Let $K\to L$ be an algebraic field extension and $ν$ a valuation of $K$. The purpose of this paper is to describe the totality of extensions $\left\{ν'\right\}$ of $ν$ to $L$ using a refined version of MacLane's key polynomials. In the basic case when $L$ is a finite separable extension and $rk ν=1$, we give an explicit description of the limit key polynomials (which can be viewed as a generalization of the Artin--Schreier polynomials). We also give a realistic upper bound on the order type of the set of key polynomials. Namely, we show that if $char K=0$ then the set of key polynomials has order type at most $\mathbb N$, while in the case $char K=p>0$ this order type is bounded above by $([\log_pn]+1)ω$, where $n=[L:K]$. Our results provide a new point of view of the the well known formula $\sum\limits_{j=1}^se_jf_jd_j=n$ and the notion of defect.
This article is a natural construction of our previous works. In this article, we employ similar ideas due to MacLane to provide an estimate of IC(K(X)|K,v) when (K(X)|K,v) is a valuation algebraic extension. Our central result is an analogue of the estimate obtained in the valuation transcendental case. We further provide a natural construction of a complete sequence of key polynomials for v over K in the setting of valuation algebraic extensions.
Let $K$ be a characteristic zero algebraic function field with a valuation $ν$. Let $L$ be a finite extension of $K$ and $ω$ be an extension of $ν$ to $L$. We establish that the valuation ring $V_ω$ of $ω$ is essentially finitely generated over the valuation ring $V_ν$ of $ν$ if and only if the initial index $ε(ω|ν)$ is equal to the ramification index $e(ω|ν)$ of the extension. This gives a positive answer, for characteristic zero algebraic function fields, to a question posed by Hagen Knaf.

Suppose that R\rightarrow S is an extension of local domains and ν^* is a valuation dominating S. We consider the natural extension of associated graded rings along the valuation gr_{ν^*}(R)\rightarrow gr_{ν^*}(S). We give examples showing that in general, this extension does not share good properties of the extension $\rightarrow S, but after enough blow ups above the valuations, good properties of the extension R\rightarrow S are reflected in the extension of associated graded rings. Stable properties of this extension (after blowing up) are much better in characteristic zero than in positiv…
Suppose that $k$ is an arbitrary field. Consider the field $k((x_1,...,x_n))$, which is the quotient field of the ring $k[[x_1,...,x_n]]$ of formal power series in the variables $x_1,...,x_n$, with coefficients in $k$. Suppose that $σ$ is a formal power series in $x_1,...,x_n$ with coefficints in the algebraic closure of $k$. We give a very simple necessary and sufficient condition for $σ$ to be algebraic over $k((x_1,...,x_n))$. As an application of our methods, we give a characterization of valuation rings $V$ which dominate an excellent, Noetherian local domain $R$ of dimension two, and suc…
We show that if $R$ is a local domain which is dominated by a valuation $ν$, then there does not always exist a regular local ring $R'$ which birationally dominates R and is dominated by $ν$ and an extension of $ν$ to the Henselization $(R')^h$ of $R'$ such that the associated graded rings of $R'$ and $(R')^h$ along the valuations are equal. We also show that there does not always exist $R'$, a prime ideal $p$ of the completion $\widehat{R'}$ such that $p\cap R'=(0)$ and an extension of $ν$ to $\widehat{R'}$ such that the associated graded rings of $R'$ and $\widehat{R'}/p$ along the valuation…
In this paper we consider the question of when the associated graded ring along a valuation, ${\rm gr}_{ν^*}(S)$, is a finite ${\rm gr}_{ν^*}(R)$-module, where $S$ is a normal local ring which lies over a normal local ring $R$ and $ν^*$ is a valuation of the quotient field of $S$ which dominates $S$. We obtain a very general result in equicharacteristic zero in Theorem 1.5. We also obtain general results for unramified extensions of excellent local rings in Proposition 1.7.
Suppose that $R$ is a local domain essentially of finite type over a field of characteristic 0, and $ν$ a valuation of the quotient field of $R$ which dominates $R$. The rank of such a valuation often increases upon extending the valuation to a valuation dominating $\hat R$, the completion of $R$. When the rank of $ν$ is 1, Cutkosky and Ghezzi handle this phenomenon by resolving the prime ideal of infinite value, but give an example showing that when the rank is greater than 1, there is no natural ideal in $\hat R$ that leads to this obstruction. We extend their result on the resolution of pri…
We study algebraic discrete valuations dominating normal local domains of dimension two. We construct a family of examples to show that the Hilbert-Samuel function of the associated graded ring of the valuation can fail to be asymptotically of the form: quasi-polynomial plus a bounded function. We also show that the associated multiplicity can be irrational, or even transcendental.
Given a valuation ring $V$, with residue field $F$ and value group $Γ$, we give a sufficient condition…
Let k be a field of characteristic zero, K an algebraic function field over k, and V a k-valuation ring of K. Zariski's theorem of local uniformization shows that there exist algebraic regular local rings R_i with quotient field K which are dominated by V, and such that the direct union of the R_i's is V. We investigate the ring T, which is the direct union of the completions of the R_i's. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for T to be a valuation ring. We then focus on the case in which the valuation has rank one.
We extend Greenberg's strong approximation theorem to schemes of finite presentation over valuation rings with arbitrary value group, using the ultraproduct method of Becker, Denef, Lipshitz and van den Dries. As an application, we prove a closed image theorem (in the strong topology on rational points) for proper morphisms of varieties over valued fields.
Let $(K, ν)$ be a valued field, the notions of \emph{augmented valuation}, of \emph{limit augmented valuation} and of \emph{admissible family} of valuations enable to give a description of any valuation $μ$ of $K [x]$ extending $ν$. In the case where the field $K$ is algebraically closed, this description is particularly simple and we can reduce it to the notions of \emph{minimal pair} and \emph{pseudo-convergent family}. Let $(K, ν)$ be a henselian valued field and $\barν$ the unique extension of $ν$ to the algebraic closure $\bar K$ of $K$ and let $μ$ be a valuation of $ K [x]$ extending $ν$…
In this paper we consider birational properties of ramification in excellent local rings. We extend earlier results of the author with Olivier Piltant to show that strong local monomialization is true along a valuation dominating a defectless extension of two dimensional excellent local rings. We also obtain general results on the structure of the extension of associated graded rings along a valuation, and show that the invariants alpha and beta of stable forms of two dimensional extensions in characteristic p of the author and Olivier Piltant are not eventually constant.
We describe the immediate extensions of a one dimensional valuation ring $V$ which could be embedded in some separation of a ultrapower of $V$ with respect to a certain ultrafilter. For such extensions holds a kind of Artin's approximation.
In this paper we use the theory of multiplier ideals to show that the valuation ideals of a rank one Abhyankar valuation centered at a smooth point of a complex algebraic variety are approximated, in a quite strong sense, by sequences of powers of fixed ideals. Fix a rank one valuation v centered at a smooth point x on an algebraic variety over a field of characteristic zero. Assume that v is Abhyankar, that is, that its rational rank plus its transcendence degree equal the dimension of the variety. Let a_m denote the ideal of elements in the local ring of x whose valuations are at least m. Ou…
The notion of key polynomials was first introduced in 1936 by S. Maclane in the case of discrete rank 1 valuations. . Let K -> L be a field extension and ν a valuation of K. The original motivation for introducing key polynomials was the problem of describing all the extensions μ of ν to L. Take a valuation μ of L extending the valuation ν. In the case when ν is discrete of rank 1 and L is a simple algebraic extension of K Maclane introduced the notions of key polynomials for μ and augmented valuations and proved that μ is obtained as a limit of a family of augmented valuations on the polynomi…
We investigate valued fields which admit a valuation basis. Given a countable ordered abelian group G and a real closed, or algebraically closed field F, we give a sufficient condition for a valued subfield of the field of generalized power series F((G)) to admit a K-valuation basis. We show that the field of rational functions F(G) and the field F(G) of power series in F((G)) algebraic over F(G) satisfy this condition. It follows that for archimedean F and divisible G the real closed field F(G) admits a restricted exponential function.
We prove local uniformization of Abhyankar valuations of an algebraic function field K over a ground field k. Our result generalizes the proof of this result, with the additional assumption that the residue field of the valuation ring is separable over k, by Hagen Knaf and Franz-Viktor Kuhlmann. The proof in this paper uses different methods, being inspired by the approach of Zariski and Abhyankar.
We give a first-order definition of key polynomials, we show the links with previous definitions, that it is relevant to study key degrees, and to use a kind of valuations that we call partially multiplicative. We also prove or reprove several properties.
Extension of valuation rings as limits of complete intersection algebras

We introduce the notion of {\it approximation type} for the partial, and in certain cases the total description of extensions of a given valuation from a field $K$ to the rational function field $K(x)$. To every extension, a unique approximation type of $x$ over $K$ is associated, while $x$ may be the limit of many pseudo Cauchy sequences. Approximation types also provide information in cases where the extensions are not immediate, and we prove that they correspond bijectively to the extensions when $K$ is algebraically closed or lies dense in its algebraic closure.
In this article we further develop the theory of valuation independence and study its relation with classical notions in valuation theory such as immediate and defectless extensions. We use this general theory to settle two open questions regarding vector space defectless extensions of valued fields. Additionally, we provide a characterization of such extensions within various classes of valued fields, extending results of Françoise Delon.
Given a valued field $(K,v)$ and a pseudo monotone sequence $E$ in $(K,v)$, one has an induced valuation $v_E$ extending $v$ to $K(X)$. After fixing an extension of $v_E$ to a fixed algebraic closure $\overline{K(X)}$ of $K(X)$, we show that the implicit constant field of the extension $(K(X)|K,v_E)$ is simply the henselization of $(K,v)$. We consider the question: given a value transcendental extension $w$ of $v$ to $K(X)$ and a pseudo monotone sequence $E$ in $(K,v)$, under which precise conditions is $w$ induced by $E$? The dual nature of pseudo convergent sequences of algebraic type and ps…
The main goal of this paper is to study some properties of an extension of valuations from classical invariants. More specifically, we consider a valued field $(K,ν)$ and an extension $ω$ of $ν$ to a finite extension $L$ of $K$. Then we study when the valuation ring of $ω$ is essentially finitely generated over the valuation ring of $ν$. We present a necessary condition in terms of classic invariants of the extension by Hagen Knaf and show that in some particular cases, this condition is also sufficient. We also study when the corresponding extension of graded algebras is finitely generated. F…
In this paper we discuss stable forms of extensions of algebraic local rings along a valuation in all dimensions over a field k of characteristic zero, and generalize a formula of Ghezzi, Hà and Kashcheyeva describing the extension of associated graded rings along the valuation for stable extensions of regular algebraic local rings of dimension two to arbitrary ground fields k of characteristic zero. We discuss the failure of this result in positive characteristic.
In this paper, for a valued field $(K, v)$ of arbitrary rank and an extension $w$ of $v$ to $K(X),$ we give a connection between complete sets of ABKPs for $w$ and MacLane-Vaquié chains of $w.$
Birational properites of generically finite morphisms $X\rightarrow Y$ of algebraic varieties can be understood locally by a valuation of the function field of $X$. In finite extensions of algebraic local rings in characteristic zero algebraic function fields which are dominated by a valuation there are nice monomial forms of the mapping after blowing up enough, which reflect classical invariants of the valuation. Further, these forms are stable upon suitable further blowing up. In positive characteristic algebraic function fields it is not always possible to find a monomial form after blowing…
Suppose that $R$ is a 2 dimensional excellent local domain with quotient field $K$, $K^*$ is a finite separable extension of $K$ and $S$ is a 2 dimensional local domain with quotient field $K^*$ such that $S$ dominates $R$. Suppose that $ν^*$ is a valuation of $K^*$ such that $ν^*$ dominates $S$. Let $ν$ be the restriction of $ν^*$ to $K$. The associated graded ring ${\rm gr}_ν(R)$ was introduced by Bernard Teissier. It plays an important role in local uniformization. We show that the extension $(K,ν)\rightarrow (K^*,ν^*)$ of valued fields is without defect if and only if there exist regular l…
The ruled residue theorem characterises residue field extensions for valuations on a rational function field. Under the assumption that the characteristic of the residue field is different from $2$ this theorem is extended here to function fields of conics. The main result is that there is at most one extension of a valuation from on the base field to the function field of a conic for which the residue field extension is transcendental but not ruled. Furthermore the situation when this valuation is present is characterised.
Zariski's local uniformization, a weak form of resolution of singularities, implies that every valuation ring containing $\bf Q$ is a filtered direct limit of smooth $\bf Q$-algebras. Given an immediate extension of valuation rings $V\subset V'$ containing $\bf Q$ we show that $V'$ is a filtered direct limit of smooth $V$-algebras. This corrects a paper of us \cite{Po1} where we thought that we may reduce to the case when the value groups are finitely generated. For this correction we use an infinite tower of ultrapowers construction that rests on results from model theory. .
For a certain field $K$, we construct a valuation-algebraic valuation on the polynomial ring $K[x]$, whose Maclane--Vaquié chain consists of an infinite (countable) number of limit augmentations
We construct algebraically closed fields containing an algebraic closure of the field of power series in several variables over a characteristic zero field. Each of these fields depends on the choice of an Abhyankar valuation and are constructed via the Newton-Puiseux method. Then we study more carefully the case of monomial valuations and we give a result generalizing the Abhyankar-Jung Theorem for monic polynomials whose discriminant is weighted homogeneous.
Suppose $F$ is a field with valuation $v$ and valuation ring $O_{v}$, $E$ is a finite field extension and $w$ is a quasi-valuation on $E$ extending $v$. We study quasi-valuations on $E$ that extend $v$; in particular, their corresponding rings and their prime spectrums. We prove that these ring extensions satisfy INC (incomparability), LO (lying over), and GD (going down) over $O_{v}$; in particular, they have the same Krull Dimension. We also prove that every such quasi-valuation is dominated by some valuation extending $v$. Under the assumption that the value monoid of the quasi-valuation is…
We prove that every non-trivial valuation on an infinite superrosy field of positive characteristic has divisible value group and algebraically closed residue field. In fact, we prove the following more general result. Let $K$ be a field such that for every finite extension $L$ of $K$ and for every natural number $n>0$ the index $[L^*:(L^*)^n]$ is finite and, if $char(K)=p>0$ and $f: L \to L$ is given by $f(x)=x^p-x$, the index $[L^+:f[L]]$ is also finite. Then either there is a non-trivial definable valuation on $K$, or every non-trivial valuation on $K$ has divisible value group and, if $cha…
Let $(K,v)$ be a valued field. We review some results of MacLane and Vaquié on extensions of $v$ to valuations on the polynomial ring $K[x]$. We introduce certain MacLane-Vaquié chains of residually transcendental valuations, and we prove that every valuation $μ$ on $K[x]$ is a limit of a finite or countably infinite MacLane-Vaquié chain. This chain underlying $μ$ is essentially unique and contains arithmetic data yielding an explicit description of the graded algebra of $μ$ as an algebra over the graded algebra of $v$.
Let K be a field with a valuation $ν$ and let L = K(x) be a transcendental extension of K, then any valuation $μ$ of L which extends $ν$ is determined by its restriction to the polynomial ring K[x]. We know how to associate to this valuation $μ$ a family of valuations A = ($μ$i)i$\in$I of K[x], called the associated admise family, which converges in a certain sense towards the valuation $μ$. Although the definition of this family, as well as the notion of convergence, essentially imply the structure of the polynomial ring, in particular the degree of polynomials, we show in this note that the …
A cancellative commutative monoid is atomic if every non-invertible element factors into irreducibles. Under certain mild conditions on a positive algebraic number $α$, the additive monoid $M_α$ of the evaluation semiring $\mathbb{N}_0[α]$ is atomic. The atomic structure of both the additive and the multiplicative monoids of $\mathbb{N}_0[α]$ has been the subject of several recent papers. Here we focus on the monoids $M_α$, and we study its omega-primality and elasticity, aiming to better understand some fundamental questions about their atomic decompositions. We prove that when $α$ is less th…
Minimal pairs of definition were introduced by Alexandru, Popescu and Zaharescu to study residue transcendental extensions. In this paper we obtain analogous results in the value transcendental case. We introduce the notion of minimal fields of definition for valuation transcendental extensions and show that they share some common ramification theoretic properties. The connection between minimal fields of definition and implicit constant fields is also investigated. Further, we explore the relationship between valuation transcendental extensions and pseudo-Cauchy sequences.

Suppose that (K, $ν$) is a valued field, f (z) $\in$ K[z] is a unitary and irreducible polynomial and (L, $ω$) is an extension of valued fields, where L = K[z]/(f (z)). Further suppose that A is a local domain with quotient field K such that $ν$ has nonnegative value on A and positive value on its maximal ideal, and that f (z) is in A[z]. This paper is devoted to the problem of describing the structure of the associated graded ring gr $ω$ A[z]/(f (z)) of A[z]/(f (z)) for the filtration defined by $ω$ as an extension of the associated graded ring of A for the filtration defined by $ν$. In parti…
We consider the question of when a semigroup is the semigroup of a valuation dominating a two dimensional noetherian local domain, giving some surprising examples. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the pair of a semigroup S and a field extension L/k to be the semigroup and residue field of a valaution dominating a regular local ring R of dimension two with residue field k, generalizing the theorem of Spivakovsky for the case when there is no residue field extension.
We give a short argument why the tensor product valuation on $K \otimes_k L$ is multiplicative when $k$ is an algebraically closed valued field and $K$ and $L$ are valued extensions (all valuations being in $\bR$). When the valuation on $k$ is non trivial we use the fact that $ACVF$, the theory of algebraically closed (non trivially) valued fields, has quantifier elimination.
In this paper, we study the structure of the graded ring associated to a limit key polynomial $Q_n$ in terms of the key polynomials that define $Q_n$. In order to do that, we use direct limits. In general, we describe the direct limit of a family of graded rings associated to a totally ordered set of valuations. As an example, we describe the graded ring associated to a valuation-algebraic valuation as a direct limit of graded rings associated to residue-transcendental valuations.
