ordered rational Urysohn space.
M. Gromov introduced the mean dimension for a continuous map in the late 1990's, which is an invariant under topological conjugacy. On the other hand, the notion of metric mean dimension for a dynamical system was introduced by Lindenstrauss and Weiss in 2000 and this refines the topological entropy for dynamical systems with infinite topological entropy. In this paper we will show if $N$ is a $n$ dimensional compact riemannian manifold then, for any $a\in [0,n]$, the set consisting of continuous maps with metric mean dimension equal to $a$ is dense in $C^{0}(N)$ and for $a=n$ this set is resi…
This survey is focused on the results related to topologies on the groups of transformations in ergodic theory, Borel, and Cantor dynamics. Various topological properties (density, connectedness, genericity) of these groups and their subsets (subgroups) are studied.
The notion of slow entropy, both upper and lower slow entropy, was defined by Katok and Thouvenot as a more refined measure of complexity for dynamical systems, than the classical Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. For any subexponential rate function $a_n(t)$, we prove there exists a generic class of invertible measure preserving systems such that the lower slow entropy is zero and the upper slow entropy is infinite. Also, given any subexponential rate $a_n(t)$, we show there exists a rigid, weak mixing, invertible system such that the lower slow entropy is infinite with respect to $a_n(t)$. This give…
In this paper we prove results on Birkhoff and Oseledets genericity along certain curves in the space of affine lattices and in moduli spaces of translation surfaces. We also prove applications of these results to dynamical billiards, mathematical physics and number theory. In the space of affine lattices $ASL_2(\mathbb{R})/ASL_2( \mathbb{Z})$, we prove that almost every point on a curve with some non-degeneracy assumptions is Birkhoff generic for the geodesic flow. This implies almost everywhere genericity for some curves in the locus of branched covers of the torus inside the stratum $\mathc…
This memoir is concerned with the generic dynamical properties of conservative homeomorphisms of compact manifolds. Several important techniques allowing to prove genericity results are presented: we emphasize the important role played by periodic approximations of homeomorphisms, and by the embedding of the space of homeomorphisms in the space of bi-measurable automorphisms.
Let M be an invariant subvariety in the moduli space of translation surfaces. We contribute to the study of the dynamical properties of the horocycle flow on M. In the context of dynamics on the moduli space of translation surfaces, we introduce the notion of a 'weak classification of horocycle invariant measures' and we study its consequences. Among them, we prove genericity of orbits and related uniform equidistribution results, asymptotic equidistribution of sequences of pushed measures, and counting of saddle connection holonomies. As an example, we show that invariant varieties of rank on…
In this paper, inspired by the article [5], we introduce the induced topological pressure for a topological dynamical system. In particular, we prove a variational principle for the induced topological pressure.
We study the topological and ergodic dynamics of Bohr almost periodic motions of a topological abelian semigroup acting continuously on a compact metric space.
This paper discusses the variational principles on subsets for topological pressure and topological entropy of non-autonomous dynamical systems. We define the Pesin-Pitskel topological pressure (weighted topological pressure) and the Bowen topological entropy (weighted Bowen topological entropy) for any subset. Also, we define the measure-theoretic pressure and the measure-theoretic lower entropy for all Borel probability measures. Then, we prove variational principles for topological pressure (topological entropy) which links the Pesin-Pitskel topological pressure (weighted topological pressu…
We prove that a zero topological entropy continuous tree map always displays zero topological sequence entropy when it is restricted to its non-wandering and chain recurrent sets. In addition, we show that a similar result is not possible when the phase space is a dendrite even when we consider only the restriction on the set of periodic points.
The goal of this article is to study how combinatorial equivalence implies topological conjugacy. For that, we introduce the concept of kneading sequences for nonautonomous discrete dynamical systems and show that these sequences are a complete invariant for topological conjugacy classes.
In this paper we study topological entropy and recurrence properties of non-autonomous dynamical system generated by a family of continuous self maps on a compact space X. Specially, we introduce the pseudo-entropy and periodic-pseudo-entropy and prove their equivalence with the topological entropy for non-autonomous dynamical systems.
The notion of topological equivalence plays an essential role in the study of dynamical systems of flows. However, it is inherently difficult to generalize this concept to systems without well-posedness in the sense of Hadamard. In this study, we formulate a notion of "topological equivalence" between such systems based on the axiomatic theory of topological dynamics proposed by Yorke, and discuss its relation with the usual definition. During this process, we generalize Yorke's theory to the action of topological groups.
We study dynamics of continuous maps on compact metrizable spaces containing a free interval (i.e., an open subset homeomorphic to an open interval). A special attention is paid to relationships between topological transitivity, weak and strong topological mixing, dense periodicity and topological entropy as well as to the topological structure of minimal sets. In particular, a trichotomy for minimal sets and a dichotomy for transitive maps are proved.
We introduce the notion of Bohr chaoticity, which is a topological invariant for topological dynamical systems, and which is opposite to the property required by Sarnak's conjecture. We prove the Bohr chaoticity for all systems which have a horseshoe and for all toral affine dynamical systems of positive entropy, some of which don't have a horseshoe. But uniquely ergodic dynamical systems are not Bohr chaotic.
We give a summary on the recent development of chaos theory in topological dynamics, focusing on Li-Yorke chaos, Devaney chaos, distributional chaos, positive topological entropy, weakly mixing sets and so on, and their relationships.
Using the combinatorial properties of subsets of integers, a classification of metric dynamical systems was given in [V. Bergelson and T. Downarowicz, Large sets of integers and hierarchy of mixing properties of measure-preserving systems, Colloquium Mathematicum, 110(1), (2008), 117-150]. As a result, some new families emerged. Here, their counterparts in topological dynamics has been considered. The differences will be discussed and new classes of systems in topological dynamics will be introduced.
In the present paper, we define the concept of weak topological conjugacy and we establish sufficient conditions to obtain this kind of topological conjugacy between two limit sets. We use the character of recurrence to obtain the results.
In this paper, we investigate the embeddings for topological flows. We prove an embedding theorem for discrete topological system. Our results apply to suspension flows via constant function, and for this case we show an embedding theorem for suspension flows and give a new proof of Gutman-Jin embedding theorem.
In ergodic theory, given sufficient conditions on the system, every weak mixing $\mathbb{N}$-action is strong mixing along a density one subset of $\mathbb{N}$. We ask if a similar statement holds in topological dynamics with density one replaced with thickness. We show that given sufficient initial conditions, a group action in topological dynamics is strong mixing on a thick subset of the group if and only if the system is $k$-transitive for all $k$, and conclude that an analogue of this statement from ergodic theory holds in topological dynamics when dealing with abelian groups.
We generalize a result of Lindenstrauss on the interplay between measurable and topological dynamics which shows that every separable ergodic measurably distal dynamical system has a minimal distal model. We show that such a model can, in fact, be chosen completely canonically. The construction is performed by going through the Furstenberg--Zimmer tower of a measurably distal system and showing that at each step, there is a simple and canonical distal minimal model. This hinges on a new characterization of isometric extensions in topological dynamics.
A topological dynamical system $(X,f)$ induces two natural systems, one is on the probability measure spaces and other one is on the hyperspace. We introduce a concept for these two spaces, which is called entropy order, and prove that it coincides with topological entropy of $(X,f)$. We also consider the entropy order of an invariant measure and a variational principle is established.
We study chaotic properties of uniformly convergent nonautonomous dynamical systems. We show that, contrary to the autonomous systems on the compact interval, positivity of topological sequence entropy and occurrence of Li-Yorke chaos are not equivalent, more precisely, neither of the two possible implications is true.
This paper discusses the thermodynamic properties for certain time-dependent dynamical systems. In particular, we are interested in time-dependent dynamical systems with the specification property. We show that each time-dependent dynamical system given by a sequence of surjective continuous self maps of a compact metric space with the specification property has positive topological entropy and all points are entropy point. In particular, it is proved that these systems are topologically chaotic. We will treat the dynamics of uniformly Ruelle-expanding time-dependent dynamical systems on compa…
We systematically investigate examples of non-hyperbolic dynamical systems having irregular sets of full topological entropy and full Hausdorff dimension. The examples include some partially hyperbolic systems and geometric Lorenz flows. We also pose interesting questions for future research.
We study the dynamics of the attractor of the doubling map with an asymmetrical hole by associating to each hole an element of the lexicographic world. A description of the topological entropy function is given. We show that the set of parameters $(a,b)$ such that the dynamics of the mentioned attractor corresponds to a subshift of finite type is open and dense. Using the connections between this family of open dynamical systems, intermediate $β$-expansions and Lorenz maps we study the topological transitivity and the specification property for such maps.
We explore the dynamics of graph maps with zero topological entropy. It is shown that a continuous map $f$ on a topological graph $G$ has zero topological entropy if and only if it is locally mean equicontinuous, that is the dynamics on each orbit closure is mean equicontinuous. As an application, we show that Sarnak's Möbius Disjointness Conjecture is true for graph maps with zero topological entropy. We also extend several results known in interval dynamics to graph maps. We show that a graph map has zero topological entropy if and only if there is no $3$-scrambled tuple if and only if the p…
This paper shows the equivalence class definition of graphons hinders a direct development of dynamics on the graphon space, and hence proposes a state-driven approach to obtain dynamic graphons. The state-driven dynamic graphon model constructs a time-index sequence of the permutation-invariant probability measures on the universal graph space by assigning i.i.d. state random processes to $\mathbbm{N}$ and edge random variables to each of the unordered integer pairs. The model is justified from three perspectives: graph limit definition preservation, genericity, and analysis availability. It …
This sequel to our previous paper [MS11b] continues the study of topological contact dynamics and applications to contact dynamics and topological dynamics. We provide further evidence that the topological automorphism groups of a contact structure and a contact form are the appropriate transformation groups of contact dynamical systems. The article includes an examination of the groups of time-one maps of topological contact and strictly contact isotopies, and the construction of a bi-invariant metric on the latter. Moreover, every topological contact or strictly contact dynamical system is a…
Let $T\times X\rightarrow X, (t,x)\mapsto tx$, be a topological semiflow on a topological space $X$ with phase semigroup $T$. We introduce and discuss in this paper various transitivity dynamics of $(T,X)$.
In this paper we try to establish a connection between a three-dimensional Lotka--Volterra dynamical system and two-dimensional topological surgery. There are many physical phenomena exhibiting two-dimensional topological surgery through a `hole drilling' process. By our connection, such phenomena may be modelled mathematically by the above dynamical system.
We develop a systematic approach to the study of independence in topological dynamics with an emphasis on combinatorial methods. One of our principal aims is to combinatorialize the local analysis of topological entropy and related mixing properties. We also reframe our theory of dynamical independence in terms of tensor products and thereby expand its scope to C*-dynamics.
We wish to investigate some elementary problems concerning topological dynamics revolving around our proposed definition of escaping set. We also discuss the notion of escaping set in the induced dynamics of the hyperspace. Moreover, we extend the notion of limit set and escaping set for the general semigroup generated by continuous self maps.
We study in this paper some connections between the Fraisse theory of amalgamation classes and ultrahomogeneous structures, Ramsey theory, and topological dynamics of automorphism groups of countable structures.
The possible dynamics of an ecosystem with three interconnected patches among which one population can migrate are investigated, paying attention to the consequences that possible disruption in the communicating paths can cause.
Starting with a combinatorial partition theorem for words over an infinite alphabet dominated by a fixed sequence, established recently by the authors, we prove recurrence results for topological dynamical systems indexed by such words. In this way we extend the classical theory developed by Furstenberg and Weiss of dynamical systems indexed by the natural numbers to systems indexed by words. Moreover, applying this theory to topological systems indexed by semigroups that can be represented as words we get analogous recurrence results for such systems.
This paper concerns the restricted 3-body problem. By applying topological methods we give a computer assisted proof of the existence of some classes of periodic orbits, the existence of symbolic dynamics and we give a rigorous lower estimate for the topological entropy.
Following the works of Newelski we continue the study of the relations between abstract topological dynamics and generalized stable group theory. We show that the Ellis theory, applied to the action of G(M) on its type space, for G an fsg group in a NIP theory, and M any model, yields the quotient G/G^00.
