We study the normalization of a monomial ideal, and show how to compute its Hilbert function (using Ehrhart polynomials) if the ideal is zero dimensional. A positive lower bound for the second coefficient of the Hilbert polynomial is shown.
Let $R=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and let $M_{n,t}=(x^{e_1},\ldots, x^{e_n})$ be a monomial ideal of $R$, where $x^{e_i}=x_1^t\ldots x_{i-1}^tx_{i+1}^t\ldots x_n^t$. We study the unmixedness of its integral closure. Furthermore, we compute the Hilbert series of this ideal and we show that this ideal is Freiman.
In [7] we obtained a formula for the Hilbert depth of squarefree Veronese ideals in a standard graded polynomial ring by relating it to the Hilbert depth of powers of the irrelevant maximal ideal. In this paper, we prove that these two Hilbert depth formulas are equivalent to each other. Our result reveals that there is a strong connection between these two classes of seemingly unrelated monomial ideals. We conjecture that their Stanley depths are equivalent as well.
For a graph G, we construct two algebras, whose dimensions are both equal to the number of spanning trees of G. One of these algebras is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain monomial ideal, while the other is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain powers of linear forms. We describe the set of monomials that forms a linear basis in each of these two algebras. The basis elements correspond to G-parking functions that naturally came up in the abelian sandpile model. These ideals are instances of the general class of monotone monomial ideals and their deformations. We sh…
In this article, by using the technique of gluing semigroups, we give infinitely many families of 1-dimensional local rings with non-decreasing Hilbert functions. More significantly, these are local rings whose associated graded rings are not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay. In this sense, we give an effective technique to construct large families of 1-dimensional Gorenstein local rings associated to monomial curves, which support Rossi's conjecture saying that every Gorenstein local ring has non-decreasing Hilbert function.
We give a new proof of Hilbert's Syzygy Theorem for monomial ideals. In addition, we prove the following. If S=k[x_1,...,x_n] is a polynomial ring over a field, M is a squarefree monomial ideal in S, and each minimal generator of M has degree larger than i, then the projective dimension of S/M is at most n-i.
We study the multigraded Poincaré-Betti series of $A=S/\aaf$, where $S$ is the ring of polynomials in $n$ indeterminates divided by the monomial ideal $\aaf$. There is a conjecture about the multigraded Poincaré-Betti series by Charalambous and Reeves which they proved in the case, where the Taylor resolution is minimal. We introduce a conjecture about the minimal $A$-free resolution of the residue class field and show that this conjecture implies the conjecture of Charalambous and Reeves. We prove our conjecture for several classes of algebras. The conjecture implies that $A$ is Golod if and …
The equivariant Hilbert series of an ideal generated by an orbit of a monomial under the action of the monoid $\mbox{Inc}(\mathbb{N})$ of strictly increasing functions is determined. This is used to find the dimension and degree of such an ideal. The result also suggests that the description of the denominator of an equivariant Hilbert series of an arbitrary $\mbox{Inc}(\mathbb{N})$-invariant ideal as given by Nagel and Römer is rather efficient.
In this paper we study the Hilbert function of $\gr_{\mathfrak{m}}(R)$, when $R$ is a numerical semigroup ring or, equivalently, the coordinate ring of a monomial curve. In particular, we prove a sufficient condition for a numerical semigroup ring in order get a non-decreasing Hilbert function, without making any assumption on its embedding dimension; moreover, we show how this new condition allows to improve known results about this problem. To this aim we use certain invariants of the semigroup, with particular regard to its \Apery-set.
Using linear algebra methods we study certain algebraic properties of monomial rings and matroids. Let I be a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring over an arbitrary field. If the Rees cone of I is quasi-ideal, we express the normalization of the Rees algebra of I in terms of an Ehrhart ring. We introduce the basis Rees cone of a matroid (or a polymatroid) and study their facets. Some applications to Rees algebras are presented. It is shown that the basis monomial ideal of a matroid (or a polymatroid) is normal.
Let $I\subset S=\KK[x_1,...,x_n]$ be a lexsegment ideal, generated by monomials of degree $d$. The main aim of this paper is to characterize when the Hilbert depth of $I$ will be 1, in the standard graded case. In addition to this, we will give an estimate of depth of squarefree monomial ideals, generalizing a result of Popescu. We will also show that Stanley conjecture holds for squarefree stable ideals, in the multigraded case.
We study the weak Lefschetz property and the Hilbert function of level Artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables. Several such families are shown to have the weak Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is zero or greater than the maximal degree of any minimal generator of the ideal. Two of the families have an interesting relation to tilings of hexagons by lozenges. This lends further evidence to a conjecture by Migliore, Miro-Roig, and the second author. Finally, using our results about the weak Lefschetz property, we show that the Hilbert function…
In this paper we present a procedure for computing the rational sum of the Hilbert series of a finitely generated monomial right module $N$ over the free associative algebra $K\langle x_1,\ldots,x_n \rangle$. We show that such procedure terminates, that is, the rational sum exists, when all the cyclic submodules decomposing $N$ are annihilated by monomial right ideals whose monomials define regular formal languages. The method is based on the iterative application of the colon right ideal operation to monomial ideals which are given by an eventual infinite basis. By using automata theory, we p…
The aim of this note is to exploit a new relationship between additive combinatorics and the geometry of monomial projective curves. We associate to a finite set of non-negative integers $A=\{a_1,\cdots, a_n\}$ a monomial projective curve $C_A\subset \mathbb P^{n-1}_{k}$ such that the Hilbert function of $C_A$ and the cardinalities of $sA:=\{a_{i_1}+\cdots+a_{i_s}\mid 1\le i_1\le \cdots \le i_s\le n\}$ agree. The singularities of $C_A$ determines the asymptotic behaviour of $|sA|$, equivalently the Hilbert polynomial of $C_A$, and the asymptotic structure of $sA$. We show that some additive in…
Let $k$ be a commutative ring and $S=k[x_0, \ldots, x_n]$ be a polynomial ring over $k$ with a monomial order. For any monomial ideal $J$, there exists an affine $k$-scheme of finite type, called Gröbner scheme, which parameterizes all homogeneous reduced Gröbner bases in $S$ whose initial ideal is $J$. Here we functorially show that the Gröbner scheme is a locally closed subscheme of the Hilbert scheme if $J$ is a saturated ideal. In the process, we also show that the Gröbner scheme consists of complete intersections if $J$ defines a complete intersection.
We prove a characterization of the j-multiplicity of a monomial ideal as the normalized volume of a polytopal complex. Our result is an extension of Teissier's volume-theoretic interpretation of the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity for m-primary monomial ideals. We also give a description of the epsilon-multiplicity of a monomial ideal in terms of the volume of a region.
Determining whether an arbitrary subring $R$ of $k[x_1^{\pm 1},\dots, x_n^{\pm 1}]$ is a normal domain is, in general, a nontrivial problem, even in the special case of a monomial generated domain. In this paper, we provide a complete characterization of the normality and normalizations of quadratic-monomial generated domains. For a quadratic-monomial generated domain $R$, we develop a combinatorial structure that assigns, to each quadratic monomial of the ring, an edge in a mixed signed, directed graph $G$, i.e., a graph with signed edges and directed edges. We classify the normality and the …
Let $M$ be an ideal in $K[x_1,...,x_n]$ ($K$ is a field) generated by products of linear forms and containing a homogeneous regular sequence of some length. We prove that ideals containing $M$ satisfy the Eisenbud-Green-Harris conjecture and moreover prove that the Cohen-Macaulay property is preserved. We conclude that monomial ideals satisfy this conjecture. We obtain that $h$-vector of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex $Δ$ is the $h$-vector of Cohen-Macaulay $(a_1-1,...,a_t-1)$-balanced simplicial complex where $t$ is the height of the Stanley-Reisner ideal of $Δ$ and $(a_1,...,a_t)$ is the …
Let k be an algebraically closed field. We study the cotangent space of a point t corresponding to a monomial ideal I of k[x_1, ..., x_r] in the Hilbert scheme of n points of affine r-space (so the k-dimension of k[x_1, ..., x_r]/I = colength of I = n). Since t lies in the closure of the locus corresponding to subschemes supported at n distinct points of A^r_k, one knows that the k-dimension of the cotangent space is always >= r*n, and that t is nonsingular if and only if the dimension equals r*n. We construct an explicit linearly independent set S of cotangent vectors of size r*n, and then ex…
In this article, standard bases of some toric ideals associated to 4-generated pseudo symmetric semigroups with not Cohen-Macaulay tangent cones at the origin are computed. As the tangent cones are not Cohen-Macaulay, non-decreasingness of the Hilbert function of the local ring was not guaranteed. Therefore, using these standard bases, Hilbert functions are explicitly computed as a step towards the characterization of Hilbert function. In addition, when the smallest integer satisfying $k(α_2+1)<(k-1)α_1+(k+1)α_{21}+α_3$ is $1$, it is proved that the Hilbert function of the local ring is non-de…
Koszul homology of monomial ideals provides a description of the structure of such ideals, not only from a homological point of view (free resolutions, Betti numbers, Hilbert series) but also from an algebraic viewpoint. In this paper we show that, in particular, the homology at degree (n-1), with n the number of indeterminates of the ring, plays an important role for this algebraic description in terms of Stanley and irreducible decompositions.
We continue the study of intersection algebras $\mathcal B = \mathcal B_R(I, J)$ of two ideals $I, J$ in a commutative Noetherian ring $R$. In particular, we exploit the semigroup ring and toric structures in order to calculate various invariants of the intersection algebra when $R$ is a polynomial ring over a field and $I,J$ are principal monomial ideals. Specifically, we calculate the $F$-signature, divisor class group, and Hilbert-Samuel and Hilbert-Kunz multiplicities, sometimes restricting to certain cases in order to obtain explicit formulæ. This provides a new class of rings where formu…
In this paper we study monomial multiple structures on a linear subspace of codimension two in projective space. We show that these structures determine smooth points in their respective Hilbert schemes, with (smooth) neighbourhoods of two such points intersecting if their Hilbert functions are equal. We generalize a construction for multiple structures on points in the plane to this setting, giving a kind of product of monomial multiple structures.
We compute the reduced Gröbner basis of the toric ideal with respect to a suitable monomial order and we study the Hilbert series of the vertex cover algebra $A(G)$, where $G$ is an unmixed bipartite graph without isolated vertices.
The present paper studies multiple failure and signature analysis of coherent systems using the theory of monomial ideals. While system reliability has been studied using Hilbert series of monomial ideals, this is not enough to understand in a deeper sense the ideal structure features that reflect the behavior of the system under multiple simultaneous failures and signature. Therefore, we introduce the lcm-filtration of a monomial ideal, and we study the Hilbert series and resolutions of the corresponding ideals. Given a monomial ideal, we explicitly compute the resolutions for all ideals in t…
Monomial ideals and toric rings are closely related. By consider a Grobner basis we can always associated to any ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring a monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$, in some special situations the monomial ideal ${\rm in}_\prec I$ is square free. On the other hand given any monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $S$, we can define the toric $K[I]\subset S$. In this paper we will study toric rings defined by Segre embeddings, we will prove that their $h-$ vectors coincides with the so called Simon Newcomb number's in probabilities and combinatorics. We solve the original questio…
The Hilbert series of local cohomologies for monomial ideals, which are not necessarily square-free, is established. As applications, we give a sharp lower bound of the non-vanishing degree of local cohomologies and also a sharp lower bound of the positive integer k of k-Buchsbaumness for generalized Cohen-Macaulay monomial ideals.
We use cellular resolutions of monomial ideals to prove an analog of Hilbert's syzygy theorem for virtual resolutions of monomial ideals on smooth toric varieties.
We study the set of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring as an ordered set, with the ordering given by reverse inclusion. We give a short proof of the fact that every antichain of monomial ideals is finite. Then we investigate ordinal invariants for the complexity of this ordered set. In particular, we give an interpretation of the height function in terms of the Hilbert-Samuel polynomial, and we compute upper and lower bounds on the maximal order type.
The properties of the intersection algebra of two principal monomial ideals in a polynomial ring are investigated in detail. Results are obtained regarding the Hilbert series and the canonical ideal of the intersection algebra using methods from the theory of diophantine linear equations with integer coefficients.
In the present paper, we characterize all possible Hilbert functions of graded ideals in a polynomial ring whose regularity is smaller than or equal to $d$, where $d$ is a positive integer. In addition, we prove the following result which is a generalization of Bigatti, Hulett and Pardue's result: Let $p \geq 0$ and $d>0$ be integers. If the base field is a field of characteristic 0 and there is a graded ideal $I$ whose projective dimension $\mathrm{proj\ dim}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $p$ and whose regularity $\mathrm{reg}(I)$ is smaller than or equal to $d$, then there exists a monomia…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of a Klyachko diagram for a monomial ideal $I$ in a certain multi-graded polynomial ring, namely the Cox ring $R$ of a smooth complete toric variety, with irrelevant maximal ideal $B$. We present procedures to compute the Klyachko diagram of $I$ from its monomial generators, and to retrieve the $B-$saturation $I^{\mathrm{sat}}$ of $I$ from its Klyachko diagram. We use this description to compute the first local cohomology module $H^{1}_{B}(I)$. As an application, we find a formula for the Hilbert function of $I^{\mathrm{sat}}$, and a characterization of m…
Inspired by the study of random graphs and simplicial complexes, and motivated by the need to understand average behavior of ideals, we propose and study probabilistic models of random monomial ideals. We prove theorems about the probability distributions, expectations and thresholds for events involving monomial ideals with given Hilbert function, Krull dimension, first graded Betti numbers, and present several experimentally-backed conjectures about regularity, projective dimension, strong genericity, and Cohen-Macaulayness of random monomial ideals.
There is a natural infinite graph whose vertices are the monomial ideals in a polynomial ring. The definition involves Gröbner bases or the action of an algebraic torus. We present algorithms for computing the (affine schemes representing) edges in this graph. We study the induced subgraphs on multigraded Hilbert schemes and on square-free monomial ideals. In the latter case, the edges correspond to generalized bistellar flips.
We give conditions for determining the extremal behavior for the (graded) Betti numbers of squarefree monomial ideals. For the case of non-unique minima, we give several conditions which we use to produce infinite families, exponentially growing with dimension, of Hilbert functions which have no smallest (graded) Betti numbers among squarefree monomial ideals and all ideals. For the case of unique minima, we give two families of Hilbert functions, one with exponential and one with linear growth as dimension grows, that have unique minimal Betti numbers among squarefree monomial ideals.
We study the generic initial ideals (gin) of certain ideals that arise in modular invariant theory. For all cases an explicit generating set is known we calculate the generic initial ideal of the Hilbert ideal of a cyclic group of prime order for all monomial orders. We also clarify the Klein four group and note that its Hilbert ideals are Borel fixed with certain orderings of the variables. In all situations we consider, there is a monomial order such that the gin of the Hilbert ideal is equal to its initial ideal. Along the way we show that gin respects a permutation of the variables in the …
We present a new algorithm to compute the integral closure of a reduced Noetherian ring in its total ring of fractions. A modification, applicable in positive characteristic, where actually all computations are over the original ring, is also described. The new algorithm of this paper has been implemented in Singular, for localizations of affine rings with respect to arbitrary monomial orderings. Benchmark tests show that it is in general much faster than any other implementation of normalization algorithms known to us.
Hilbert functions over the exterior algebra and f-vectors in higher rank I: Amata-Crupi monomial modules, Kozlov polytopes, and r-vectors of simplicial complexes
In this paper we study irreducible representations and symbolic Rees algebras of monomial ideals. Then we examine edge ideals associated to vertex-weighted oriented graphs. These are digraphs having no oriented cycles of length two with weights on the vertices. For a monomial ideal with no embedded primes we classify the normality of its symbolic Rees algebra in terms of its primary components. If the primary components of a monomial ideal are normal, we present a simple procedure to compute its symbolic Rees algebra using Hilbert bases, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equ…
Given an ideal $I$ and a weight vector $w$ which partially orders monomials we can consider the initial ideal $\init_w (I)$ which has the same Hilbert function. A well known construction carries this out via a one-parameter subgroup of a $\GL_{n+1}$ which can then be viewed as a curve on the corresponding Hilbert scheme. Galligo \cite{galligo} proved that if $I$ is in generic coordinates, and if $w$ induces a monomial order up to a large enough degree, then $\init_w(I)$ is fixed by the action of the Borel subgroup of upper-triangular matrices. We prove that the direction the path approaches th…
Let $R = K[x_1, x_2, x_3, x_4]$ be the polynomial ring over a field of characteristic zero. For the ideal $(x_1^a, x_2^b, x_3^c, x_4^d) \subset R$, where at least one of $a$, $b$, $c$ and $d$ is equal to two, we prove that its generic initial ideal with respect to the reverse lexicographic order is the almost revlex ideal corresponding to the same Hilbert function.
Each partition $λ= (λ_1, λ_2, ..., λ_n)$ determines a so-called Ferrers tableau or, equivalently, a Ferrers bipartite graph. Its edge ideal, dubbed Ferrers ideal, is a squarefree monomial ideal that is generated by quadrics. We show that such an ideal has a 2-linear minimal free resolution, i.e. it defines a small subscheme. In fact, we prove that this property characterizes Ferrers graphs among bipartite graphs. Furthermore, using a method of Bayer and Sturmfels, we provide an explicit description of the maps in its minimal free resolution: This is obtained by associating a suitable polyhedra…
Let $I$ be a regular $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal in $(R,\mathfrak m,k)$. Then the Ratliff-Rush ideal associated to $I$ is denoted by $\bar I$ and is defined as the largest ideal containing $I$ with the same Hilbert polynomial as $I$. In this paper we present a method to compute Ratliff-Rush ideals for a certain class of monomial ideals in the rings $k[x,y]$ and $k[[x,y]]$. We find an upper bound for the Ratliff-Rush reduction number for an ideal in this class. Moreover, we establish some new characterizations of when all powers of $I$ are Ratliff-Rush.
We determine a sharp lower bound for the Hilbert function in degree $d$ of a monomial algebra failing the weak Lefschetz property over a polynomial ring with $n$ variables and generated in degree $d$, for any $d\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3$. We consider artinian ideals in the polynomial ring with $n$ variables generated by homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ invariant under an action of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z}$, for any $n\geq 3$ and any $d\geq 2$. We give a complete classification of such ideals in terms of the weak Lefschetz property depending on the action.
