We develop a systematic approach to the study of independence in topological dynamics with an emphasis on combinatorial methods. One of our principal aims is to combinatorialize the local analysis of topological entropy and related mixing properties. We also reframe our theory of dynamical independence in terms of tensor products and thereby expand its scope to C*-dynamics.

Family-independence for topological and measurable dynamics

For a family F (a collection of subsets of Z_+), the notion of F-independence is defined both for topological dynamics (t.d.s.) and measurable dynamics (m.d.s.). Two results on entropy, chaos, and independence in symbolic dynamics

We survey the connections between entropy, chaos, and independence in topological dynamics. We present extensions of two classical results placing the following notions in the context of symbolic dynamics: 1. Combinatorial independence in measurable dynamics

We develop a fine-scale local analysis of measure entropy and measure sequence entropy based on combinatorial independence. The concepts of measure IE-tuples and measure IN-tuples are introduced and studied in analogy with their counterparts in topological dynamics. The Independence of p of the Lipscomb's L(A) Space Fractalized in l^{p}(A)

In one of our previous papers we proved that, for an infinite set A and p\in[1,\infty), the embedded version of the Lipscomb's space L(A) in l^{p}(A), p\in[1,\infty), with the metric induced from l^{p}(A), denoted by ω_{p}^{A}, is the attractor of an infinite iterated function system comprising affine transformations of l^{p}(A). In the present paper we point out that ω_{p}^{A}=ω_{q}^{A}, for all p,q\in[1,\infty) and, by providing a complete description of the convergent sequences from ω_{p}^{A}, we prove that the topological structure of ω_{p}^{A} is independent of p.

Algebraic independence of local conjugacies and related questions in polynomial dynamics

Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and $f\in K[t]$ a polynomial of degree $d\geq 2$. There exists a local conjugacy $ψ_f(t)\in tK[[1/t]]$ such that $ψ_f(t^d)=f(ψ_f(t))$. It has been known that $ψ_f$ is transcendental over $K(t)$ if $f$ is not conjugate to $t^d$ or a constant multiple of the Chebyshev polynomial. In this paper, we study the algebraic independence of $ψ_{f_1}$,\ldots,$ψ_{f_n}$ using a recent result of Medvedev-Scanlon. Related questions in transcendental number theory and canonical heights in arithmetic dynamics are also discussed.

The theory of filtrations of subalgebras, standardness and independence

The survey is devoted to the combinatorial and metric theory of filtrations, i.\,e., decreasing sequences of $σ$-algebras in measure spaces or decreasing sequences of subalgebras of certain algebras. One of the key notions, that of standardness, plays the role of a~generalization of the notion of the independence of a~sequence of random variables. We discuss the possibility of obtaining a~classification of filtrations, their invariants, and various links to problems in algebra, dynamics, and combinatorics.

Irregular model sets and tame dynamics

We study the dynamical properties of irregular model sets and show that the translation action on their hull always admits an infinite independence set. The dynamics can therefore not be tame and the topological sequence entropy is strictly positive. Extending the proof to a more general setting, we further obtain that tame implies regular for almost automorphic group actions on compact spaces.
