We discuss existence and classification of totally umbilic surfaces in the model geometries of Thurston and the Berger spheres. We classify such surfaces in $H^2 \times R$, $S^2 \times R$ and the Sol group. We prove nonexistence in the Berger spheres and in the remaining model geometries other than the space forms.
The purpose of this paper is to classify totally umbilical slant submanifolds of a Kenmotsu manifold. We prove that a totally umbilical slant submanifold $M$ of a Kenmotsu manifold $\bar M$ is either invariant or anti-invariant or $dim M=1$ or the mean curvature vector $H$ of $M$ lies in the invariant normal subbundle. Moreover, we find with an example that every totally umbilical proper slant submanifold is totally geodesic.
We obtain an exhaustive classification of totally umbilical surfaces in unimodular and non-unimodular simply-connected 3-dimensional Lie groups endowed with arbitrary left-invariant Riemannian metrics. This completes the classification of totally umbilical surfaces in homogeneous Riemannian 3-manifolds.
We present classifications of totally geodesic and totally umbilical Legendrian submanifolds of $(κ,μ)$-spaces with Boeckx invariant $I \leq -1$. In particular, we prove that such submanifolds must be, up to local isometries, among the examples that we explicitly construct.
We discuss two kinds of almost contact metric structures on a one-parameter family of totally umbilical hyperspheres in the nearly Kaehler unit 6-sphere.
For a regular surface in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$, umbilic points are precisely the points where the Gauss and mean curvatures $K$ and $H$ satisfy $H^2=K$; moreover, it is well-known that the only totally umbilic surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ are planes and spheres. But for timelike surfaces in Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{1,2}$, it is possible to have $H^2=K$ at a non-umbilic point; we call such points {\em quasi-umbilic}, and we give a complete classification of totally quasi-umbilic timelike surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{1,2}$.
We study non-degenerate, totally umbilical surfaces of a special class of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, namely Walker three-manifolds. We show that such surfaces are either one of a totally geodesic family described by Calvaruso and Van der Veken or the ambient manifold must be locally conformally flat (here the surface can also be totally geodesic). The proof makes use of a key technique deployed by Manzano and Soaum in their recent classification of totally umbilical surfaces in homogeneous Riemannian three-manifolds.
We show that there is a correspondence between totally umbilic null hypersurfaces in generalized Robertson-Walker spaces and twisted decompositions of the fibre. This allows us to prove that nullcones are the unique totally umbilic null hypersurfaces in the closed Friedmann Cosmological model. We also apply this kind of ideas to static spaces, in particular to Reissner-Nordström and Schwarzschild exterior spacetimes.
The aim of this short article is to investigate the possibility of existence of totally umbilical isometric immersions in R^3 with isothermal parametrization and harmonic metric.
We prove that a Riemannian product of type M x R (where R denotes the Euclidean line) admits totally umbilical hypersurfaces if and only if M has locally the structure of a warped product and we give a complete description of the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in this case. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition under which a Riemannian three-manifold carrying a unit Killing field admits totally geodesic surfaces and we study local and global properties of three-manifolds satisfying this condition.
Following ideas of Choe and Fernandez-do Carmo, we give sufficient conditions for a disk type surface, with piecewise smooth boundary, to be totally umbilical for a given Coddazi pair. As a consequence, we obtain rigidity results for surfaces in space forms and in homogeneous product spaces that generalizes some known results.
The present paper is a continuation of our previous work, where a class of half lightlike submanifolds of almost contact B-metric manifolds was introduced. We study curvature properties of totally and screen totally umbilical such submanifolds as well as of the corresponding semi-Riemannian submanifolds with respect to the associated B-metric.
In this article we classify the totally umbilical surfaces which are immersed into a wide class of Riemannian manifolds having a structure of warped product, more precisely, we show that a totally umbilical surface immersed into the warped product $\mathbb{M}(κ)_f\times I$ (here, $\mathbb{M}(κ)$ denotes the 2-dimensional space form, having constant curvature $κ$, $I$ an interval and $f$ the warping function) is invariant by an one-parameter group of isometries of the ambient space. We also find the first integral of the ordinary differential equation that the profile curve satisfies (we mean, …
Under some dimension restrictions, we prove that totally umbilical hypersurfaces of Spin$^c$ manifolds carrying a parallel, real or imaginary Killing spinor are of constant mean curvature. This extends to the Spin$^c$ case the result of O. Kowalski stating that, every totally umbilical hypersurface of an Einstein manifold of dimension greater or equal to $3$ is of constant mean curvature. As an application, we prove that there are no extrinsic hypersheres in complete Riemannian Spin manifolds of non-constant sectional curvature carrying a parallel, Killing or imaginary Killing spinor.
$H$-umbilicity was introduced as an analogue of total umbilicity for Lagrangian submanifolds since, in some relevant cases, totally umbilical Lagrangian submanifolds are automatically totally geodesic. In this paper, we show that in the homogeneous nearly Kähler $\mathbb{S}^3\times\mathbb{S}^3$, also $H$-umbilical Lagrangian submanifolds are automatically totally geodesic.
In this paper we study curvature properties of semi-symmetric type of totally umbilical radical transversal lightlike hypersurfaces $(M,g)$ and $(M,\widetilde g)$ of a Kähler-Norden manifold $(\overline M,\overline J,\overline g,\overline {\widetilde g})$ of constant totally real sectional curvatures $\overline ν$ and $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ ($g$ and $\widetilde g$ are the induced metrics on $M$ by the Norden metrics $\overline g$ and $\overline {\widetilde g}$,respectively). We obtain a condition for $\overline {\widetilde ν}$ (resp. $\overline ν$) which is equivalent to each of the follow…
Given a Riemannian manifold $M,$ and an open interval $I\subset\mathbb{R},$ we characterize nontrivial totally umbilical hypersurfaces of the product $M\times I$ -- as well as of warped products $I\times_ωM$ -- as those which are local graphs built on isoparametric families of totally umbilical hypersurfaces of $M.$ By means of this characterization, we fully extend to $\mathbb{S}^n\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^n\times\mathbb{R}$ the results by Souam and Toubiana on the classification of totally umbilical hypersurfaces of $\mathbb{S}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ and $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}.$ I…
In this note, we give a geometric characterization of the compact and totally umbilical hypersurfaces that carry a non trivial locally static Killing Initial Data (KID). More precisely, such compact hypersurfaces have constant mean curvature and are isometric to one of the following manifolds: (i) Sn the standard sphere, (ii) a finite quotient of a warped product of a circle with a compact Einstein manifold of positive scalar curvature. In particular, these hypersurfaces have harmonic curvature and strictly positive constant scalar curvature.
We study the geometry of null hypersurfaces in indefinite complex contact manifolds. We prove several classification results for a variety of well-known null hypersurfaces, including the totally umbilic, totally screen umbilic, and the screen conformal ones. Furthermore, a characterization of the ambient space is given in case the underlying null hypersurface is totally contact umbilic, totally contact screen umbilic or contact screen conformal, i.e. we have proved that the ambient complex contact manifold must be a space of constant $GH$-sectional curvature of $-3$.
We construct for every connected surface $S$ of finite negative Euler characteristic and every $H \in [0,1)$, a hyperbolic 3-manifold $N(S,H)$ of finite volume and a proper, two-sided, totally umbilic embedding $f\colon S\to N(S,H)$ with mean curvature $H$. Conversely, we prove that a complete, totally umbilic surface with mean curvature $H \in [0,1)$ embedded in a hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume must be proper and have finite negative Euler characteristic.
We prove that a totally umbilical biharmonic surface in any $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold has constant mean curvature. We use this to show that a totally umbilical surface in Thurston's 3-dimensional geometries is proper biharmonic if and only if it is a part of $S^2(1/\sqrt{2})$ in $S^3$. We also give complete classifications of constant mean curvature proper biharmonic surfaces in 3-dimensional geometries and in 3-dimensional Bianchi-Cartan-Vranceanu spaces, and a complete classifications of proper biharmonic Hopf cylinders in 3-dimensional Bianchi-Cartan-Vranceanu spaces.
It is well known that the umbilic points of minimal surfaces in spaces of constant sectional curvature consist only of isolated points unless the surface is totally umbilic on some connected component, as for example the Hopf form is holomorphic. In this note, we prove that on Willmore surfaces in codimension one the umbilic set is locally a one dimensional real-analytic manifold without boundary or an isolated point.
It was recently shown by R. Souam and E. Toubiana that the (non constantly curved) Berger spheres do not contain totally umbilic surfaces. Nevertheless in this article we show, by perturbative arguments, that all analytic metrics sufficiently close to the round metric $g_{0}$ on $\mathbb{S}^{3}$ possess \textsl{generalized} totally umbilic 2-spheres, namely critical points of the conformal Willmore functional $\int_Σ|A^\circ|^{2}\,dμ_γ$. The same is true in the smooth setting provided a suitable non-degeneracy condition on the traceless Ricci tensor holds. The proof involves a gluing process o…
In this paper we consider three-manifolds with weakly umbilic boundary (the Second Fundamental form of the boundary is a constant multiple of the metric). We show that if the initial manifold has positive Ricci curvature and the boundary is convex (nonnegative Second Fundamental form), its metric can be deformed via the Ricci flow to a metric of constant curvature and totally geodesic boundary.
In this work, we study the geometric properties of spacelike foliations by hypersurfaces on a Lorentz manifold. We investigate conditions for the leaves being stable, totally geodesic or totally umbilical. We consider that $\overline{M}^{n+1}$ is equipped with a timelike closed conformal vector field $ξ$. If the foliation has constant mean curvature, we show that the leaves are stable. When the leaves are compact spacelike hypersurfaces we show that, under certain conditions, its are totally umbilic hypersurfaces. In the case of foliations by complete noncompact hypersurfaces, we using a Maxim…
A spacelike surface in four-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski spacetime through the lightcone has a meaningful lightlike normal vector field $η$. Several sufficient assumptions on such a surface with non-degenerate $η$-second fundamental form are established to prove that it must be a totally umbilical round sphere. With this aim, a new formula which relates the Gauss curvatures of the induced metric and of the $η$-second fundamental form is developed. Then, totally umbilical round spheres are characterized as the only compact spacelike surfaces through the lightcone such that its $η$-second funda…
We derive total mean curvature integration formulae of a three co-dimensional foliation $\mathcal{F}^{n}$ on a screen integrable half-lightlike submanifold, $M^{n+1}$ in a semi-Riemannian manifold $\overline{M}^{n+3}$. We give generalized differential equations relating to mean curvatures of a totally umbilical half-lightlike submanifold admitting a totally umbilical screen distribution, and show that they are generalizations of those given by [4].
In \cite{Luo}, the present author proved that if $L$ is a contact stationary Legendrian surface in $\mathbb{S}^5$ with the canonical Sasakian structure and the square length of its second fundamental form belongs to $[0,2]$. Then we have that $L$ is either totally umbilical or is a flat minimal Legendrian torus. In this addendum we further prove that if $L$ is a totally umbilical contact stationary Legendrian surface in $\mathbb{S}^5$ , then $L$ is totally geodesic.
In this paper I have studied about CR(Cauchy-Riemann)-submanifolds of Lorentzian Concircular Structure manifold ((LCS)n-manifold), Lorentzian Para-Sasakian(LP)-cosymplectic manifold, S-manifold and Generalized Kenmotsu (GKM) manifold. I have discussed some results regarding distribution, structure vector field, totally geodesic submanifold, leaf etc.. I have obtained results on totally umbilical contact CR-submanifold where the anti-invariant distribution has some properties. Next, I have studied some results about D-totally geodesic CR-submanifold (D is the distribution), a contact CR-submani…
It is known that the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in the (n+1)-dimensional spheres are characterized as the only hypersurfaces with weak stability index 0. That is, a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature, cmc, in S^{n+1}, different from an Euclidean sphere, must have stability index greater than or equal to 1. In this paper we prove that the weak stability index of any non-totally umbilical compact hypersurface M\subset S^{n+1} with cmc cannot take the values 1,2,3... n.
We give a full classification of higher order parallel surfaces in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces with four-dimensional isometry group, i.e. in the so-called Bianchi-Cartan-Vranceanu family. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture formulated in 2002. As a partial result, we prove that totally umbilical surfaces only exist if the space is a Riemannian product of a surface of constant Gaussian curvature and the real line, and we give a local parametrization of all totally umbilical surfaces.
We obtain a bound for the area of a capillary $H-$surface in a three-manifold with umbilic boundary and controlled sectional curvature. We then analyze the geometry when this area bound is realized, and obtain rigidity theorems. As a side product, we obtain existence of totally geodesic embedded surfaces in hyperbolic three-manifolds under the assumption of the existence of a $H-$surface realizing the area bound, in particular, under the existence of a totally umbilic $H-$surface.
In this paper we consider some properties of the three-dimensional homogeneous SO(2)-isotropic Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we determine the geodesics, the totally geodesic surfaces, the totally umbilical surfaces and the geodesics of the rotational surfaces.
In the present paper, we investigate geometric properties of Clairaut anti-invariant submersions whose total space is a nearly Kaehler manifold. We obtain condition for Clairaut anti-invariant submersion to be a totally geodesic map and also study Clairaut anti-invariant submersions with totally umbilical fibers. In the last, we introduce illustrative example.
In the present paper, we show that the geometry of a screen integrable null hypersurface can be generated from an isometric immersion of a leaf of its screen distribution into the ambient space. We prove, under certain geometric conditions, that such immersions are contained in semi-Euclidean spheres or hyperbolic spaces, and the underlying null hypersurfaces are necessarily umbilic and screen totally umbilic. Where necessary, examples have been given to illustrate the main ideas.
The global qualitative behaviour of fields of principal directions for the graph of a real valued polynomial function $f$ on the plane are studied. We provide a Poincaré-Hopf type formula where the sum over all indices of the principal directions at its umbilic points only depends upon the number of real linear factors of the homogeneous part of highest degree of $f$. Moreover, we study the projective extension of these fields and prove, under generic conditions, that every umbilic point at infinity of these extensions is isolated, has index equal to 1/2 and its topological type is a Lemon.
We study generic Riemannian submersions from nearly Kaehler manifolds onto Riemannian manifolds. We investigate conditions for the integrability of various distributions arising for generic Riemannian submersions and also obtain conditions for leaves to be totally geodesic foliations. We obtain conditions for a generic Riemannian submersion to be a totally geodesic map and also study generic Riemannian submersions with totally umbilical fibers. Finally, we derive conditions for generic Riemannian submersions to be harmonic map.
Let $M$ be an $n(\geq3)$-dimensional oriented compact submanifold with parallel mean curvature in the simply connected space form $F^{n+p}(c)$ with $c+H^2>0$, where $H$ is the mean curvature of $M$. We prove that if the Ricci curvature of $M$ satisfies $Ric_{M}\geq(n-2)(c+H^2),$ then $M$ is either a totally umbilic sphere, the Clifford hypersurface $S^{m}\big(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2(c+H^2)}}\big)\times S^{m}\big(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2(c+H^2)}}\big)$ in $S^{n+1}(\frac{1}{\sqrt{c+H^2}})$ with $n=2m$, or $\mathbb{C}P^{2}(4/3(c+H^2))$ in $S^7(\frac{1}{\sqrt{c+H^2}})$. In particular, if $Ric_{M}>(n-2)(c+H^2),$ …
In this paper, we define and study CR-lightlike submanifolds of a golden semi-Riemannian manifold. We investigate some properties of geodesic CR-submanifolds of a golden semi-Riemannian manifold. Moreover, we obtain many interesting results for totally geodesic and totally umbilical CR-submanifolds on a golden Riemannian manifold. A non-trivial example of CR-lightlike submanifold of a golden semi-Riemannian manifold is also constructed.
For a compact spacelike constant mean curvature surface with nonempty boundary in the three-dimensional Lorentz-Minkowski space, we introduce a rotation index of the lines of curvature at the boundary umbilic point, which was developed by Choe \cite{Choe}. Using the concept of the rotation index at the interior and boundary umbilic points and applying the Poincaré-Hopf index formula, we prove that a compact immersed spacelike disk type capillary surface with less than $4$ vertices in a domain of $\Bbb L^3$ bounded by (spacelike or timelike) totally umbilic surfaces is part of a (spacelike) pla…
In this paper we initiate the study of submanifolds of almost hypercomplex manifolds with Hermitian and Norden metrics. Object of investigations are holomorphic submanifolds of the hypercomplex manifolds which are locally conformally equivalent to the hyper-Kähler manifolds of the considered type. Necessary and sufficient conditions the investigated holomorphic submanifolds to be totally umbilical or totally geodesic are obtained. Examples of the examined submanifolds are constructed.
We give a complete classification of umbilical submanifolds of arbitrary dimension and codimension of $\Sf^n\times \R$, extending the classification of umbilical surfaces in $\Sf^2\times \R$ by Rabah-Souam and Toubiana as well as the local description of umbilical hypersurfaces in $\Sf^n\times \R$ by Van der Veken and Vrancken. We prove that, besides small spheres in a slice, up to isometries of the ambient space they come in a two-parameter family of rotational submanifolds whose substantial codimension is either one or two and whose profile is a curve in a totally geodesic $\Sf^1\times \R$ o…
We consider a unit normal vector field of (local) hyperfoliation on a given Riemannian manifold as a submanifold in the unit tangent bundle with Sasaki metric. We give an explicit expression of the second fundamental form for this submanifold and a rather simple condition its totally geodesic property in the case of a totally umbilic hyperfoliation. A corresponding example shows the non-triviality of this condition. In the 2-dimensional case, we give a complete description of Riemannian manifolds admitting a geodesic unit vector field with totally geodesic property.
We show that a simply connected Riemannian homogeneous space M which admits a totally geodesic hypersurface F is isometric to either (a) the Riemannian product of a space of constant curvature and a homogeneous space, or (b) the warped product of the Euclidean space and a homogeneous space, or (c) the twisted product of the line and a homogeneous space (with the warping/twisting function given explicitly). In the first case, F is also a Riemannian product; in the last two cases, it is a leaf of a totally geodesic homogeneous fibration. Case (c) can alternatively be characterised by the fact th…
We introduce a new class of lightlike submanifolds, namely, Screen Transversal Cauchy Riemann (STCR)-lightlike submanifolds, of indefinite Kaehler manifolds. We show that this new class is an umbrella of screen transversal lightlike, screen transversal totally real lightlike and CR-lightlike submanifolds. We give a few examples of a STCR lightlike submanifold, investigate the integrability of various distributions, obtain a characterization of such lightlike submanifolds in a complex space form and find new conditions for the induced connection to be a metric connection. Moreover, we investiga…
