Let S_n:=a_1\vp_1+...+a_n\vp_n, where \vp_1,...,\vp_n are independent Rademacher random variables (r.v.'s) and a_1,...,a_n are any real numbers such that a_1^2+...+a_n^2=1. Let Z be a standard normal r.v. It is proved that the best constant factor c in inequality
¶(S_n>x) \leq c¶(Z>x) for all x in \R is between two explicitly defined absolute constants c_1 and c_2 such that c_1<c_2 \approx 1.01c_1.
We provide a generalisation of Pinelis' Rademacher-Gaussian tail comparison to complex coefficients. We also establish uniform bounds on the probability that the magnitude of weighted sums of independent random vectors uniform on Euclidean spheres with matrix coefficients exceeds its second moment.
We prove a dimension-free tail comparison between the Euclidean norms of sums of independent random vectors uniformly distributed in centred Euclidean spheres and properly rescaled standard Gaussian random vectors.
Andreas Maurer in the paper "A vector-contraction inequality for Rademacher complexities" extended the contraction inequality for Rademacher averages to Lipschitz functions with vector-valued domains; He did it replacing the Rademacher variables in the bounding expression by arbitrary idd symmetric and sub-gaussian variables. We will see how to extend this work when we replace sub-gaussian variables by $p$-stable variables for $1<p<2$.
In this article, we consider random Wigner matrices, that is symmetric matrices such that the subdiagonal entries of Xn are independent, centered, and with variance one except on the diagonal where the entries have variance two. We prove that, under some suitable hypotheses on the laws of the entries, the law of the largest eigenvalue satisfies a large deviation principle with the same rate function as in the Gaussian case. The crucial assumption is that the Laplace transform of the entries must be bounded above by the Laplace transform of a centered Gaussian variable with same variance. This …
In this article, we prove that in the Rademacher setting, a random vector with chaotic components is close in distribution to a centred Gaussian vector, if both the maximal influence of the associated kernel and the fourth cumulant of each component is small. In particular, we recover the univariate case recently established in Döbler and Krokowski (2017). Our main strategy consists in a novel adaption of the exchangeable pairs couplings initiated in Nourdin and Zheng (2017), as well as its combination with estimates via chaos decomposition.
It is shown that \begin{equation*} \mathsf{P}(\|a_1U_1+\dots+a_nU_n\|>u)\le c\,\mathsf{P}(a\|Z_d\|>u) \end{equation*} for all real $u$, where $U_1,\dots,U_n$ are independent random vectors uniformly distributed on the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $a_1,\dots,a_n$ are any real numbers, $a:=\sqrt{(a_1^2+\dots+a_n^2)/d}$, $Z_d$ is a standard normal random vector in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and $c=2e^3/9=4.46\dots$. This constant factor is about $89$ times as small as the one in a recent result by Nayar and Tkocz, who proved, by a different method, a corresponding conjecture by Oleszkiewicz. As an immedia…
In this paper, a simplified second-order Gaussian Poincaré inequality for normal approximation of functionals over infinitely many Rademacher random variables is derived. It is based on a new bound for the Kolmogorov distance between a general Rademacher functional and a Gaussian random variable, which is established by means of the discrete Malliavin-Stein method and is of independent interest. As an application, the number of vertices with prescribed degree and the subgraph counting statistic in the Erdös-Rényi random graph are discussed. The number of vertices of fixed degree is also studie…
We prove a Khintchine type inequality under the assumption that the sum of Rademacher random variables equals zero. As an application we show a new tail-bound for a hypergeometric random variable.
We consider the problem of detecting a deformation from a symmetric Gaussian random $p$-tensor $(p\geq 3)$ with a rank-one spike sampled from the Rademacher prior. Recently in Lesieur et al. (2017), it was proved that there exists a critical threshold $β_p$ so that when the signal-to-noise ratio exceeds $β_p$, one can distinguish the spiked and unspiked tensors and weakly recover the prior via the minimal mean-square-error method. On the other side, Perry, Wein, and Bandeira (2017) proved that there exists a $β_p'<β_p$ such that any statistical hypothesis test can not distinguish these two ten…
We derive the exponential as well as power decreasing tail estimations for normed sums of centered independent identical distributed (or not) random variables on the Khintchine's form. We consider arbitrary, in particular, non-Rademacher's variables and not only Lebesgue-Riesz rearrangement invariant norms for the random variables. We intend to calculate the value of correspondent limit.
We prove concentration inequalities for functions of independent random variables {under} sub-gaussian and sub-exponential conditions. The utility of the inequalities is demonstrated by an extension of the now classical method of Rademacher complexities to Lipschitz function classes and unbounded sub-exponential distribution.
Although there is an extensive literature on the maxima of Gaussian processes, there are relatively few non-asymptotic bounds on their lower-tail probabilities. The aim of this paper is to develop such a bound, while also allowing for many types of dependence. Let $(ξ_1,\dots,ξ_N)$ be a centered Gaussian vector with standardized entries, whose correlation matrix $R$ satisfies $\max_{i\neq j} R_{ij}\leq ρ_0$ for some constant $ρ_0\in (0,1)$. Then, for any $ε_0\in(0,\sqrt{1-ρ_0})$, we establish an upper bound on the probability $\mathbb{P}(\max_{1\leq j\leq N} ξ_j\leq ε_0\sqrt{2\log(N)})$ in ter…
In this article we consider Wigner matrices $X_N$ with variance profiles (also called Wigner-type matrices) which are of the form $X_N(i,j) = σ(i/N,j/N) a_{i,j} / \sqrt{N}$ where $σ$ is a symmetric real positive function of $[0,1]^2$ and $σ$ will be taken either continuous or piecewise constant. We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of those matrices under the same condition of sharp sub-Gaussian bound and for some other assumptions on $σ$. These sub-Gaussian bounds are verified for example for Gaussian variables, Rademacher variables or uniform variables on $[- \sqrt…
In this paper, we obtain a refined non-asymptotic tail bound for the largest singular value (the soft edge) of sub-Gaussian matrix. As an application, we use the obtained theorem to compute the tail bound of the Gaussian Toeplitz matrix.
We observe that approximate copies of the function $Λ_{n}:\mathbb{R}^{n}\rightarrow (0,\infty )$ defined by \begin{equation*} Λ_{n}(x)=\exp \left( -x_{1}-π\sum_{i=2}^{n}x_{i}^{2}\right) \end{equation*} appear in the tails of a large class of functions, with properties related to coordinate independence, convexity, homotheticity, and homogeneity. The function $Λ_{n}$ is an entropy maximizer (on a half-space) that is uniquely determined by a homogeneity condition together with rotational invariance about the $x_{1}$ direction and its behavior near the origin. These results are connected to the l…
We find the exponential exact two-terms non-asymptotic expression for the maximum and minimum distribution of a non-Gaussian, in general case, random vector.
This paper investigates an upper bound of the operator norm for sub-Gaussian tailed random matrices. A lot of attention has been put on uniformly bounded sub-Gaussian tailed random matrices with independent coefficients. However, little has been done for sub-Gaussian tailed random matrices whose matrix coefficients variance are not equal or for matrix for which coefficients are not independent. This is precisely the subject of this paper. After proving that random matrices with uniform sub-Gaussian tailed independent coefficients satisfy the Tracy Widom bound, that is, their matrix operator no…
In this article we study the tail probability of the mass of critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) associated to a general class of log-correlated Gaussian fields in any dimension, including the Gaussian free field (GFF) in dimension two. More precisely, we derive a fully explicit formula for the leading order asymptotics for the tail probability and demonstrate a new universality phenomenon. Our analysis here shares similar philosophy with the subcritical case but requires a different approach due to complications in the analogous localisation step, and we also employ techniques from r…
In this article we study the tail probability of the mass of Gaussian multiplicative chaos. With the novel use of a Tauberian argument and Goldie's implicit renewal theorem, we provide a unified approach to general log-correlated Gaussian fields in arbitrary dimension and derive precise first order asymptotics of the tail probability, resolving a conjecture of Rhodes and Vargas. The leading order is described by a universal constant that captures the generic property of Gaussian multiplicative chaos, and may be seen as the analogue of the Liouville unit volume reflection coefficients in higher…
We establish a large-deviations principle for the largest eigenvalue of a generalized sample covariance matrix, meaning a matrix proportional to $Z^T ΓZ$, where $Z$ has i.i.d. real or complex entries and $Γ$ is not necessarily the identity. We treat the classical case when $Z$ is Gaussian and $Γ$ is positive definite, but we also cover two orthogonal extensions: Either the entries of $Z$ can instead be sharp sub-Gaussian, a class including Rademacher and uniform distributions, where we find the same rate function as for the Gaussian model; or $Γ$ can have negative eigenvalues if $Z$ remains Ga…
We prove a large deviation principle for the largest eigenvalue of Wigner matrices without Gaussian tails, namely such that the distribution tails $\mathbb{P}( |X_{1,1}|>t)$ and $\mathbb{P}(|X_{1,2}|>t)$ behave like $e^{-bt^α}$ and $e^{-at^α}$ respectively for some $a,b\in (0,+\infty)$ and $α\in (0,2)$. The large deviation principle is of speed $N^{α/2}$ and with a good rate function depending only on the tail distribution of the entries.
We show bounds on tail probabilities for quadratic forms in sub-gaussian non-necessarily independent random variables. Our main tool will be estimates of the Luxemburg norms of such forms. This will allow us to formulate the above-mentioned bounds. As an example we give estimates of the excess loss in fixed design linear regression in dependent observations.
We provide a very simple argument showing that the $Φ^4_3$ measure does have quartic exponential tails, as expected from its formal expression. This shows that the corresponding moment problem is well-posed and provides a simple path to observing non-Gaussianity of the measure.
This is the first of a three paper series in which we present a comprehensive study of the extreme value theory of the scale-inhomogeneous discrete Gaussian free field. This model was introduced by Arguin and Ouimet who computed the first order of the maximum. In this first paper we establish tail estimates for the maximum value, which allow to deduce the log-correction to the order of the maximum and tightness of the centred maximum. Our proofs are based on the second moment method and Gaussian comparison techniques.
In this paper, we discuss the convergence rate of empirical processes of Gaussian processes for a large class of function families. Our main goal is to show that the tail of the uniform norm of the empirical processes can be dominated by polynomials. We put forward the properties of Hermite polynomials which play a crucial role in the proof of main theorems. At the end of the paper, we show the expectation of the random quantity converging to zero at a more rapid rate n^{-1/2+ε} than ever shown rate n^{-1/3}.
We show that the tail probability of the rough line integral $\int_{0}^{1}ϕ(X_{t})dY_{t}$, where $(X,Y)$ is a 2D fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter $H\in(1/4,1/2)$ and $ϕ$ is a $C_{b}^{\infty}$-function satisfying a mild non-degeneracy condition on its derivative, cannot decay faster than a $γ$-Weibull tail with any exponent $γ>2H+1$. In particular, this produces a simple class of examples of differential equations driven by fBM, whose solutions fail to have Gaussian tail even though the underlying vector fields are assumed to be of class $C_{b}^{\infty}$. This also demonstrates t…
The dominant pole approximation (DPA) is a classical analytic method to obtain from a generating function asymptotic estimates for its underlying coefficients. We apply DPA to a discrete queue in a critical many-sources regime, in order to obtain tail asymptotics for the stationary queue length. As it turns out, this regime leads to a clustering of the poles of the generating function, which renders the classical DPA useless, since the dominant pole is not sufficiently dominant. To resolve this, we design a new DPA method, which might also find application in other areas of mathematics, like c…
