We give a full classification of higher order parallel surfaces in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces with four-dimensional isometry group, i.e. in the so-called Bianchi-Cartan-Vranceanu family. This gives a positive answer to a conjecture formulated in 2002. As a partial result, we prove that totally umbilical surfaces only exist if the space is a Riemannian product of a surface of constant Gaussian curvature and the real line, and we give a local parametrization of all totally umbilical surfaces.
Let $M$ be a differentiable manifold and $K$ a Lie group. A locally homogeneous triple with structure group $K$ on $M$ is a triple $(g, P\stackrel{p}{\to} M,A)$, where $p:P\to M$ is a principal $K$-bundle on $M$, $g$ is Riemannian metric on $M$, and $A$ is connection on $P$ such that the following locally homogeneity condition is satisfied: for every two points $x$, $x'\in M$ there exists an isometry $φ:U\to U'$ between open neighborhoods $U\ni x$, $U'\ni x'$ with $φ(x)=x'$, and a $φ$-covering bundle isomorphism $Φ:P_U\to P_{U'}$ such that $Φ^*(A_{U'})=A_U$. If $(g,P\stackrel{p}{\to} M,A)$ is …
We survey different classification results for surfaces with parallel mean curvature immersed into some Riemannian homogeneous four-manifolds, including real and complex space forms, and product spaces. We provide a common framework for this problem, with special attention to the existence of holomorphic quadratic differentials on such surfaces. The case of spheres with parallel mean curvature is also explained in detail, as well as the state-of-the-art advances in the general problem.
A nearly parallel $G_{2}$-manifold $Y$ is a Riemannian 7-manifold whose cone $C(Y) = \mathbb{R}_{>0} \times Y$ has the holonomy group contained in ${\rm Spin(7)}$. In other words, it is a spin 7-manifold with a real Killing spinor. We have a special class of calibrated submanifolds called Cayley submanifolds in $C(Y)$. An associative submanifold in $Y$ is a minimal 3-submanifold whose cone is Cayley. We study its deformations, namely, Cayley cone deformations, explicitly when it is homogeneous in the 7-sphere $S^{7}$.
We prove the existence of a one-parameter family of nearly parallel $G_2$-structures on the manifold $S^3\times \mathbb R^4$, which are mutually non isomorphic and invariant under the cohomogeneity one action of the group $SU(2)^3$. This family connects the two locally homogeneous nearly parallel $G_2$-structures which are induced by the homogeneous ones on the sphere $S^7$.
The paper is devoted to metric connections with parallel skew-symmetric torsion in Lorentzian signature. This is motivated by recent progress in the Riemannian signature and by possible applications to supergravity theories. We provide a complete information about holonomy algebras, torsion and curvature of the considered connections up to the corresponding objects from the Riemannian signature. Various examples are constructed. It is shown how to construct all simply connected Lorentzian naturally reductive homogeneous spaces of arbitrary dimension from Riemannian naturally reductive homogene…
We investigate the nondegeneracy of higher order Levi forms on weakly nondegenerate homogeneous $CR$ manifolds. Improving previous results, we prove that general orbits of real forms in complex flag manifolds have order less or equal $3$ and the compact ones less or equal~$2$. Finally we construct by Lee extensions weakly nondegenerate $CR$ vector bundles with arbitrary orders of nondegeneracy.
We classify all seven-dimensional spaces which admit a homogeneous cosymplectic G2-structure. The motivation for this classification is that each of these spaces is a possible principal orbit of a parallel Spin(7)-manifold of cohomogeneity one.
We consider parallel submanifolds $M$ of a Riemannian symmetric space $N$ and study the question whether $M$ is extrinsically homogeneous in $N$\,, i.e.\ whether there exists a subgroup of the isometry group of $N$ which acts transitively on $M$\,. First, given a "2-jet" $(W,b)$ at some point $p\in N$ (i.e. $W\subset T_pN$ is a linear space and $b:W\times W\to W^\bot$ is a symmetric bilinear form)\,, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a parallel submanifold with extrinsically homogeneous tangent holonomy bundle which passes through $p$ and whose 2-jet at $p$ is …
We show that for any weakly reflective submanifold of a compact isotropy irreducible Riemannian homogeneous space its inverse image under the parallel transport map is an infinite dimensional weakly reflective PF submanifold of a Hilbert space. This is an extension of the author's previous result in the case of compact irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces. We also give a characterization of so obtained weakly reflective PF submanifolds.
A para-Kähler manifold can be defined as a pseudo-Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with a parallel skew-symmetric para-complex structures $K$, i.e. a parallel field of skew-symmetric endomorphisms with $ K^2 = \mathrm{Id} $ or, equivalently, as a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$ with a bi-Lagrangian structure $L^\pm$, i.e. two complementary integrable Lagrangian distributions. A homogeneous manifold $M = G/H$ of a semisimple Lie group $G$ admits an invariant para-Kähler structure $(g,K)$ if and only if it is a covering of the adjoint orbit $\mathrm{Ad}_Gh$ of a semisimple element $h.$ We give a descript…
We present a new method for classifying naturally reductive homogeneous spaces -- i.\,e.~homogeneous Riemannian manifolds admitting a metric connection with skew torsion that has parallel torsion \emph{and} curvature. This method is based on a deeper understanding of the holonomy algebra of connections with parallel skew torsion on Riemannian manifolds and the interplay of such a connection with the geometric structure on the given Riemannian manifold. It allows to reproduce by easier arguments the known classifications in dimensions $3,4$, and $5$, and yields as a new result the classificatio…
We consider isometric immersions into space forms having the second fundamental form parallel at order k. We show that this class of immersions consists of local products, in a suitably defined sense, of parallel immersions and normally flat immersions of flat spaces.
Starting from a 6-dimensional nilpotent Lie group N endowed with an invariant SU(3) structure, we construct a homogeneous conformally parallel G_2-metric on an associated solvmanifold. We classify all half-flat SU(3) structures that endow the rank-one solvable extension of N with a conformally parallel G_2 structure. By suitably deforming the SU(3) structures obtained, we are able to describe the corresponding non-homogeneous Ricci-flat metrics with holonomy contained in G_2. In the process we also find a new metric with exceptional holonomy.
This paper proves that there are no compact forms for a large class of homogeneous spaces admitting actions by higher-rank semisimple Lie groups. It builds on Zimmer's approach for studying such spaces using cocycle superrigidity. The proof involves cocycle superrigidity, measure rigidity for unipotent flows, techniques from partially hyperbolic dynamics, and the geometry and pseudo-Riemannian structure of the homogeneous space.
We study non-degenerate, totally umbilical surfaces of a special class of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds, namely Walker three-manifolds. We show that such surfaces are either one of a totally geodesic family described by Calvaruso and Van der Veken or the ambient manifold must be locally conformally flat (here the surface can also be totally geodesic). The proof makes use of a key technique deployed by Manzano and Soaum in their recent classification of totally umbilical surfaces in homogeneous Riemannian three-manifolds.
In this paper, we use two conformal non-homogeneous coordinate systems, modeled on the de Sitter space ${\mathbb S}^{m+1}_1$, to cover the conformal space ${\mathbb Q}^{m+1}_1$, so that the conformal geometry of regular space-like hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{Q}^{m+1}_1$ is treated as that of hypersurfaces in ${\mathbb S}^{m+1}_1$. As a result, we give a complete classification of the regular space-like hypersurfaces (represented in the de Sitter space ${\mathbb S}^{m+1}_1$) with parallel Blaschke tensors.
We study symmetric affine surfaces which have non-vanishing torsion tensor. We give a complete classification of the local geometries possible if the torsion is assumed parallel. This generalizes a previous result of Opozda in the torsion free setting; these geometries are all locally homogeneous. If the torsion is not parallel, we assume the underlying surface is locally homogeneous and provide a complete classification in this setting as well.
We give an upper bound for the rank $r$ of homogeneous (even) Clifford structures on compact manifolds of non-vanishing Euler characteristic. More precisely, we show that if $r=2^a\cdot b$ with $b$ odd, then $r\le 9$ for $a=0$, $r\le 10$ for $a=1$, $r\le 12$ for $a=2$ and $r\le 16$ for $a\ge 3$. Moreover, we describe the four limiting cases and show that there is exactly one solution in each case.
We construct a parallel transport on higher loop spaces of a manifold in term of a higher dimensional generalization of iterated path integrals. Under mild assumptions, we define a de Rham complex on higher loop spaces and we recover a known result of Hain of a de Rham structure on higher homotopy groups of a manifold. The key ingredient is a new definition of iterated integrals on membranes, which also have applications in number theory, algebraic geometry and mathematical physics.

We analyse second order (in Riemann curvature) geometric flows (un-normalised) on locally homogeneous three manifolds and look for specific features through the solutions (analytic whereever possible, otherwise numerical) of the evolution equations. Several novelties appear in the context of scale factor evolution, fixed curves, phase portraits, approaches to singular metrics, isotropisation and curvature scalar evolution. The distinguishing features linked to the presence of the second order term in the flow equation are pointed out. Throughout the article, we compare the results obtained, wi…
In this technical paper, we present a new formulation of higher parallel transport in strict higher gauge theory required for the rigorous construction of Wilson lines and surfaces. Our approach is based on an original notion of Lie crossed module cocycle and cocycle 1- and 2-gauge transformation with a non standard double category theoretic interpretation. We show its equivalence to earlier formulations.
Let s be at least 2. We construct Ricci flat pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of signature (2s,s) which are not locally homogeneous but whose curvature tensors never the less exhibit a number of important symmetry properties. They are curvature homogeneous; their curvature tensor is modeled on that of a local symmetric space. They are spacelike Jordan Osserman with a Jacobi operator which is nilpotent of order 3; they are not timelike Jordan Osserman. They are k-spacelike higher order Jordan Osserman for $2\le k\le s$; they are k-timelike higher order Jordan Osserman for $s+2\le k\le 2s$, and they …
The Lagrangian formalism on a arbitrary non-fibrating manifold is considered. The kinematical description of this generic situation is based on the concept of (higher-order) Grassmann manifolds which is the factorization of the regular velocity manifold to the action of the differential group. Here we introduce in this context the basic concepts of the Lagrangian formalism as Lagrange, Euler-Lagrange and Helmholtz-Sonin forms. These objects come in pairs, namely we have homogeneous objects (defined on the regular velocity manifold) and non-homogeneous objects (defined on the Grassmann manifold…
Many physical theories, including notably string theory, require non-abelian higher gauge fields defining higher holonomy. Previous approaches to such higher connections on categorified principal bundles require these to be fake flat. This condition, however, renders them locally gauge equivalent to connections on abelian gerbes. For particular higher gauge groups, for example 2-group models of the string group, this limitation can be overcome by generalizing the notion of higher connection. Starting from this observation, we define a corresponding generalized higher holonomy functor which is …
This paper is motivated by recent developments of higher gauge theory. Different from its style of using higher category theory, we try to describe the concept of higher parallel transport within setting of classical principal bundle theory. From this perspective, we obtain a global geometric proof on a generalized 3-dimensional non-abelian Stokes' theorem related to parallel transport on surfaces. It can be naturally extended to four dimension when the underlying crossed module is replaced by crossed 2-module. This 4-dimensional Stokes' theorem yields a global formula for volume holonomy, and…
