We exhibit the analogy between prime geodesics on hyperbolic Riemann surfaces and ordinary primes. We present new asymptotic counting results concerning pairs of prime geodesics whose homology difference is fixed.
We develop a new method for studying sums of Kloosterman sums related to the spectral exponential sum. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of the estimate of Soundararajan and Young for the error term in the prime geodesic theorem.
We investigate how often geodesics have homology in a fixed set of the homology lattice of a compact Riemann surface. We prove that closed geodesics are equidistributed on any sets with asymptotic density with respect to a specific norm. We explain the analogues for free groups, conjugacy classes and discrete logarithms, in particular, we investigate the density of conjugacy classes with relatively prime discrete logarithms.
Let $Γ=PSL(2,Z[i])$ be the Picard group and $H^3$ be the three-dimensional hyperbolic space. We study the Prime Geodesic Theorem for the quotient $Γ\setminus H^3$, called the Picard manifold, obtaining an error term of size $O(X^{3/2+θ/2+ε})$, where $θ$ denotes a subconvexity exponent for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions defined over Gaussian integers.
We define a norm on homology of punctured tori equipped with a complete hyperbolic metric of finite volume and use it to find asymptotics on the growth of the number of simple geodesics of bounded length.
Prime geodesic theorems for weighted infinite graphs and weighted building quotients are given. The growth rates are expressed in terms of the spectral data of suitable translation operators inspired by a paper of Bass.
We show a Prime Geodesic Theorem for the group SL3(Z), counting those geodesics whose lifts lie in the split Cartan subgroup. This is the first arithmetic Prime Geodesic Theorem of higher rank for a non-cocompact group.
We study the distribution of closed geodesics for the modular surface. We improve the error term in the prime geodesic theorem, and obtain results on prime geodesics in very short intervals conditionally on the generalized Riemann Hypothesis for Dirichlet L-functions. We emphasize a connection between the closed geodesics and certain Dirichlet L-functions.
We reduce the exponent in the error term of the prime geodesic theorem for compact Riemann surfaces from $\frac{3}{4}$ to $\frac{7}{10}$ outside a set of finite logarithmic measure.
We prove a prime geodesic theorem for compact quotients of affine buildings and apply it to get class number asymptotics for global fields of positive characteristic.
Under the generalized Lindelöf hypothesis, the exponent in the error term of the prime geodesic theorem for the modular surface is reduced to $\frac{5}{8}+\varepsilon $ outside a set of finite logarithmic measure.
We generalize a formula on the counting of prime geodesics, due to Kuznetsov-Bykovskii, used in the work of Soundararajan-Young on the prime geodesic theorem. The method works over any number field and for any congruence subgroup. We give explicit computation in the cases of principal and Hecke subgroups.
Through the Selberg zeta approach, we reduce the exponent in the error term of the prime geodesic theorem for cocompact Kleinian groups or Bianchi groups from Sarnak's $\frac{5}{3}$ to $\frac{3}{2}$. At the cost of excluding a set of finite logarithmic measure, the bound is further improved to $\frac{13}{9}$.
The Zagier $L$-series encode data of real quadratic fields. We study the average size of these $L$-series, and prove asymptotic expansions and omega results for the expansion. We then show how the error term in the asymptotic expansion can be used to obtain error terms in the prime geodesic theorem.
Soundararajan and Young (2013) proposed a new approach to improve the error term of the prime geodesic theorem for the modular group and actually obtained the exponent 25/36 of the error term. In the present paper, we sharpen it to 9/13.
We give a new proof of the best presently known error term in the prime geodesic theorem for compact Riemann surfaces, without the assumption of excluding a set of finite logarithmic measure. Stronger implications of the Gallagher-Koyama approach are derived yielding to a further reduction of the error term outside a set of finite logarithmic measure.
We prove upper bounds for the mean square of the remainder in the prime geodesic theorem, for every cofinite Fuchsian group, which improve on average on the best known pointwise bounds. The proof relies on the Selberg trace formula. For the modular group we prove a refined upper bound by using the Kuznetsov trace formula.
The remainder $E_Γ(X)$ in the Prime Geodesic Theorem for the Picard group $Γ= \mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}[i])$ is known to be bounded by $O(X^{3/2+ε})$ under the assumption of the Lindelöf hypothesis for quadratic Dirichlet $L$-functions over Gaussian integers. By studying the second moment of $E_Γ(X)$, we show that on average the same bound holds unconditionally.

For $Γ$ a cofinite Kleinian group acting on $\mathbb{H}^3$, we study the Prime Geodesic Theorem on $M=Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}^3$, which asks about the asymptotic behaviour of lengths of primitive closed geodesics (prime geodesics) on $M$. Let $E_Γ(X)$ be the error in the counting of prime geodesics with length at most $\log X$. For the Picard manifold, $Γ=\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z}[i])$, we improve the classical bound of Sarnak, $E_Γ(X)=O(X^{5/3+ε})$, to $E_Γ(X)=O(X^{13/8+ε})$. In the process we obtain a mean subconvexity estimate for the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function attached to Maass-Hecke cusp …
We prove prime geodesic theorems counting primitive closed geodesics on a compact hyperbolic 3-manifold with length and holonomy in prescribed intervals, which are allowed to shrink. Our results imply effective equidistribution of holonomy and have both the rate of shrinking and the strength of the error term fully symmetric in length and holonomy.
The discrete tori are graph analogues of the real tori, which are defined by the Cayley graphs of a finite product of finite cyclic groups. In this paper, using the theory of the heat kernel on the discrete tori established by Chinta, Jorgenson and Karlsson, we derive an explicit prime geodesic theorem for the discrete tori, which is not an asymptotic formula. To describe the formula, we need generalizations of the classical Jacobi polynomials, which are defined by the Lauricella multivariable hypergeometric function of type C.
The bounded gaps property of the prime numbers, as proven by Yitang Zhang, is considered for sequences of lengths of closed geodesics, which by the theory of Selberg zeta functions are the geometric analogue of the prime numbers. It turns out that the property holds for congruence subgroups and is false for a dense set in Teichmüller space.
We describe a new approach to the study of the set of all simple geodesics on a hyperbolic punctured torus. We introduce a valuation on the first integral homology group of the torus. This valuation associates to each homology class the length of the unique simple geodesic in it. We show that this valuation extends to a norm on the homology with real coefficients. We analyze the structure of this norm, and its variation over the moduli space of punctured tori. These results are applied to obtain sharp asymptotic estimates on the number of simple geodesics of bounded length..
In this paper we introduce the concept of a quota complex and study how the topology of these quota complexes changes as the quota is changed. This problem is a simple "linear" version of the general question in Morse Theory of how the topology of a space varies with a parameter. We give examples of natural and basic quota complexes where this problem codifies questions about the distribution of primes, squares and divisors in number theory and as an example provide natural topological formulations of the prime number theorem, the twin prime conjecture, Goldbach's conjecture, Lehmer's conjectu…
In his recent research, the author improved the error term in the prime geodesic theorem for compact, even-dimensional, rank one locally symmetric spaces. It turned out that the obtained estimate $O(x^{2ρ-\fracρ{n}}(\log x)^{-1})$ coincides with the best known results for compact Riemann surfaces, three manifolds, and manifolds with cusps, where $n$ stands for the dimension of the space, and $ρ$ is the half-sum of positive roots. The above bound was then reduced to $O(x^{2ρ-ρ\frac{2\cdot(2n)+1}{2n\cdot(2n)+1}}(\log x)^{\frac{n-1}{2n\cdot(2n)+1}-1}(\log\log x)^{\frac{n-1}{2n\cdot(2n)+1}+\vareps…
For a link $L$ in the 3-sphere and for a prime $p$, we express the $p$-primary information on the first homology group of $p^{m}$-fold branched covers of $L$ in terms of its $p$-adic Milnor higher linking invariants, using the completed Alexander module of the pro-$p$ completion of the link group of $L$.

Froyshov invariants are numerical invariants of rational homology three-spheres derived from gradings in monopole Floer homology. In the past few years, they have been employed to solve a wide range of problems in three and four-dimensional topology. In this paper, we look at connections with hyperbolic geometry for the class of minimal $L$-spaces. In particular, we study relations between Froyshov invariants and closed geodesics using ideas from analytic number theory. We discuss two main applications of our approach. First, we derive effective upper bounds for the Froyshov invariants of mini…
In 1992, Reid asked whether hyperbolic 3-manifolds with the same geodesic length spectra are necessarily commensurable. While this is known to be true for arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds, the non-arithmetic case is still open. Building towards a negative answer to this question, Futer and Millichap recently constructed infinitely many pairs of non-commensurable, non-arithmetic hyperbolic 3-manifolds which have the same volume and whose length spectra begin with the same first $m$ geodesic lengths. In the present paper, we show that this phenomenon is surprisingly common in the arithmetic set…
For an odd prime $p$ satisfying Vandiver's conjecture, we give explicit formulae for the action of the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb{Q}(ζ_p)}$ on the homology of the degree $p$ Fermat curve, building on work of Anderson. Further, we study the invariants and the first Galois cohomology group which are associated with obstructions to rational points on the Fermat curve.
